Search

One-neutron knockout from 24O leading to the first excited state in 23O has been measured for a proton target at a beam energy of 62 MeV/nucleon. The decay energy spectrum of the neutron unbound state of 23O was reconstructed from the measured four momenta of the 22O fragment and emitted neutron. A sharp peak was found at Edecay=50$\pm$3 keV, corresponding to an excited state in 23O at 2.78$\pm$0.11 MeV, as observed in previous measurements. The longitudinal momentum distribution for this state was consistent with d -wave neutron knockout, providing support for a J{\pi} assignment of 5/2+. The associated spectroscopic factor was deduced to be C2S(0d5/2)=4.1$\pm$0.4 by comparing the measured cross section (View the MathML source) with a distorted wave impulse approximation calculation. Such a large occupancy for the neutron 0d5/2 orbital is in line with the N=16 shell closure in 24O., Comment: Published in Physics Letters B (18 October 2014)

A search for isomeric gamma-decays among fission fragments from 345 MeV/nucleon 238U has been performed at the RIKEN Nishina Center RI Beam Factory. Fission fragments were selected and identified using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS and were implanted in an aluminum stopper. Delayed gamma-rays were detected using three clover-type high-purity germanium detectors located at the focal plane within a time window of 20 microseconds following the implantation. We identified a total of 54 microsecond isomers with half-lives of ~0.1 - 10 microseconds, including discovery of 18 new isomers in very neutron-rich nuclei: 59Tim, 90Asm, 92Sem, 93Sem, 94Brm, 95Brm, 96Brm, 97Rbm, 108Nbm, 109Mom, 117Rum, 119Rum, 120Rhm, 122Rhm, 121Pdm, 124Pdm, 124Agm and 126Agm, and obtained a wealth of spectroscopic information such as half-lives, gamma-ray energies, gamma-ray relative intensities and gamma-gamma coincidences over a wide range of neutron-rich exotic nuclei. Proposed level schemes are presented for 59Tim, 82Gam, 92Brm, 94Brm, 95Brm, 97Rbm, 98Rbm, 108Nbm, 108Zrm, 109Mom, 117Rum, 119Rum, 120Rhm, 122Rhm, 121Pdm, 124Agm and 125Agm, based on the obtained spectroscopic information and the systematics in neighboring nuclei. Nature of the nuclear isomerism is discussed in relation to evolution of nuclear structure.

The unbound excited states of the neutron drip-line isotope 24O have been investigated via the 24O(p,p')23O+n reaction in inverse kinematics at a beam energy of 62 MeV/nucleon. The decay energy spectrum of 24O* was reconstructed from the momenta of 23O and the neutron. The spin-parity of the first excited state, observed at Ex = 4.65 +/- 0.14 MeV, was determined to be Jpi = 2+ from the angular distribution of the cross section. Higher lying states were also observed. The quadrupole transition parameter beta2 of the 2+ state was deduced, for the first time, to be 0.15 +/- 0.04. The relatively high excitation energy and small beta2 value are indicative of the N = 16 shell closure in 24O., Comment: to be submitted to Physical Review Letters

The structure of $^{19,20,22}$C has been investigated using high-energy (about 240 MeV/nucleon) one- and two-neutron removal reactions on a carbon target. Measurements were made of the inclusive cross sections and momentum distributions for the charged residues. Narrow momentum distributions were observed for one-neutron removal from $^{19}$C and $^{20}$C and two-neutron removal from $^{22}$C. Two-neutron removal from $^{20}$C resulted in a relatively broad momentum distribution. The results are compared with eikonal-model calculations combined with shell-model structure information. The neutron-removal cross sections and associated momentum distributions are calculated for transitions to both the particle-bound and particle-unbound final states. The calculations take into account the population of the mass $A-1$ reaction residues, $^{A-1}$C, and, following one-neutron emission after one-neutron removal, the mass $A-2$ two-neutron removal residues, $^{A-2}$C. The smaller contributions of direct two-neutron removal, that populate the $^{A-2}$C residues in a single step, are also computed. The data and calculations are shown to be in good overall agreement and consistent with the predicted shell-model ground state configurations and the one-neutron overlaps with low-lying states in $^{18-21}$C. These suggest significant $\nu{s}_{1/2}^2$ valence neutron configurations in both $^{20}$C and $^{22}$C. The results for $^{22}$C strongly support the picture of $^{22}$C as a two-neutron halo nucleus with a dominant $\nu{s}_{1/2}^2$ ground state configuration., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

