Decadal thermohaline anomalies carried northward by the North Atlantic Current are an important source of predictability in the North Atlantic region. Here, we investigate whether these thermohaline anomalies influence surface-forced water mass transformation (SFWMT) in the eastern subpolar gyre using the reanalyses EN4.2.2 for the ocean and the ERA5 for the atmosphere. In addition, we follow the propagation of thermohaline anomalies along two paths: in the subpolar North Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea. We use observation-based datasets (HadISST, EN4.2.2, and Ishii) between 1947 and 2021 and apply complex empirical orthogonal functions. Our results show that when a warm anomaly enters the eastern subpolar gyre, more SFWMT occurs in light-density classes (27.0–27.2 kg m−3). In contrast, when a cold anomaly enters the eastern subpolar gyre, more SFWMT occurs in denser classes (27.4–27.5 kg m−3). Following the thermohaline anomalies in both paths, we find alternating warm–salty and cold–fresh subsurface anomalies, repeating throughout the 74-yr-long record with four warm–salty and cold–fresh periods after the 1950s. The cold–fresh anomaly periods happen simultaneously with the Great Salinity Anomaly events. Moreover, the propagation of thermohaline anomalies is faster in the subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) than in the Norwegian Sea, especially for temperature anomalies. These findings might have implications for our understanding of the decadal variability of the lower limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and predictability in the North Atlantic region. Significance Statement: Anomalously warm–salty or cold–fresh water, carried by the North Atlantic Current toward the Arctic, is a source of climate predictability. In this study, we investigate 1) how these ocean anomalies influence the transformation of water masses in the eastern subpolar gyre and 2) their subsequent propagation poleward and northwestward. The key findings reveal that anomalously warm waters entering the eastern subpolar gyre lead to increased transformation in lighter water masses, while cold anomalies affect denser water masses. These anomalies propagate more than 2 times faster toward the Greenland coast (northwestward) than toward the Arctic (poleward). The North Pacific sea surface salinity (SSS) decadal variability (NPSDV) and its potential forcing were evaluated from 25 coupled models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) considering the prospects for decadal climate predictions. The results indicated that the CMIP6 models generally reproduced the spatial patterns of NPSDV. The large standard deviation of the SSS anomaly over the strong current regions, such as the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension (KOE), North Pacific Current (NPC), California Current System (CCS), and Alaskan Coastal Current (ACC), is reflected in the two leading modes of NPSDV: a dipole with out-of-phase loadings in the KOE-NPC versus CCS-ACC and a monopole with positive loading over the KOE-NPC. The order of modes is sensitive to individual models that exhibit discrepancies, especially in temporal phases and power spectra. An autoregressive model of order-1 was used to reconstruct the NPSDV with several forcing terms. The generally weaker influence of forcings in an autoregressive model of order-1 is partly related to the overestimated response time of NPSDV relative to forcings. Most NPSDV variances originate from the persistence of SSS anomalies, but the dominant forcing factors are diverse among models. The model diversity for the NPSDV simulation mainly arises from the influence of the tropical El Niño-Southern Oscillation through teleconnection on the North Pacific Oscillation or Aleutian Low with timescale dependence. The upper ocean salinity in the eastern subpolar North Atlantic undergoes decadal fluctuations. A large fresh anomaly event occurred during 2012–2016. Using the ECCOv4r4 state estimate, we diagnose and compare mechanisms of this low salinity event with those of the 1990s fresh anomaly event. To avoid issues related to the choice of reference salinity values in the freshwater budget, we perform a salt mass content budget analysis of the eastern subpolar North Atlantic. It shows that the recent low salt content anomaly occurs due to the circulation of anomalous salinity by mean currents entering the eastern subpolar basin from its western boundary via the North Atlantic Current. This is in contrast to the early 1990s, when the dominant mechanism governing the low salt content anomaly was the transport of the mean salinity field by anomalous currents. El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) diversity is characterized based on the longitudinal location of maximum sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) and amplitude in the tropical Pacific, as Central Pacific events are typically weaker than Eastern Pacific events. SSTA pattern and intensity undergo low‐frequency modulations, affecting ENSO prediction skill and remote impacts, and resulting in low‐frequency changes in ENSO variance. Yet, how different ENSO types contribute to these decadal variance changes remains unclear. Here, we decompose the low‐frequency changes of ENSO variance into contributions from ENSO diversity categories. We propose a fuzzy clustering of monthly SSTA to allow for non‐binary event category memberships, where each event can belong to different clusters. Our approach identifies two La Niña and three El Niño categories and shows that the major shift of ENSO variance in the mid‐1970s was associated with an increasing likelihood of strong La Niña and extreme El Niño events. On decadal time scales, a zonal SST dipole dominates the tropical Indian Ocean in boreal late summer and fall, called the decadal Indian Ocean dipole (D-IOD). The D-IOD has a spatial pattern different from the traditional interannual IOD, with its eastern pole located off Java, rather than the whole Sumatra–Java coasts as the latter. Here, we show that the D-IOD is generated by both the remote tropical Pacific decadal variability (TPDV) forcing and the decadal modulation of interannual IODs, but with its distinctive spatial pattern and seasonality mainly shaped by the former. In August–September (AS), due to the seasonal strengthening of trade winds, the descending branch of TPDV-induced Walker circulation moves westward into the eastern Indian Ocean relative to June–July, which stimulates equatorial easterly anomalies and oceanic upwelling Kelvin waves, causing subsurface cooling off Java. The subsurface cooling just occurs within the time window of climatological coastal upwelling so that subsurface cold anomalies are brought into the surface by mean upwelling and further transported offshore by mean flows, forming the D-IOD eastern pole. The subsurface cooling is only generated near Java but not Sumatra, because the former is closer to the exit of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF). Weakened ITF during positive TPDV inhibits the growth of subsurface warming off Java prior to the establishment of AS equatorial easterly anomalies, whereas this ITF effect is not observed off Sumatra. Moreover, warming of the D-IOD western pole might be associated with off-equatorial Rossby waves induced by TPDV-related wind stress curls. Significance Statement: The decadal Indian Ocean dipole (D-IOD) is one of the leading decadal modes of the tropical Indian Ocean SST variations. Its formation mechanisms, especially those related to its spatiotemporal characteristics, are not well understood. Based on observations and reanalysis, we show that the tropical Pacific decadal variability (TPDV) mainly accounts for the distinctive spatial pattern and seasonality of the D-IOD via the seasonal migration of the anomalous Walker circulation and ensuing oceanic subsurface dynamics. Our results highlight that the TPDV is an important source of D-IOD's predictability, and it might be beneficial for operational decadal predictions for the tropical Indian Ocean. Seasonal hindcasts have previously been demonstrated to show multi‐decadal variability in skill across the twentieth century in indices describing El‐Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which drives global seasonal predictability. Here, we analyze the skill of predicting ENSO events' magnitude and spatial pattern, in the CSF‐20C coupled seasonal hindcasts in 1901–2010. We find minima in the skill of predicting the first (in 1930–1950) and second (in 1940–1960) principal components of sea‐surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Pacific. This minimum is also present in the spatial correlation of SSTs, in 1930–1960. The skill reduction is explained by lower ENSO magnitude and variance in 1930–1960, as well as decreased SST persistence. The SST skill minima project onto surface winds, leading to worse predictions in coupled hindcasts compared to hindcasts using prescribed SSTs. Questions remain about the offset between the first and second principal components' skill minima, and how the skill minima impact the extra‐tropics. Seasonal forecasting models are tested by running 'reforecasts': comparing a 'forecast' of the past with observations. In this study, we investigate how skilfully reforecasts from a state‐of‐the‐art seasonal forecasting model reproduce observations, for sea‐surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific (where ENSO occurs). We analyze reforecast skill in every Northern Hemisphere winter from 1901 to 2010 and find periods of high skill at the start and end of the century, with reduced skill in 1930–1960. This was likely caused