ZnO microhair-clasps were synthesized on silicon substrate by the vapor-phase transport method at the temperature of 900 °C under atmospheric pressure. The microstructure and morphology of ZnO microhair-clasps were evaluated by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The growth mechanism of the microhair-clasps was investigated. Room temperature photoluminescence spectra of the microhair-clasps showed a weak UV emission band centering at about 388 nm and wide green emissions around 525 nm. Field emission measurements demonstrated that the microhair-clasps with many sharp tips of several nanometers in curvature radius possessed good performance with a turn-on field of ∼1.5 V/μm and a threshold field of ∼4.3 V/μm.

This paper reports CuO straw-like nanostructures (nanostraws) synthesized on copper foil substrate through a simple solution method at room-temperature without using any template. The microstructure and morphological of CuO nanostraws were investigated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), revealing that the straw-like nanostructures were exhibited the nanocrystalline nature with monoclinic structure and monodispersed in large quantity. The possible growth mechanism for the formation of CuO nanostraws products was discussed in detail. In addition magnetic properties and field emission properties of as-obtained products were also investigated.

Large-scale CuO honeycombs were synthesized via two-step electrochemical deposition. The morphology and crystal structure of the as-grown CuO honeycombs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction and transparent electron microscopy. From the SEM images, we can find that the honeycombs were composed of well-oriented nanowires. The formation mechanism of the nanostructures was discussed. Field emission (FE) measurements demonstrated that the CuO honeycombs possessed good performance with a turn-on field of 6?7?V??m?1 and a field enhancement factor of 1361, which have promising application as a competitive cathode material in FE microelectronic devices. Due to the high surface-to-volume ratio, the humidity sensitive characteristic of the CuO honeycomb film has been investigated, which exhibits that it also has potential application in an effective and high performance humidity sensor.

A novel method was developed for synthesizing SnO2 zigzag nanobelts on a silicon substrate with the assistance of CuO powder. The crystalline structure and morphology of SnO2 zigzag nanobelts were characterized using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The growth habits and formation mechanism of the obtained SnO2 zigzag nanobelts were discussed in detail based on a series of experimental results. The optical property was evaluated by room temperature photoluminescence spectra. Field emission properties of SnO2 zigzag nanobelts was measured for the first time leading to good performance with a turn-on field of 1.9 V µm−1 and a threshold field of 5.1 V µm−1.
