Psychological problems like procrastination, perfectionism, low self-esteem, test anxiety and stress are common among college students. There are evidence-based interventions available for these problems that not only have direct effects on these problems, but also indirect effects on mental disorders such as depression and anxiety disorders. Targeting these psychological problems may offer new opportunities to prevent and treat mental disorders in a way that is less stigmatizing to students. In this study we examined the association of five psychological problems with five common mental disorders (panic, generalized anxiety, bipolar, major depressive, and substance use disorder) in a sample of 2,449 students from two Dutch universities. Psychological problems were measured with one item for each problem and mental disorders were measured with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview Screening Scales. Associations were examined with Poisson regression models as relative risks (RR) of the disorders as a function of the psychological problems. The population attributable fraction (PAF) indicates by what percentage the prevalence of the mental disorder would be reduced if the psychological problem was addressed successfully by an intervention. Especially generalized anxiety disorder was strongly associated with psychological problems (strong associations with stress and low self-esteem and moderately with test anxiety). The group with three or more psychological problems had a strongly increased risk for generalized anxiety (RR = 11.25; 95% CI: 7.51-16.85), and a moderately increase risk for major depression (RR = 3.22; 95% CI: 2.63-3.95), panic disorder (RR = 3.19; 95% CI: 1.96-5.20) and bipolar disorder (RR = 3.66; 95% CI: 2.40-5.58). The PAFs for having any of the psychological problems (one or more) were considerable, especially for generalized anxiety (60.8%), but also for panic disorder (35.1%), bipolar disorder (30.6%) and major depression (34.0%). We conclude that common psychological problems are associated with mental disorders and with each other. After adjustment, psychological problems are associated with different patterns of mental disorders. If the impact of the psychological problems could be taken away, the prevalence of several mental disorders would be reduced considerably. People use herbal preparations (food supplements and herbal tea) with St John’s wort, amongst others to feel and sleep better. However, these herbal preparations can reduce the effect of medicines, or enhance their effect. These interactions can have serious health effects. Herbal preparations with St John’s wort, for example, reduce the effect of certain medicines prescribed for fungal or viral infections and for cancer (chemotherapy). The effect of certain consciousness-lowering agents, e.g. sedative medicines, and consciousness-stimulating agents, e.g. antidepressants, is actually enhanced. The use of herbal preparations with St John’s wort may also pose health risks when used alone and not in combination with medicines. For example, the skin can be damaged faster (sunburn) if people sit in the sun after using St John’s wort. Other effects such as dizziness, diarrhea and anxiety have also been reported after the use of herbal preparations containing St. John's wort. It is not known what effects occur after people use these herbal preparations for a long time. There is also insufficient information available to determine whether the use of St John’s wort during pregnancy is safe for the unborn child. Moreover, the composition of herbal preparations containing St John’s wort can vary greatly, and it is often not known what exactly is in it. This makes it difficult to estimate the effects of a product. RIVM draws these conclusions based on a risk assessment on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS). RIVM advises consumers to be cautious with the use of herbal preparations containing St John’s wort, and to not use these products in combination with medicines. RIVM advises VWS to draft legislation on the use of St John’s wort in herbal preparations.

