Abstract: ITER envisages the use of two heating neutral beam injectors plus an optional one as part of the auxiliary heating and current drive system. The 16.5 MW expected neutral beam power per injector is several notches higher than worldwide existing facilities. A Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated to developing and characterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accelerator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full performances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign. Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER NBI featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of in-vessel components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants are already under final testing and commissioning. Integration, commissioning and tests of the 1MV power supplies are essential for this first-of-kind system, unparalleled both in research and industry field. The integrated test to confirm 1MV output by combining invertor systems, DC generators and transmission lines extracted errors/accidents in some components. To realize a concrete system for ITER, solutions for the repair and the improvement of the system were developed. Hence, NBTF is emerging as a necessary facility, due to the large gap with existing injectors, effectively dedicated to identify issues and find solutions to enable successful ITER NBI operations in a time bound fashion.

Abstract: Three years of experiments on SPIDER allowed characterization of the main features of the source plasma and of the negative ion beam, in the original design configuration. For the large dimensions of the source chamber, and of the extraction area, the investigation of the single-beamlet currents and of the source plasma uniformity had to be carried out to extend the knowledge gained in smaller prototype sources. The configuration of the multiple RF drivers and filter field topologies were found to cause a peculiar behavior in the plasma confinement in the drivers, creating left-right asymmetries which were also visible in the extracted negative ion currents, even after the early implementation of a new scheme of plasma-grid current send and return busbars that greatly improved performance at high filter fields. The plasma properties in the driver and expansion region as well as the positive ion energy at the extraction region were studied in different experimental conditions, and interpreted also with the support of numerical models, suggesting that an improved plasma confinement could contribute to the increase of the plasma density, and to a certain extent to a lowering of the plasma potential profile; both effects shall contribute to increase the presence of cold negative ions for the formation of low-divergence beamlets. Early results related to unwanted RF discharges on the back of the plasma source and the gas conductance of the beam source suggested the reduction of the vessel pressure as mitigation, leading to the definition of a new pumping system. The difficulties related to the simultaneous operation, stable control and high-power operation of multiple RF self-oscillating vacuum tube based RF generators were an unambiguous obstruction to the experimentation, calling for the implementation of RF solid-state amplifiers. Abstract: To reach fusion conditions and control the plasma configuration in ITER, the next step in tokamak fusion research, two neutral beam injectors (NBIs) will supply 16.5 MW each, by neutralizing accelerated negative hydrogen or deuterium ions. The requirements of ITER NBIs (40A/1 MeV D- ions for ≤1 h, 46A/870 keV H- ions for ≤1000 s) have never been simultaneously attained. So in the Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF, Consorzio RFX, Italy) the operation of the full-scale ITER NBI prototype (MITICA) will be tested and optimised up to full performances, focussing on accelerator (including voltage holding), beam optics, neutralisation, residual ion removal. The NBTF includes also the full-scale prototype of the ITER NBI source with 100 keV particle energy (SPIDER), for early investigation of: negative ion production and extraction, source uniformity, negative ion current density and beam optics. This paper will describe the main results of the first two years of SPIDER operation, devoted to characterizing plasma and beam parameters, including investigation of RF-plasma coupling efficiency and magnetic filter field effectiveness in reducing co-extracted electrons. SPIDER is progressing towards the first caesium injection, which aims at increasing the negative ion density. A major shutdown, planned for 2021, to solve the issues identified during the operation and to carry out programmed modifications, will be outlined. The installation of each MITICA power supply and auxiliary system is completed; in-vessel mechanical components are under procurement by Fusion for Energy (F4E). Integration, commissioning and test of the power supplies, procured by F4E and QST, as the Japanese Domestic Agency (JADA), will be presented. Abstract: Giant negative ion sources for neutral beam injectors deliver huge negative ion currents, thanks to their multi-beamlet configuration. As the single-beamlet optics defines the transmission losses along the beamline, the extraction of a similar current for all beamlets is extremely desirable, in order to facilitate the beam source operation (i.e., around perveance match). This Review investigates the correlation between the vertical profile of beam intensity and the vertical profiles of plasma properties at the extraction region of the source, focusing on the influence of increasing cesium injection. Only by the combined use of all available source diagnostics, described in this Review, can beam features on the scale of the non-uniformities be investigated with a sufficient space resolution. At RF power of 50 kW/driver, with intermediate bias currents and a filter field of 2.4 mT, it is found that the central part of the four vertical beam segments exhibits comparable plasma density and beamlet currents; at the edges of the central segments, both the beam and electron density appear to decrease (probably maintaining fixed electron-to-ion ratio); at the bottom of the source, an increase of cesium injection can compensate for the vertical drifts that cause a much higher presence of electrons and a lower amount of negative ions.

