Introduction: Depression is a major concern among homeless individuals. Studies link religiosity and spirituality (RS) with lesser depressive symptoms, but evidence is scarce among the homeless. Objectives: This study aims to assess the association between RS and depressive symptoms in homeless individuals in Brazil. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 456 homeless individuals in São Paulo, Brazil. It received approval from the Ethics and Research Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of Itajubá, Brazil. We used adjusted linear regression models to analyze the association between RS and participants' depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). We used the P-DUREL to measure religiosity, FACIT-Sp12 for spirituality, and the Brief-RCOPE scale for religious-spiritual coping strategies. Results: Out of 482 invited participants, 456 (94.6%) completed all questionaries, mostly males (75%) with an average age of 44.53 (SD 12.62) years. About 49.6% had depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 ≥10 points). After controlling for sociodemographic and health variables, factors such as temple/church attendance (≥ 3 times per month), increased religiousness (both organizational and intrinsic), positive religious/spiritual coping, and peace, faith and meaning were inversely related to depressive symptoms. Conversely, dysfunctional use of RS, such as in negative spiritual-religious coping strategies, correlated with heightened depressive symptoms. Conclusions: High depressive symptom prevalence was found among Brazilian homeless individuals. Functional use of RS was negatively linked to depressive symptoms, while dysfunctional RS, like negative spiritual-religious coping strategies, correlated with higher depressive symptoms. These findings can aid healthcare professionals, particularly psychologists and psychiatrists, in addressing RS in the homeless population. This study evaluated the performance, immune response to vaccination, digestive organs, intestinal histomorphometry, and microbiological development in the diet and litter of Isa Brown strains at growing receiving phase alternative additives in the place of antibiotics. Four treatments were arrayed in a completely randomized design: T1) Basal diet without antibiotics, T2) Basal diet with antibiotics, T3) Basal diet with probiotics, and T4) Basal diet without antibiotics and water modified by a photoelectron generator. There were six replications of eight birds each and thus a total of 192 birds. Performance was evaluated for eight weeks and during this period blood samples were collected at 9, 12 and 15 weeks of age for serological evaluation. At the end of the experimental period, 24 birds were euthanized, collecting the intestinal tract and later performing histomorphometry. Microbiological analyses were performed in the experimental diets and in the material of the litter of the boxes. The results obtained were analyzed by analysis of variance and the contrast between treatment means when significant by Tukey's test. The results indicate that the replacement of antibiotics with T3 or T4 did not interfere negatively (P >0.05) in the performance of the birds, immunological response, viscera analyses and intestinal histomorphometry. In addition, use of T3 and T4 might lead to more rapid decomposition of excreta and reduce antibiotic residue in the soil when the litter is used in crop production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is an analysis based on bibliography and empirical knowledge that trait to provide an overview of the Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy Bill text. The law was intended to sets principles, procedures and regulations to manage this type of residual materials, since the previous standards were rather poor, heterogeneous and full of regional contrasts due to the federal political and administrative structure of the country. Under such circumstances, the principal objectives of municipal, state and federal legal regulations were a lot different from each other. Besides, in the absence of a general framework, areas and territories of the country acted individually and generated their own body of principles. In this context, the Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy Bill languished in the Congress for almost 21 years, till to august 2010 was approved, and its submission was a time-consuming process that helped only to show that many complex and bureaucratic barriers needed to be removed in a country with special social, political and institutional features such as Brazil. Methodologically, the paper analyzes the previous disperse legislation and examines the new legislation on solid waste management, making further projections about the challenges derived from the enforcing process of this new law. The addition of nanoclay or cellulose fibers has been presented in the literature as a suitable alternative for reinforcing starch films. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of the simultaneous incorporation of nanoclay (bentonite) and cellulose fibers on the mechanical and water barrier properties of the resultant composite-films. Films were prepared by casting with 3% in weight of cassava starch, using glycerol as plasticizer (0.30 g per g of starch), cellulose fibers at a concentration of 0.30 g of fibers per g of starch and nanoclay (0.05 g clay per g starch and 0.10 g clay per g starch). The addition of cellulose fibers and nanoclay increased the tensile strength of the films 8.5 times and the Young modulus 24 times but reduced the elongation capacity 14 times. The water barrier properties of the composite-films to which bentonite and cellulose fibers were added were approximately 60% inferior to those of starch films. Diffractograms showed that the nanoclay was intercalated in the polymeric matrix. These results indicate that the simultaneous addition of bentonite and cellulose fibers is a suitable alternative to increase the tensile strength of the films and decrease their water vapor permeabilities. Nanocomposites are multiphase materials of which, at least one of the phases, has a dimension smaller than 100 nm. These materials have attracted technological and scientific interest due to their multifunctional characteristics and potential, which allow them to combine unique properties which are not found in traditional commercial materials, such as natural rubber alone. The objective of this work is to analyse the toxicity of nanoparticles and nanocomposites when applied to mammal cells in order to obtain bioactive agents, as well as to evaluate the potential to be applied in biological systems. Ferroelectric ceramic nanoparticles of KSr2Nb5O15 (KSN) and paramagnetic ceramic nanoparticles Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 (NZF) were prepared and utilized to produce functional and multifunctional nanocomposites based on vulcanized natural rubber (NR/KSN and NR/NZF) with different nanoparticle concentrations. For both kinds of nanoparticles and both classes of nanocomposites, independently of the nanoparticle concentration, it is not possible to observe any reduction of the cellular viability until the incubation time is finished. In this way, these results point to the possibility of using these nanoparticles and nanocomposites, from the toxicity point of view, as bioactivity agents in biological systems based on mammalian cells.