Over het algemeen is voedsel in Nederland veilig. De veiligheid kan echter worden bedreigd door microbiologische besmetting en schadelijke chemische stoffen. Het RIVM heeft de huidige stand van zaken beschreven over de voedselveiligheid in Nederland en de maatregelen die nodig zijn om het hoge niveau te handhaven. Voedselinfecties zijn niet volledig te vermijden. Dat komt doordat levensmiddelen op diverse momenten in de productieketen, van grondstof tot en met bereiding, besmet kunnen raken met ziekteverwekkers. Voedselinfecties worden meestal veroorzaakt door bacteriën (zoals Salmonella en Campylobacter), virussen (zoals het norovirus) en parasieten (zoals Toxoplasma). Deze ziekteverwekkers kunnen worden gevonden in rauwe (of niet goed verhitte) dierlijke en plantaardige producten. Maar ook mensen die betrokken zijn bij de productie van ons voedsel kunnen door onvoldoende hygiëne een besmetting veroorzaken. Jaarlijks worden ongeveer 700.000 mensen ziek door een voedselinfectie; dit is gelijk aan 1 op de 24 personen. De belangrijkste veroorzakers zijn het norovirus (dat vooral op vis en schelpdieren wordt gevonden), Campylobacter (op kip) en Salmonella (in ei). De meeste infecties beperken zich tot relatief milde, kortdurende maag- darmklachten. Ze kunnen soms ook chronische gezondheidsklachten veroorzaken, zoals gewrichtsontsteking en het prikkelbare darm syndroom. De blootstelling van de consument aan chemische stoffen die de overheid voor het voedselproductieproces toestaat, zoals additieven ('E- nummers') en gewasbeschermingsmiddelen, is zo laag dat er geen risico voor de volksgezondheid is. Voor sommige stoffen die als verontreiniging in ons voedsel voorkomen (vanuit het milieu, door verwerking of bereiding) geldt dat de inname van een deel van de consumenten hoger is dan wat als veilig wordt geadviseerd. Het gaat hier voor kinderen en volwassenen om drie schimmelgifstoffen (mycotoxinen) en acrylamide, en voor 2-6 jarigen ook om de zware metalen cadmium en lood. Het gaat hierbij niet om de gemiddelde inname, maar om volwassenen en kinderen met een hoge inname. Als de blootstelling aan deze stoffen langdurig te hoog is kunnen ze schadelijk zijn voor de gezondheid. Producenten van voedingsmiddelen zijn via diverse nationale en Europese wetten verplicht preventieve maatregelen te nemen om te voorkomen of te beperken dat ziekteverwekkers of chemische stoffen in hun producten zitten. Voor ziekteverwekkers in grondstoffen en eindproducten zijn criteria opgesteld. Voor chemische stoffen gelden productnormen. Op de naleving van deze criteria en productnormen wordt in Nederland door de Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) toegezien. Dit rapport is een achtergrondstudie voor de rapportage 'Wat ligt op ons bord? Gezond, veilig en duurzaam eten in Nederland' van het RIVM die op 24 januari 2017 is verschenen. Hierin worden de aspecten van gezond, veilig en ecologisch duurzaam voedsel geïntegreerd weergegeven.

Background: It has recently been proposed that a key motivation for joining groups is the protection from consequences of negative behaviours, such as norm violations. Here we empirically test this claim by investigating whether cooperative decisions and the punishment of associated fairness-based norm violations are different in individuals vs. collectives in economic games. Methods: In the ultimatum game, participants made or received offers that they could reject at a cost to their outcome, a form of social punishment. In the dictator game with third-party punishment, participants made offers to a receiver while being observed by a punisher, or could themselves punish unfair offers. Results: Participants made lower offers when making their decision as part of a group as compared to alone. This difference correlated with participants’ overall mean offers: those who were generally less generous were even less so in a group, suggesting that the collective structure was compatible with their intention. Participants were slower when punishing vs not punishing an unfair offer. Importantly here, they were slower when deciding whether to punish or not to punish groups as compared to individuals, only when the offer concerned them directly in second party punishment. Participants thus take more time to punish others, and to make their mind on whether to punish or not when facing a group of proposers. Conclusions: Together, these results show that people behave differently in a group, both in their willingness to share with others and in their punishment of norm violations. This could be explained by the fact that being in a collective structure allows to share responsibility with others, thereby protecting from negative consequences of norm violations.

Voedingssupplementen met cafeïne worden bijvoorbeeld gebruikt om intensiever te kunnen sporten, sneller af te vallen of zich beter te kunnen concentreren. Deze voedingssupplementen bevatten vaak hoge gehaltes cafeïne. Mensen kunnen hierdoor meer cafeïne binnenkrijgen dan veilig is voor de gezondheid. Ze kunnen dan een te hoge bloeddruk krijgen, hoofdpijn, of rusteloos worden. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van het RIVM in opdracht van het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (VWS). De Europese Voedselveiligheidsautoriteit (EFSA) heeft maximale hoeveelheden cafeïne vastgesteld die veilig zijn om binnen te krijgen. Voor volwassenen bijvoorbeeld komt de veilige dagelijkse hoeveelheid overeen met vier tot zes koppen koffie. Door het gebruik van sommige voedingssupplementen met cafeïne kunnen de veilige hoeveelheden worden overschreden. Dit kan zeker gebeuren wanneer mensen deze voedingssupplementen combineren met andere producten die cafeïne bevatten, zoals koffie, thee en chocolade. In de Europese Unie is er geen wettelijke limiet voor de maximale hoeveelheid cafeïne in voedingssupplementen. VWS kan de uitkomsten van dit onderzoek gebruiken om een aanvraag te doen bij de Europese Commissie om cafeïne in voedingssupplementen op Europees niveau te reguleren.
