Collection: Cursos e Congresos_CCS; 152 [Abstract] The 6th International Workshop on Rock Physics (6IWRP) was held A Coruña, Spain, between 13th and 17th of June, 2022. This meeting follows the track of the five successful encounters held in Golden (USA, 2011), Southampton (UK, 2013), Perth (Australia, 2015), Trondheim (Norway, 2017) and Hong Kong (China, 2019). The aim of the workshop was to bring together experiences allowing to illustrate, discuss and exchange recent advances in the wide realm of rock physics, including theoretical developments, in situ and laboratory scale experiments as well as digital analysis. While rock physics is at the core of the oil & gas industry applications, it is also essential to enable the energy transition challenge (e.g. CO2 and H2 storage, geothermal), ensure a safe and adequate use of natural resources and develop efficient waste management strategies. The topics of 6IWRP covered a broad spectrum of rock physics-related research activities, including: • Experimental rock physics. New techniques, approaches and applications; Characterization of the static and dynamic properties of rocks and fluids; Multiphysics measurements (NMR, electrical resistivity…); Deep/crustal scale rock physics. • Modelling and multiscale applications: from the lab to the field. Numerical analysis and model development; Data science applications; Upscaling; Microseismicity and earthquakes; Subsurface stresses and tectonic deformations. • Coupled phenomena and rock properties: exploring interactions. Anisotropy; Flow and fractures; Temperature effects; Rock-fluid interaction; Fluid and pressure effects on geophysical signatures. • The energy transition challenge. Applications to energy storage (hydrogen storage in porous media), geothermal resources, energy production (gas hydrates), geological utilization and storage of CO2, nuclear waste disposal. • Rock physics templates: advances and applications. Quantitative assessment; Applications to reser voir characterization (role of seismic wave anisotropy and fracture networks). • Advanced rock physics tools. Machine learning; application of imaging (X-ray CT, X-ray μCT, FIB-SEM…) to obtain rock proper ties. This book compiles more than 50 abstracts, summarizing the works presented in the 6IWRP by rock physicists from all over the world, belonging to both academia and industry. This book means an updated overview of the rock physics research worldwide.

Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect effects of temperature were the main drivers of the spatial distribution in the toxins produced by the cyanobacterial community, the toxin concentrations and toxin quota. Generalized linear models showed that a Toxin Diversity Index (TDI) increased with latitude, while it decreased with water stability. Increases in TDI were explained through a significant increase in toxin variants such as MC-YR, anatoxin and cylindrospermopsin, accompanied by a decreasing presence of MC-LR. While global warming continues, the direct and indirect effects of increased lake temperatures will drive changes in the distribution of cyanobacterial toxins in Europe, potentially promoting selection of a few highly toxic species or strains., Postprints der Universität Potsdam : Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Reihe; 1105

The majority of microplastic research has focused on seawater, with fewer than 4% of microplasticsrelated studies occurring on freshwaters. The limited available information suggests that the abundance of microplastics in freshwaters is often as high or even higher than marine environments. However, comprehensive investigations on occurrence and fate of microplastics in freshwaters are scarce and highly fragmented, partly because detection and identification of microplastic particles is rather complex. In addition, up to now, harmonized and standardized protocols for the sampling and analysis of microplastics in freshwaters do not exist, and studies with different research aims and hypotheses often report unstandardized results, making comparison among studies difficult. In the present study, we performed the first global standardized sampling and analysis effort to investigate the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in surface water of lakes and reservoirs with different anthropogenic impacts. Participants aim to collect water samples of freshwater systems with different features (e.g., area, depth, thermal behavior, watershed), following a common protocol. This 18 establishes the collection of samples by horizontal trawling of a plankton net and, after treatment with hydrogen peroxide, the polymer identification through micro-Raman spectroscopy. This GLEON project will allow obtaining comparable data about microplastic contamination in different freshwater systems around the globe. situ Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect effects of temperature were the main drivers of the spatial distribution in the toxins produced by the cyanobacterial community, the toxin concentrations and toxin quota. Generalized linear models showed that a Toxin Diversity Index (TDI) increased with latitude, while it decreased with water stability. Increases in TDI were explained through a significant increase in toxin variants such as MC-YR, anatoxin and cylindrospermopsin, accompanied by a decreasing presence of MC-LR. While global warming continues, the direct and indirect effects of increased lake temperatures will drive changes in the distribution of cyanobacterial toxins in Europe, potentially promoting selection of a few highly toxic species or strains.