Abstract: Heating neutral beam (HNB) injectors, necessary to achieve burning conditions and to control plasma instabilities in ITER, are characterized by such demanding parameters that a neutral beam test facility (NBTF) dedicated to their development and optimization is being realized in Padua (Italy) with direct contributions from the Italian government (through Consorzio RFX as the host entity) and the ITER international organization (with kind contributions from the ITER domestic agencies of Europe, Japan and India) and technical and scientific support from various European laboratories and universities. The NBTF hosts two experiments: SPIDER, devoted to ion source optimization for the required source performance, and MITICA, the full-size prototype of the ITER HNB, with an ion source identical to SPIDER. This paper gives an overview of the progress towards NBTF realization, with particular emphasis on issues discovered during this phase of activity and on solutions adopted to minimize the impact on the schedule and maintain the goals of the facilities. The realization of MITICA is well advanced; operation is expected to start in 2023 due to the long procurement time of the in-vessel mechanical components. The beam source power supplies, operating at 1 MV, are in an advanced phase of realization; all high-voltage components have been installed and the complex insulation test phase began in 2018. At the same time, construction and installation of SPIDER plant systems was successfully completed with their integration into the facility. The mechanical components of the SPIDER ion source were installed inside the vessel and connected to the plants. Integrated commissioning with the control, protection and safety systems ended positively and the first experimental phase has begun. The first results of the SPIDER experiment, with data from operational diagnostics, and the plans for the 1 MV insulation tests on the MITICA high-voltage components are presented.

Abstract: The negative-ion beam source SPIDER, which is the full-scale prototype source for the ITER neutral beam injector, recently started the operation with caesium. This experimental phase follows three years of volume operation, devoted to the commissioning of the plants and to the integrated test of the ion source and accelerator. The ion source, composed of eight RF drivers connected to a large plasma chamber from which the negative ions are extracted, was operated up to a RF power of 400kW, and beam energy up to 50kV, and plasma discharges limited to less than one minute This contribution will describe the main results of the first campaign with caesium in SPIDER. The repetition of short plasma and beam extraction blips with different injection rates was applied, to study the effect on plasma and beam parameters. The caesiation procedure adopted in SPIDER will be described (caesium injection rate, duty cycle of plasma-on, RF power, source gas pressure) together with the effects of the source parameters on the extracted beam and its uniformity. Even though the use of a much reduced number of beamlets was a strong limitation in terms of total accelerated current (a mask at the plasma grid covered 1252 apertures over 1280 to limit the gas load to the vacuum pumps), it provided advantages in the study of the caesium effect on the beam, such as the introduction of dedicated diagnostics for the single beamlets, and the identification of the beamlet current and optics.

Abstract: An overview of the recent operations and the main results of cesium injection in the Source for the Production of Ions of Deuterium Extracted from Rf plasma (SPIDER) negative ion source are described in this contribution. In experiments without cesium injection, all SPIDER plants were tested to verify the basic expectations on the operational parameters (e.g., electron cooling effectiveness of magnetic filter field) and to determine its operational region. For beam properties, it was shown that the current density varies across the beam in the vertical direction. In preliminary cesium experiments, the expected increase of negative ion current and simultaneous decrease of co-extracted electrons were found, along with the influence of the control parameters (polarization of the plasma electrodes, magnetic filter field) on the SPIDER beam uniformity in the horizontal and vertical directions. It was shown that non-Gaussian tails can be identified in the angular distribution on the plane perpendicular to the beam propagation direction. Stray particles, nonhomogeneous beam and large divergence might result in unexpected heat and particle loads over ITER neutral beam injector (NBI) accelerator grids; it is the goal of SPIDER to assess and possibly to identify suitable methods for controlling these beam features. A major shutdown, planned for late 2021, to solve the issues identified during the operation and to carry out scheduled modifications, is outlined. Such improvements are expected to allow SPIDER to pursue the ITER requirements in terms of negative ion current, electron-to-ion ratio, and beam duration.