The infrared dark cloud G359.94+0.17 is a conspicuous, opaque cloud, which is seen in silhouette against the Galactic center. We found unexpectedly strong (~50 Jy) maser emission of CH3OH at 44 GHz with additional weak 22 GHz H2O maser and 43 GHz SiO thermal emissions toward this cloud. Detections of these molecular lines indicate that strong star forming activities are proceeding in this cloud, which were not reported previously despite of numerous works toward the Galactic center. The line profiles of the NH3 inversion lines at 23 GHz indicate that G359.94+0.17 is composed of mainly two clouds with V(lsr)= 0, and 15 km/s overlapped on the line of sight. In order to study the streaming motions of miras in the Solar neighborhood, we newly surveyed 379 red variables in the SiO maser lines at 42.821 and 43.122 GHz with the Nobeyama 45m radio telescope. Accurate radial velocities were obtained for 229 (220 new) detected stars. The sample is selected from optical variables found by new automated surveys: the Northern Sky Variability Survey and the All Sky Automated Survey. The new sample consists of the "bluer" objects compared with those observed in the previous SiO surveys. The distances to the objects are estimated using the period-luminosity relation, and they are mostly less than 3 kpc from the Sun. The longitude-velocity diagram reveals three prominent groups of stars deviant from the circular Galactic rotation with a flat rotation curve. In addition to the Hercules group of stars which was studied before, we found two new deviant groups: one toward the Perseus arm and the other toward the Sagittarius arm. These two groups both exhibit anomalous motions toward the Galactic center, which seem to be consistent with the noncircular motions of these spiral arms found in the recent VLBI proper-motion measurements for maser gas clumps., Comment: PASJ 64 no.1 (2012 Feb. 25 issue) in press. Context. V838 Mon is an eruptive variable, which exploded in 2002. It displayed the most spectacular light echo ever observed. However, neither the origin of the reflecting matter nor the nature of the 2002 outburst have been firmly constrained. Aims. We investigate the nature of the CO radio emission detected in the field of the light echo. In particular, we explore its connection to the echoing dust around V838 Mon. Methods. We observed the echo region in multiple CO rotational transitions. We present and analyse maps of the region obtained in the 12CO(1-0) and (3-2) lines. In addition, deep spectra at several positions were acquired in 12CO(1-0), (2-1), (3-2), and 13CO(1-0), (2-1). Radiative transfer modelling of line intensities is performed for chosen positions to constrain the kinetic temperatures and densities. We derive global parameters (e.g. mass, distance, total column density) of the emitting cloud. Results. We found that a compact molecular cloud is located within the echo region. The molecular emission is physically connected to the dusty environment seen in the optical echo and they both belong to the same translucent cloud. The interstellar nature of the cloud is confirmed by its high mass of 90-150 Msun. We propose that the cloud consists of material remaining after the formation of the cluster to which V838 Mon belongs. We report on the time variation of SiO maser emission from the symbiotic stellar system V407 Cyg after the classical nova outburst on 2010 March 10. Although both the SiO $J=1$--0 $v=1$ and 2 lines at 43.122 and 42.821 GHz were found previously in the envelope of a mira in the binary system, only weak emission of the $J=1$--0 $v=2$ line has continuously been detectable after the nova outburst. The line profile exhibited a dramatic change several weeks after the burst; the component on the higher-velocity side of the systemic velocity disappeared two weeks after the burst, and a new persistent component appeared on the lower-velocity side later. These observations indicate that the SiO emitting regions are wiped out in a time scale of two weeks by the nova shock, but a part of the masing region is quickly replenished by cool molecular gases expelled by the mira pulsation., Comment: 1 table, 3 figures; PASJ 63 no.1 (2011 Feb. 25 issue) in press. We have conducted VLBA phase-referencing monitoring of H2O masers around the red supergiant, S Persei, for six years. We have fitted maser motions to a simple expanding-shell model