by a reduction in the size of ENSO events, and decreased sea‐surface temperature memory. This reduction in ocean skill leads to lower skill for surface‐level winds. These results are important for understanding whether season‐ahead predictability changes over decades/centuries, and how climate change might impact this predictability. The variability of the shortwave radiative fluxes at the surface and top of atmosphere (TOA) is examined in a pre‐industrial modeling setup using the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) as a possible pacemaker of atmospheric decadal‐scale variability. Within models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project—Phase 6, downwelling shortwave radiation at the surface, the net shortwave fluxes at the surface and TOA, as well as cloud radiative effects show remarkably similar patterns associated with the PDO. Through ensemble simulations designed with a pure PDO pattern in the North Pacific only, we show that the PDO relates to about 20%–40% of the unforced year‐to‐year variability of these shortwave fluxes over the Northern Hemispheric continents. The sea surface temperature imprint on shortwave‐flux variability over land is larger for spatially aggregated time series as compared to smaller areas, due to the blurring effect of small‐scale atmospheric noise. The surface and TOA radiative flux anomalies associated with the PDO index range of [−1.64; 1.64] are estimated to reach up to ±6 Wm−2 for North America, ∓3 Wm−2 for India and ±2 Wm−2 for Europe. We hypothesize that the redistribution of clouds in response to a North Pacific PDO anomaly can impact the South Pacific and North Atlantic SSTs. We use idealized climate model simulations to show that about a third of the year‐to‐year changes in solar radiation over the Northern Hemispheric continents are related to this phenomenon. These changes are more noticeable when looking at large areas rather than small ones, as high frequency smaller scale atmospheric variations can obscure the bigger picture. By keeping the PDO fixed to a constant negative value, implying below average cold sea surface temperatures off the western coast of North America and warmer than average temperatures toward Japan, we show that North America and Europe exhibit a reduction in cloudiness, while clouds increase in India. The same with an opposite sign is true for a positive PDO anomaly. These changes in cloud patterns might further affect SSTs in the South Pacific and North Atlantic oceans. Concurrent with global warming, the Eurasian continent has experienced frequent cold winters in recent decades. Although still debatable, such Eurasian winter cooling, which was particularly pronounced in the late twentieth century, has been attributed to internal climate variability, the process of which remains elusive. By examining multimodel large ensemble simulations, this study explores the potential sources of internal climate variability responsible for the Eurasian winter cooling trend over 1987–2006. Model simulations show a large ensemble spread in the Eurasian winter temperature trend with an ensemble mean close to zero. A comparison of the ensemble members shows that a circulation pattern favorable for the Eurasian cooling is characterized by the anticyclonic and cyclonic enhancements of sea level pressure (SLP) trend in the subarctic and Aleutian regions, respectively. This dipolar SLP trend is closely related to the deep Arctic warming, the change in midlatitude snow cover, and the enhancement of atmospheric convection over the tropical western Pacific. This result suggests that the Eurasian winter cooling is likely associated not only to the changes in mid- to high-latitude conditions but also to the changes in tropical convection. Monitoring the spatio-temporal variations of surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl, a proxy of phytoplankton biomass) greatly benefited from the availability of continuous and global ocean color satellite measurements from 1997 onward. These two decades of satellite observations are however still too short to provide a comprehensive description of Chl variations at decadal to multi-decadal timescales. This paper investigates the ability of a machine learning approach (a non-linear statistical approach based on Support Vector Regression, hereafter SVR) to reconstruct global spatio-temporal Chl variations from selected surface oceanic and atmospheric physical parameters. With a limited training period (13 years), we first demonstrate that Chl variability from a 32- years global physical-biogeochemical simulation can generally be skillfully reproduced with a SVR using the model surface variables as input parameters. We then apply the SVR to reconstruct satellite Chl observations using the physical predictors from the above numerical model and show that the Chl reconstructed by this SVR more accurately reproduces some aspects of observed Chl variability and trends compared to the model simulation. This SVR is able to reproduce the main modes of interannual Chl variations depicted by satellite observations in most regions, including El Niño signature in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. In stark contrast with the trends simulated by the biogeochemical model, it also accurately captures spatial patterns of Chl trends estimated by satellite data, with a Chl increase in most extratropical regions and a Chl decrease in the center of the subtropical gyres, although the amplitude of these trends are underestimated by half. Results from our SVR reconstruction over the entire period (1979--2010) also suggest that the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation drives a significant part of decadal Chl variations in both the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. Overall, this study demonstrates that non-linear statistical reconstructions can be complementary tools to in situ and satellite observations as well as conventional physical-biogeochemical numerical simulations to reconstruct and investigate Chl decadal variability. The ice streams flowing into the Amundsen Sea, West Antarctica, are losing mass due to changes in oceanic basal melting of their floating ice shelves. Rapid ice‐shelf melting is sustained by the delivery of warm Circumpolar Deep Water to the ice‐shelf cavities, which is first supplied to the continental shelf by an undercurrent that flows eastward along the shelf break. Temporal variability of this undercurrent controls ice‐shelf basal melt variability. Recent work shows that on decadal timescales the undercurrent variability opposes surface wind variability. Using a regional model, we show that undercurrent variability is induced by sea‐ice freshwater fluxes, particularly those north of the shelf break, which affect the cross‐shelf break density gradient. This sea‐ice variability is linked to tropical Pacific variability impacting atmospheric conditions over the Amundsen Sea. Ice‐shelf melting also feeds back onto the undercurrent by affecting the on‐shelf density, thereby influencing shelf‐break density gradient anomalies. Once these glaciers reach the coast, they extend out onto the ocean surface, forming ice shelves. In the Amundsen Sea, a deep ocean current is responsible for delivering warm water from the deep ocean to the ice shelves. We present model results that show that this deep current varies on decadal timescales as a consequence of systematic sea‐ice melt and formation patterns. A faster current drives more rapid ice shelf melting which, via a feedback process, further accelerates the current. Climate variability originating in the tropical Pacific Ocean is responsible for the variability in the sea‐ice, and is therefore also responsible for the effects on melting of the ice shelves. Understanding the sea level variability of the Bohai, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea (BYECS) is crucial for the socio-cultural and natural ecosystems of the coastal regions. In this study, based on satellite altimetry data, selected time range from 1993 to 2020, using the cyclostationary empirical orthogonal function (CSEOF) analysis method distinguishes the primary sea level variability modes. The analysis encompasses the seasonal signal, trend, and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) associated mode of sea level anomaly. The amplitude of the annual cycle demonstrates a non-stationary signal, fluctuating between-15% and 15% from the average. Monsoons, atmospheric forcing, ocean circulation, winddriven Ekman transport, and the Kuroshio emerge as the primary factors influencing BYECS variability on seasonal scales. The satellite altimetry sea level exhibits an average trend within the range of 3-4 mm/year, while the steric sea level trend is generally smaller, falling within the range of 0-2 mm/year. Throughout the entire period, the contribution of steric sea level to the mean sea level trend consistently remains below 25%. Furthermore, BYECS sea level variations have a sensitive response to strong El Niño years, with a clear regionalization of the response, which is related to the intricate atmospheric circulation and local wind pressures, as well as the influence of ocean circulation. In conclusion, we gained a more comprehensive understanding of sea level variability in the BYECS, especially the annual cycle of sea level amplitude and the response of ENSO. Sea surface temperature (SST) variability on decadal timescales has been associated with global and regional climate variability and impacts. The mechanisms that drive decadal SST variability, however, remain highly uncertain. Many previous studies have examined the role of atmospheric variability