Abstract

Swift, high resolution CMOS pixel sensors are being developed for the ILC vertex detector, aiming to allow approaching the interaction point very closely. A major issue is the time resolution of the sensors needed to deal with the high occupancy generated by the beam related background. A 128x576 pixel sensor providing digitised outputs at a read-out time of 92.5 us, was fabricated in 2008 within the EU project EUDET, and tested with charged particles at the CERN-SPS. Its prominent performances in terms of noise, detection efficiency versus fake hit rate, spatial resolution and radiation tolerance are overviewed. Abstract

The impact of the incoherent electron-positron pairs from beamstrahlung on the occupancy of the vertex detector (VXD) for the International Large Detector concept (ILD) has been studied, based on the standard ILD simulation tools. The occupancy was evaluated for two substantially different sensor technology in order to estimate the importance of the latter. Abstract

This work was done in the framework of the COMPASS experiment. Silicon detectors are used in COMPASS for the reconstruction of beam particle upstream of the target. The harsh radiation to which they are exposed degradates the detector's performance. A method to use reliably silicon detectors in high radiation environment is to operate them a cryogenic temperatures. At low temperatures the Charge Collection Efficiency (CCE) of heavily damaged silicon detectors has a dramatic increase, with a maximum at T=130 K ( Lazarus effect). In the first part of this work the design and realisation of a silicon microstrip detector system operated at cryogenic temperature have been discussed. During 2003 the detector system was installed and tested at 130 K in COMPASS, but only with some preliminary part of the equipment. The second part of this work has been devoted to the study of Ξ0* resonances and the search for a pentaquark candidate Ξ--, having a similar decay chain, with COMPASS. While a clean Ξ0* signal has been observed, there is no evidence of a Ξ--. The total cross section for Ξ0* and the upper limit for the Ξ-- have been estimated. Diese Arbeit ist im Rahmen des COMPASS Experimentes entstanden. Der erste Teil ist der Entwicklung und dem Aufbau eines Siliziumstreifendetektors gewidmet, dessen Aufgabe der Spurnachweis der einlaufenden Teilchen vor dem Target ist. Die dabei auftretende harte Strahlung hat eine Schädigung des Festkörperstruktur des Detectors zur Folge, und erfordert einen Betrieb des Detektors bei tiefen Temperaturen. Der sogenannte Lazarus Effekt verhindert den zunehmenden Verlust der Ladungssammlungseffizienz (CCE), mit einem Optimum bei T=130 K. Während der Datennahme im Jahre 2003 wurde das Detektorsystem installiert und bei 130 K getestet. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit befasst sich mit der Analyse der Ξ0*-Resonanz im COMPASS und der Suche nach dem Pentaquarkkandidaten Ξ-- mit ähnlicher Zerfallssignatur. Abstract

The International Large Detector (ILD) is a concept for a detector at the International Linear Collider, ILC. The ILC will collide electrons and positrons at energies of initially 500 GeV, upgradeable to 1 TeV. The ILC has an ambitious physics program, which will extend and complement that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A hallmark of physics at the ILC is precision. The clean initial state and the comparatively benign environment of a lepton collider are ideally suited to high precision measurements. To take full advantage of the physics potential of ILC places great demands on the detector performance. The design of ILD is driven by these requirements. Excellent calorimetry and tracking are combined to obtain the best possible overall event reconstruction, including the capability to reconstruct individual particles within jets for particle ow calorimetry. This requires excellent spatial resolution for all detector systems. A highly granular calorimeter system is combined with a central tracker which stresses redundancy and efficiency. In addition, efficient reconstruction of secondary vertices and excellent momentum resolution for charged particles are essential for an ILC detector. The interaction region of the ILC is designed to host two detectors, which can be moved into the beam position with a push-pull scheme. The mechanical design of ILD and the overall integration of subdetectors takes these operational condition s into account. Abstract

The CBM experiment will investigate heavy-ion collisions at beam energies from 8 to 45 AGeV at the future accelerator facility FAIR. The goal of the experiment is to study the QCD phase diagram in the vincinity of the QCD critical point. To do so, CBM aims at measuring rare probes among them open charm. In order to identify those rare and short lived particles despite the rich combinatorial background generated in heavy ion collisions, a micro vertex detector (MVD) providing an unprecedented combination of high rate capability and radiation hardness, very light material budget and excellent granularity is required. In this work, we will discuss the concept of this detector and summarize the status of the R&D.