Under ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic activity, which continuously challenge ecosystem resilience, an in-depth understanding of ecological processes is urgently needed. Lakes, as providers of numerous ecosystem services, face multiple stressors that threaten their functioning. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a persistent problem resulting from nutrient pollution and climate-change induced stressors, like poor transparency, increased water temperature and enhanced stratification. Consistency in data collection and analysis methods is necessary to achieve fully comparable datasets and for statistical validity, avoiding issues linked to disparate data sources. The European Multi Lake Survey (EMLS) in summer 2015 was an initiative among scientists from 27 countries to collect and analyse lake physical, chemical and biological variables in a fully standardized manner. This database includes in-situ lake variables along with nutrient, pigment and cyanotoxin data of 369 lakes in Europe, which were centrally analysed in dedicated laboratories. Publishing the EMLS methods and dataset might inspire similar initiatives to study across large geographic areas that will contribute to better understanding lake responses in a changing environment. - Abstract
To determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass, we collected standardized morphometric, physical, and biological data in 230 lakes across the Mediterranean, Continental, and Boreal climatic zones of the European continent. Multilinear regression models tested on this snapshot of mostly eutrophic lakes (median total phosphorus [TP] = 0.06 and total nitrogen [TN] = 0.7 mg L−1), and its subsets (2 depth types and 3 climatic zones), show that light climate and stratification strength were the most significant explanatory variables for chlorophyll a(Chl a) variance. TN was a significant predictor for phytoplankton biomass for shallow and continental lakes, while TP never appeared as an explanatory variable, suggesting that under high TP, light, which partially controls stratification strength, becomes limiting for phytoplankton development. Mediterranean lakes were the warmest yet most weakly stratified and had significantly less Chl athan Boreal lakes, where the temperature anomaly from the long‐term average, during a summer heatwave was the highest (+4°C) and showed a significant, exponential relationship with stratification strength. This European survey represents a summer snapshot of phytoplankton biomass and its drivers, and lends support that light and stratification metrics, which are both affected by climate change, are better predictors for phytoplankton biomass in nutrient‐rich lakes than nutrient concentrations and surface temperature.

Granular materials submitted to uniaxial compression undergo pore space reduction due to mechanisms such as particle rearrangement and grain crushing. These changes in the internal structure of the material release energy in the form of elastic waves that can be detected by sensors sensitive to acoustic emission. In this study, Acoustic emission monitoring with a wavelet‐based signal processing technique is used to identify the various mechanisms occurring during high‐pressure sand compaction. Particle movement, grain failure, friction between grains and the surface of the compression cell and intergranular friction are studied. Acoustic emission data recorded during these simplified tests are used to characterize each phenomenon. Wavelet transform analyses allow the identification of useful features, making possible frequency discrimination among sliding, rolling, friction and grain fragmentation processes. For instance, we observe that at low stress, grain flow is characterized by the lowest centroid and peak frequencies, while at greater stresses, intergranular friction and grain fragmentation have the higher values. In the tests performed, the stress–strain evolution and final condition of the tested sand are broadly consistent, irrespective of the condition employed: continuous, stepwise or even variable loading rate or temperature. However, Acoustic emission data manifest much more complex behaviour (including thermal, load‐rate dependency and delayed fragmentation phenomena) than that suggested by stress–strain relationships. At low stress levels, grain flow (sliding/rolling) is a relevant strain‐accommodation mechanism, but so is crushing due to the effect of concentrated forces at the grain contact level. At high stresses, when crushing is generalized, intergranular friction is also a relevant phenomenon due to the increase in the coordination number produced by previous fragmentation. Accurate and reliable prediction of groundwater level is a critical component in coastal water management. It is important to find a suitable model with acceptable accuracy. This paper presents a comparative study with seasonal decomposition method of time series analysis and GM (1,1) method, which are applied to test the model accuracy by simulating groundwater levels of two representative wells located at a coastal aquifer in Fujian Province, South China. The average monthly groundwater level was monitored during 2006-2011, the data set from 2006-2010 was used for model