Osteoporotic (OP) fractures remain a tough clinical challenge owing to their impaired healing outcome, which requires novel biomaterials with osteogenicity for effective healing. Metallic zinc (Zn) is attracting increasing attention for biodegradable intramedullary nails (IMNs) for OP fracture healing thanks to their comprehensive mechanical properties, biosafety, and bioactivity. However, the multiple biofunctions required for OP fracture healing have not been fully met by Zn. Herein, a zoledronate (ZA)-mediated calcium-zinc silicate (Ca(Zn)Si) metal-organic/inorganic hybrid coating was fabricated on Zn-based IMN by coordination chemistry driven via interactions between ZA and Ca2+/Zn2+ as well as in-situ directional growth of Ca(Zn)Si phase. The ZA&Ca(Zn)Si hybrid coating exhibited a homogeneous micro/nanostructure with a granular morphology, which prevented premature fracture failure of IMN in rat femur by ameliorating corrosion mode and decreasing degradation rate of the Zn matrix. More importantly, this hybrid coating enabled sustained release of Zn2+/Ca2+/Si4+ and ZA in the long term, achieving a remarkable effect on vascularized bone regeneration. The coated IMN enhanced angiogenesis–osteogenesis coupling through autocrine and paracrine effects between endothelial cells and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. Osteoclastogenesis was repressed by Zn2+ and ZA. This approach offers a new strategy for surface-engineering of biodegradable metals for bone fracture healing.

Abstract Background Accumulating evidences have stressed the association between hypoxanthine phosphoribosyl transferase 1 (HPRT1) overexpression and the poor prognosis of various cancers. Our study, herein, preliminarily investigates the involvement of HPRT1 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods Data from TCGA were applied to read HPRT1 expression in diverse cancers including NPC and to predict the prognosis of NPC patients. The total RNA and protein from NPC cells and nasopharyngeal epithelial cells NP460 were extracted to quantify HPRT1 expression. Following the completion of transfection, the proliferation and migration of NPC cells were determined employing MTT, colony formation and western blot assay (the quantification on expressions of protein related to proliferation and migration). Results HPRT1 was differentially expressed in diverse cancers yet particularly highly expressed in NPC, and high HPRT1 expression was related to the poor prognosis of NPC patients. Also, HPRT1 expression was higher in NPC cells and its silencing diminished the viability and proliferation of NPC cells and reduced the expressions of CyclinD1, CyclinE, Multidrug Resistance Protein 1 (MDR1), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, and MMP-9. Conclusion This study preliminarily explored the involvement of HPRT1 in NPC based on some cellular assays in vitro, which may provide evidence for investigating the specific mechanism underlying the effects of HPRT1 in cancers.