in driving decadal SST variations. Here we assess the strength of oceanic forcing in driving decadal SST variability in observations and state‐of‐the‐art climate models by analyzing the relationship between surface heat flux and SST. We find a largely similar pattern of decadal oceanic forcing across all ocean basins, characterized by oceanic forcing about twice the strength of the atmospheric forcing in the mid‐ and high latitude regions, but comparable or weaker than the atmospheric forcing in the subtropics. The decadal oceanic forcing is hypothesized to be associated with the wind‐driven oceanic circulation, which is common across all ocean basins. Accurately predicting the decadal variations in Sahel rainfall has important implications for the lives and economy in the Sahel. Previous studies found that the decadal variations in sea surface temperature (SST) in the Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean, and Pacific contribute to those in Sahel rainfall. This study evaluates the decadal prediction skills of Sahel rainfall from all the available hindcasts contributing to phases 5 and 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5 and CMIP6), in comparison with the related uninitialized simulations. A majority of the prediction systems show high skill with regard to Sahel rainfall. The high skill may be partly attributed to external forcings, which are reflected in good performance of the respective uninitialized simulations. The decadal prediction skills of the key SST drivers and their relationships with the Sahel rainfall are also assessed. Both the hindcasts and the uninitialized simulations generally present high skill for the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) and Mediterranean Sea SST indices and low skill for the Indian Ocean basin mode (IOBM) and interdecadal Pacific variability (IPV) indices. The relationship between the Sahel rainfall and the AMV or Mediterranean Sea SST index is reasonably captured by most prediction systems and their uninitialized simulations, while that between the Sahel rainfall and the IOBM or IPV index is captured by only a few systems and their uninitialized simulations. The high skill of the AMV and Mediterranean Sea SST indices as well as the reasonable representations of their relationships with the Sahel rainfall by both the hindcasts and uninitialized simulations probably plays an important role in predicting the Sahel rainfall successfully. Significance Statement: Predicting Sahel rainfall on the decadal time scale is of great importance. This study provides a thorough evaluation of the decadal prediction skills of Sahel rainfall in the current decadal prediction systems participating in phases 5 and 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5 and CMIP6). A majority of the systems achieve high prediction skill of Sahel rainfall, which probably results from the high prediction skill of some key sea surface temperature (SST) drivers, especially in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea SST, and their relationships with Sahel rainfall. The "Symposium on Decadal Variability of the North Atlantic and its Marine Ecosystems: 2010–2019" took place in Bergen, Norway, from 20 to 22 May 2022. This event, hosted by the Institute of Marine Research, was jointly sponsored by ICES and NAFO and constitutes the fourth in a series of these symposia that started in 1991. The first symposium's aim was to review the hydrobiological variability in the decade of the 1980s, addressing the physical environment, plankton, invertebrates, and fish. Subsequent symposia maintained the classical structure, whilst a new theme session covering social sciences was added to the programme in the 2022 edition. Studies of climate impacts on marine ecosystems and living marine resources, including trends and regime shifts, emerged from increasingly longer ecosystem time series across the North Atlantic and subarctic regions. This symposium collection presents key findings discussed during the symposium. Whilst some progress has been made in advancing our ability to understand new trends and patterns of climate change and variability across physical, plankton, and fish communities, more work is needed to integrate these physical-ecological processes and scales with social science. Abstract El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) diversity is characterized based on the longitudinal location of maximum sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) and amplitude in the tropical Pacific, as Central Pacific events are typically weaker than Eastern Pacific events. SSTA pattern and intensity undergo low‐frequency modulations, affecting ENSO prediction skill and remote impacts, and resulting in low‐frequency changes in ENSO variance. Yet, how different ENSO types contribute to these decadal variance changes remains unclear. Here, we decompose the low‐frequency changes of ENSO variance into contributions from ENSO diversity categories. We propose a fuzzy clustering of monthly SSTA to allow for non‐binary event category memberships, where each event can belong to different clusters. Our approach identifies two La Niña and three El Niño categories and shows that the major shift of ENSO variance in the mid‐1970s was associated with an increasing likelihood of strong La Niña and extreme El Niño events.

The interaction between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the latitudinal shifts of the Gulf Stream sea surface temperature front (GSF) has been the subject of extensive investigations. There are indications of nonstationarity in this interaction, but differences in the methodologies used in previous studies make it difficult to draw consistent conclusions. Furthermore, there is a lack of consensus on the key mechanisms underlying the response of the GSF to the NAO. This study assesses the possible nonstationarity in the NAO–GSF interaction and the mechanisms underlying this interaction during 1950–2020, using reanalysis data. Results show that the NAO and GSF indices covary on the decadal time scale but only during 1972–2018. A secondary peak in the NAO–GSF covariability emerges on multiannual time scales but only during 2005–15. The nonstationarity in the decadal NAO–GSF covariability is also manifested in variations in their lead–lag relationship. Indeed, the NAO tends to lead the GSF shifts by 3 years during 1972–90 and by 2 years during 1990–2018. The response of the GSF to the NAO at the decadal time scale can be interpreted as the joint effect of the fast response of wind-driven oceanic circulation, the response of deep oceanic circulation, and the propagation of Rossby waves. However, there is evidence of Rossby wave propagation only during 1972–90. Here it is suggested that the nonstationarity of Rossby wave propagation caused the time lag between the NAO and the GSF shifts on the decadal time scale to differ between the two time periods. We investigate how the ocean responds to 10-yr persistent surface heat flux forcing over the subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) associated with the observed winter NAO in three CMIP6-class coupled models. The experiments reveal a broadly consistent ocean response to the imposed NAO forcing. Positive NAO forcing produces anomalously dense water masses in the SPNA, increasing the southward lower (denser) limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) in density coordinates. The southward propagation of the anomalous dense water generates a zonal pressure gradient overlying the models' North Atlantic Current that enhances the upper (lighter) limb of the density-space AMOC, increasing the heat and salt transport into the SPNA. However, the amplitude of the thermohaline process response differs substantially between the models. Intriguingly, the anomalous dense-water formation is not primarily driven directly by the imposed flux anomalies, but rather dominated by changes in isopycnal outcropping area and associated changes in surface water mass transformation (WMT) due to the background surface heat fluxes. The forcing initially alters the outcropping area in dense-water formation regions, but WMT due to the background surface heat fluxes through anomalous outcropping area decisively controls the total dense-water formation response and can explain the intermodel amplitude difference. Our study suggests that coupled models can simulate consistent mechanisms and spatial patterns of decadal SPNA variability when forced with the same anomalous buoyancy fluxes, but the amplitude of the response depends on the background states of the models. While changing lake surface conditions have received significant research scrutiny, changes in subsurface conditions, including stratification and heat content, remain largely unexplored. In this work, we highlight changes in thermal structure, stratification dynamics, and ice characteristics in the Laurentian Great Lakes (Lakes Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario) as simulated between 1979 and 2021. Three-dimensional lake hydrodynamics and ice cover were modeled using the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) coupled with the Los Alamos sea ice model (CICE). Analysis revealed significant increases in surface (0.4°–0.6°C decade−1) and subsurface (0.1°–0.4°C decade−1) temperatures as well as dramatic losses in ice cover (1%–8% decade−1) and ice volume (0–3 km3 decade−1) over the last 40 years. Estimated surface heating rates were strongest during the summer and fall, while subsurface warming was most rapid during the nearly isothermal winter and spring. Intensified (decreased) summer (winter) stratification led to shifts in