establishment, and that of 2011 used for predicting the dynamic change of groundwater level. The results indicate that the multiplicative model fits better than the additive model for seasonal decomposition method. Finally, the effectiveness of the model and prediction accuracy was evaluated based on root mean square error (RMSE) and regression coefficient (R²). From the obtained results, it is concluded that the GM (1,1) method can be a promising tool to simulate and forecast groundwater level and serve as an alternative physically based model. KIC is an intrinsic material property that represents the ability of a material containing a pre-existing defect to resist tensile failure. The International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) has proposed four suggested methods for determining KIC. However, these methods present some drawbacks. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a simple testing approach, called pseudo-compact tension (pCT) test, to measure KIC in rocks using cylindrical single edge-notched specimens loaded in pure tension. The study is based on the results of a large set of fracture toughness experiments performed with different rock types, sample sizes, and a range of notch length ratios. The KIC values derived with the pCT test are compared with those obtained with one of the suggested methods of the ISRM, the semi-circular bend (SCB) test. Some selected pCT and SCB tests were also complemented with the concurrent monitoring of the acoustic emission (AE) activity. With the obtained data, we compare and analyse both testing methods, the effects of specimen size, notch length and lithology, the mechanical evolution along the experiments and the significance of different AE parameters. [Resumen] La tenacidad de fractura en modo I (KIC) es uno de los parámetros más importantes en la mecánica de fractura aplicada a rocas. KIC es una propiedad intrínseca del material que representa su capacidad para resistir su rotura a tracción en la presencia de un defecto preexistente. La Sociedad Internacional para la Mecánica de Rocas (ISRM) ha sugerido cuatro métodos para determinar KIC, pero todos presentan algunos inconvenientes. El principal objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar un método de ensayo simple, llamado ‘pseudo-compact tensión’ (pCT), para determinar KIC en rocas mediante muestras cilíndricas ensayadas bajo condiciones de tracción pura. El estudio se basa en los resultados de un número de ensayos llevados a cabo con distintos tipos de roca, tamaños de probeta y longitudes de entalla. O almacenamento xeolóxico de CO2 é a etapa final do proceso de captura, transporte e almacenamento de CO2, consistente en inxectar CO2 nunha formación xeolóxica profunda. Dita inxección garda relación coa preocupación do papel que os gases de efecto invernadoiro poden ter sobre o clima. O obxectivo fundamental radica en obter información sobre o comportamento hidromecánico e xeoquímico das rocas a través do seguimento simultáneo de parámetros relevantes (deformacións, variacións na permeabilidade, indicadores xeofísicos, etc.). El objetivo fundamental radica en obtener información sobre el comportamiento hidromecánico y geoquímico de las rocas a través del seguimiento simultáneo de parámetros relevantes (deformaciones, variaciones en permeabilidad, indicadores geofísicos, etc.) Se tienen en consideración los siguientes hitos: a) Diseño, definición y puesta en marcha del sistema experimental. b) Obtención de resultados. c) Interpretación cualitativa y cuantitativa de los resultados El dispositivo experimental utilizado sobre el que construye el ensayo de inyección es la celda triaxial, con platos diseñados para la aplicación de presión de poro y propagación de ondas. Adicionalmente se realizó el estudio de análisis frecuencias de ondas P, S1 y S2, así como una batería de ensayos geomecánicos (triaxiales, comprensión simple y tracción directa e indirecta) con el objetivo de caracterizar el material previamente a ser ensayado., [Abstract] This research work has its origins on the need to find solutions to increased emissions of harmful gases to the environment. CO2 storage is the final stage of capture, transport and storage of CO2 process. This process involves the injection of CO2 in deep geological formations. That injection is directly related to the concern that greenhouse gases would have on climate. The main objective is obtaining information about hydromecanic and geochemical behaviour of rocks through the simultaneous monitoring of relevant parameters (deformation, permeability variations, geophysical indicators, etc.). The following milestones are taken into consideration: a) Design, definition and implementation of the experimental system. b) Obtainment of results. c) Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of results The experimental device used on building the injection test is the triaxial cell, with plates designed for the application of pore pressure and wave propagation. Additionally a frequency analysis study for P, S1 and S2 waves was performed, as well as a set of geomechanical tests (triaxial, simple compression, direct and indirect traction). These tests were performed in order to characterize the material before being tested.