Abstract Dental implant restoration shows an effective method for the rehabilitation of missing teeth. The failure rate of periodontal implants in patients with chronic periodontitis is associated with periodontal flora, inflammation, and long-term periodontal bone resorption caused by chronic periodontitis. However, the therapeutic effects of dental implant restoration on inflammation in patients with chronic periodontitis have not addressed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the risk indicators for inflammation, bone loss and implant failure in patients with chronic periodontitis. A total of 284 patients with dental implant restoration were recruited and divided into periodontally healthy patients (n = 128) and chronic periodontitis patients (n = 156). Periodontal indices including probing depth (PD), sulcus bleeding index (SBI), plaque index (PLI), gingival bleeding (GIL) and bleeding on probing (BOP) were compared in two groups. Inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1 (IL-1), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels at baseline, 6 and 12 months after surgery, and the implant survival rate at 12 months after surgery, as well as the risk factors associated with failure of dental implant were also assessed. Outcomes demonstrated that patients in the chronic periodontitis group had higher values of periodontal indices than those in the periodontally healthy group. All inflammatory parameters in the chronic periodontitis group were higher than those in the periodontally healthy group and negatively associated with the chronic periodontal index (CPI) in chronic periodontitis patients. Chronic periodontitis patients had higher the prevalence of mucositis and peri-implantitis than patients with healthy periodontium. Implant diameter, length and design was associated with the risk of implant failure for chronic periodontitis patients receiving dental implant. Background: Cannabidiol (CBD), extracted from Cannabis sativa, has anticancer, anti-inflammation, and analgesic effects. Nevertheless, its therapeutic effect and the mechanism by which it alleviates oral mucositis (OM) remain unclear. Aims: To explore the impact of CBD on OM in mice and on human oral keratinocyte (HOK) cells. Study Design: Expiremental study. Methods: The Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform, GeneCard, DisGeNET, and Gene Expression Omnibus databases were used to conduct therapeutic target gene screening for drugs against OM. Cytoscape software was used to build networks linking components, targets, and diseases. The STRING database facilitated analysis of intertarget action relationships, and the target genes were analyzed for Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment. Occurrence of serum inflammation-related factors, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and immunohistochemistry were used to assess OM injury. Cell proliferation, migration, pyroptosis, and apoptosis of HOK cells under different treatments were assessed. Molecular mechanisms were elucidated through western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. Results: A total of 49 overlapping genes were pinpointed as potential targets, with NF-κB1, PIK3R1, NF-κBIA, and AKT1 being recognized as hub genes among them. Additionally, the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB and interleukin-17 signaling pathways were identified as relevant. Our in vivo experiments showed that CBD significantly reduced the proportion of lesion area, mitigated oral mucosal tissue lesions, and downregulated the expression levels of genes and levels of proteins, including NLRP3, P65, AKT, and PI3K. In vitro experiments indicated that CBD enhanced HOK cell proliferation and migration and reduced apoptosis through inhibition of the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway and pyroptosis. Conclusion: Our findings suggest a novel mechanism for controlling OM, in which CBD suppresses the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway and pyroptosis, thereby mitigating OM symptoms.

Abstract Room‐temperature sodium‐sulfur (RT Na‐S) batteries are a promising next‐generation energy storage device due to their low cost, high energy density (1274 Wh kg−1), and environmental friendliness. However, RT Na‐S batteries face a series of vital challenges from sulfur cathode and sodium anode: (i) sluggish reaction kinetics of S and Na2S/Na2S2; (ii) severe shuttle effect from the dissolved intermediate sodium polysulfides (NaPSs); (iii) huge volume expansion induced by the change from S to Na2S; (iv) continuous growth of sodium metal dendrites, leading to short‐circuiting of the battery; (v) huge volume expansion/contraction of sodium anode upon sodium plating/stripping, causing uncontrollable solid‐state electrolyte interphase growth and “dead sodium” formation. Various strategies have been proposed to address these issues, including physical/chemical adsorption of NaPSs, catalysts to facilitate the rapid conversion of NaPSs, high‐conductive materials to promote ion/electron transfer, good sodiophilic Na anode hetero‐interface homogenized Na ions flux and three‐dimensional porous anode host to buffer the volume expansion of sodium. Heterostructure materials can combine these merits into one material to realize multifunctionality. Herein, the recent development of heterostructure as the host for sulfur cathode and Na anode has been reviewed. First of all, the electrochemical mechanisms of sulfur cathode/sodium anode and principles of heterostructures reinforced Na‐S batteries are described. Then, the application of heterostructures in Na‐S batteries is comprehensively examined. Finally, the current primary avenues of employing heterostructures in Na‐S batteries are summarized. Opinions and prospects are put forward regarding the existing problems in current research, aiming to inspire the design of advanced and improved next‐generation Na‐S batteries.