Abstract: Caesium oven prototypes for the prototype source of the ITER neutral beam injectors have been tested in CATS facility. Three types of diagnostics are available to determine the Cs vapour emission rate, the Cs density at various positions in the vacuum chamber and the density integrated over a line of sight. In this paper, we present a model to describe the dynamic equilibrium in the evaporation chamber of CATS during Cs evaporation. The model includes sticking and energy accommodation of the Cs atoms to the walls, calculates the flux density at the surfaces and provides the Cs atom density at the desired locations in the volume. By this model, we correlate the Cs emission with the equilibrium density, measured respectively by Langmuir-Taylor (LT) detector embedded in the Cs oven and by a movable LT detector and by Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (LAS). The experimental data, obtained in a background gas pressure of 10-7 mbar, are well matched with the simulations considering a sticking coefficient of 3%.

Abstract: The ITER Heating Neutral Beam (HNB) injector is required to deliver 16.7 MW of power into the plasma from a neutralised beam of H-/D- negative ions, produced by an RF source and accelerated up to 1 MeV. To enhance the H-/D- production, the ion source needs to be coated with caesium to reduce its work function. Cs must be routinely evaporated in the source by means of dedicated ovens embedded in the source. Controlling and monitoring the evaporation rate of caesium inside the source is fundamental to attain the desired performances on the ITER HNB. In the Neutral Beam Test Facility at Consorzio RFX the prototype RF negative ion source SPIDER has been developed and built. Currently SPIDER is in operation. In SPIDER, liquid Cs based ovens will be used to inject Cs vapours inside the source. The CAesium Test Stand (CATS) has been specifically designed and set up for testing, commissioning, and characterizing Cs ovens in vacuum, in terms of repeatability of the Cs evaporation and deposition onto surfaces. To this aim, a set of diagnostics were installed: fixed Surface Ionization Detectors (SID), embedded in the oven and located in front of the oven nozzle apertures, movable SIDs, to reconstruct the angular distribution of the emission, a quartz microbalance, at a fixed position to provide the cumulated caesium flux, and the laser absorption spectroscopy, to measure the line-integrated caesium density. The poster will present the CATS set- up with a description of the layout and the present configuration of the diagnostic set-up and future upgrades.

Abstract: In view of the long term operation of neutral beam injectors (NBI) used for stellaratorand tokamak heating and current drive, the negative ion source must be carefully optimized,especially because not only plasma but also surface wall conditions are involved in H- or D-production. The NIO1 (negative ion optimization phase 1) installation was developed and isoperated since 2014 (in close collaboration between Consorzio RFX and INFN), as a convenientbenchmark to study innovative solutions and to address physical questions. The comparativelysmaller size of NIO1 (a relatively compact and modular 9 beamlet H- source) is of evidentadvantage for detailed modeling. The apparent plasma impedance is well in agreement withnegligible rf reflection at plasma on, and reflections with plasma off (about 25 %) are well withinlimits tolerable by rf amplifier; transition between E and H modes of rf coupling can be controlledby increasing rf power or by decreasing gas pressure. The filter field intensity, Bx, has beenextended to span the [-12, 5] mT range, and as a trend, source performances improve with |Bx|.Status and results of a first NIO1 cesium oven are reported. Installation of the Cavity Ring DownSpectrometer (CRDS) and recent years progress of beam diagnostics and of the quality of thevolume-produced H- beam are briefly discussed, together with the status of the NIO1 full power"end calorimeter/beam imaging attenuator", to be placed at the end flange with auxiliary flangesfor infrared observation. Conceptual tests of energy recovery system, perhaps using this fullpower calorimeter are also summarized.