[Resumen] Las características particulares de las grandes explotaciones a cielo abierto de la minería metálica y de la minería del carbón, que originan huecos de grandes dimensiones, hacen que la única opción, viable, razonable y sostenible de rehabilitación del espacio directamente afectado por la excavación sea su inundación, dando lugar a los llamados “lagos de mina”. Esta solución no está exenta, en principio, de complicaciones; sin embargo, hay que destacar que actualmente se conocen diferentes métodos y técnicas de tratamiento para controlar y mejorar la calidad de las aguas de estas masas, lo que hace que la transformación de los huecos de explotación en lagos ofrezca la oportunidad de poner en valor el paisaje minero a través de nuevas opciones de uso sostenible del suelo. El objeto del presente trabajo, que se presenta como tesis doctoral, es demostrar que la formación de lagos mineros no es sólo una solución ambiental eficaz y óptima para la restauración de las explotaciones a cielo abierto, sino que además constituye una solución a otras problemáticas de la ordenación del territorio, en particular la relativa a la gestión de los recursos hídricos y la planificación hidrológica, poniendo de manifiesto la importancia del plan de restauración del espacio afectado por las actividades mineras como instrumento jurídico preventivo de gestión sostenible y planificación del territorio a corto y largo plazo, integrado de manera efectiva en el sistema de planes ambientales que ordenan de manera directa el uso del suelo. En este estudio se ha realizado un examen directo de los aspectos científicos, tecnológicos, administrativos, jurídicos y sociales relacionados con la formación de lagos mineros para concluir definiendo el marco de actuación y las bases adecuadas con las que mejorar la creación sostenible, la regeneración efectiva y el uso futuro a largo plazo de estas masas de agua artificiales, sujetas a la aplicación de la Directiva Marco del Agua., [Abstract] The particular characteristics of the big developments to sky opened of the metallic mining industry and of the mining industry of the coal, which there originate hollows of big dimensions, do that the only option, viable, reasonable and sustainable of rehabilitation of the space directly affected by the excavation it is his flood, giving place to so called "lakes of mine". This solution is not exempt, at first, from complications; nevertheless, it is necessary to emphasize that nowadays different methods and technologies of treatment are known to control and to improve the quality of the waters of these masses, which does that the transformation of the hollows of exploitation in lakes offers the opportunity to put in value the mining landscape across new options of sustainable use of the soil. The object of the present work, which one presents as doctoral thesis, is to demonstrate that the formation of mining lakes is not only an environmental effective and ideal solution for the restoration of the developments to opened sky, but in addition a solution constitutes problematic others of the land management, especially the relative one to the management of the water resources and the hydrological planning, revealing the importance of the plan of restoration of the space affected by the mining activities as juridical preventive instrument of sustainable management and planning of the territory in the short and long term, integrated in an effective way in the system of environmental plans that arrange in a direct way the use of the soil. [Resumen] La industria de la piedra ornamental constituye uno de los principales sectores económicos de Galicia. En especial destaca la producción granitera del municipio de O Porriño, que genera la mitad de la producción total de la región. El serrín de granito es el residuo resultante de los procesos de corte y pulido de los bloques de roca y supone anualmente en la zona una cantidad cercana a los 300.000 m3 dadas las buenas expectativas del mercado de la roca ornamental es interesante hallar una aplicación para el uso de estos materiales, a ser posible en grandes cantidades como en obras civiles. Tras realizar una completa caracterización básica, se realizaron ensayos geotécnicos, en los que se obtuvieron resultados satisfactorios en lo relativo a aplicaciones en la estabilidad de taludes (ángulo de rozamiento) e impermeabilización (permeabilidad en edómetros). Tambien se realizaron simulaciones para algunas aplicaciones. Según los resultados, los serrines de granito son un buen material de préstamo para la construcción de rellenos. Tambien parece razonable usarlos como material de terraplen de obras lineales, pudiendo ejecutarse terraplenes de altura moderada con asientos reducidos y sin limitaciones en el proceso constructivo. La experiencia con serrines de granito sugiere que pueden ser buenos materiales para estabilizar y mejorar suelos, desde un punto de vista geotécnico

