Charlotte Charke, born to the famous actor and playwright Colley Cibber in 1713, has become famous for masculine disguises and holding certain jobs restricted for men only. Charke's autobiography 'Narrative' reveals that she spent almost a decade working for several theater companies trying to make a name for herself most of the times in the disguise of Mr. Charles Brown. After being unsuccessful there, she tried a career as a writer and novelist. This also did not paid off and she died a lonely death in 1760.
