Abstract

Most maternal-fetal medicine specialists perform Down syndrome screening, according to a survey of 543 specialists. Most offer second-trimester screening and about half offer first-trimester screening. Amniocentesis was the most common prenatal test, but many specialists also used blood tests and ultrasound scans.

Abstract

Measuring the number of lamellar bodies in amniotic fluid samples can be used to estimate the maturity of a fetus's lungs if the mother has diabetes, according to a study of 90 pregnant women. Lamellar bodies are substances in the lungs that are excreted into amniotic fluid. They can be easily measured in an automated cell counter using small amounts of amniotic fluid. If the fetal lungs are mature, the count will be at least 37,000 per microliter.