[Abstract] Landfill closure and reclamation is both a regional and an international problem. The waterproofing performance of the cover layer has a capital importance when considering the prevention of pollution and its propagation towards the natural environment. In that context, the use of waste fine materials derived from industrial processes emerges as an alternative to the more conventional geosynthetics. Being that the starting point, our approach represents a sustainable waste management alternative, as well as also being environmental friendly. The research work presented in this document is aimed at studying the feasibility of the use of the waste fine material produced by the dimension stone cutting and polishing industries (an important economic activity in the southern part of Galicia) also known as “granite saw dust”. Our work is focused on the use of granite saw dust as raw materials for the construction of landfill cover/capping layers or to construct impervious substrates acting as sealing barriers.. Our work is based on previous studies and characterization and we have tried to verify the behavior of granite saw dust in the context of civil works at scales larger than those more conventional in the laboratory. By using small-scale experimental set ups we have highlighted the selected geotechnical and geochemical properties. Our experimental models have been designed according to a comprehensive methodological approach and were developed using the best instrumentation available to us. That let us to obtain a varied bundle of information related to the studied problem: i) the geochemical evolution of granite saw dust as a result of their interaction with water and air; ii) the hydrodynamic behavior of the material under prescribed conditions of compaction and water content; iii) alternatives for the configuration of hydrodynamic barriers to cope with inflows. For this purpose, four small-scale column tests with granite saw dusts have been performed. These columns were instrumented to monitor, in real time, the behavior of the saw dust under the previously specified test conditions. The huge amount of information provided by the experiments has contributed to a detailed analysis of different problems covering hydrochemical, hydrodynamic and/or mineralogical aspects. The column experiments have highlighted that, in relation to their use as a waterproofing and sealing barrier, the hydraulic properties of granite fines, were poorer that those estimated by other authors using conventional geotechnical tests. By recognizing the hydraulic limitation of the granite saw dust, we tried to improve its performance combining them with sand layers in order to make up a capillary barrier. This test was executed with a large -scale model which was specifically designed and built to study the hydrodynamic behavior of fine material barriers in a nearly field scale. The large size and robustness of the experimental device (for which a patent has been granted) allowed us to use conventional mechanical compaction devices typically used in earth works (e.g. vibratory or tamping rammers), reaching optimum compaction values. The experimental device was equipped with an automated irrigation system (which allowed the establishment of realistic rainfall conditions) and a number of transducers to monitor the moisture content of the fines. The results obtained suggest that granite fines, arranged as a continuous layer, do not meet the requirements necessary for the construction of soil barriers for waterproofing and/or sealing landfills. However, with a capillary barrier configuration (i.e. combining layers of granite saw dust and sand) resulted in a good performance in terms of the permeability prescribed for seal/cover layers for inert waste landfill. Accordingly, such a configuration would be worth for this use. The use of granite fines as