A technique for improving the performance of an OSNR monitor based on a polarisation nulling method with the downhill simplex algorithm is demonstrated. Establishing a compromise between accuracy and acquisition time, the monitor has been calibrated to 0.72 dB/390 ms and 0.98 dB/320 ms, over a range of nearly 21 dB. We investigated the changes of saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ksat, with depth of latosols developed on Precambrian basement rocks under primary rainforest, pasture and teak. In all cases, K sat decreased with depth, with most of the decrease occurring between the surface and a depth of 30 cm. In conjunction with prevailing rainfall intensities and frequencies, this anisotropy supportsa pronounced lateral component of hillslope flow paths, and also of overland flow under pasture. Our results are at variance with data from other latosols where Ksat tends to increase with depth,and hence suggest that considerable restraint is needed in generalization and extrapolation until results from a coordinated effort at hydrology-oriented data collection become available. Water samples were collected from 7 locations along major rivers of Piracicaba River basin for 22 months. The 4 upstream points representnon-polluted sites and the 3 downriver points represent polluted sites. Due to sewage input, concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), major conservative cations and anions increased significantly in the polluted sites. The major increases were observed for sodium, chloride and sulfate. Nitrate was anexception for this pattern, with similar concentrations between polluted and non-polluted sites. The probable cause was reduction of nitrate to ammonium in the polluted sites, where anoxic conditions prevail. Most of the variables had an inverse correlation with water discharge, especially in the polluted points. The sewage load was diluted by precipitation and surface waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a dearth of scientific information about the physicochemical characteristics of eggs from ratite birds including emus. Thus, an experiment was carried out with 19 laying emu ((Dromaius novaehollandiae) hens, maintained in cages, and divided into two groups according to age, to record morphometric and physicochemical characteristics of the eggs. The width, length, average weight, form index, Haugh unit, yolk index, percentage of egg components, yolk pigmentation, pH of yolk and albumen, and eggshell weight and thickness were recorded. This morphometric characterization was influenced by the age of the hen. Neither the yolk nor albumen pH was influenced by the age of the bird. The eggs from emus that were raised in captivity presented physical and morphometric characteristics that varied with age, although they remained within the ranges of observations that were previously observed for ratite species, but were different from those of domestic chickens. The high fragility and easy rupture of the vitelline membrane in the emu eggs may limit the use of this product in industrial applications. Schistosoma mansoni, an intravascular parasitic worm and the causative agent of schistosomiasis, relies on its tegument (outer layer) for survival and host interaction. This study explored the morphology and mechanical properties of S. mansoni tegument using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Notably, we employed the PeakForce Quantitative Nanomechanical Mapping (PF-QNM) mode in air, enabling simultaneous acquisition of 3D topography and mechanical property contrasts (adhesion, elastic modulus). Additionally, nanoindentation (AFM contact mode) was performed on female worm tegument for elastic modulus measurement. Both techniques revealed an elastic modulus range of fractions or units of GPa for the tegument. Interestingly, mechanical property maps, particularly adhesion contrast, displayed a recurring pattern of light and dark bands. We also measured the depth of annular furrows on the female tegument, finding an average of 128 ± 10 nm. These findings establish AFM, particularly PF-QNM, as a valuable tool to characterize S. mansoni tegument properties, offering insights for future investigations into parasite biology and its response to immunological or pharmacological challenges., (© 2024. Background: Schistosomiasis, caused by the parasitic blood fluke Schistosoma mansoni, is a significant global health concern, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The available chemotherapeutic drug is restricted to praziquantel with present problems related to efficacy, toxicity and resistance, justifying the search for new drugs. Different natural products, including γ-lactones, have demonstrated anthelmintic activity. Thus, in this study, new γ-lactones from Porcelia ponderosa were investigated for their anti-S. mansoni effects in vitro and in vivo., Purpose: To evaluate the therapeutical potential against S. mansoni of the mixture of γ-lactones 1 + 2 obtained from Porcelia ponderosa seeds., Study Design and Methods: The precipitate formed during the concentration of CH 2 Cl 2 extract from seeds of P. ponderosa showed to be composed by a mixture of the new γ-lactones 1 + 2 (in a ratio 77:23) which were chemically characterized using NMR and ESI-HRMS. This mixture was evaluated in vitro and in vivo against S. mansoni, using a murine model of schistosomiasis. Additionally, toxicity of the mixture of 1 + 2 (77:23) was determined using mammalian cell lines (in vitro) or the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (in vivo)., Results: Seeds of P. ponderosa afforded a mixture of two unreported γ-lactones, 3‑hydroxy-4-methylene-2-(tetracosa-17'Z,23'-diene-13',15'-diynyl)‑but-2-enolide (1) and 3‑hydroxy-4-methylene-2-(tetracos-17'Z-ene-13',15'-diynyl)‑but-2-enolide (2). Initially, the antischistosomal activity of the mixture of 1 + 2 (77:23) was investigated in vitro, and obtained results demonstrate reduced activity against Schistosoma mansoni worms (EC 50 of 83.3 μg/ml) in comparison to positive control praziquantel (EC 50 of 1.5 μg/ml). However, when tested in vivo using oral administration at 400 mg kg -1 , the standard dose used in the murine model of schistosomiasis, the mixture of 1 + 2 (77:23) revealed expressive reductions in both worm burden (65.7 %) and egg production (97.2 %), similar of those observed to praziquantel (89.7 % and 91.5 %, respectively). On the other hand, when treated using 200 and 100 mg kg -1 , reductions in worm burden (25.7 and 12.4 %) and egg production (33.6 and 13.3 %) were also observed.