Abstract Background Insulin resistance (IR) and arthritis are strongly associated, and the triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index combinations with obesity indicators [including TyG–BMI (glucose triglyceride–body mass index), TyG–WC (glucose triglyceride–waist circumference), and TyG–WHtR (glucose triglyceride–waist height ratio)] has recently been recognized as a more effective indicator for assessing IR. However, there is a lack of research on its association with arthritis, and it is also important to assess in different populations. Methods The analysis utilized data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Arthritis diagnosis relied on self-reporting confirmed by physicians. The association of TyG–BMI, TyG–WC, and TyG–WHtR with arthritis was analyzed through weighted logistic regression models, and exploring nonlinear effects with restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. Secondary and sensitivity analyses included receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis, comparisons of z score-related odds ratios, subgroup analyses, and multiple imputation. Results The study involved 6141 CHARLS participants and 17,091 NHANES participants. Adjusting for confounding variables, TyG–BMI and TyG–WHtR demonstrate a positive correlation with arthritis prevalence in both CHARLS (TyG–BMI: OR = 1.02, 95% CI 1.00–1.04; TyG–WHtR: OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.03–1.24) and NHANES (TyG–BMI: OR = 1.07, 95% CI 1.06–1.08; TyG–WHtR: OR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.40–1.60). RCS regression analysis demonstrated a significant nonlinear association. ROC analysis indicated that TyG–BMI and TyG–WHtR were superior to TyG for the diagnosis of arthritis in both CHARLS and NHANES. Conclusions TyG–BMI and TyG–WHtR demonstrate a positive correlation with arthritis prevalence in both Chinese and the U.S. populations, displaying superior diagnostic relevance compared to TyG.

The introduction of three-dimensional (3D) printing scaffolds has emerged as an effective approach to achieving satisfactory revascularization for bone tissue engineering (BTE). However, there is a notable absence of analytical and descriptive investigations concerning the trajectory, essential research directions, current research scenario, pivotal investigative focuses, and forthcoming perspectives. Hence, the objective of this research is to offer a thorough overview of the advancements achieved in 3D printing structures for vascularized BTE within the last 10 years. Information extracted from the Web of Science repository spans from January 1, 2014, to April 1, 2024. Utilizing advanced analytical instruments, we conducted comprehensive scientometric and visual analyses. The findings underscore the predominant influence of China, representing 59.62 % of the overall publications and playing a pivotal role in shaping research within this field. Notable productivity was evident at various institutions, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Sichuan University. Wang Jinwu and Wu Chengtie stand out as the most prolific contributors in this domain. The highest number of publications in this area was contributed by the journal Advanced Healthcare Materials. In this study, osteogenesis imperfecta, osteosarcoma, fractures, osteonecrosis, and cartilage diseases were identified as the most significant disorders investigated in this research area. By providing a comprehensive scientometric assessment, this study benefits both experienced researchers and newcomers alike, offering prompt access to essential information and fostering the extraction of innovative concepts within this specific field.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a zoonotic disease caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), belonging to the Flaviviridae family. Diagnosis of Japanese encephalitis (JE) based on clinical signs alone is challenging due to the high proportion of subclinical cases. The Plaque Reduction Neutralization Test (PRNT) is considered the gold standard for detecting JE-specific antibodies because of its high specificity. However, PRNT is complex, time-consuming, and requires live viruses, limiting its applicability in routine diagnostics. In this study, we compared the sensitivity and correlation of the Hemagglutination Inhibition (HI) assay and PRNT for detecting JE antibodies in avian serum samples. We conducted a comparative analysis of the outcomes obtained from the PRNT and HI using 240 serum samples collected from 30 JEV-immunized avian subjects at various time points. Comparative analysis revealed a significant correlation between the HI and PRNT (R2 = 0.9321, p ≤ 0.0001). The Bland–Altman analysis also exhibited favorable concordance between the two assays. Consequently, HI may function as a viable substitute for PRNT in the screening of a substantial number of serum samples.

Summary: Ferroptosis is implicated in several diseases, including iron overload-induced osteoarthritis (IOOA), which is marked by oxidative stress, iron imbalance, and lipid peroxidation. Given rosiglitazone’s (RSG) ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis, this study aims to assess its therapeutic potential for treating IOOA. Our in vitro results show that RSG targets acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 to mitigate impairments induced by interleukin-1 beta and ferric ammonium citrate, including cell apoptosis, senescence, inflammatory responses, extracellular matrix degradation, and ferroptosis. RSG reduced intracellular iron content, alleviated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, mitigated damage to membrane-bound organelles, and enhanced glucose transport. Additionally, pre-treatment with RSG imparted anti-ferroptotic properties to chondrocytes. In vivo, RSG alleviated cartilage degradation, inflammatory responses, and ferroptosis in mice with IOOA. In conclusion, RSG exhibits chondroprotective and anti-ferroptotic effects by suppressing lipid peroxidation and restoring iron homeostasis, highlighting its potential for treating IOOA.

