Abstract

In order to investigate the behaviour of worm drives, a new dynamic model, composed of two blocks, is established and used to extract numerical results. The tooth deflection of the worm drive, bearings, and wheels inertias are taken into consideration. Newmark solving method is applied to solve motion equations. The state of contact of teeth is what enables these signals to manifest themselves. Modal analysis is developed to investigate the different natural modes of the model. Furthermore, modal energetic analysis is used to understand the distribution of strain and kinetic energies. It is also applied to classify natural models into “teeth modes” and “bearing modes”. These two modes constitute two different frequency bands. The dynamic coefficient is measured simultaneously with the gradual increase of the turning speed of the motor. This allows for the evaluation of the overload of the system.

Abstract

The prediction of the behavior of vibration isolators is essential for effective and efficient design of these devices, as well as for accurately characterizing the isolator behavior. In this work, an experimental study was performed to characterize the behavior of metal-mesh isolators. Although these elements' performance is of great interest because of their usage in several applications, their characterization is complex due to their nonlinear nature, among other factors. This study's aim was to obtain the quasi-static behavior of these isolators, although dynamic tests are required for their complete characterization. These quasi-static tests allowed for the highlighting of some characteristics in a simpler and faster manner and also provided a starting point for designing future dynamic tests. The quasi-static tests performed resulted in the calculation of the hysteresis cycle under different operating conditions and manufacturing parameters. The study of different insulator characteristics, such as the energy dissipation coefficient and stiffness, led to interesting conclusions about the isolator performance. From the results, it was observed that the relative density affected most the nonlinear behavior of the insulator. Moreover, to correctly characterize their behavior, not only the Coulomb's damping but also the viscous damping had to be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Worm gear sets are used in many applications of the transmission field. These mechanisms have interesting advantages. Despite this, its modelization is still challenging. This is due to its complex geometry. The goal behind this is to have an accurate model that allows improvement of the design of worm gear sets. Purpose: In this context, the paper presents a new mathematical model of a worm gear drive under rotational external excitations. Methods: Dynamic model is defined by fourteen degrees of freedom describing all rotations and translations of worm gear set, AQ1 bearings, a motor and a receiver connected together. First, equations of motion are developed to describe the dynamic behavior. Lagrange formula is, thus, employed. Elastic deformations of meshed teeth are considered. The normal load associated with the meshing is established as function of the model degrees of freedom through the elastic deflection. Second, a numerical simulation is carried out. Newmark Beta method is used to solve equations. Results: Numerical results are presented to discuss the model accuracy. The impact of the variation of friction coefficient and the stiffness of the worm gear is finally studied to discuss the consistency of the new formulation developed through this work. Abstract

Background Whether there are lifetime points of greater sensitivity to the deleterious effects of alcohol intake on the breasts remains inconclusive. Objective To compare the influence of distinctive trajectories of alcohol consumption throughout a woman's life on development of breast cancer (BC). Methods 1278 confirmed invasive BC cases and matched (by age and residence) controls from the Epi-GEICAM study (Spain) were used. The novel group-based trajectory modelling was used to identify different alcohol consumption trajectories throughout women's lifetime. Results Four alcohol trajectories were identified. The first comprised women (45%) with low alcohol consumption (<5 g/day) throughout their life. The second included those (33%) who gradually moved from a low alcohol consumption in adolescence to a moderate in adulthood (5 to <15 g/day), never having a high consumption; and oppositely, women in the third trajectory (16%) moved from moderate consumption in adolescence, to a lower consumption in adulthood. Women in the fourth (6%) moved from a moderate alcohol consumption in adolescence to the highest consumption in adulthood (>= 15 g/day), never having a low alcohol consumption. Comparing with the first trajectory, the fourth doubled BC risk (OR 2.19; 95% CI 1.27, 3.77), followed by the third (OR 1.44; 0.96, 2.16) and ultimately by the second trajectory (OR 1.17; 0.86, 1.58). The magnitude of BC risk was greater in postmenopausal women, especially in those with underweight or normal weight. When alcohol consumption was independently examined at each life stage, >= 15 g/day of alcohol consumption in adolescence was strongly associated with BC risk followed by consumption in adulthood. Conclusions The greater the alcohol consumption accumulated throughout life, the greater the risk of BC, especially in postmenopausal women. Alcohol consumption during adolescence may particularly influence BC risk.

Abstract

Tessellated cartilage is a distinctive composite tissue forming the bulk of the skeleton of cartilaginous fishes (e.g. sharks and rays), built from unmineralized cartilage covered at the surface by a thin layer of mineralized tiles called tesserae. The finescale structure and composition of elasmobranch tessellated cartilage has largely been investigated with electron microscopy, micro-computed tomography and histology, but many aspects of tissue structure and composition remain uncharacterized. In our study, we demonstrate that the tessellated cartilage of a stingray exhibits a strong and diverse autofluorescence, a native property of the tissue which can be harnessed as an effective label-free imaging technique. The autofluorescence signal was excited using a broad range of wavelengths in confocal and light sheet microscopy, comparing several sample preparations (fresh; demineralized and paraffin-embedded; non-demineralized and plastic-embedded) and imaging the tissue at different scales. Autofluorescence varied with sample preparation with the signal in both plastic- and paraffin-embedded samples strong enough to allow visualization of finescale (=¿1 µm) cellular and matrix structures, such as cell nuclei and current and former mineralization fronts, identifiable by globular mineralized tissue. A defined pericellular matrix (PCM) surrounding chondrocytes was also discernible, described here for the first time in elasmobranchs. The presence of a PCM suggests similarities with mammalian cartilage regarding how chondrocytes interact with their environment, the PCM in mammals acting as a transducer for biomechanical and biochemical signals. A posterior analysis of hyperspectral images by an MCR-ALS unmixing algorithm allowed identification of several distinct fluorescence signatures associated to specific regions in the tissue. Abstract

A copper smelter generates solutions containing H2SO4 (220 ± 10 g/L), non-metals (3.4 ± 0.2 g/L As) and metals (0.5 ± 0.1 g/L Zn, 0.13 ± 0.01 g/L Fe and 0.11 ± 0.01 g/L Cd) that are treated with lime as disposal option. In order to promote circularity, the recovery of H2SO4 by diffusion dialysis (DD) was evaluated with a lab-stack unit containing Anion Exchange Membranes (Neosepta-AFX) that allow the transport of HSO4- and H+, while rejecting metallic species in cationic form. Initially, dialysis coefficients were determined with cycling type experiments, which showed the possibility to purify H2SO4, but As was also transported. Then, dynamic experiments were carried out to study the effect of different variables, such as operational ones (acid and water flow rates) and As speciation (As(V) or As(III)). At the optimum operating conditions (water and acid flow rates of 0.86 L/m2h), Neosepta-AFX proved to allow the transport of H2SO4 (67 ± 2 % of acid was recovered, 146 ± 12 g/L) and rejected the metallic impurities (>85 %) effectively. Nevertheless, As permeated across the membrane (1.26 g/L in the recovered acid) due to its presence as neutral species (H3AsO4/ H3AsO3).