with a common annual parallax and stellar proper motion, and obtained the annual parallax as 0.413+/-0.017 mas, and the stellar proper motion as (-0.49+/-0.23 mas/yr, -1.19+/-0.20 mas/yr) in right ascension and declination, respectively. The obtained annual parallax corresponds to the trigonometric distance of 2.42+0.11-0.09 kpc. Assuming the Galactocentric distance of the Sun of 8.5 kpc, the circular rotational velocity of the LSR at the distance of the Sun of 220 km/s, and a flat Galactic rotation curve, S Persei is suggested to have a non-circular motion deviating from the Galactic circular rotation for 15 km/s, which is mainly dominated by the anti rotation direction component of 12.9+/-2.9 km/s. This red supergiant is thought to belong to the OB association, Per OB1, so that this non-circular motion is representative of a motion of the OB association in the Milky Way. This non-circular motion is somewhat larger than that explained by the standard density-wave theory for a spiral galaxy, and is attributed to either a cluster shuffling of the OB association, or to non-linear interactions between non-stationary spiral arms and multi-phase interstellar media. The structure of the neutron rich sodium isotopes 31,32,33Na was investigated by means of in-beam gammaray spectroscopy following one-neutron knockout and inelastic scattering of radioactive beams provided by the RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. The secondary beams were selected and separated by the fragment separator BigRIPS and incident at ~240 meV/u on a natural carbon (secondary) target, which was surrounded by the DALI2 array to detect coincident de-excitation gammarays. Scattered particles were identified by the spectrometer ZeroDegree. In 31Na, a new decay gammaray was observed in coincidence with the known (5/2+)-> 3/2(+) transition, while for 32,33Na excited states are reported for the first time. From a comparison to state-of-the-art shell model calculations it is concluded that the newly observed excited state in 31Na belongs to a rotational band formed by a 2p2h intruder configuration within the "Island of Inversion"., Comment: Accepted for Publication in Phys. We present the result of radio observations of red supergiants in the star cluster, Stephenson's #2, and candidates for red supergiants in the star clusters, Mercer et al. (2005)'s #4, #8, and #13, in the SiO and H$_2$O maser lines.The Stephenson's #2 cluster and nearby aggregation at the South-West contain more than 15 red supergiants. We detected one at the center of Stephenson's #2 and three in the south-west aggregation in the SiO maser line, and three of these 4 were also detected in the H2O maser line. The average radial velocity of the 4 detected objects is 96 km s^{-1}, giving a kinematic distance of 5.5 kpc, which locates this cluster near the base of the Scutum-Crux spiral arm. We also detected 6 SiO emitting objects associated with the other star clusters. In addition, mapping observations in the CO J=1--0 line toward these clusters revealed that an appreciable amount of molecular gas still remains around Stephenson's #2 cluster in contrast to the prototypical red-supergiant cluster, Bica et al.'s #122. We report on the first spectroscopic study of the N=22 nucleus 32Ne at the newly completed RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. A single gamma-ray line with an energy of 722(9) keV was observed in both inelastic scattering of a 226 MeV/u 32Ne beam on a Carbon target and proton removal from 33Na at 245 MeV/u. This transition is assigned to the de-excitation of the first J^pi = 2+ state in 32Ne to the 0+ ground state. Interpreted through comparison with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, the low excitation energy demonstrates that the Island of Inversion extends to at least N=22 for the Ne isotopes., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Aims: A pilot project has been carried out to measure circumstellar CO emission from three OH/IR stars close to the Galactic centre. The intention was to find out whether it would be possible to conduct a large-scale survey for mass-loss rates using, for example, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). Such a survey would increase our understanding of the evolution of the Galactic bulge. Methods: Two millimetre-wave instruments were used: the Nobeyama Millimeter Array at 115 GHz and the Submillimeter Array at 230 GHz. An interferometer is necessary as a `spatial filter' in this region of space because of the