ObjectiveNotable progress has been made in “ferroptosis-based nano drug delivery systems (NDDSs)” over the past 11 years. Despite the ongoing absence of a comprehensive scientometric overview and up-to-date scientific mapping research, especially regarding the evolution, critical research pathways, current research landscape, central investigative themes, and future directions.MethodsData ranging from 1 January 2012, to 30 November 2023, were obtained from the Web of Science database. A variety of advanced analytical tools were employed for detailed scientometric and visual analyses.ResultsThe results show that China significantly led the field, contributing 82.09% of the total publications, thereby largely shaping the research domain. Chen Yu emerged as the most productive author in this field. Notably, the journal ACS Nano had the greatest number of relevant publications. The study identified liver neoplasms, pancreatic neoplasms, gliomas, neoplasm metastases, and melanomas as the top five crucial disorders in this research area.ConclusionThis research provides a comprehensive scientometric assessment, enhancing our understanding of NDDSs focused on ferroptosis. Consequently, it enables rapid access to essential information and facilitates the extraction of novel ideas in the field of ferroptotic nanomedicine for both experienced and emerging researchers.

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has presented new challenges and opportunities for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), aiming to provide objective assessments and improve clinical effectiveness. However, there is a lack of comprehensive analyses on the research trajectory, key directions, current trends, and future perspectives in this field. This research aims to comprehensively update the progress of AI in TCM over the past 24 years, based on data from the Web of Science database covering January 1, 2000, to March 1, 2024. Using advanced analytical tools, we conducted detailed bibliometric and visual analyses. The results highlight China's predominant influence, contributing 54.35 % of the total publications and playing a key role in shaping research in this field. Significant productivity was observed at institutions such as the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with Wang Yu being the most prolific contributor. The journal Molecules contributed the most publications in this field. This study identified hepatocellular carcinoma, chemical and drug-induced liver injury, Papillon-Lefèvre disease, Parkinson's disease, and anorexia as the most significant disorders researched. This comprehensive bibliometric assessment benefits both seasoned researchers and newcomers, offering quick access to essential information and fostering the generation of innovative ideas in this field.

Abstract Background Active hydrothermal vents create extreme conditions characterized by high temperatures, low pH levels, and elevated concentrations of heavy metals and other trace elements. These conditions support unique ecosystems where chemolithoautotrophs serve as primary producers. The steep temperature and pH gradients from the vent mouth to its periphery provide a wide range of microhabitats for these specialized microorganisms. However, their metabolic functions, adaptations in response to these gradients, and coping mechanisms under extreme conditions remain areas of limited knowledge. In this study, we conducted temperature gradient incubations of hydrothermal fluids from moderate (pH = 5.6) and extremely (pH = 2.2) acidic vents. Combining the DNA-stable isotope probing technique and subsequent metagenomics, we identified active chemolithoautotrophs under different temperature and pH conditions and analyzed their specific metabolic mechanisms. Results We found that the carbon fixation activities of Nautiliales in vent fluids were significantly increased from 45 to 65 °C under moderately acidic condition, while their heat tolerance was reduced under extremely acidic conditions. In contrast, Campylobacterales actively fixed carbon under both moderately and extremely acidic conditions under 30 − 45 °C. Compared to Campylobacterales, Nautiliales were found to lack the Sox sulfur oxidation system and instead use NAD(H)-linked glutamate dehydrogenase to boost the reverse tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) cycle. Additionally, they exhibit a high genetic potential for high activity of cytochrome bd ubiquinol oxidase in oxygen respiration and hydrogen oxidation at high temperatures. In terms of high-temperature adaption, the rgy gene plays a critical role in Nautiliales by maintaining DNA stability at high temperature. Genes encoding proteins involved in proton export, including the membrane arm subunits of proton-pumping NADH: ubiquinone oxidoreductase, K+ accumulation, selective transport of charged molecules, permease regulation, and formation of the permeability barrier of bacterial outer membranes, play essential roles in enabling Campylobacterales to adapt to extremely acidic conditions. Conclusions Our study provides in-depth insights into how high temperature and low pH impact the metabolic processes of energy and main elements in chemolithoautotrophs living in hydrothermal ecosystems, as well as the mechanisms they use to adapt to the extreme hydrothermal conditions. Abstract Citrate is a key metabolite and nutrient in humans. Its level is associated with many diseases from tumor growth to bone diseases. Detection of citrate has relied on its high negative charge, metal chelating properties and as an enzyme substrate. In this work, the capture‐selection method is used to isolate DNA aptamers for citrate. After 18 rounds of selection, a highly converged library is obtained and the first two sequences reached 99.6% of the library. Using the most abundant sequence named CA1, thioflavin T fluorescence spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry show dissociation constants of 7.4 and 4.4 µm citrate, respectively. CA1 does not require sodium for binding but requires 1.0 mm magnesium. Among the tested carboxylate molecules, only citrate can bind to the aptamer. A light‐up fluorescence strand displacement biosensor is developed and it can detect citrate in simulated urine with a detection limit of 1.1 µm. This short 42‐nucleotide aptamer can be readily adapted to other types of sensing mechanisms for the detection of citrate.