lake turnover dynamics, with delayed fall turnover dates (2–6 days decade−1) and earlier spring overturn dates (2–9 days decade−1). Modeled surface temperatures (LST), bottom temperatures (LBT), and annual averaged ice cover (AAIC) were used to estimate low-frequency climate signals, which were highly correlated with the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation. Warming trends fit to residual climate signals (LST: 0.1°C decade−1; LBT: 0.03°C decade−1; AAIC: −1% decade−1), calculated by removing low-frequency variability from the raw climate signal, were lower than those fit to associated low-frequency components, suggesting that recent climate change in the Great Lakes may be strongly influenced by natural multidecadal climate variability. The small sample size of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis in the observations prevents us from fully characterizing its spatiotemporal variations. Here we take advantage of a large ensemble of 60-km-resolution atmospheric simulations to address this issue over the northwest Pacific (NWP) during 1951–2010. The variations in annual TC genesis density are explored separately on interannual and decadal time scales. The interannual variability is dominated by two leading modes. One is characterized by a dipole pattern, and its temporal evolution is closely linked to the developing ENSO. The other mode features high loadings in the central part of the basin, with out-of-phase changes near the equator and date line, and tends to occur during ENSO decay years. On decadal time scales, TC genesis density variability is primarily controlled by one mode, which exhibits an east–west dipole pattern with strong signals confined to south of 20°N and is tied to the interdecadal Pacific oscillation–like sea surface temperature anomalies. Further, we investigate the seasonal evolution of the ENSO effect on TC genesis density. The results highlight the distinct impacts of the two types of ENSO (i.e., eastern Pacific vs central Pacific) on TC genesis density in the NWP during a specific season and show the strong seasonal dependency of the TC genesis response to ENSO. Although the results from the observations are not as prominent as those from the simulations because of the small sample size, the high consistency between them demonstrates the fidelity of the model in reproducing TC statistics and variability in the observations. Decadal variability in the ocean is an important indicator of climate system shifts and has considerable influences on marine ecosystems. We investigate the responses of decadal variability over the global ocean regions using nine CMIP6 models (BCC-CSM2-MR, CESM2-WACCM, CMCC-ESM2, EC-Earth3-Veg-LR, FGOAL-f3-L, INM-CM5-0, MIROC6, MPI-ESM1-2-LR, and NorESM2-MM). Our results show that climate models can capture the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability, South Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Atlantic Multidecadal Variability under present-day conditions. The ocean decadal variabilities are becoming weaker and their periods are decreasing, especially under the strong global warming scenario. However, there is a discrepancy between the Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability and the other three modes of climate variability. This might be caused by the nearly unchanged atmospheric forcing in the equatorial region, which is decreasing in the higher latitude regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Seasonal hindcasts have previously been demonstrated to show multi‐decadal variability in skill across the twentieth century in indices describing El‐Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which drives global seasonal predictability. Here, we analyze the skill of predicting ENSO events' magnitude and spatial pattern, in the CSF‐20C coupled seasonal hindcasts in 1901–2010. We find minima in the skill of predicting the first (in 1930–1950) and second (in 1940–1960) principal components of sea‐surface temperature (SST) in the tropical Pacific. This minimum is also present in the spatial correlation of SSTs, in 1930–1960. The skill reduction is explained by lower ENSO magnitude and variance in 1930–1960, as well as decreased SST persistence. The SST skill minima project onto surface winds, leading to worse predictions in coupled hindcasts compared to hindcasts using prescribed SSTs. Questions remain about the offset between the first and second principal components' skill minima, and how the skill minima impact the extra‐tropics.

Abstract The ice streams flowing into the Amundsen Sea, West Antarctica, are losing mass due to changes in oceanic basal melting of their floating ice shelves. Rapid ice‐shelf melting is sustained by the delivery of warm Circumpolar Deep Water to the ice‐shelf cavities, which is first supplied to the continental shelf by an undercurrent that flows eastward along the shelf break. Temporal variability of this undercurrent controls ice‐shelf basal melt variability. Recent work shows that on decadal timescales the undercurrent variability opposes surface wind variability. Using a regional model, we show that undercurrent variability is induced by sea‐ice freshwater fluxes, particularly those north of the shelf break, which affect the cross‐shelf break density gradient. This sea‐ice variability is linked to tropical Pacific variability impacting atmospheric conditions over the Amundsen Sea. Ice‐shelf melting also feeds back onto the undercurrent by affecting the on‐shelf density, thereby influencing shelf‐break density gradient anomalies.

Abstract Sea surface temperature (SST) variability on decadal timescales has been associated with global and regional climate variability and impacts. The mechanisms that drive decadal SST variability, however, remain highly uncertain. Many previous studies have examined the role of atmospheric variability in driving decadal SST variations. Here we assess the strength of oceanic forcing in driving decadal SST variability in observations and state‐of‐the‐art climate models by analyzing the relationship between surface heat flux and SST. We find a largely similar pattern of decadal oceanic forcing across all ocean basins, characterized by oceanic forcing about twice the strength of the atmospheric forcing in the mid‐ and high latitude regions, but comparable or weaker than the atmospheric forcing in the subtropics. The decadal oceanic forcing is hypothesized to be associated with the wind‐driven oceanic circulation, which is common across all ocean basins.

This study identifies that cold surges over the South China Sea (SCS) have experienced a significant change on decadal time scales. The results indicate that cold surges occur more frequently after the early 2000s than before and are at least partially explained by changes in circulation patterns. Both the negative phase of the Scandinavian (SCA) pattern and the cold phase of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) can induce increased cold surges and the IPO effect dominates in recent decades. When the IPO shifts to its cold phase, low-level cyclones are induced over the western North Pacific through a Gill response. The northeasterlies along the northwest flank of the cyclones further lead to intensified cold surges over the SCS. The above processes can be reproduced in coupled models, suggesting a robust connection between the IPO and cold surges. The present findings highlight the role of tropical forcing and bring insight into understanding of the future climate variability and change over East Asia during boreal winter. North Atlantic atmosphere–ocean variability is assessed in climate model simulations from HighResMIP that have low resolution (LR) or high resolution (HR) in their atmosphere and ocean model components. It is found that some of the LR simulations overestimate the low-frequency variability of subpolar sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies and underestimate its correlation with the NAO compared to ERA5. These deficiencies are significantly reduced in the HR simulations, and it is shown that the improvements are related to a reduction of intrinsic (non-NAO-driven) variability of the subpolar ocean circulation. To understand the cause of the overestimated intrinsic subpolar ocean variability in the LR simulations, a link is demonstrated between the amplitude of the subpolar ocean variability and the mean state of the Labrador–Irminger Seas. Supporting previous studies, the Labrador–Irminger Seas tend to be colder and fresher in the LR simulations compared to the HR simulations and oceanic observations from EN4. This promotes upper-ocean density anomalies in this region to be more salinity-controlled in the LR simulations versus more temperature-controlled in the HR simulations and EN4 observations. It is argued that this causes the excessive subpolar ocean variability in the LR simulations by favoring a positive feedback between subpolar upper-ocean salinity and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) anomalies, rather than a negative feedback between subpolar SST and AMOC anomalies as in the HR simulations. The findings overall suggest that the subpolar ocean mean state impacts the variability of the ocean circulation and SSTs, including their relationship with the atmospheric circulation, in the extratropical North Atlantic. The genesis potential index (GPI) has been used widely to estimate the influence of large-scale conditions on tropical cyclone (TC) genesis. Here we find that two GPIs, the Emanuel–Nolan GPI (ENGPI) and the dynamic GPI (DGPI), show opposite skills in quantifying decadal variability of TC genesis in the western North Pacific (WNP). During 1979–2020, ENGPI shows a reverse decadal variation to the WNP TC genesis with a significant negative correlation of −0.61, while DGPI can reasonably reproduce the decadal variation of the WNP TC genesis with a significant correlation of 0.66. The opposite skills of the two indices arise from the opposed effects of dynamic and thermodynamic parameters on TC genesis induced by a WNP anomalous cyclonic circulation that controls the decadal variation of TC genesis. On the one hand, the cyclonic circulation leads to favorable dynamical conditions including ascending motion, cyclonic vorticity, and weakened vertical shear, and thus tends to increase the DGPI. On the other hand, the cyclonic circulation leads to unfavorable thermodynamical conditions (decreased maximum potential intensity and midlevel humidity) that tends to decrease the ENGPI. As a result, the DGPI and ENGPI are reversely evolved and eventually lead to their opposite correlation between TC genesis. The significant positive correlation between DGPI and TC genesis suggests a critical role in the large-scale dynamical control of the decadal variability of the WNP TC genesis. Significance Statement: Tropical cyclones (TCs) account for one-third of the deaths and economic losses from weather-, climate-, and water-related disasters. Understanding variations in TC activity from the perspective of large-scale conditions is of great importance to seasonal forecasting and disaster mitigation. North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) variability plays a critical role in modulating the climate system. However, characterizing patterns of North Atlantic SST variability and diagnosing the associated mechanisms is challenging because they involve coupled atmosphere–ocean interactions with complex spatiotemporal relationships. Here we address these challenges by applying a time-evolving self-organizing map approach to a long preindustrial coupled control simulation and identify a variety of 10-yr spatiotemporal evolutions of winter SST anomalies, including but not limited to those associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation–Atlantic multidecadal variability (NAO–AMV)-like interactions. To assess mechanisms and atmospheric responses associated with various SST spatiotemporal evolutions, composites of atmospheric and oceanic variables associated with these evolutions are investigated. Results show that transient-eddy activities and atmospheric circulation responses exist in almost all the evolutions that are closely correlated to the details of the SST pattern. In terms of the mechanisms responsible for generating various SST evolutions, composites of ocean heat budget terms demonstrate that contributions to upper-ocean temperature tendency from resolved ocean advection and surface heat fluxes rarely oppose each other over 10-yr periods in the subpolar North Atlantic. We further explore the potential for predictability for some of these 10-yr SST evolutions that start with similar states but end with different states. However, we find that these are associated with abrupt changes in atmospheric variability and are unlikely to be predictable. In summary, this study broadly investigates the atmospheric responses to and the mechanisms governing the North Atlantic SST evolutions over 10-yr periods. Significance Statement: Climate variability in the North Atlantic Ocean has wide-ranging impacts on global and regional climate. However, the processes involved include interactions between the ocean and atmosphere that vary across both space and time, making it challenging to characterize and predict. Using a novel machine learning approach, this study identifies various time evolutions of North Atlantic sea surface temperature patterns over 10-yr periods. This includes evolutions with similar start states but different trajectories, which have important implications for predictability. Furthermore, we investigate the mechanisms responsible for these evolutions and how different sea surface temperature patterns affect atmospheric circulation through small-scale atmospheric disturbances. The search for an explanation of correlations of weather and climate with solar activity has uncovered some subtle effects of the varying solar inputs, which include irradiance, energetic particles, electric fields induced by the solar wind, and the modulation of the galactic cosmic ray flux. Relevant phenomena have been identified in stratospheric chemistry and dynamics and in aerosols, atmospheric electricity, and clouds. The effects are small and appear intermittently in statistical analyses of observations. Correlations and theory permit responses to several solar inputs effective on the decadal time scales, making it difficult to distinguish them observationally. No mechanism for tropospheric decadal change can be considered to be definitely established, but for the day-to-day time scale there is clear observational evidence for clouds responding to solar wind-induced current flow (JZ) in the global electric circuit, due to changes in ionospheric potential, and independently from Forbush decreases of the cosmic ray flux. The responses to JZ also correlate separately with ionospheric potential changes due to changes in day-to-day thunderstorm activity. The identified mechanism is for electric charge effects on in-cloud scavenging, and this implies a decadal response, in view of decadal changes in JZ. However, a complete and quantitative model of the inferred electrically induced changes in cloud microphysics is not yet available. Recent analysis of pan-tropical interactions suggests that post-1980 the tropical Indian Ocean's (TIO) influence on the tropical Pacific Ocean (TPO) appears to have subdued, while the tropical Atlantic Ocean's (TAO) influence has become more pronounced. The present study explores whether we can identify and dynamically explain any asymmetries in the pan-tropical connection between the TIO and TPO SSTs in an attempt to explain the recently reported weakening of the TIO influence. To this end, we carry out two idealized atmosphere-only experiments using the ACCESS atmospheric general circulation model where the sign of the decadal TIO SST signal is varied—presenting warm and cool TIO scenarios. We find a relatively strong asymmetric response of TPO precipitation to TIO SST anomalies, where average TPO precipitation shows a strong increase in response to TIO cooling, but a weaker decrease in response to TIO warming. The asymmetry is hypothesized to result from differences in the depth of latent heating over the TIO, which ultimately affects the depth of the remote response over the TPO. Asymmetries also occur in the spatial pattern of the changes in precipitation and surface winds. In the fully coupled system, these asymmetries would be expected to also alter the background state on which ENSO develops, providing a further mechanism by which the TIO influence may vary depending on its phase. In this study, we investigate how a single leading linear El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) mode, as studied in Part I, leads to the irregular coexistence of central Pacific (CP) and eastern Pacific (EP) ENSO, a phenomenon known as ENSO spatiotemporal diversity. This diversity is fundamentally generated by deterministic nonlinear pathways to chaos via the period-doubling route and, more prevailingly, the subharmonic resonance route with the presence of a seasonally varying basic state. When residing in the weakly nonlinear regime, the coupled system sustains a weak periodic oscillation with a mixed CP/EP pattern as captured by the linear ENSO mode. With a stronger nonlinearity effect, the ENSO behavior experiences a period-doubling bifurcation. The single ENSO orbit splits into coexisting CP-like and EP-like ENSO orbits. A sequence of period-doubling bifurcation results in an aperiodic oscillation featuring irregular CP and EP ENSO occurrences. The overlapping of subharmonic resonances between ENSO and the seasonal cycle allows this ENSO irregularity and diversity to be more readily excited. In the strongly nonlinear regime, the coupled system is dominated by regular EP ENSO. The deterministic ENSO spatiotemporal diversity is thus confined to a relatively narrow range corresponding to a moderately unstable ENSO mode. Stochastic forcing broadens this range and allows ENSO diversity to occur when the ENSO mode is weakly subcritical. A close relationship among a weakened mean zonal temperature gradient, stronger ENSO activity, and more (fewer) occurrences of EP (CP) ENSO is noted, indicating that ENSO–mean state interaction may yield ENSO regime modulations on the multidecadal time scale. Atlantic decadal-to-bidecadal variability (ADV) is described from a multimillennial control integration of a version of the Kiel Climate Model (KCM). The KCM's ADV is the second most energetic mode of long-term North Atlantic variability in that simulation, whereas the Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) is the leading mode that has been described in a previous study. The KCM's ADV can be regarded as a mixed oceanic gyre-overturning circulation mode that is forced by the North Atlantic Oscillation. The extratropical North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with the model's ADV initially exhibit a tripolar structure in the meridional direction, which is linked to the gyre circulation. After some years, the SST-anomaly pattern turns into a monopolar pattern located in the subpolar North Atlantic. This transition is related to the overturning circulation. The AMV and the ADV co-exist and share some similarities. Both modes of variability rely on the upper-ocean