confusion with interstellar CO emission. Results: Towards two of the stars, CO emission was detected with positions and radial velocities coinciding within the statistical errors with the corresponding data of the associated OH sources. However, for one of the stars the line profile is not what one expects for an unresolved expanding circumstellar envelope. We believe that this CO envelope is partially resolved and that this star therefore is a foreground star not belonging to the bulge. Conclusions: The results of the observations have shown that it is possible to detect line profiles of circumstellar CO from late-type stars both within and in the direction of the Galactic bulge. We report on the H2O maser distributions around IRAS 22480+6002 (=IRC+60370) observed with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) at three epochs spanning 2 months. This object was identified as a K-type supergiant in 1970s, which was unusual as a stellar maser source. The spectrum of H2O masers consists of 5 peaks separated roughly equally by a few km/s each. The H2O masers were spatially resolved into more than 15 features, which spread about 50 mas along the east--west direction. However, no correlation was found between the proper motion vectors and their spatial distributions; the velocity field of the envelope seems random. A statistical parallax method applied to the observed proper-motion data set gives a distance of 1.0+-0.4 kpc for this object, that is considerably smaller than previously thought. The distance indicates that this is an evolved star with L~5800 Lsun. We report on the high-precision astrometric observations of maser sources around the Galactic Center in the SiO J=1--0 v=1 and 2 lines with the VLBA during 2001 -- 2004. With phase-referencing interferometry referred to the radio continuum source Sgr A*, accurate positions of masers were obtained for three detected objects: IRS 10 EE (7 epochs), IRS 15NE (2 epochs), and SiO 6 (only 1 epoch). Because circumstellar masers of these objects were resolved into several components, proper motions for the maser sources were derived with several different methods. Combining our VLBA results with those of the previous VLA observations, we obtained the IRS 10EE proper motion of 76+-3 km s^{-1} (at 8 kpc) to the south relative to Sgr A*. Almost null proper motion of this star in the east--west direction results in a net transverse motion of the infrared reference frame of about 30+-9 km s^{-1} to the west relative to Sgr A*. Using the 3.6/4.5/5.8/8.0 micron images with 1.2 arcsec pixel resolution from the Spitzer/GLIMPSE survey, we investigated 23 masing and 18 very red objects that were not identified in the 2MASS survey. Counterparts for all selected objects were found in the GLIMPSE images. Color indices in these IR bands suggest the presence of a high-extinction layer of more than a few tenths of a solar mass in front of the central star. Furthermore, radio observations in the SiO and H2O maser lines found characteristic maser-line spectra of the embedded objects, e.g., the SiO J=1-0 line intensity in the v=2 state stronger than that of the v=1 state, or very widespread H2O maser emission spectra. This indicates that these objects are actually enshrouded by very thick circumstellar matter, some of which cannot be ascribed to the AGB wind of the central star. We obtained H-band polarimetric data of IRAS 19312+1950 using the near-infrared camera (CIAO) on the 8 m Subaru telescope. In order to investigate the physical properties of the central star and the nebula, we performed dust radiative transfer modeling and compared the model results with the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs), the radial profiles of the total intensity image, and the fraction of linear polarization map. The total intensity image shows a nearly spherical core with ~3" radius, an S-shaped arm extending ~10" in the northwest to southeast direction, and an extended lobe towards the southwest. The polarization map shows a centro-symmetric vector alignment in almost the entire nebula and low polarizations along the S-shaped arm. These results suggest that the nebula is accompanied by a central star, and the S-shaped arm has a physically ring-like structure. From our radiative transfer modeling, we estimated the stellar temperature, the bolometric luminosity, and the current mass-loss rate to be 2800 K, 7000 L_sun, and 5.3x10^{-6} M_sun yr^{-1}, respectively. Taking into account previous observational results, such as the detection of SiO maser emissions and silicate absorption feature in the 10 $\mu$m spectrum, our dust radiative transfer analysis based on our NIR imaging polarimetry suggests that (1) the central star of IRAS 19312+1950 is likely to be an oxygen-rich, dust-enshrouded AGB star and (2) most of the circumstellar material originates from other sources (e.g. ambient dark clouds) rather than as a result of mass loss from the central star., Comment: 8 pages with 4 figures