Abstract Introduction Livestock overgrazing represents one of the most destructive uses of land in terrestrial ecosystems and threatens biodiversity. However, understanding the effects of livestock overgrazing on below‐ground soil microbial diversity is limited, despite soil microbes representing the majority of biodiversity and determining ecosystem functioning. Materials and Methods To investigate the effects of overgrazing on soil microbial richness, a long‐term grazing exclusion experiment was conducted at six sites including three meadow steppes and three typical steppes in northern China. Results Our results revealed that overgrazing decreased bacterial and fungal richness across temperate steppes in northern China, and the biome could regulate the overgrazing effects, especially for fungal richness. Specifically, the negative effects of overgrazing on microbial richness were highly significant in typical steppes while not significant in meadow steppes that contained higher plant diversity and precipitation. Partial least‐squares path model showed that overgrazing affected soil microbial richness in highly complex ways, and the affected pathways were different in meadow steppes and typical steppes. The direct negative effects of grazing and their indirect negative effects via soil properties resulted in a significant decrease in microbial richness in typical steppes. In meadow steppes, the indirect beneficial effects via plant attributes offset the direct negative effects of grazing. Consequently, the soil microbial community in meadow steppe resisted overgrazing disturbance. Conclusion Our study illuminates the complex and highly biome‐dependent grazing effects and pathways on soil microbiota and indicates that meadow steppe may be more resistant or resilient to human disturbance than typical steppe. These findings suggest that different grasslands might be managed differently considering their intrinsic characteristics to help biodiversity conservation. Moreover, future research should focus on the underlying mechanisms of grazing effects on soil microbial richness. Besides grazing‐induced plant and soil traits changes, other potential pathways could strongly influence soil microbial diversity.

