Abstract

We report the controlled integration, via Dip Pen Nanolithography, of monolayer dots of ferritin-based CoO nanoparticles (12 Bohr magnetons) into the most sensitive areas of a microSQUID sensor. The nearly optimum flux coupling between these nanomagnets and the microSQUID improves the achievable sensitivity by a factor 100, enabling us to measure the linear susceptibility of the molecular array down to very low temperatures (13 mK). This method opens the possibility of applying ac susceptibility experiments to characterize two-dimensional arrays of single molecule magnets within a wide range of temperatures and frequencies., Comment: 4 pages 3 figures

Abstract

Mediterranean freshwater systems are under threat owing to increased drought driven by climate change, intensive human land uses and non‐native species. This is causing increased fish hybridization in isolated watercourses.The genetic and morphological characteristics of hybrids of sympatric native and non‐native fish species were studied in four streams of the Mediterranean Guadalquivir basin (south‐west Spain). Fish morphology was analysed using geometric morphometrics, and molecular determination of parenthood was inferred through one mitochondrial gene (cytb) and one nuclear gene (Beta‐actin) for all hybrids and a subset of pure parental specimens.Molecular analyses confirmed hybrids between the native Squalius alburnoides and non‐native Alburnus alburnus in a stream with continuous flow. Haplotype analyses suggested that they originated from backcrossing of hybrid offspring. Intergeneric crosses between native species S. alburnoides and Pseudochondrostoma willkommii, and S. alburnoides and Iberochondrostoma lemmingii were detected in streams under reduced connectivity scenarios.Morphometrics revealed that hybrid phenotypes were similar to S. alburnoides. In some cases, molecular markers uncovered hybridization events that were neither detected in the field nor by morphometric analyses, potentially supporting a backcrossing/introgression scenario.Hybridization is likely to be increasing in Mediterranean rivers where S. alburnoides are present owing to increased fragmentation caused by summer drought exacerbated by climate change and human land uses and pressures. This can become a problem for these endemic vulnerable species if genetic diversity is lost, morphological homogenization occurs and hybrids cannot be easily detected in the field.The potential risks could be addressed by monitoring and eradication of non‐native species and segregation from natives. To avoid native–native crosses, habitat quality and desiccation risk could be tackled by improved water quality and riparian reforestation to provide shade and reduce evapotranspiration. Abstract

Gibbs's classical thermodynamic framework approximates systems as infinitely large phases separated by infinitely thin surfaces. The range of validity of this classical framework naturally comes under scrutiny as we become interested in the properties of ever smaller systems. This Communication clarifies that while Gibbs's original framework of bulk phase thermodynamics did require modifications to describe the properties of very small (i.e., non-additive) phases, his classical framework remains fundamentally valid to describe the thermodynamic properties of surfaces. We explain why classical surface laws are applicable at the nanoscale, as suggested by simulations and confirmed by experiments. We also show that a generalized Gibbs–Tolman–Koenig–Buff equation and the resulting Tolman's law for surface tension are obtained from a classical thermodynamic analysis in the Tolman region, a region of interaction between the system and the environment. Abstract

Background: The European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) Guidelines cover key aspects of HIV management with major updates every two years. Guideline highlights: The 2019 Guidelines were extended with a new section focusing on drug–drug interactions and other prescribing issues in people living with HIV (PLWH). The recommendations for treatment-naïve PLWH were updated with four preferred regimens favouring unboosted integrase inhibitors. A two-drug regimen with dolutegravir and lamivudine, and a three-drug regimen including doravirine were also added to the recommended initial regimens. Lower thresholds for hypertension were expanded to all PLWH and for cardiovascular disease prevention, the 10-year predicted risk threshold for consideration of antiretroviral therapy (ART) modification was lowered from 20% to 10%. Frailty and obesity were added as new topics. It was specified to use urine albumin to creatinine ratio to screen for glomerular disease and urine protein to creatinine ratio for tubular diseases, and thresholds were streamlined with the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) recommendations. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment recommendations were split into preferred and alternative treatment options. The algorithm for management of recently acquired HCV infection was updated and includes recommendations for early chronic infection management. Treatment of resistant tuberculosis (TB) was streamlined with the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, and new tables on immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome, on when to start ART in the presence of opportunistic infections and on TB drug dosing were included. Conclusions: The EACS Guidelines underwent major revisions of all sections in 2019. They are available in four different formats including a new interactive web-based version and are translated into Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Abstract

En este proyecto se ha tratado de lograr hacer un material apto para su uso como suela de zapatos. Las suelas de zapatillas suelen producirse a partir de una matriz de poliuretano reforzado con petróleo. El petróleo es una de las causas de los problemas del cambio climático. Por ello, vamos a tratar de sustituir el petróleo por otra sustancia, en este caso el aceite de algas. El aceite de algas aparte de hacer que suelas se degraden mejor su extracción es más ecológico, ya que hay sobresaturación de algas en zonas como la costa de Miami y su producción industrial contrastaría problemas ecológicos causados por la industria.

