To the families of geometric measures of convex bodies (the area measures of Aleksandrov-Fenchel-Jessen, the curvature measures of Federer, and the recently discovered dual curvature measures) a new family is added. The new family of geometric measures, called chord measures, arises from the study of integral geometric invariants of convex bodies. The Minkowski problems for the new measures and their logarithmic variants are proposed and attacked. When the given data is sufficiently regular, these problems are a new type of fully nonlinear partial differential equations involving dual quermassintegrals of functions. Major cases of these Minkowski problems are solved without regularity assumptions.

Deep wide spectral line surveys with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will expand the cosmic frontiers of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in galaxies. However, at cosmologically significant redshifts ($z \gtrsim 0.5$), detections will typically be spatially unresolved and limited to the highest mass systems. Gravitational lensing could potentially alleviate these limitations, enabling lower mass systems to be studied at higher redshift and spatially resolved dynamical studies of some HI discs. Additionally, lensed HI systems would select foreground dark matter haloes using a different, more extended baryonic tracer compared to other lens surveys. This may result in a wider selected range of foreground dark matter halo properties, such as the concentration parameter. This paper uses the distortion of the observed HI mass function (HIMF) produced by strong gravitational lensing to find a flux density criterion for selecting lensed HI sources in future SKA-Mid spectral line surveys. This selection approach could yield lensed HI source densities in the range of $\sim 0.1$--$10$ galaxies per square degree out to a redshift of $z \simeq 3$ covered by SKA-MID Band 1. Although the sample sizes are modest, even with the proposed SKA-Mid surveys, the selection approach is straightforward and should have a 50% efficiency without any additional information, such as low-impact-factor or lower-redshift massive galaxies. The efficiency of selecting high-redshift, neutral-hydrogen-rich, lensed galaxies should then be greatly enhanced by using SKA-MID data in concert with the Vera C. A longstanding question in the dual Brunn-Minkowski theory is what are the dual analogues of Federer's curvature measures for convex bodies. The answer to this is provided. This leads naturally to dual versions of Minkowski-type problems, which answer the question of what are necessary and sufficient conditions for a Borel measure to be a dual curvature measure of a convex body. Sufficient conditions, involving measure concentration, are established for the existence of solutions to these problems.

In analogy with the classical Minkowski problem, necessary and sufficient conditions are given to assure that a given measure on the unit sphere is the cone-volume measure of the unit ball of a finite dimensional Banach space.

While conventional Transformers generally operate on sequence data, they can be used in conjunction with structure models, typically SE(3)-invariant or equivariant graph neural networks (GNNs), for 3D applications such as protein structure modelling. These hybrids typically involve either (1) preprocessing/tokenizing structural features as input for Transformers or (2) taking Transformer embeddings and processing them within a structural representation. However, there is evidence that Transformers can learn to process structural information on their own, such as the AlphaFold3 structural diffusion model. In this work we show that Transformers can function independently as structure models when passed linear embeddings of coordinates. We first provide a theoretical explanation for how Transformers can learn to filter attention as a 3D Gaussian with learned variance. We then validate this theory using both simulated 3D points and in the context of masked token prediction for proteins. Finally, we show that pre-training protein Transformer encoders with structure improves performance on a downstream task, yielding better performance than custom structural models. Together, this work provides a basis for using standard Transformers as hybrid structure-language models.