Numerical modeling of acoustic-elastic media is helpful for seismic exploration in the deepwater environment. We propose an algorithm based on the staggered grid finite difference to simulate wave propagation in the interface between fluid and transversely isotropic media, where the interface does not need to consider the boundary condition. We also derive the stability conditions of the proposed method. Scholte waves, which are generated at the seafloor, exhibit distinctly different propagation behaviors than body waves in ocean-bottom seismograms. Numerical examples are used to characterize the wavefield of Scholte waves and discuss the relationship between travel time and the Thomsen parameters. Thomsen parameters are assigned clear physical meanings, and the magnitude of their values directly indicates the strength of the anisotropy in the media. Numerical results show that the velocity of the Scholte wave is positively correlated with ε and negatively correlated with δ. And the curve of the arrival time of the Scholte wave as a whole is sinusoidal and has no symmetry in inclination. The velocity of the Scholte wave in azimuth is positively related to the polar angle. The energy of the Scholte wave is negatively correlated with the distance from the source to the fluid-solid interface. The above results provide a basis for studying oceanic Scholte waves and are beneficial for utilizing the information provided by Scholte waves.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling and highly prevalent condition affecting millions worldwide. Recently discovered, disulfidptosis represents a novel form of cell death induced by the excessive accumulation of cystine. Despite its significance, a systematic exploration of disulfidptosis-related genes (DRGs) in OA is lacking. Methods: This study utilized three OA-related datasets and DRGs. Differentially expressed (DE)-DRGs were derived by intersecting the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from GSE114007 with DRGs. Feature genes underwent screening through three machine learning algorithms. High diagnostic value genes were identified using the receiver operating characteristic curve. Hub genes were confirmed through expression validation. These hub genes were then employed to construct a nomogram and conduct enrichment, immune, and correlation analyses. An additional validation of hub genes was performed through in vitro cell experiments. Results: SLC3A2 and PDLIM1 were designated as hub genes, displaying excellent diagnostic performance. PDLIM1 exhibited low expression in early chondrocyte differentiation, rising significantly in the late stage, while SLC3A2 showed high overall expression, declining in the late differentiation stage. Cellular experiments corroborated the correlation of SLC3A2 and PDLIM1 with chondrocyte inflammation. Conclusions: Two hub genes, SLC3A2 and PDLIM1, were identified in relation to disulfidptosis, providing potential directions for diagnosing and treating OA.

This study introduces a novel multi-channel predictive deconvolution method enhanced by Shearlet-based sparse regularization, aimed at improving the accuracy and stability of subsurface seismic imaging, particularly in offshore wind farm site assessments. Traditional multi-channel predictive deconvolution techniques often struggle with noise interference, limiting their effectiveness. By integrating Shearlet transform into the multi-channel predictive framework, our approach leverages its directional and multiscale properties to enhance sparsity and directionality in seismic data representation. Tests on both synthetic and field data demonstrate that our method not only provides more accurate seismic images but also shows significant resilience to noise, compared to conventional methods. These findings suggest that the proposed technique can substantially improve geological feature identification and has great potential for enhancing the efficiency of seabed surveys in marine renewable energy development.

Abstract Intra-articular injection of therapeutics is an effective strategy for treating osteoarthritis (OA), but it is hindered by rapid drug diffusion, thereby necessitating high-frequency injections. Hence, the development of a biofunctional hydrogel for improved delivery is required. In this study, we introduce a liposome-anchored teriparatide (PTH (1–34)) incorporated into a gallic acid-grafted gelatin injectable hydrogel (GLP hydrogel). We show that the GLP hydrogel can form in situ and without affecting knee motion after intra-articular injection in mice. We demonstrate controlled, sustained release of PTH (1–34) from the GLP hydrogel. We find that the GLP hydrogel promotes ATDC5 cell proliferation and protects the IL-1β-induced ATDC5 cells from further OA progression by regulating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Further, we show that intra-articular injection of hydrogels into an OA-induced mouse model promotes glycosaminoglycans synthesis and protects the cartilage from degradation, supporting the potential of this biomaterial for OA treatment.

Highlights Fundamental principles for designing highly efficient two-electron oxygen reduction reaction catalysts are briefly reviewed. Strategies to integrate the components into an efficient device for hydrogen peroxide production are discussed. The challenges and perspectives for catalyst and cell design are discussed.