heat transport into the subpolar North Atlantic. They differ in the importance of the gyre and overturning circulations. In the ADV, gyre and overturning-heat transports into the subpolar North Atlantic are equally important in contrast to the AMV where the overturning contribution dominates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The decadal variability of extreme high temperature (EHT) in the mid and highlatitudes of continental Asia (MHLCA) and associated mechanisms were investigated. Observational analysis indicated that, after removing global warming, the first leading mode of the EHT events showed a meridional dipole pattern and had significant decadal variability. During the periods 1980–1994 and 2012–2019 (1995–2011), EHT events were more frequent and stronger (less frequent and weaker) in western-central Siberia than normal, whereas they were less frequent and weaker (more frequent and stronger) in the wide area to the south of Lake Baikal. Further Observational and CESM (Community Earth System Model) results based analysis suggested that decadal change in air–sea interaction in the North Atlantic play an important role in shaping the decadal variability of EHT events in MHLCA. On decadal timescales, meridional negative–positive–negative sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the North Atlantic and their coupled positive North Atlantic Oscillation can trigger stronger wave activity flux and cause a significant anticyclonic–cyclonic teleconnection wave train in the troposphere over the mid and high latitudes of the Eurasian continent. As a result, an anomalous high-pressure center is evident in western-central Siberia, and thereby reducing total cloud cover and causing stronger solar heating. Thus, EHT events become more frequent and stronger. On the contrary, for the areas south of Lake Baikal, EHT events are weakened by corresponding cyclonic circulation anomalies. Additionally, the CAM5 (Community Atmosphere Model version 5) experiments suggested more important driving role of the decadal North Atlantic tripole SST anomalies in the abovementioned processes. A cooling trend in summer (May-August) daytime temperatures since the mid-twentieth century over the central United States contrasts with strong warming of the western and eastern United States. Prior studies based on data through 1999 suggested that this so-called warming hole arose mainly from internal climate variability and thus would likely disappear. Yet it has prevailed for two more decades, despite accelerating global warming, compelling reexamination of causes that in addition to natural variability could include anthropogenic aerosol-induced cooling, hydrologic cycle intensification by greenhouse gas increases, and land use change impacts. Here we present evidence for the critical importance of hydrologic cycle change resulting from ocean-atmosphere drivers. Observational analysis reveals that the warming hole's persistence is consistent with unusually high summertime rainfall over the region during the first decades of the twenty-first century. Comparative analysis of large ensembles from four different climate models demonstrates that rainfall trends since the mid-twentieth century as large as observed can arise (although with low probability) via internal atmospheric variability alone, which induce warming-hole-like patterns over the central United States. In addition, atmosphereonly model experiments reveal that observed sea surface temperature changes since the mid-twentieth century have also favored central U.S cool/wet conditions during the early twenty-first century. We argue that this latter effect is symptomatic of external radiative forcing influences, which, via constraints on ocean warming patterns, have likewise contributed to persistence of the U.S. warming hole in roughly equal proportion to contributions by internal variability. Radiocarbon (14C) is a valuable tracer of ocean circulation, owing to its natural decay over thousands of years and to its perturbation by nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s and 1960s. Previous studies have used 14C to evaluate models or to investigate past climate change. However, the relationship between ocean 14C and ocean circulation changes over the past few decades has not been explored. Here we use an Ocean-Sea-ice model (NEMO) forced with transient or fixed atmospheric reanalysis (JRA-55-do) and atmospheric 14C and CO2 boundary conditions to investigate the effect of ocean circulation trends and variability on 14C. We find that 14C/C (∆14C) variability is generally anti-correlated with potential density variability. The areas where the largest variability occurs varies by depth: in upwelling regions at the surface, at the edges of the subtropical gyres at 300 m depth, and in Antarctic Intermediate Water and North Atlantic Deep Water at 1000 m depth. We find that trends in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation may influence trends in ∆14C in the North Atlantic. In the high-variability regions the simulated variations are larger than typical ocean ∆14C measurement uncertainty of 2–5‰ suggesting that ∆14C data could provide a useful tracer of circulation changes. The Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the leading mode of sub‐seasonal variability in the tropical atmosphere and is a source of predictability for extratropical weather through its teleconnections. MJO teleconnection patterns can be modulated by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on seasonal to interannual time scales. However, changes over decadal time scales are less well understood. ERA5 reanalysis data are used to show that the boreal winter MJO teleconnection pattern in the Northern Hemisphere has changed in recent decades in line with changes in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Variability. Changes are seen in the circulation, temperature and precipitation responses. In particular, from 1997, intraseasonal cold anomalies appear over Europe and the eastern United States due to MJO convection over the western Pacific; these were not present 20 years previously. The decadal variability observed is not the product of aliasing of ENSO modulation of the teleconnection. Plain Language Summary: Weather in different regions of the globe can be linked by planetary‐scale atmospheric waves, and these links can help forecasters to predict the weather. One such link, or teleconnection pattern, connects changes in rainfall over Indonesia and the tropical Pacific (from a weather system called the Madden–Julian Oscillation or MJO) to changes in the weather in North America and Europe. This study assesses this teleconnection pattern in two separate time periods (roughly the mid‐1970s to mid‐1990s and mid‐1990s to late 2010s) to analyze if and how it has changed. This study examines the changes in the outer size distribution of landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) over the Chinese mainland from 1977 to 2020. The period was divided into two epochs: 1977–98 and 1999–2020. The results show that the size distribution of landfalling TCs over South China has no apparent change, while that of landfalling TCs over East China (LTCEC) is narrower in the second epoch, and the difference in the median sizes between East China and South China become more significant. Furthermore, it is found that LTCEC formed over the western part of the western North Pacific (W-WNP) shifted to a larger size range (300–500 km) at landfall, while those formed over the eastern part of the western North Pacific (E-WNP) rarely grew to extremely large size (>500 km). Further investigation revealed that over the W-WNP, the genesis position of LTCEC migrated equatorward during the second epoch, leading to a longer TC lifetime before landfall. Also, the increase of background relative vorticity and moisture associated with the southward migration is conducive to larger initial vortices. For TCs originating from the E-WNP, the change in the active area of TC passages reduced the frequency of TCs affecting the Chinese coast. Moreover, the growth of TC size during the intensification stage was significantly suppressed, lowering the occurrence probability of extremely large TCs. Changes in the large-scale thermodynamic environments between the two epochs were explored. Extreme summer heat can have serious socioeconomic impacts in North China. Here, we explore the decadal variability of the number of extreme heat days in early-to-mid summer (June and July) and a related potential mechanism consistent with the major seasonal occurrence period of extreme heat events in North China (NCSH). Observational analyses show significant decadal variability in NCSH for 1981–2021, potentially linked to the Indo-Pacific warm pool and Northwest Pacific Ocean dipole (IPOD) in early-to-mid summer. Dynamic diagnostic analysis and the linear baroclinic model (LBM) show that the positive IPOD in early-to-mid summer can excite upward vertical wind anomalies in the South China-East China Sea region, shifting the position of the western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) to the east or weakening the degree of its control of the South China-East China Sea region, thus generating a positive geopotential height quadrupole (EAWPQ) pattern in the East Asia-Northwest Pacific region. Subsequently, the EAWPQ can cause air compression (expansion) over North China by regulating the tropospheric thickness anomalies in North China, thus increasing (decreasing) NCSH. Finally, an empirical model that incorporates the linear trend can better simulate the decadal NCSH compared to an empirical model based solely on the IPOD