We have searched for the SiO J=1--0 v= 1 and 2 maser lines at ~ 43 GHz in 277 2MASS/MSX/IRAS sources off the Galactic plane (|b|> 3 deg), which resulted in 119 (112 new) detections. Among the new detections, are two very faint objects with MSX 12 micron flux densities below 2 Jy. These are likely to be O-rich AGB-stars associated with dwarf-galaxy tidal tails. The sample also includes medium bright MSX objects at moderately high Galactic latitudes (3 deg<|b|<5 deg) and in the IRAS gap at higher latitudes. A signature of a warp of the inner Galactic disk is found for a disk subsample. This warp appears relatively strongly in the area of 0

We report the detection, for the first time, of HCO+ (J=1-0) emission as well as marginal CO (J=1-0) emission toward the planetary nebula (PN) K3-35 as a result of a molecular survey carried out toward this source. We also report new observations of the previously detected CO (J=2-1) and water maser emission, as well as upper limits for the emission of the SiO, H13CO+, HNC, HCN, HC3OH, HC5N, CS, HC3N, 13CO, CN, and NH3 molecules. From the ratio of CO (J=2-1) to CO (J=1-0) emission we have estimated the kinetic temperature of the molecular gas, obtaining a value of ~20 K. Using this result, we have estimated a molecular mass for the envelope of ~ 0.017 M_Sun, and an HCO+ abundance relative to H_2 of 6 X 10^-7, similar to the abundances found in other PNe. K~3-35 is remarkable because it is one of the two PNe reported to exhibit water maser emission, which is present in the central region as well as at a distance of $\simeq$ 5000 AU away from the center. The presence of molecular emission provides some clues that could help to understand the persistence of water molecules in the envelope of K 3-35. The HCO$^{+}$ emission could be arising in dense molecular clumps, that may provide the shielding mechanism which protects water molecules in this source., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, accepted in AJ, in press

We investigated stellar maser sources with no IRAS counterpart at the radio, middle-infrared, and near-infrared wavelengths. A 43 GHz SiO maser search for 120 2MASS/MSX objects, and 10 OH 1612 MHz sources with no or a very faint MSX counterpart, resulted in 43 SiO detections: one OH 1612 MHz source, 2 near-infrared stars, and 40 MSX sources. Additional near-infrared J-, H-, and K-band observations of the OH 1612 MHz sources detected 5 near-infrared counterparts. Furthermore, middle-infrared imaging observations at 8.8, 9.7, 12.4, and 24.5 micron with the Subaru 8.2-m telescope found counterparts for 2 near-infrared stars with SiO masers, and counterparts for 6 OH 1612 MHz sources. However, 4 OH 1612 MHz sources were not detected in the sensitive near- and middle-infrared searches; three of these are relatively strong OH maser sources for which the positions were known accurately. The bipolar nebula, IRAS 19312+1950, is a unique SiO maser source exhibiting both properties as young and evolved objects. To clarify the nature of this object, we made molecular line observations with the Nobeyama 45-m radio telescope. We detected emission from O-bearing (HCO^+, SiO, SO, and SO_2), C- and N-bearing molecules (CN, CS, HCN, HNC, NH_3, N_2H^+, HC_3N, H_2CS, and CH_3OH), and their isotopic species (C^17O, ^13C^18O, and C^34S). Line profiles consist of a weak broad (Dv 30 km/s) and/or a strong narrow (DV< 5 km/s) components, depending on molecular species. Strong time variations of H_2O and SiO masers were also observed. Numerical modeling of the envelope with the LVG-code results in a good fit of the model with a mass loss rate of 2.6 10^-4 M_sun/yr to the observed intensities for the broad-component lines. On the other hand, non-O-bearing molecules, which have only the narrow profiles, were found to have abundances typical to those in cool dust clouds. No isotopic enrichment was found, indicating little evidence of the narrow cool component being an ejecta of the central AGB star or a possible companion. We have surveyed 401 color selected IRAS sources in the Galactic disk in the SiO J=1--0 v= 1 and 2 maser lines at 43 GHz, resulting in 254 (239 new) detections. The observed sources lie mostly in a strip of the inner Galactic disk with boundaries -10