Many active galaxies harbor powerful relativistic jets, however, the detailed mechanisms of their formation and acceleration remain poorly understood. To investigate the area of jet acceleration and collimation with the highest available angular resolution, we study the innermost region of the bipolar jet in the nearby low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) galaxy NGC 1052. We combined observations of NGC 1052 taken with VLBA, GMVA, and EHT over one week in the spring of 2017. For the first time, NGC 1052 was detected with the EHT, providing a size of the central region in-between both jet bases of 250 RS (Schwarzschild radii) perpendicular to the jet axes. This size estimate supports previous studies of the jets expansion profile which suggest two breaks of the profile at around 300 RS and 10000 RS distances to the core. Furthermore, we estimated the magnetic field to be 1.25 Gauss at a distance of 22 {\mu}as from the central engine by fitting a synchrotron-self absorption spectrum to the innermost emission feature, which shows a spectral turn-over at about 130 GHz. Assuming a purely poloidal magnetic field, this implies an upper limit on the magnetic field strength at the event horizon of 26000 Gauss, which is consistent with previous measurements. The complex, low-brightness, double-sided jet structure in NGC 1052 makes it a challenge to detect the source at millimeter (mm) wavelengths. However, our first EHT observations have demonstrated that detection is possible up to at least 230 GHz. This study offers a glimpse through the dense surrounding torus and into the innermost central region, where the jets are formed. The 2017 observing campaign of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) delivered the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images at the observing frequency of 230 GHz, leading to a number of unique studies on black holes and relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN). In total, eighteen sources were observed: the main science targets, Sgr A* and M87 along with various calibrators. We investigated the morphology of the sixteen AGN in the EHT 2017 data set, focusing on the properties of the VLBI cores: size, flux density, and brightness temperature. We studied their dependence on the observing frequency in order to compare it with the Blandford-K\"onigl (BK) jet model. We modeled the source structure of seven AGN in the EHT 2017 data set using linearly polarized circular Gaussian components and collected results for the other nine AGN from dedicated EHT publications, complemented by lower frequency data in the 2-86 GHz range. Then, we studied the dependences of the VLBI core flux density, size, and brightness temperature on the frequency measured in the AGN host frame. We compared the observations with the BK jet model and estimated the magnetic field strength dependence on the distance from the central black hole. Our results indicate a deviation from the standard BK model, particularly in the decrease of the brightness temperature with the observing frequency. Either bulk acceleration of the jet material, energy transfer from the magnetic field to the particles, or both are required to explain the observations.

We present the first widefield extragalactic continuum catalogue with the MeerKAT S-band (2.5 GHz), of the radio-selected DEEP2 field. The combined image over the S1 (1.96 - 2.84 GHz) and S4 (2.62 - 3.50 GHz) sub-bands has an angular resolution of 6.8''$\times$3.6'' (4.0''$\times$2.4'') at a robust weighting of $R = 0.3$ ($R=-0.5$) and a sensitivity of 4.7 (7.5) $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ with an on-source integration time of 70 minutes and a minimum of 52 of the 64 antennas, for respective observations. We present the differential source counts for this field, as well as a morphological comparison of resolved sources between S-band and archival MeerKAT L-band images. We find consistent source counts with the literature and provide spectral indices fitted over a combined frequency range of 1.8 GHz. These observations provide an important first demonstration of the capabilities of MeerKAT S-band imaging with relatively short integration times, as well as a comparison with existing S-band surveys, highlighting the rich scientific potential with future MeerKAT S-band surveys., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 7 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The success of all students in schools, including students with learning differences, is contingent on how schools operationalize universally designed instruction, positive behavior support, and data-based decision-making for individualized and group-level interventions. When schools have fully functional multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) that center equity and focus necessary attention on academic conditions, student behavior, and social-emotional learning conditions, students are more likely to receive the instruction and interventions they need. Further, there is evidence of improvements in student outcomes, particularly those related to behavior, when MTSS is implemented effectively. To address the need for effective MTSS implementation, WestEd engaged in a research and technical assistance partnership in which WestEd subject matter experts provided guidance on designing and implementing effective MTSS. WestEd researchers simultaneously studied the short-, mid-, and long-term effects of these efforts on student outcomes. This interim report provides initial analyses of student-level impacts in one of the two school districts involved in this project.

Giant radio galaxies (GRGs), a minority among the extended-jetted population, form in a wide range of jet and environmental configurations, complicating the identification of the growth factors that facilitate their attainment of megaparsec scales. This study aims to numerically investigate the hypothesized formation mechanisms of GRGs extending $\gtrsim 1$ Mpc to assess their general applicability. We employ triaxial ambient medium settings to generate varying levels of jet frustration and simulate jets with low and high power from different locations in the environment, formulating five representations. The emergence of distinct giant phases in all five simulated scenarios suggests that GRGs may be more common than previously believed, a prediction to be verified with contemporary radio telescopes. We find that different combinations of jet morphology, power, and the evolutionary age of the formed structure hold the potential to elucidate different formation scenarios. The simulated lobes are overpressured, prompting further investigation into pressure profiles when jet activity ceases, potentially distinguishing between relic and active GRGs. We observed a potential phase transition in giant radio galaxies, marked by differences in lobe expansion speed and pressure variations compared to their smaller evolutionary phases. This suggests the need for further investigation across a broader parameter space to determine if GRGs fundamentally differ from smaller RGs. Axial ratio analysis reveals self-similar expansion in rapidly propagating jets, with notable deviations when the jet forms wider lobes. Overall, this study emphasizes that multiple growth factors at work can better elucidate the current-day population of GRGs, including scenarios e.g., growth of GRGs in dense environments, GRGs of several megaparsecs, GRG development in low-powered jets, and the formation of X-shaped GRGs., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A journal (15 Figs, 2 Tables)