Abstract

Comunicación oral presentada a la: XXX Reunión de la Sociedad Española de Anatomía Patológica Veterinaria (SEAPV). San Pedro del Pinatar, Murcia, 13-15 junio 2018., En noviembre de 2017 se remitió para la necropsia una coneja, cruce industrial, adulta (3 años). La lesión macroscópica más significativa se observó en la arteria aorta, arteria pulmonar y carótidas que aparecían como tubos rígidos y de color blanquecino. También se encontraban afectadas las arterias de las extremidades posteriores y en los riñones se observaron pequeños focos blanquecinos en la unión córtico-medular. Microscópicamente en la aorta ascendente, aorta abdominal, carótidas y arteria pulmonar se observó calcificación de fibras elásticas, focos de metaplasia cartilaginosa, ósea y formación de médula ósea. Las arterias musculares (coronarias, arqueadas renales, hepáticas, mesentéricas, uterinas, ováricas y de la musculatura esquelética) mostraban calcificaciones en la capa media. También se observaron calcificaciones focales en túbulos renales, esclerótica y cartílagos bronquiales. En la mucosa gástrica las glándulas aparecían atróficas por la presencia de amiloide. En conejas reproductoras la calcificación de la aorta es una lesión relativamente frecuente asociada a hipervitaminosis D, administración excesiva de suplementos minerales o lesión renal crónica. La edad también parece ser un factor de riesgo, siendo más frecuente en conejas con más de 2 años. Sin embargo, la metaplasia cartilaginosa y ósea con formación de médula ósea de arterias elásticas son alteraciones menos frecuentes. Aunque su patogenia aún no es clara, se ha sugerido que tanto células indiferenciadas de la capa media del vaso o los propios miocitos, células con gran plasticidad fenotípica, favorecen la formación de estos tejidos conectivos, más como resultado de la lesión previa que como una respuesta adaptativa. La calcificación arterial provoca hipertensión e insuficiencia cardíaca que unida a la pérdida de función gástrica (por amiloidosis) favoreció probablemente el estado de anorexia y emaciación del animal.

Abstract

Background. Tenofovir is a potent inhibitor of human telomerase. The clinical relevance of this inhibition is unknown. Methods. NEAT001/ANRS143 is a randomized trial that showed noninferiority over 96 weeks of ritonavir-boosted darunavir plus raltegravir versus tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine in 805 antiretroviral antiretrovrial-naive HIV-infected adults. We compared changes in whole-blood telomere length measured with quantitative polymerase chain reaction in 201 randomly selected participants (104 raltegravir and 97 tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine). We performed multivariable estimative and predictive linear regression. Results. At week 96, participants receiving tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine had a statistically significant higher gain in telomere length than participants receiving raltegravir. Difference in mean telomere length change between groups (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine minus raltegravir) from baseline to week 96 adjusted by baseline telomere length was 0.031 (P = .009). This difference was not significantly confounded by age, gender, known duration of HIV infection, CD4 (baseline/nadir), CD8 cells, CD4/CD8 ratio, HIV viral load (baseline/week 96), tobacco and alcohol consumption, statins, or hepatitis C. Conclusion. Antiretroviral-naive HIV-infected adults receiving ritonavir-boosted darunavir and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine had a significant higher gain in blood telomere length than those receiving ritonavir-boosted darunavir and raltegravir, suggesting a better initial recovery from HIV-associated immunosenescence.

Abstract

En noviembre de 2017 se remitió para la necropsia una coneja, cruce industrial, adulta (3 años). La lesión macroscópica más significativa se observó en la arteria aorta, arteria pulmonar y carótidas que aparecían como tubos rígidos y de color blanquecino. También se encontraban afectadas las arterias de las extremidades posteriores y en los riñones se observaron pequeños focos blanquecinos en la unión córtico-medular. Microscópicamente en la aorta ascendente, aorta abdominal, carótidas y arteria pulmonar se observó calcificación de fibras elásticas, focos de metaplasia cartilaginosa, ósea y formación de médula ósea. Las arterias musculares (coronarias, arqueadas renales, hepáticas, mesentéricas, uterinas, ováricas y de la musculatura esquelética) mostraban calcificaciones en la capa media. También se observaron calcificaciones focales en túbulos renales, esclerótica y cartílagos bronquiales. En la mucosa gástrica las glándulas aparecían atróficas por la presencia de amiloide. En conejas reproductoras la calcificación de la aorta es una lesión relativamente frecuente asociada a hipervitaminosis D, administración excesiva de suplementos minerales o lesión renal crónica. La edad también parece ser un factor de riesgo, siendo más frecuente en conejas con más de 2 años. Sin embargo, la metaplasia cartilaginosa y ósea con formación de médula ósea de arterias elásticas son alteraciones menos frecuentes. Aunque su patogenia aún no es clara, se ha sugerido que tanto células indiferenciadas de la capa media del vaso o los propios miocitos, células con gran plasticidad fenotípica, favorecen la formación de estos tejidos conectivos, más como resultado de la lesión previa que como una respuesta adaptativa. La calcificación arterial provoca hipertensión e insuficiencia cardíaca que unida a la pérdida de función gástrica (por amiloidosis) favoreció probablemente el estado de anorexia y emaciación del animal.