index, suggesting that the decadal variability of NCSH may be a combined contribution of the decadal IPOD and external linear forcing. As the understanding of decadal variability in climate systems deepens, there is a growing interest in investigating the decadal variability of seasonal-mean or monthly mean variables. This study aims to understand the seasonality observed in the amplitude of decadal variability. To accomplish this, we analyze the decadal variability of the monthly mean North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index and North Pacific index (NPI) over the past decades using two different calculating processes: the full smoothing (F) process and the seasonal-specific (SS) process. Our findings suggest that the F process only captures the decadal variability of annual-mean variables, whereas the SS process is suited for capturing the seasonality of decadal variability. We find that the seasonality in decadal variability aligns with the seasonality in interannual variability. Additionally, we explore the seasonality in decadal variability in atmospheric and oceanic variables. The seasonality in oceanic decadal variability, including sea surface temperature and salinity, is found to be weak and small. The amplitude of decadal variability in the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) is similar across different months, indicating weak seasonality in the PDO. On the other hand, decadal variability of lower-tropospheric atmospheric circulation, including horizontal wind, geopotential height, and surface air temperature, exhibits significant seasonality in the extratropics, with the strongest decadal variability occurring in winter. Moreover, the significant seasonality in decadal variability of precipitation is observed in the tropics, with the strongest decadal variability occurring in summer. Our study provides insights into understanding the seasonality of decadal variability, which can aid in the improvement of decadal prediction of climate variability. Against the backdrop of global warming, the Eurasian continent and its surrounding areas have experienced ununiform warming in recent decades. Variations in the meridional thermal contrast (MTC) in East Asia and its adjacent regions have a critical influence on the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM); therefore, its forcings were analyzed in this study. The results show that the MTC in East Asia and the surrounding regions showed significant decadal changes during the interval 1960–2014, with a decadal strengthening in the late 1970s and a decadal weakening in the late 1990s. Further investigation showed that internal variability was the dominant control on these two decadal changes of MTC, accounting for 135% and 78.5% of the two observed changes in the 1970s and 1990s, respectively. Based on pacemaker experiments and a method that reconstructs decadal changes in the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO), we found that a positive phase of the IPO tends to cause cooling in the low latitudes and warming in the mid–high latitudes and that a negative phase of the IPO tends to cause warming in the low latitudes and cooling in the mid–high latitudes, which in turn can explain 54.4% and 35.8% of the two internally generated decadal changes in the MTC, respectively. The Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO), when in the same phase as the IPO, exhibits an opposing pattern of surface air temperature. This only had a significant influence in the late 1990s, where it explained 37.9% of the internally generated decadal changes in the MTC. Our findings highlight that internal variability, especially that relating to the IPO and the AMO, should be considered when predicting future changes in thermal conditions in East Asia and its adjacent regions. Based on observations and simplified, comprehensive atmospheric models, we investigate the impact of the tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) on the West Antarctic temperature and sea ice concentration in austral winter (June–August) on decadal time scales. The tropical gradient SST anomaly (SSTA) associated with the positive phase of the Atlantic meridional mode (AMM) usually leads to cool anomalies over the Antarctic Peninsula (AP) and a dipole-like sea ice distribution, with ice growth in the Amundsen–Bellingshausen Sea and loss in the Ross Sea. When the AMM is in a positive phase, upward motion over the warm region in the North Atlantic and downward motion over the cold region in the South Atlantic strengthen the Southern Hemisphere Hadley cell, resulting in upper-level convergence over the southwestern Atlantic. This convergence induces a Rossby wave, leading to an anticyclone anomaly over the Amundsen–Bellingshausen Sea. Meridional component winds of this anticyclone anomaly are associated with wind-driven sea ice drift, temperature advection, and anomalous turbulence heat fluxes, leading to a dipole-like sea ice distribution and AP cooling. These findings are verified using two types of atmospheric models. The decadal variability and long-term trend of upper-ocean temperature in the Southeast Indian Ocean since the 1950s are investigated based on an eddy-resolving ocean model and two observation-based products. All three datasets show increasing trends and significant decadal changes in both Southeast Indian Subantarctic Mode Water (SEISAMW) core layer temperature and mixed layer temperature (MLT). The temperature change in the SEISAMW core layer is induced by subducted heat change that is in turn due to a change in the MLT on both long-term trend and decadal time scale. A heat budget analysis finds that the long-term increase of MLT is mainly resulted from a combination of more heat flux from the atmosphere to the ocean and shallower mixed layer depth, while both the intensified zonal wind stress and the vertical entrainment have a negative contribution to the increase in the MLT. The decadal variability of MLT is dominated by changes of surface thermal forcing and horizontal advection, with the former contributing more than the latter. The change in the surface thermal forcing is a result of changes of both surface heat flux and mixed layer depth, and the change in the horizontal advection is due mainly to the change in the zonal wind stress. Further analysis suggests that the decadal changes of surface heat flux and zonal wind stress in the SEISAMW formation region are dominated by local zonal and meridional sea-level pressure gradients, respectively. The dominant pattern of Northern Hemisphere extratropical climate variability is the Northern Annular Mode (NAM), which in wintertime represents the coupling of the stratospheric and tropospheric circulations. The internal variability associated with the NAM has been shown to give rise to substantial uncertainty in climate projections of regional surface air temperatures (SATs), but it's unclear how much of this variability arises from stratosphere‐troposphere coupling processes. Here, using three large‐ensemble coupled climate model simulations from 1850 to 2100 with varying fidelity of stratosphere‐troposphere coupling processes, we demonstrate that regional SAT variability across timescales is amplified when the tropospheric NAM is coupled to the stratospheric NAM. Moreover, models that lack adequate simulation of stratosphere‐troposphere coupling processes may not capture the magnitude of uncertainty in near‐term SAT projections associated with this coupling. Melt rates of West Antarctic ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea track large decadal variations in the volume of warm water at their outlets. This variability is generally attributed to wind‐driven variations in warm water transport toward ice shelves. Inspired by conceptual representations of the global overturning circulation, we introduce a simple model for the evolution of the thermocline, which caps the warm water layer at the ice‐shelf front. This model demonstrates that interannual variations in coastal polynya buoyancy forcing can generate large decadal‐scale thermocline depth variations, even when the supply of warm water from the shelf‐break is fixed. The modeled variability involves transitions between bistable high and low melt regimes, enabled by feedbacks between basal melt rates and ice front stratification strength. Our simple model captures observed variations in near‐coast thermocline depth and stratification strength, and poses an alternative mechanism for warm water volume changes to wind‐driven theories. The modeled variability relies on interactions between ice shelf melt and coastal polynyas, regions where enhanced wintertime sea‐ice production can trigger mixing that diverts heat carried by warm waters away from the ice shelf and into the atmosphere. Higher melt rates inhibit polynya convection, allowing more warm water into the ice shelf cavity and reinforcing a high melt state, whilst lower melt rates facilitate polynya convection, diverting heat away from the ice shelf and reinforcing a low melt state. Interannual variations in polynya sea‐ice production trigger shifts between these reinforcing states. Our results promote the importance of coastal processes in explaining observed variations in Amundsen Sea ice shelf melt, which have previously been attributed to remote wind patterns. This study examined the sea level (SL) changes on the interdecadal timescale in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) in response to the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) in 20 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. The analysis suggests that the interdecadal sea level pattern variation in