mineral barriers for waterproofing and/or sealing landfills, or for any other purposes, would contribute in adding value to inert waste, providing it with a sustainable use and positively contributing to the chain value of dimension stone., [Resumo] O peche e selado de vertedoiros sanitarios é un problema de nivel rexional e internacional. A eficacia da impermeabilización, así do contorno como da capa de selado da superficie, é de vital importancia na prevención da contaminación e a súa propagación ó medio receptor. O emprego de materiais finos residuais de procesos industriais como unha opción frente a outros materiais sintéticos (por exemplo, xeotéxtiles ou xeomembranas) constitúe unha alternativa sostible para a xestión de residuos e respectuosa co medio ambiente. A investigación presentada nesta memoria ten como principal obxectivo o estudo da viabilidade do uso dun material fino xerado pola industria produtora e transformadora do granito en Galicia (serraduras de granito) para o seu uso como materia prima para a construción de barreiras de impermeabilización e/ou selado. Na mesma, preténdese verificar o comportamento das serraduras de granito no contexto da obra civil ó nivel de actuación real sobre o terreo, empregando modelos experimentais a escala reducida que poñen en evidencia as súas propiedades xeotécnicas e xeoquímicas, amplamente caracterizadas nos últimos anos través de procedementos normalizados de uso convencional no campo da enxeñaría civil. Os modelos experimentais foron deseñados de acordo cunha ampla formulación metodolóxica e desenvolvidos empregando a instrumentación dispoñible máis axeitada, de modo que permitisen obter información de natureza diversa en relación co problema estudado: i) a evolución xeoquímica das serraduras de granito como resultado da súa interacción coa auga e o aire; ii) o comportamento hidrodinámico do material baixo condicións específicas de alternativas de compactación e hidratación; iii) alternativas de configuración como unha barreira física para controlar o fluxo de infiltración. Para isto, desenvolvéronse ata catro ensaios de columnas de serraduras de dimensións reducidas. Ditas columnas foron dotadas de equipos para levar un seguimento en tempo real do comportamento das serraduras nas condicións de ensaio prescritas. Os deseños experimentais permitiron reunir unha importante cantidade de información pertinente o problema investigado, contribuíndo á análise en profundidade de distintos problemas de índole hidroxeoquímica, hidrodinámica e/ou mineralóxica. Os ensaios en columna puxeron en evidencia que as propiedades hidráulicas das serraduras de granito, en relación ó seu uso como unha barreira de impermeabilización e selado, contrastan coas observadas por outros autores a partir de ensaios xeotécnicos convencionais. Recoñecendo as limitacións hidráulicas do material, inténtase mellorar o seu rendemento empregando unha configuración con base nas propiedades das barreiras capilares. Este ensaio materializouse na forma dun modelo reducido construído ex profeso para investigar o comportamento hidromecánico de barreiras de materiais finos a escala case real. As dimensións e robustez do dispositivo experimental (obxecto dunha patente), permitiron o uso de máquinas de compactación habituais en enxeñaría civil (por exemplo, bandexas vibrantes), alcanzando condicións óptimas de compactación. O dispositivo foi equipado cun sistema de irrigación automatizado (simulando as condicións realistas de precipitación) e diferentes sensores para o control da humidade do material ensaiado. Os resultados obtidos suxiren que as serraduras de granito, dispostas en forma dunha capa continua de material, non cumpren cos requisitos para a construción de barreiras minerais de impermeabilización e/ou selado de vertedoiros. Con todo, a configuración de barreira capilar (combinando capas minerais de serraduras e area) demostrou producir un efecto de oposición ó fluxo de infiltración, no que a permeabilidade equivalente resulta inferior ó límite máximo esixido para o confinamento de vertedoiros de residuos inertes, polo que o seu uso en tales contextos sería apropiado. O emprego das serraduras de granito como barreira mineral para a impermeabilización e/ou selado de vertedoiros ou con outros fins, permitiría valorizar un residuo inerte, dándolle un uso sostible e contribuíndo positivamente na cadea de valor da pedra ornamental.