Abstract: The ITER Heating Neutral Beam (HNB) injectors, one of the tools necessary both to achieve burning conditions and to control plasma instabilities, are characterized by such demanding parameters as to require the construction of a Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) dedicated to their development and optimization. The NBTF was realized in Padua (Italy), with the direct contribution of the Italian government, through the Consorzio RFX as the host entity, IO, the in kind contributions of three Domestic Agencies (F4E, JADA, INDA) and the technical and scientific support of various European laboratories and universities. The NBTF hosts two experiments: SPIDER and MITICA. The former is devoted to the optimization of the HNB and DNB ion sources and to the achievement of the required source performances. MITICA is the full size prototype of the ITER HNB, with an ion source identical to the one used in SPIDER. This paper gives an overview of the progress of the NBTF realization with particular emphasis on issues discovered during this phase of activities and to the adopted solutions in order to minimize the impact on the schedule while maintaining the goals of the facilities. The realization of MITICA is well advanced; it is expected to enter into operation in 2023 due to the long procurement times of the in-vessel mechanical components. The power supply designed to operate at 1MV are in an advanced phase of realization; all the high voltage components have been installed and the complex insulation test phase has begun in 2018. The construction and installation of SPIDER plant systems was successfully completed with their integration into the facility. The mechanical components of the ion source were installed inside the vessel and connected to the plants. The integrated commissioning with control (CODAS), protection and safety systems ended positively and the first experimental phase began. Finally, the first results of the SPIDER experimentation and of the 1MV insulation tests on the MITICA high voltage components are presented.

Abstract: The ion source NIO1 (Negative Ion Optimization 1) is a versatile multiaperture H- source, capable of continuous regime operation, with the plasma generated by a 2 MHz/2.5 kW radiofrequency (rf) power supply and nine beamlet extraction, operated since 2014 in close collaboration between Consorzio RFX and INFN-LNL. It aims to partly reproduce the conditions of the much larger ion sources built or in construction for neutral beam injectors of fusion devices in a compact and modular ion source, where effects of individual source components can be rapidly verified and compared to simulation code results. Due to the need of assessing negative ion production limits (especially without cesiation) in continuous operation for the perspective of future fusion reactors and to the large importance of magnetic field for source optimization, several configuration changes were tried (both inside the ion source and for the embedded magnets inside the accelerator grids) and investigated, with material ranging from hard ferrite to SmCo to NdFeB. Evidence of the effect of the accelerator fringe field inside the ion source is discussed here and in companion presentations. The radiofrequency system takes full advantage of the frequency tuning amplifier capability (+/- 150 kHz installed, 0/+20 kHz used), and it is worth noting, that no adjustment of matching box capacitors was necessary in the last 3 years. Major diagnostic systems (including CCD cameras and BES measurement) have been integrated with the acquisition system along with the date measured by several power supplies (including the high voltage supplies, the RF generator and bias supplies, the pressure measurements and the beam currents).

Abstract: The ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF), called PRIMA (Padova Research on ITER Megavolt Accelerator), is hosted in Padova, Italy and includes two experiments: MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER heating neutral beam injector, and SPIDER, the full-size radio frequency negative-ions source. The NBTF realization and the exploitation of SPIDER and MITICA have been recognized as necessary to make the future operation of the ITER heating neutral beam injectors efficient and reliable, fundamental to the achievement of thermonuclear-relevant plasma parameters in ITER. This paper reports on design and R&D carried out to construct PRIMA, SPIDER and MITICA, and highlights the huge progress made in just a few years, from the signature of the agreement for the NBTF realization in 2011, up to now - when the buildings and relevant infrastructures have been completed, SPIDER is entering the integrated commissioning phase and the procurements of several MITICA components are at a well advanced stage

Abstract: SPIDER is one of two projects of the ITER Neutral Beam Test Facility under construction in Padova, Italy, at the Consorzio RFX premises. It will have a 100 keV beam source with a full-size prototype of the radiofrequency ion source for the ITER neutral beam injector (NBI) and also, similar to the ITER diagnostic neutral beam, it is designed to operate with a pulse length of up to 3600 s, featuring an ITER-like magnetic filter field configuration (for high extraction of negative ions) and caesium oven (for high production of negative ions) layout as well as a wide set of diagnostics. These features will allow a reproduction of the ion source operation in ITER, which cannot be done in any other existing test facility. SPIDER realization is well advanced and the first operation is expected at the beginning of 2018, with the mission of achieving the ITER heating and diagnostic NBI ion source requirements and of improving its performance in terms of reliability and availability. This paper mainly focuses on the preparation of the first SPIDER operations - integration and testing of SPIDER components, completion and implementation of diagnostics and control and formulation of operation and research plan, based on a staged strategy