the Thermocline Ridge of the Indian Ocean (TRIO) area coincides with the IPO phases and is mainly caused by fluctuations of surface forcing over the TIO. Changes in tropical wind stress curl (WSC) mainly induce the SL variability on the interdecadal timescale associated with IPO in the TRIO region in both observations and models. The stochastic wind forcing and its interaction with the ocean's internal variability produce significant interdecadal SL fluctuation in the southeast Indian Ocean. We evaluated the ability of 20 CMIP6 models to capture interdecadal variations in sea level teleconnections. We found that about 75% of models reproduce decadal fluctuations related to IPO pretty well. The interdecadal variations of the SL in the western TIO emerge primarily in response to westward propagating downwelling Rossby waves induced by the WSC in the central‐south TIO in MMM, and models as in observations. Pacific IPO‐related anomalies primarily spread through the oceanic pathways of the Maritime Continent in the eastern Indian Ocean. Further, the IPO induces changes in the western Indian Ocean WSC through atmospheric pathways, which in turn causes Rossby waves to move westward, affecting the southwest Indian SL. Almost all the models and MMM show interdecadal SL variations in TIO associated with IPO. This study is beneficial as interdecadal prediction research on SL has a significant societal need. The uptake of dissolved oxygen from the atmosphere via air-sea gas exchange and its physical transport away from the region of uptake are crucial for supplying oxygen to the deep ocean. This process takes place in a few key regions that feature intense oxygen uptake, deep water formation, and physical oxygen export. In this study we analyze one such region, the Labrador Sea, utilizing the World Ocean Database (WOD) to construct a 65–year oxygen content time series in the Labrador Sea Water (LSW) layer (0–2200 m). The data reveal decadal variability associated with the strength of deep convection, with a maximum anomaly of 27 mol m–2 in 1992. There is no long-term trend in the time series, suggesting that the mean oxygen uptake is balanced by oxygen export out of the region. We compared the time series with output from nine models of the Ocean Model Intercomparison Project phase 1 in the Climate Model Intercomparison Project phase 6, (CMIP6-OMIP1), and constructed a “model score” to evaluate how well they match oxygen observations. Most CMIP6-OMIP1 models score around 50/100 points and the highest score is 57/100 for the ensemble mean, suggesting that improvements are needed. All of the models underestimate the maximum oxygen content anomaly in the 1990s. One possible cause for this is the representation of air-sea gas exchange for oxygen, with all models underestimating the mean uptake by a factor of two or more. Unrealistically deep convection and biased mean oxygen profiles may also contribute to the mismatch. Refining the representation of these processes in climate models could be vital for enhanced predictions of deoxygenation. In the CMIP6-OMIP1 multi-model mean, oxygen uptake has its maximum in 1980–1992, followed by a decrease in 1994–2006. There is a concurrent decrease in export, but oxygen storage also changes between the two periods, with oxygen accumulated in the first period and drained out in the second. Consequently, the change in oxygen export (5%) is much less than that in uptake (28%), suggesting that newly ventilated LSW which remains in the formation region acts to buffer the linkage between air-sea gas exchange and oxygen export.

The warming climate is causing a strengthening of ocean stratification. Ocean stratification, in turn, has significant impacts on physical, biogeochemical and ecological processes, such as ocean circulation, ventilation, air-sea interactions, nutrient fluxes, primary productivity and fisheries. How these processes are affected in detail by changing stratification still remains uncertain and are likely to vary locally. Here, we investigate the state and trend of different parameters characterizing the stratification of the global upper-ocean which can be derived from Argo profiles for the period 2006-2021. Among those parameters are mixed layer depth, magnitude and depth of the vertical stratification maximum. The summertime stratification maximum has increased in both hemispheres, respectively. During wintertime, the stratification maximum has intensified in the Northern Hemisphere, while changes in the Southern Hemisphere have been relatively small. Comparisons to mixed layer characteristics show that a strengthening stratification is mainly accompanied by a warming and freshening of the mixed layer. In agreement with previous observational studies, we find a large-scale mixed layer deepening that regionally contributes to the increasing stratification. Globally, the vertical stratification maximum strengthens by 7-8% and the mixed layer deepens by 4 m during 2006-2021. This hints to an ongoing de-coupling of the surface ocean from the ocean interior. The investigated changes can help determine the origin of existing model-observation discrepancies and improve predictions on climate change impact on upper-ocean ecology and biogeochemistry.

Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) is one of the most important water masses globally in taking up anthropogenic heat and carbon dioxide. However, its long‐term changes in response to varying climatic conditions are not well understood. We use an ocean state estimate to analyze SAMW volume budgets for the period 1992 to 2017. They reveal a decadal SAMW volume reorganization comparable to the long‐term trend in Indian Ocean, and a multi‐decadal volume reorganization exceeding the long‐term trend in the Pacific. In both sectors, the SAMW reorganization exhibits a two‐layer density structure, with compensating volume changes of lighter and denser SAMW, driven by heat flux changes in the Indian sector and central Pacific and freshwater flux changes in the southeast Pacific. This variability is governed by a cumulative effect of surface flux anomalies associated with the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation. Shorter‐term trends observed during the Argo period are largely explained by this variability. Measurements taken by a fleet of robotic instruments, that drift in the ocean, documented a volume increase of lighter SAMW and a volume decrease of denser SAMW since the mid‐2000s. However, the drivers of this variability are still not completely understood. Using the results of a model that assimilates all observations, also prior to this period, we show that the change in SAMW volume primarily arises from fluctuations on timescales of a decade or longer. These decadal to multidecadal fluctuations exhibit a reorganization of volume from lighter to denser SAMW and vice versa, with nearly compensating changes. They are primarily driven by atmospheric forcing variations governed by teleconnections from the tropical Pacific. We find that the SAMW variability does not only respond to the instantaneous atmospheric forcing, but the ocean acts as an integrator of the atmospheric forcing and has a memory of atmospheric conditions in previous years. The Kuroshio Extension (KE) is known to undergo large decadal variations, especially after the 1976/77 climate regime shift. Due to strong ocean‐atmosphere interactions over the KE, the region may be a key region for basin‐scale Pacific decadal climate variability. Although baroclinic Rossby waves are suggested to influence the KE decadal variability, it remains unclear where and how decadal atmospheric forcing anomalies that induce the Rossby waves are generated. Using a linear Rossby wave model forced by reanalysis surface wind stress, the relative contribution of wind stress at each longitude is quantified for the first time. It is shown that the contribution is largest at 160°W, and 40% of the total variance in the decadal KE variability is explained by the wind forcing around 170°–150°W. Further analyses suggest that the atmospheric forcing anomalies are generated by the El Niño/Southern Oscillation Modoki through an atmospheric teleconnection after the regime shift. The North Pacific storm-track activity is suppressed substantially under the excessively strong westerlies to form a distinct minimum in midwinter, which seems inconsistent with linear baroclinic instability theory. This “midwinter minimum” of the storm-track activity has been intensively investigated for decades as a test case for storm-track dynamics. However, the mechanisms controlling it are yet to be fully unveiled and are still under debate. Here we investigate the detailed seasonal evolution of the climatological density of surface migratory anticyclones over the North Pacific, in comparison with its counterpart for cyclones, based on a Lagrangian tracking algorithm. We demonstrate that the frequency of surface cyclones over the North Pacific maximizes in midwinter, whereas that of anticyclones exhibits a distinct midwinter minimum under the upstream influence, especially from the Japan Sea region. In midwinter, it is only on such a rare occasion that prominent weakening of the East Asian winter monsoon allows a migratory surface anticyclone to form over the Japan Sea, despite the unfavorable climatological-mean conditions due to persistent monsoonal cold-air outbreaks and the excessively strong upper-tropospheric westerlies. The midwinter minimum of the North Pacific anticyclone density suggests that anticyclones are likely the key to understanding the midwinter minimum of the North Pacific storm-track activity as measured by Eulerian eddy statistics.
