Introducción: El bruxismo es una conducta oral motora caracterizada por el apriete y rechinamiento dentario de manera rítmica, involuntaria y/o espasmódica. Su etiología ha sido muy debatida, considerándose una patología de carácter multifactorial. Objetivos: Establecer correlaciones entre el bruxismo y la presencia de trastornos temporomandibulares y determinar la influencia de las alteraciones oclusales en el bruxismo. Material y métodos: Estudio descriptivo, observacional y transversal. Se realizó un muestreo consecutivo no probabilístico por conveniencia del estudio, seleccionando una muestra de población accesible constituida por 60 sujetos bruxistas (36 mujeres y 24 hombres). El sujeto rellenó un formulario sobre datos sociodemográficos y diferentes cuestionarios respecto al nivel de estrés y ansiedad presentado, el uso de férulas y/o retenedores, el tipo y grado de bruxismo y la presencia o no de hábitos parafuncionales, entre otros. Por último, se evaluó la existencia de trastornos temporomandibulares (TTM) y clase de oclusión dental según Angle. Resultados: El bruxismo predominó en las mujeres con un 60% frente a los hombres, presentando un 76,7% bruxismo moderado-severo. Al analizar la correlación entre el bruxismo y la presencia TTM, se observó que un 76,7% de los sujetos con TTM presentaba bruxismo. En cuanto a la clase de oclusión dental, el 31,6% presentó una Clase I, el 66,7% una Clase II y un 1,7% una Clase III. En relación a los factores psicosociales, el 91,7% de los participantes presentó ansiedad y un 96,6% estrés. Conclusiones: El bruxismo supone un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de trastornos temporomandibulares, existiendo una elevada correlación entre ambos. Existe una gran influencia de las alteraciones oclusales dentales en sujetos bruxistas. Hay una evidente correlación entre el bruxismo y la presencia de un alto nivel de estrés y ansiedad.
