The retail (special lines) industry, which is comprised of a wide variety of retail outlets, performed well during the 1999 Christmas holiday selling season. The US economy is still bullish, which is good for the industry, and online retailing has become an important part of the sector. Earnings at most US department store chains were lower in 1999 than many industry analysts expected due to lower sales and the lack of new store openings. Discount stores have gained market share, however, and both segments of the industry are taking advantage of the Internet. These stocks are volatile for the year 2000 and investors should seek out only the most timely.

There has been a sell-off in electric utility stocks in 1999 due to rising interest rates with most at their 52-week lows in the 3rd qtr of the year, and further interest rate rises by the Fed could lower stock prices more. Deregulation of electric utilities is continuing, as are acquisitions and mergers within the industry, and competition among generators is also increasing. However, most investors should look elsewhere, even though total returns for the next three to five years are good.

Merger activity has continued in the electric utility industry in the western US during 1999 and over one-third of the companies in this are involved in combinations, leveraged buyouts, or acquisitions. However, investors who are seeking dividends and income will find some good values in this industry due to lower stock price performance. Rising interest rates have caused this industry to perform poorly in 1999 and income quotations have increased as a result.

The retail (special lines) industry is comprised of a diverse group of store chains which have mixed prospects for the upcoming holiday selling season in 1999, even with the US economy expected to grow. Electronic commerce and the Internet, along with changing customer habits and tastes are also expected to have an effect on the industry. Investors need to be selective when evaluating stocks in this competitive industry.

The leading retail store chains which comprise the retail store industry have mixed prospects for 1999 and the year 2000 with discounters gaining market share and disappointing results for department stores. Many store chains are also launching electronic commerce efforts with Wal-Mart, Federated, and Nordstrom's in the lead. Investors should consider only the most timely stocks and those companies which will benefit the most from electronic commerce.

Many US electric utilities have sought economic opportunities abroad due to rate freezes and reductions, as well as slow sales growth, at home, and have made acquisitions overseas. Nuclear facilities have also become a problem for many utilities as they cannot generate electricity efficiently or economically with rate competition and possible accidents. Investors need to be selective before making commitments with these stocks.

Restructuring activity within the electric utilitiy industry is expected to increase in 1999, and competition, stranded cost collectiion, unbundling, and asset securitization are some of the issues that state and local regulators will have to face. Pending asset deals and environmental concerns are also among the issues that the industry will have to deal with in 1999, also. Investors need to consider stability, capital gains, and dividend yield when evaluating these stocks.

Generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power have been the major functions of electric utilities over the years, but several have decided to leave the generation business due to stranded costs and other factors. Retrenchment and entrance into the gas utility business are other trends of the investor-owned electric utilities in the 1990s. Dividend growth is the main attraction of these stocks for investors in 1998.

Consumer confidence in the US has decreased somewhat during the 3rd qtr of 1998, but interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve Board should keep the economy going and a recession seems unlikely. Success in the retail industry in the 4th qtr of 1998 will depend on execution and the 1998 holiday shopping season, although some retail sectors are mixed. Investors need to focus upon growth companies for their selections.

More moderate consumer confidence and warmer-than-usual weather were the key factors in lower-than-expected same-store sales at many US department stores during the 3rd qtr of 1998, but share advances are expected through the years 2001-2003. Market share for discount stores sich as Family Dollar Stores and Dollar General continue to expand, as well. Investors need to evaluate individual stocks before selection.

Electric utilities in the Middle West can no longer count on recovery of plant investments or a fair rate of return with deregulation and the onset of competition in the industry. All utilities, even those with low cost structures, will face stranded cost problems and this has become an issue in a number of states. These stocks have little investment appeal in 1998 due to their trading range and uncertainties in the industry.
