1. Problem-Based Learning in the Irish SME Workplace

Abstract

Purpose: This paper aims to explore how in Irish small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), problem-based learning (PBL) could possibly provide a paradigm which addresses two key research objectives: What are the learning needs and challenges faced by Irish SMEs? and How could PBL satisfy these needs through integrating formal and informal learning? Design/Methodology/Approach: An action research methodology was adopted using Lewin's (1994) action research cycle. In the reconnaissance stage, surveys and focus groups were conducted with a purposive research sample of Irish SMEs regarding their learning needs and challenges. Based on these results, a plan was formulated to adapt the traditional PBL model into a workplace PBL model (wPBL). Lastly, the wPBL model was implemented and evaluated in 42 SMEs. Findings: The research identified several specific learning needs for SMEs, namely, learning that is cost-effective, tailored to the company and its challenges, immediately applied, demonstrates a tangible outcome (is measurable), organically fostering a learning culture, addresses knowledge gaps, continuous, develops communication, team work, problem-solving and technical skills. The traditional PBL model was adapted into a wPBL model to meet the above learning needs of SMEs. It was found that the wPBL model had the potential to address long-standing company problems (making it cost-effective), facilitate continuous learning and develop horizontal and transversal skills such as problem-solving and communication. Originality/Value: Much of the learning that takes place in SMEs is incidental or informal, and often does not contribute to the long-term sustainability of the organisation. This paper aims to propose a practical framework using wPBL to structure incidental and informal learning in SMEs so that it provides an immediate benefit to the company. To date, there has been little research into the application of PBL outside higher education, and the paper proposes a framework to assist the transition of PBL to a workplace environment.

3. Transitioning from Traditional to Problem-Based Learning in Management Education: The Case of a Frontline Manager Skills Development Programme

Abstract

Education providers experiment with different pedagogical strategies that depart from traditional modes of delivery. Problem-based learning (PBL), which enhances and leverages practitioners' competencies and skill-sets, is one such strategy. Transitioning to PBL can prove challenging for course design teams. This paper provides evidence-based insights into this transition by detailing how a management development programme for 10 frontline managers transitioned from traditional to pilot PBL delivery. Drawing on the six stages identified in the transition, and empirical data on the student experience, five conclusions on managing the transition to PBL were identified: (1) critical involvement and input of stakeholders external to the course design team; (2) need to adapt PBL for institutional, discipline and cohort fit; (3) importance of preparing the student cohort to cope with the inherent tensions of PBL; (4) managing their potential demands for additional control; (5) clarification of opportunity and resource costs that arise from implementing PBL.

Abstract

Purpose: This paper explores the experience of students and facilitators of Enquiry/Problem-Based Learning (E/PBL) as it transitioned online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: This two-phased mixed-methods sequential explanatory design study targeted academic staff and students engaged in online E/PBL during COVID-19 restrictions. The experience of enforced transition to online provision of E/PBL was examined in terms of the impact of digital tools on curriculum delivery and student perception of online E/PBL. In Phase 1, academic staff (n=21) and students (n= 67) responded to a survey that explored use of digital tools and experiences of online E/PBL. In Phase 2, academic staff (n=6) and students (n=2) participated in focus groups which were designed to elicit current and retrospective perspectives of the transition to online E/PBL. Results: Findings revealed that a number of digital tools were beneficial in assisting the delivery of online E/PBL. However, challenges were experienced by both facilitators and students with respect to technological competence and variance in IT access. Student responses suggested that communication barriers, inherent to the online environment, impacted on interactivity, which resulted in more active input being required from facilitators to promote student engagement. Most respondents revealed that they became increasingly comfortable in the online environment despite initial reservations, and that some changes in practice can help overcome limitations of digital tools. Conclusion: Engaging in online E/PBL presented diverse views amongst both facilitators and students on how best to support transition to student-centred learning and teaching methodology online. Recommendations from this study highlight the need for digital and technological training to enhance facilitator competence and the importance of building rapport, structure activities, and promote social cohesion amongst learners. 6. A problem-based learning approach to teaching frontline management skills

