Abstract

Quantum Graph Neural Networks (QGNNs) represent a novel fusion of quantum computing and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), aimed at overcoming the computational and scalability challenges inherent in classical GNNs that are powerful tools for analyzing data with complex relational structures but suffer from limitations such as high computational complexity and over-smoothing in large-scale applications. Quantum computing, leveraging principles like superposition and entanglement, offers a pathway to enhanced computational capabilities. This paper critically reviews the state-of-the-art in QGNNs, exploring various architectures. We discuss their applications across diverse fields such as high-energy physics, molecular chemistry, finance and earth sciences, highlighting the potential for quantum advantage. Additionally, we address the significant challenges faced by QGNNs, including noise, decoherence, and scalability issues, proposing potential strategies to mitigate these problems. 2. Towards Efficient Quantum Hybrid Diffusion Models

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new methodology to design quantum hybrid diffusion models, derived from classical U-Nets with ResNet and Attention layers. Specifically, we propose two possible different hybridization schemes combining quantum computing's superior generalization with classical networks' modularity. In the first one, we acted at the vertex: ResNet convolutional layers are gradually replaced with variational circuits to create Quantum ResNet blocks. In the second proposed architecture, we extend the hybridization to the intermediate level of the encoder, due to its higher sensitivity in the feature extraction process. In order to conduct an in-depth analysis of the potential advantages stemming from the integration of quantum layers, images generated by quantum hybrid diffusion models are compared to those generated by classical models, and evaluated in terms of several quantitative metrics. The results demonstrate an advantage in using a hybrid quantum diffusion models, as they generally synthesize better-quality images and converges faster. Abstract

Virological evaluation was performed on equine semen to detect the presence of papillomaviruses (PVs) using droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) as the aim of this study was to investigate whether the sperm from asymptomatic stallions harbors ovine papillomaviruses (OaPVs). Twenty-seven semen samples were analyzed, 18 of which were commercially acquired. The remaining nine samples comprising semen and peripheral blood, were collected from nine stallions with no apparent signs of PV-related diseases during clinical examination at the Didactic Veterinary University Hospital (DVUH) of Naples. OaPV was detected in 26 semen samples. OaPV1 was the most prevalent virus infecting equine semen. OaPV1 infected 21 semen samples (~80.8%) and showed a high number of DNA and RNA copies per microliter. qPCR was used to detect OaPV1 DNA in the 18 semen samples. ddPCR was used to detect and quantify the expression of OaPV2, OaPV3, and OaPV4. qPCR failed to detect DNA for these genotypes. Additionally, ddPCR was used to detect the transcriptionally active OaPV1 in six blood and semen samples from the same stallion. ddPCR failed to detect any nucleic acids in OaPVs in peripheral blood samples from the three stallions. In one semen sample, ddPCR detected OaPV1 DNA but failed to detect any nucleic acid in the remaining two semen samples, and peripheral blood from the same animals of the remaining 18 semen samples was not available, OaPV1 and OaPV4 were responsible for nine and five single infections, respectively. Abstract

Equine sarcoids are caused by infection with bovine papillomavirus (BPV) types 1, 2, and possibly 13. However, a number of sarcoids lack BPV DNA, and new potential etiological agents for sarcoid diseases need to be considered. High-performance digital droplet polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) was used for the quantitative detection of ovine papillomavirus (OaPV) types 1–4 DNA from 63 sarcoid DNA samples collected in Austria. All samples were comparatively evaluated for OaPV DNA loads by qPCR. Conventional PCR and amplicon sequencing were used to validate the data. Of the 63 sarcoid DNA isolates, ddPCR was able to detect 22 samples harboring OaPV DNA (34.92%), whereas only five of the OaPV-positive samples were revealed by qPCR (22.72%). The differences in detection by ddPCR and qPCR were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The detected OaPV types were OaPV1, 3, and 4. Both methods failed to detect OaPV2 DNA, which could be due to the limited number of examined samples. Importantly, ddPCR detected multiple types of OaPV DNA in seven cases, whereas the qPCR failed to detect multiple infections. This study is the first to provide evidence of the presence of OaPV types 1, 3, and 4 DNA in a subset of equine sarcoids. Abstract

The increasing plastic pollution of the world’s oceans represents a serious threat to marine ecosystems and has become a well-known topic garnering growing public attention. The global input of plastic waste into the oceans is estimated to be approximately 10 million tons per year and predicted to rise by one order of magnitude by 2025. More than 90% of the plastic that enters the oceans is thought to end up on the seafloor, and seafloor sediment samples show that plastics are concentrated in confined morphologies and sedimentary environments such as submarine canyons. These canyons are occasionally flushed by powerful gravity-driven sediment flows called turbidity currents, which transport vast volumes of sediment to the deep sea and deposit sediment in deep-sea fans. As such, turbidity currents may also transport plastics present in the canyon and bury plastics in deep-sea fans. These fans may therefore act as sinks for seafloor plastics. Here we present a comprehensive dataset showing the spatial distribution of microplastics in seafloor sediments from the Congo Canyon, offshore West Africa. Multicores taken from 16 locations along the canyon, sampled different sedimentary sub-environments including the canyon thalweg, canyon terraces, and distal lobe. Microplastics were extracted from the sediments by density separation and the polymer type, size, and shape of all individual microplastic particles were analysed using laser-direct infrared-spectroscopy (LDIR). Microplastic number concentrations in the sediments of the distal lobe are significantly higher than in the canyon, indicating that the Congo Canyon system is a highly efficient conduit for microplastic transport to the deep sea. Moreover, microplastic concentrations of >20,000 particles per kg of dry sediment were recorded in the lobe, which represent some of the highest ever recorded microplastic number concentrations in seafloor sediments.