34. Desarrollo de un tratamiento de estabilización sobre los residuos de fuel del Prestige : posibilidades de almacenamiento definitivo del resíduo estabilizado y potencial uso como material de construcción

[Resumen] El Prestige vertió 63.000 t de fuel pesado frente a las costas gallegas en una de las peores ma-reas negras acaecidas en Europa. Las tareas de recuperación de residuos se realizaron en el mar y también en la costa obteniendo residuos muy diferentes. En el mar se recuperaba una emul-sión de agua y fuel, sin embargo en el litoral, dada la extensión del vertido y la necesidad de trabajo manual, el residuo producido era una mezcla de fuel, agua, arena, rocas, bolsas plásticas, herramientas de limpieza, etc. De este modo, aunque sólo se recuperaron 43.000 t de fuel la can-tidad de residuos generada fue muy superior, 170.000 t. El objetivo de esta investigación es encontrar soluciones para el tratamiento y gestión del residuo generado por el vertido del Prestige. Es un residuo muy heterogéneo y presenta además una textura líquido-viscosa. Esta última propiedad imposibilita el vertido directo por prohibi-ción expresa de la Directiva 1999/31 de vertederos. Las técnicas de tratamiento de un residuo tan heterogéneo son limitadas, además existían unas pruebas satisfactorias de aplicación de una técnica de estabilización/solidificación con cal viva. Por estas razones se planteó el tratamiento de los residuos mediante estabilización, en este sentido se ha desarrollado una metodología de estabilización que utiliza no sólo cal viva, sino también serrín de granito, un subproducto del corte de piedra. Gracias a la sustitución de parte de la cal por serrín de granito se mejora el mezclado y se abaratan mucho los costes de estabili-zación. La proporción de mezcla más adecuada es una de 30 % de residuo de fuel, 35 % de cal viva y 35 % serrín de granito. Con estas proporciones se obtiene un residuo sólido de textura pulverulenta que puede ser fácilmente manipulado. Tras el proceso de estabilización el residuo es sólido y presenta buenas características geo-técnicas y además, en virtud de los ensayos de lixiviación, recibiría una clasificación de no peli-groso según la legislación vigente. Por tanto, sería posible construir un vertedero para el depósito definitivo del residuo estabilizado. Se ha considerado también la utilización de los residuos estabilizados como áridos para morteros de cemento, no por que el fuel mejore sus propiedades, sino como una vía para el reci-claje del residuo. Se ha conseguido fabricar morteros que emplean residuo estabilizado como árido, alcanzando un 12 % de fuel en masa. La inclusión del fuel empeora las resistencias aun-que mejora la resistencia al hielo-deshielo. La calidad de los morteros con fuel es aceptable para muchas aplicaciones, y esto combinado con una buena resistencia a la helada haría posible su utilización en elementos prefabricados no estructurales destinados a tráficos ligeros, tales como adoquines prefabricados

[Resumen] La industria del granito constituye uno de los pilares de la economía gallega. El aumento en la producción de granito elaborado lleva aparejado el aumento en la producción de serrines. Por ello, alcanzar un equilibrio sostenible entre la actividad comercial del sector y la preservación del medio ambiente, de acuerdo con las normativas europeas, constituye actualmente un objetivo fundamental. Este estudio trata de responder a tres de las expectativas básicas que el sector granitero ha planteado: 1. La caracterización del material en vista a su catalogación como tipo de residuo (inerte o no). 2. El estudio de la viabilidad práctica de usos potenciales de los serrines. 3. Un análisis y la caracterización del material teniendo en cuenta sus eventuales usos. Esta tesis presenta los resultados obtenidos de la caracterización, centrándose en los aspectos de índole geoquímica así como en la evaluación de su comportamiento hidrodinámico. A tenor del volumen de serrines de granito anualmente generado en la comarca de O Porriño, es necesario buscar aplicaciones que requieran al mismo tiempo grandes volúmenes de material y pequeñas distancias de transporte. Esta investigación se ha centrado en la aplicación de los mismos como barrera de impermeabilización y/o sellado de vertedero., [Abstract] Dimension stone industry is one of the leading economic potentials of Galicia Our study tries to answer at three of the basic expectations that the granite industry sector has outlined. These questions also possess a particular interest for the Administration: 1. The classification and characterization of the fines like a type of residuals and how this affects to their classification (inert / not inert) in a more specific way: 2. The identification of intrinsic properties of the fines so that, starting from them, allow obtaining of the fines some economic profit or, at least, a better integration in the productive cycle of the natural (dimension) stone. 3. The identification and study of viable applications from the technical and economic points of view that allow an evaluation of these wastes, transforming them in by-products of the process. According to the volume of granite fines annually generated in the district of O Porriño, it is necessary to look for applications that require large material volumes and short transport distances at the same time (sustainability approach). - Abstract
Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect effects of temperature were the main drivers of the spatial distribution in the toxins produced by the cyanobacterial community, the toxin concentrations and toxin quota. Generalized linear models showed that a Toxin Diversity Index (TDI) increased with latitude, while it decreased with water stability. Increases in TDI were explained through a significant increase in toxin variants such as MC-YR, anatoxin and cylindrospermopsin, accompanied by a decreasing presence of MC-LR. While global warming continues, the direct and indirect effects of increased lake temperatures will drive changes in the distribution of cyanobacterial toxins in Europe, potentially promoting selection of a few highly toxic species or strains., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