We have surveyed ~400 known large-amplitude variables within 15' of the galactic center in the SiO J=1--0 v=1 and 2 maser lines at 43 GHz, resulting in 179 detections. SiO lines were also detected from 16 other resulting in 180 detections. SiO lines were also detected from 16 other sources, which are located within 20" (the telescope half beamwidth) of the program objects. The detection rate of 48 percent is comparable to that obtained in Bulge IRAS source surveys. Among the SiO detections, five stars have radial velocities greater than 200 km/s. The SiO detection rate increases steeply with the period of light variation, particularly for stars with P>500 d, where it exceeds 80%. We found that, at a given period, the SiO detection rate is approximately three times that for OH. These facts suggest that the large-amplitude variables in the Nuclear Disk region are AGB stars similar in their overall properties to the inner and outer Bulge IRAS/SiO sources. From the set of radial velocity data, the mass distribution within 30 pc of the galactic center is derived by a new method which is based on the collisionless Boltzmann equation integrated along the line of sight. The mass within 30 pc is about 6.4 [\pm 0.7] \times 10^7 M_{\odot} and the mass of the central black hole is 2.7 [\pm 1.3] \times 10^6 M_{\odot}. Consideration of the line-of-sight velocity of each star and its potential energy leads to the conclusion that the five high-velocity stars come from galactocentric distances as high as 300 pc. The high-velocity subsample of stars with negative radial velocities exhibits a tendency to have brighter K magnitudes than the subsample of stars with positive velocities. IRAS 19312+1950 is an SiO maser source that exhibits a prominent bipolar nebulosity. Mapping observations of this object were made in the CO J=1--0, 13CO J=1--0, C18O J=1--0, CS J=2--1, and HCN J=1--0 lines and in the 150 GHz continuum band. Near-infrared imaging observations were also made in the J, H, and K-bands. The line profiles of the 12CO and HCN spectra consist of a weak broad component with a line width of about 50 km/s and a strong narrow component of the width of about 3 km/s. The profiles of the 13CO, C18O, and CS lines have only the narrow component. Both of the components have an intensity peak at the IRAS position. The narrow component was clearly resolved with a 15'' telescope beam. The spectral energy distribution of this object exhibits a doubly peaked profile between 1 and 25 micron. The 150 GHz continuum flux density was found to be 0.07 Jy, which is consistent with the flux density predicted by the expanding envelope model with a mass loss rate of ~10^{-4} M_sun/y at a distance of 2.5 kpc. We argue that the broad component originates from the expanding envelope of this object, and that the hot dust cloud, which is the source of the narrow component, is also physically associated with this object. Though the present observations do not preclude the possibility of a young stellar object, we argue that it is less plausible. We have surveyed known large-amplitude variables within 15' of the Galactic center in the SiO J=1-0 v=1 and 2 maser lines at 43 GHz, resulting in 79 detections and 58 non-detections. The detection rate of 58 percent is comparable to that obtained in Bulge IRAS source surveys. SiO lines were also detected from four other sources near the program objects. The SiO detection rate increases steeply with the period, particularly for stars with P>500 d, where it exceeds 80%. We found at a given period that the SiO detection rate is approximately double that for OH. These facts suggest that the large-amplitude variables in the Nuclear Disk region are AGB stars similar in their overall properties to the inner and outer bulge IRAS/SiO sources., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 Table. This paper reports a detection of the 30 micron emission feature from the C-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star IRAS 03313+6058 based on the ISO-SWS observation. Modeling of the spectral energy distribution shows that this emission starts at about 20 micron and possibly extends to the limit (45 micron) of the observation. By assuming MgS as the carrier, the number ratio of Sulfur atom in MgS to Hydrogen atom in total, n(S)/n(H), is 3. 10{-6} from model fitting.