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. The MIGHTEE survey utilises the South African MeerKAT radio telescope to observe four extragalactic deep fields, with the aim of advancing our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies across cosmic time. MIGHTEE's frequency coverage encompasses the $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{I}$ line to a redshift of z $\simeq$ 0.58, and OH megamasers to z $\simeq$ 0.9. We present the MIGHTEE-$\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{I}$ imaging products for the COSMOS field, using a total of 94.2 h on-target and a close-packed mosaic of 15 individual pointings. The spectral imaging covers two broad, relatively interference-free regions (960-1150 and 1290-1520~MHz) within MeerKAT's L-band, with up to 26 kHz spectral resolution (5.5 km s$^{-1}$ at $z$ = 0). The median noise in the highest spectral resolution data is 74 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$, corresponding to a 5$\sigma$ $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{I}$ mass limit of 10$^{8.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ for a 300 km s$^{-1}$ line at $z$ = 0.07. The mosaics cover $>$4 deg$^{2}$, provided at multiple angular resolution / sensitivity pairings, with an angular resolution for $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{I}$ at $z$ = 0 of 12$''$. We describe the spectral line processing workflow that will be the basis for future MIGHTEE-$\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{I}$ products, and validation of, and some early results from, the spectral imaging of the COSMOS field. We find no evidence for line emission at the position of the $z$ = 0.376 \HI~line reported from the CHILES survey at a $>$94 per cent confidence level, placing a 3$\sigma$ upper limit of 8.1 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ M$_{\odot}$ on $M_{\mathrm{HI}}$ for this galaxy. Global expansion of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) will see the strategic addition of antennas at new geographical locations, transforming the sensitivity and imaging fidelity of the $\lambda \sim 1$\,mm EHT array. A possible South African EHT station would leverage a strong geographical advantage, local infrastructure, and radio astronomy expertise, and have strong synergies with the Africa Millimetre Telescope in Namibia. We assessed three South African candidate millimetre sites using climatological simulations and antenna sensitivity estimates, and found at least two promising sites. These sites are comparable to some existing EHT stations during the typical April EHT observing window and outperform them during most of the year, especially the southern hemisphere winter. The results suggest that a strategically placed South African EHT station will have a sizable, positive impact on next-generation EHT objectives and the resulting black hole imaging science., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. The Square Kilometre Array mid-frequency array will enable high-redshift detections of neutral hydrogen (HI) emission in galaxies, providing important constraints on the evolution of cold gas in galaxies over cosmic time. Strong gravitational lensing will push back the HI emission frontier towards cosmic noon ($z\sim2$), as has been done for all prominent spectral lines in the interstellar medium of galaxies. Chakraborty & Roy (2023, MNRAS, 519, 4074) report a $z=1.3$ HI emission detection towards the well-modelled, galaxy-scale gravitational lens, SDSS J0826+5630. We carry out HI source modelling of the system and find that their claimed HI magnification, $\mu_{\rm HI} = 29 \pm 6$, requires an HI disk radius of $\lesssim 1.5$ kpc, which implies an implausible mean HI surface mass density in excess of $\Sigma_{\rm HI} > 2000$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$. This is several orders of magnitude above the highest measured peak values $(\Sigma_{\rm HI} \sim 10 \, {\rm M}_\odot\,{\rm pc}^{-2})$, above which HI is converted into molecular hydrogen. Our re-analysis requires this to be the highest HI mass galaxy known (M$_{\rm HI}~\sim 10^{11}$M$_\odot$), as well as strongly lensed, the latter having a typical probability of order 1 in 10$^{3-4}$. Generative models have the potential to accelerate key steps in the discovery of novel molecular therapeutics and materials. Diffusion models have recently emerged as a powerful approach, excelling at unconditional sample generation and, with data-driven guidance, conditional generation within their training domain. Reliably sampling from high-value regions beyond the training data, however, remains an open challenge -- with current methods predominantly focusing on modifying the diffusion process itself. In this paper, we develop context-guided diffusion (CGD), a simple plug-and-play method that leverages unlabeled data and smoothness constraints to improve the out-of-distribution generalization of guided diffusion models. Cold gas evolution ties the formation of dark matter halos to the star formation history of the universe. A primary component of cold gas, neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), can be traced by its 21-cm emission line. However, the faintness of this emission typically limits individual detections to low redshifts ($z\lesssim 0.2$). To address this limitation, we investigate the potential of targeting gravitationally lensed systems. Building on our prior galaxy-galaxy simulations, we have developed a ray-tracing code to simulate lensed HI images for known galaxies situated behind the massive Hubble Frontier Field galaxy clusters. Our findings reveal the existence of high HI mass, high HI magnification systems in these cluster lensing scenarios. Through simulations of hundreds of sources, we have identified compelling targets within the redshift range $z\approx 0.7 - 1.5$. The most promising candidate from our simulations is the Great Arc at z=0.725 in Abell~370, which should be detectable by MeerKAT in approximately 50 hours. Importantly, the derived HI mass is predicted to be relatively insensitive to systematic uncertainties in the lensing model, and should be constrained within a factor of $\sim 2.5$ for a 95 per cent confidence interval., Comment: Accepted MNRAS on 8 July 2024