Abstract

Problem-based Learning (PBL) has arguably made the most significant contribution to pedagogy since the early 1960s. However, despite its large-scale implementation in the medical and engineering domains, few management schools have incorporated PBL into their curriculum. Business schools have been heavily criticised for prioritising theory at the expense of a real?world application of management skills development, and Chief Executive Officers now call for a balance between theory and practice which properly equips both full- and part-time students with the necessary management skills to make them job-ready. However, business school academia remains divided about how best to deliver management education. Some favour academic rigour wherein skills are delivered in the classroom; others argue that such skills are better developed in the workplace; while a third group regards each of the former as overly constricted. This thesis therefore adopts a hybrid approach which combines a cycle of self-directed learning and skills development in both classroom and workplace. This study aims to determine whether the 9-step PBL cycle developed by the Researcher, wherein participants undertake four different roles, can assist Frontline Managers (FLMs) to better develop the management skills identified in the Cameron and Whetten Management Skills Inventory. The study participants comprised 10 FMLs attending for university one day per month over a single academic year, as part of the Certificate in Management (CIM) programme at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Skills development is captured using mixed methods. Quantitative data are collected through structured observation incorporating a Behaviourally Anchored Rating Scale (BARS), and qualitative data gathered through tutorial documentation, self- and peer-assessment, reflective learning journals, audio/video reflections, and a focus group. Findings from this study support the contention that PBL is an effective way to teach management skills and role development. When measured using BARS against the Cameron and Whetten Management Skills Inventory, all participants’ skills management improved. Certain PBL roles were found more beneficial in developing particular management skills. A key contribution relates to the introduction of a PBL pedagogical model to teach management skills and role development in a business setting. This process entails 13 specific practices which are fully integrated across the entire PBL 9-step process. Practices can be broadly sub-divided into structural practices (P1-P7) and skills-promoting practices (P8-P13). In the structural categories, practice P5 emphasises the importance of exercising the tutorial skill when back in the workplace; evidence of which is presented in the FLMs’ Reflective Learning Journals and elaborated in the Thesis. Practice P6 promotes the importance of role rotation in the tutorial process and focuses on the skills development of FLMs as they operate in the different roles. Skills-promoting practices (P8-P13) include practice P9 (developing communication skills) as drawn from the Cameron and Whetten inventory. This examines the development of FLMs’ ability to confidently articulate their own position and beliefs while delivering information in a simple, comprehensible manner. The workplace value of the newly identified skills P11 (develop research skills) and P12 (facilitate multitasking skills) requires further enquiry since they fall beyond the scope of the Cameron and Whetten skills inventory. Finally, the study elucidates the tutorial process and practices needed to properly prepare part-time FLMs for the workplace, wherein learning occurs by assuming various roles, collaborating in a classroom setting, and applying CIM skills in the workplace to solve a set of problems.

Abstract

peer-reviewed With a focus on addressing the perceived skills gap in Software Engineering (SE) graduates, some educators have looked to employing alternative teaching and learning strategies in the classroom. One such pedagogy is Problem-Based Learning (PBL), an approach the authors have incorporated into the SE curriculum in two separate third-level institutions in Ireland, namely the University of Limerick (UL) and the National College of Ireland (NCI). PBL is an approach to teaching and learning which is quite different to the more typical “lecture” style found in most 3rd level institutions. PBL allows lecturers to meet educational and industry-specific objectives; however, while it has been used widely in Medical and Business schools, its use has not been so widespread with computing educators. PBL is not without its difficulties given that it requires significant changes in the role of the lecturer and the active participation of the students. Here, the authors present the approach taken to implement PBL into their respective programs. They present the pitfalls and obstacles that needed to be addressed, the levels of success that have been achieved so far, and briefly discuss some of the important aspects that Software Engineering lecturers should consider.

This convergent parallel design mixed methods case study was conducted at the Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick in a Problem-based Learning (PBL) Certificate in Management (CIM) programme consisting of ten managers. This empirical research aimed to investigate and evaluate the development of ten management skills and four PBL roles in a tutorial process using a multi-phase convergent parallel design. This paper argues that mixed methods research is an accepted addition to conventional qualitative and quantitative research. It considers pragmatism a desirable philosophical companion for mixed methods and provides a framework for designing and conducting mixed methods research. Finally, it outlines how this mixed methods design contributes to high quality research and aids the answering of research questions. In addition, software quality is a topic that is becoming increasingly important both because of educational and industry requirements. Software engineering lecturers need to bring their research into the classroom. Bringing all of these together can pose the lecturer with a dilemma that is not easily solvable. This paper presents how problem-based learning, a pedagogical methodology that is popular in medicine and other disciplines, can be used to accomplish these goals in a single course module. It describes a research project which analyses the implementation of problem-based learning within a M.Sc. Software engineering quality module, and evaluates the outcomes against published expectations.

Problems are central to learning in Problem Based Learning (PBL) curricula. Problem typologies differ across disciplinary areas and high quality problems are fundamental to engaging students and achieving the intended learning outcomes. PBL continues to be deployed in a range of disciplines; however, outside of the medical domain, there is a chronic lack of documented problems. This paucity has particular implications for those aspiring to adopt PBL, especially those who lack faculty support and may be acting on their own initiative. New York City Comptroller, William Thompson Jr., took time off from his busy schedule to take a property tour of the real estate development projects of the Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement (HCCI) with the HCCI president and chief executive officer, Lucille McEwen. Meeting at Victory One Senior Housing, located on Fifth Avenue and 118th Street, Thompson, accompanied by his assistant William Haslip, toured the first of the scheduled facilities. From there the group, which included the HCCI head of real estate, Ben Upshaw; Greg Watson, HCCI chief operating officer; and Pat Stevens of the Harlem Community News, boarded a bus which took them to the Angelou Court Cooperative Apartments. Continuing north the bus traveled along 148th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues, an entire block that was previously abandoned and is now being completely rehabilitated. The final stop on the tour was 150th Street and Eighth Avenue at the HCCI Intel Clubhouse and Computer Center.
