Visual field defects (VFDs) and factors discriminating these groups were analyzed.Methods: These groups were sorted by optical coherence tomography. VFDs were assessed using the Humphrey® Field Analyzer 3, SITA standard. Ovality index (OI) was the ratio between the shortest and longest diameters of the disc. The proportions of PICCs, lamina cribrosa defects (LCDs) and clusters in each Garway-Heath’s sector (A—F) were analyzed. All variables were compared between PICCs and combinations. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed ultimately.Results: Of the 93 eyes, we obtained, 20 PICCs and 73 combinations. The prevalence of VFDs and LCDs in PICCs were 65% (13/20) and 30% (6/20), respectively. PICCs 85% (17/20) and LCDs 12% (11/93) predominated in sector B (inferotemporal) and clusters 9.7% (9/93) in the corresponding sector. The proportion of VFDs was significantly higher in PICCs than combinations (p < 0.001). In sector B, the proportion of LCDs was significantly higher in PICCs than combinations (p = 0.011). The mean OI was significantly lower (p < 0.001) in PICCs than combinations. Multivariate logistic regression analysis concluded that mean OI (p < 0.001) was the only statistically significant factor discriminating PICCs and combinations.Conclusion: Mean OI discriminating PICCs from combinations is further evidence of a gradation of structural changes between them. It could be related to the higher proportion of VFDs in PICCs. The predominant distribution of PICCs infero-temporally supports PICC as a cause of uncertainty in glaucoma diagnosis in high myopia. Furthermore, the highest proportion of PICCs and LCDs in this sector highlights its vulnerability to damage in myopic eyes and deserves further investigation as it is also primarily involved in glaucoma.Keywords: peripapillary intrachoroidal cavitation, visual field defects, peripapillary staphyloma, gamma peripapillary atrophy, ovality index, lamina cribrosa defects, glaucoma, myopic complications

Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) is an endemic and chronic osteochondropathy. This disease principally occurs in the Tibet Autonomous Region and in several provinces of the People's Republic of China. The etiology of the disease remains obscure although environmental factors are assumed to be involved. Diet, in particular, differentiates the rural community, affected by KBD, from the other communities (nomads and city-dwellers), who remain unaffected. In anticipation of a nutrition survey, this study aimed to measure the mineral content (Ca, P, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Ni, Se, Al, Sr, Mo, Cd, As, Pb, Hg, Cr, and Co) of eight Tibetan staple foods and to compare the results against two food composition tables (FCTs). Foods were sampled in twenty households selected from both an endemic and a non-endemic area of rural Tibet. Ten minerals involved in bone metabolism were measured using atomic and molecular spectrometric methods. Results revealed that a very limited number of food/constituent pairs showed a variation in mineral composition during a single year of testing for a given region. In addition, results showed significant differences in mineral content between the endemic and the non-endemic area, especially for wheat flour. Following our analysis of the mineral content of the Tibetan food samples, results were statistically compared with similar foods listed in two food composition tables: the USDA National Nutrient Database (USDA Food Search for Windows, Version 1.0, database version SR23), and the China Food Composition Table (book 1, 2nd edition). More than 50 to 60% of p-values < 0.05 were highlighted, suggesting the inappropriateness of using FCTs as a reference for nutrition surveys in rural Tibet, and emphasizing the need for analysis of traditional foods. Differences were found to be more or less marked depending on the element considered, and calcium content seemed to show the greatest difference. Although it is obviously too early for definite conclusions to be reached (insufficient number of samples by food and insufficient number of foods analyzed), it seems that the present pilot-study indicates significant discrepancies between measured and tabulated values of the mineral content of certain foods. A more complete survey would therefore seem mandatory.

Background: Patients with rosacea or demodicosis have high facial skin Demodex densities (Dds). Topical ivermectin, benzyl benzoate (BB) and crotamiton have been shown to decrease Dds in vivo, but there are few data on the clinical and acaricidal effects of BB among patients with rosacea. Objective: To evaluate the impact of topical BB (+crotamiton) treatment on Dds and clinical symptoms of rosacea and demodicosis, and compare three BB treatment regimens. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, 394 patients (117 with rosacea, 277 with demodicosis) were included. Three BB (+crotamiton) treatment regimens were compared: 12% once daily, 12% twice daily and 20% once daily. Dds were measured using two consecutive standardized skin surface biopsies [superficial (SSSB1) and deep (SSSB2)] before treatment and at the first follow‐up. Symptoms were evaluated using investigator global assessment. Treatment was considered effective if the Dd had normalized (SSSB1 ≤ 5 D/cm2AND SSSB2 ≤ 10 D/cm²) or symptoms had cleared and curative if the Dd had normalized and symptoms had cleared. Results: At an average of 2.7 months after treatment start, the total Dd (SSSB1 + 2) had decreased by 72.4 ± 2.6% from the initial value across the whole cohort. Dds had normalized in 139 patients (35%), and symptoms had cleared in 122 (31%). Treatment was effective in 183 (46%) patients and curative in 78 (20%). Compliance was good: 77% of patients correctly followed treatment instructions. Results were similar in patients with rosacea and those with demodicosis. The 12% once‐daily regimen was less effective than the other doses and had poorer compliance than the 12% twice‐daily regimen. Conclusion: Topical treatment with BB (+crotamiton) may be an effective treatment for rosacea and demodicosis, indirectly supporting a key role of the mite in the pathophysiology of rosacea.