Accurate prediction of antibody structure is a central task in the design and development of monoclonal antibodies, notably to understand both their developability and their binding properties. In this article, we introduce ABodyBuilder3, an improved and scalable antibody structure prediction model based on ImmuneBuilder. We achieve a new state-of-the-art accuracy in the modelling of CDR loops by leveraging language model embeddings, and show how predicted structures can be further improved through careful relaxation strategies. We introduce IgDiff, an antibody variable domain diffusion model based on a general protein backbone diffusion framework which was extended to handle multiple chains. Assessing the designability and novelty of the structures generated with our model, we find that IgDiff produces highly designable antibodies that can contain novel binding regions. The backbone dihedral angles of sampled structures show good agreement with a reference antibody distribution. We verify these designed antibodies experimentally and find that all express with high yield. Finally, we compare our model with a state-of-the-art generative backbone diffusion model on a range of antibody design tasks, such as the design of the complementarity determining regions or the pairing of a light chain to an existing heavy chain, and show improved properties and designability., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, model weights and samples available at https://zenodo.org/records/11184374

The design and optimization of antibodies requires an intricate balance across multiple properties. Protein inverse folding models, capable of generating diverse sequences folding into the same structure, are promising tools for maintaining structural integrity during antibody design. Here, we present AntiFold, an antibody-specific inverse folding model, fine-tuned from ESM-IF1 on solved and predicted antibody structures. AntiFold outperforms existing inverse folding tools on sequence recovery across complementarity-determining regions, with designed sequences showing high structural similarity to their solved counterpart. It additionally achieves stronger correlations when predicting antibody-antigen binding affinity in a zero-shot manner, while performance is augmented further when including antigen information. AntiFold assigns low probabilities to mutations that disrupt antigen binding, synergizing with protein language model residue probabilities, and demonstrates promise for guiding antibody optimization while retaining structure-related properties. The nearby elliptical galaxy M87 contains one of the only two supermassive black holes whose emission surrounding the event horizon has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In 2018, more than two dozen multi-wavelength (MWL) facilities (from radio to gamma-ray energies) took part in the second M87 EHT campaign. The goal of this extensive MWL campaign was to better understand the physics of the accreting black hole M87*, the relationship between the inflow and inner jets, and the high-energy particle acceleration. Understanding the complex astrophysics is also a necessary first step towards performing further tests of general relativity. The MWL campaign took place in April 2018, overlapping with the EHT M87* observations. We present a new, contemporaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays, as well as details of the individual observations and light curves. We also conduct phenomenological modelling to investigate the basic source properties. We present the first VHE gamma-ray flare from M87 detected since 2010. The flux above 350 GeV has more than doubled within a period of about 36 hours. We find that the X-ray flux is enhanced by about a factor of two compared to 2017, while the radio and millimetre core fluxes are consistent between 2017 and 2018. We detect evidence for a monotonically increasing jet position angle that corresponds to variations in the bright spot of the EHT image. Our results show the value of continued MWL monitoring together with precision imaging for addressing the origins of high-energy particle acceleration. While we cannot currently pinpoint the precise location where such acceleration takes place, the new VHE gamma-ray flare already presents a challenge to simple one-zone leptonic emission model approaches, and emphasises the need for combined image and spectral modelling., Comment: 46 pages, 23 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics on August. 29, 2024

Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system that can identify and neutralise a wide variety of antigens with high specificity and affinity, and constitute the most successful class of biotherapeutics. With the advent of next-generation sequencing, billions of antibody sequences have been collected in recent years, though their application in the design of better therapeutics has been constrained by the sheer volume and complexity of the data. To address this challenge, we present IgBert and IgT5, the best performing antibody-specific language models developed to date which can consistently handle both paired and unpaired variable region sequences as input. These models are trained comprehensively using the more than two billion unpaired sequences and two million paired sequences of light and heavy chains present in the Observed Antibody Space dataset. We show that our models outperform existing antibody and protein language models on a diverse range of design and regression tasks relevant to antibody engineering. The S-band Polarisation All Sky Survey (SPASS/ATCA) rotation measure (RM) catalogue is the largest broadband RM catalogue to date, increasing the RM density in the sparse southern sky. Through analysis of this catalogue, we report a latitude dependency of the Faraday complexity of polarised sources in this catalogue within 10$^\circ$ of the Galactic plane towards the inner Galaxy. In this study, we aim to investigate this trend with follow-up observations using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We observe 95 polarised sources from the SPASS/ATCA RM catalogue at 1.1 - 3.1 GHz with ATCA's 6 km configuration. We present Stokes QU fitting results and a comparative analysis with the SPASS/ATCA catalogue. We find an overall decrease in complexity in these sources with the higher angular resolution observations, with a complexity fraction of 42\%, establishing that the majority of the complexity in the SPASS/ATCA sample is due to the mixing-in of diffuse Galactic emission at scales $\theta > 2.8'$. Furthermore, we find a correlation between our observed small-scale complexity $\theta < 2.8'$ and the Galactic spiral arms, which we interpret to be due to Galactic turbulence or small-scale polarised emission. These results emphasise the importance of considering the maximum angular scale to which the observations are sensitive in the classification of Faraday complexity; the effect of which can be more carefully investigated with SKA-precursor and pathfinder arrays (e.g. MeerKAT and ASKAP)., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

Deep radio surveys of extragalactic legacy fields trace a large range of spatial and brightness temperature sensitivity scales, and therefore have differing biases to radio-emitting physical components within galaxies. This is particularly true of radio surveys performed at less than 1 arcsec angular resolutions, and so robust comparisons are necessary to better understand the biases present in each survey. We present a multi-resolution and multi-wavelength analysis of the sources detected in a new Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) survey of the CANDELS GOODS-North field. For the 24 VLBA-selected sources described in Paper I, we augment the VLBA data with EVN data, ~0.1-1 arcsecond angular resolution data provided by VLA and e-MERLIN. This sample includes new AGN detected in this field, thanks to a new source extraction technique that adopts priors from ancillary multi-wavelength data. The high brightness temperatures of these sources (Tb > 10^6 K) confirm AGN cores, that would often be missed or ambiguous in lower-resolution radio data of the same sources. Furthermore, only 15 sources are identified as 'radiative' AGN based on available X-ray and infrared constraints. By combining VLA and VLBA measurements, we find evidence that the majority of the extended radio emission is also AGN dominated, with only 3 sources with evidence for extended potentially star-formation dominated radio emission. We demonstrate the importance of wide-field multi-resolution (arcsecond-milliarcsecond) coverage of the faint radio source population, for a complete picture of the multi-scale processes within these galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

3C84 is a nearby radio source with a complex total intensity structure, showing linear polarisation and spectral patterns. A detailed investigation of the central engine region necessitates the use of VLBI above the hitherto available maximum frequency of 86GHz. Using ultrahigh resolution VLBI observations at the highest available frequency of 228GHz, we aim to directly detect compact structures and understand the physical conditions in the compact region of 3C84. We used EHT 228GHz observations and, given the limited (u,v)-coverage, applied geometric model fitting to the data. We also employed quasi-simultaneously observed, multi-frequency VLBI data for the source in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the core structure. We report the detection of a highly ordered, strong magnetic field around the central, SMBH of 3C84. The brightness temperature analysis suggests that the system is in equipartition. We determined a turnover frequency of $\nu_m=(113\pm4)$GHz, a corresponding synchrotron self-absorbed magnetic field of $B_{SSA}=(2.9\pm1.6)$G, and an equipartition magnetic field of $B_{eq}=(5.2\pm0.6)$G. Three components are resolved with the highest fractional polarisation detected for this object ($m_\textrm{net}=(17.0\pm3.9)$%). The positions of the components are compatible with those seen in low-frequency VLBI observations since 2017-2018. We report a steeply negative slope of the spectrum at 228GHz. We used these findings to test models of jet formation, propagation, and Faraday rotation in 3C84. The findings of our investigation into different flow geometries and black hole spins support an advection-dominated accretion flow in a magnetically arrested state around a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole as a model of the jet-launching system in the core of 3C84. The past decade has seen significant advances in wide-field cm-wave very long baseline interferometry (VLBI), which is timely given the wide-area, synoptic survey-driven strategy of major facilities across the electromagnetic spectrum. While wide-field VLBI poses significant post-processing challenges that can severely curtail its potential scientific yield, many developments in the km-scale connected-element interferometer sphere are directly applicable to addressing these. Here we present the design, processing, data products, and source counts from a deep (11 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$), quasi-uniform sensitivity, contiguous wide-field (160 arcmin$^2$) 1.6 GHz VLBI survey of the CANDELS GOODS-North field. This is one of the best-studied extragalactic fields at milli-arcsecond resolution and, therefore, is well-suited as a comparative study for our Tera-pixel VLBI image. The derived VLBI source counts show consistency with those measured in the COSMOS field, which broadly traces the AGN population detected in arcsecond-scale radio surveys. However, there is a distinctive flattening in the $ S_{\rm 1.4GHz}\sim$100-500 $\mu$Jy flux density range, which suggests a transition in the population of compact faint radio sources, qualitatively consistent with the excess source counts at 15 GHz that is argued to be an unmodelled population of radio cores. This survey approach will assist in deriving robust VLBI source counts and broadening the discovery space for future wide-field VLBI surveys, including VLBI with the Square Kilometre Array, which will include new large field-of-view antennas on the African continent at $\gtrsim$1000~km baselines. There has been a recent resurgence in hydroxyl (OH) megamaser research driven by Square Kilometre Array (SKA) precursor/pathfinder telescopes. This will continue in the lead-up to the SKA mid-frequency array, which will greatly expand our view of OH megamasers and their cosmic evolution over $\gtrsim80$ per cent of the age of the universe. This is expected to yield large scientific returns as OH megamasers trace galaxy mergers, extreme star formation, high molecular gas densities, and potentially binary/dual supermassive black hole systems. In this paper, we predict the distortion to the OH luminosity function that a magnification bias will inflict, and in turn, predict the distortion on the OH megamaser number counts as a function of redshift. We identify spectral flux density thresholds that will enable efficient lensed OH megamaser selection in large spectral line surveys with MeerKAT and SKA. The surface density of lensed galaxies that could be discovered in this way is a strong function of the redshift evolution of the OH megamaser luminosity function, with predictions as high as $\sim$1 lensed OH source per square degree at high redshifts ($z \gtrsim 1$) for anticipated SKA spectral line survey designs. This could enable efficient selection of some of the most highly-obscured galaxies in the universe. This high-redshift selection efficiency, in combination with the large survey speed of the SKA at $\lesssim$1 GHz frequencies and the high magnifications possible with compact OH emission regions ($\mu_{\rm OH} \gg 10$), will enable a transformational view of OH in the universe., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables; Accepted in MNRAS

We present the discovery of the most distant OH megamaser to be observed in the main lines, using data from the MeerKAT International Giga-Hertz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey. At a newly measured redshift of $z = 0.7092$, the system has strong emission in both the 1665MHz ($L \approx 2500$ L$_{\odot}$) and 1667 MHz ($L \approx 4.5\times10^4$ L$_{\odot}$) transitions, with both narrow and broad components. We interpret the broad line as a high-velocity-dispersion component of the 1667 MHz transition, with velocity $v \sim 330$km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the systemic velocity. The host galaxy has a stellar mass of $M_{\star} = 2.95 \times 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ and a star-formation rate of SFR = 371 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, placing it $\sim 1.5$dex above the main sequence for star-forming galaxies at this redshift, and can be classified as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy. Alongside the optical imaging data, which exhibits evidence for a tidal tail, this suggests that the OH megamaser arises from a system that is currently undergoing a merger, which is stimulating star formation and providing the necessary conditions for pumping the OH molecule to saturation. The OHM is likely to be lensed, with a magnification factor of $\sim 2.5$, and perhaps more if the maser emitting region is compact and suitably offset relative to the centroid of its host galaxy's optical light.