Objective Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has been successfully adopted for the improvement of medical quality and efficacy in many diseases, but the effect thereof for ankle fracture patients can vary. The aim of the present study was to explore the short‐term postoperative outcomes of ERAS among ankle fracture patients. Methods The present study was a retrospective cohort study conducted between January 2019 and May 2019. One hundred and sixty ankle fracture participations (58 males and 102 females, aged 41.71 ± 14.51 years) were included. The participants treated with open reduction and internal fixation were divided into two groups (non‐ERAS vs. ERAS) depending on whether ERAS was applied. Postoperative outcomes included American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, length of stay (LOS), hospital cost, complications, and consumption of opioids. To assess the association between the groups and outcomes, generalized estimating equation (GEE) modeling and multivariable linear regression analysis were performed. Results The average follow‐up periods of the participations were 24 months postoperatively. No significant differences were detected between the non‐ERAS group and ERAS group with respect to the demographic of patients in terms of gender, age, Danis‐Weber classification of fracture, dislocation of ankle joint, and comorbidity (P > 0.05). Significant differences in terms of a higher AOFAS score were found in the ERAS group compared with the non‐ERAS group (6.73, 95% CI, 5.10–8.37, p 0.05) and at 24 months postoperatively (PO24M) (0.56, 95% CI, −0.07 to 1.19, P > 0.05). Abstract Background Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a successful treatment for many hip diseases. Length of stay (LOS) and hospital cost are crucial parameters to quantify the medical efficacy and quality of unilateral primary THA patients. Clinical variables associated with LOS and hospital costs haven’t been investigated thoroughly. Methods The present study retrospectively explored the contributors of LOS and hospital costs among a total of 452 unilateral primary THA patients from January 2019 to January 2020. All patients received conventional in-house rehabilitation services within our institute prior to discharge. Outcome parameters included LOS and hospital cost while clinical variables included patient characteristics and procedural variables. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to assess the association between outcome parameters and clinical variables by controlling confounding factors. Moreover, we analyzed patients in two groups according to their diagnosis with femur neck fracture (FNF) (confine THA) or non-FNF (elective THA) separately. Results Among all 452 eligible participants (266 females and 186 males; age 57.05 ± 15.99 year-old), 145 (32.08%) patients diagnosed with FNF and 307 (67.92%) diagnosed with non-FNF were analyzed separately. Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and prevalent degenerative joint disease characterized by degradation of the articular cartilage. However, none of disease-modifying OA drugs is approved currently. Teriparatide (PTH (1–34)) might stimulate chondrocyte proliferation and cartilage regeneration via some uncertain mechanisms. Relevant therapies of PTH (1–34) on OA with such effects have recently gained increasing interest, but have not become widespread practice. Thus, we launch this systematic review (SR) to update the latest evidence accordingly. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, and Embase from their inception to February 2022. Studies investigating the effects of the PTH (1–34) on OA were obtained. The quality assessment and descriptive summary were made of all included studies. Overall, 307 records were identified, and 33 studies were included. In vivo studies (n = 22) concluded that PTH (1–34) slowed progression of OA by alleviating cartilage degeneration and aberrant remodeling of subchondral bone (SCB). Moreover, PTH (1–34) exhibited repair of cartilage and SCB, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In vitro studies (n = 11) concluded that PTH (1–34) was important for chondrocytes via increasing the proliferation and matrix synthesis but preventing apoptosis or hypertrophy. All included studies were assessed with low or unclear risk of bias in methodological quality. The SR demonstrated that PTH (1–34) could alleviate the progression of OA. Moreover, PTH (1–34) had beneficial effects on osteoporotic OA (OPOA) models, which might be a therapeutic option for OA and OPOA treatment.

Objective: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a highly prevalent musculoskeletal disorder characterized by degeneration of cartilage and abnormal remodeling of subchondral bone (SCB). Teriparatide (PTH (1–34)) is an effective anabolic drug for osteoporosis (OP) and regulates osteoprotegerin (OPG)/receptor activator of nuclear factor ligand (RANKL)/RANK signaling, which also has a therapeutic effect on KOA by ameliorating cartilage degradation and inhibiting aberrant remodeling of SCB. However, the mechanisms of PTH (1–34) in treating KOA are still uncertain and remain to be explored. Therefore, we compared the effect of PTH (1–34) on the post-traumatic KOA mouse model to explore the potential therapeutic effect and mechanisms. Methods: In vivo study, eight-week-old male mice including wild-type (WT) (n ​= ​54) and OPG−/− (n ​= ​54) were investigated and compared. Post-traumatic KOA model was created by destabilization of medial meniscus (DMM). WT mice were randomly assigned into three groups: the sham group (WT-sham; n ​= ​18), the DMM group (WT-DMM; n ​= ​18), and the PTH (1–34)-treated group (WT-DMM ​+ ​PTH (1–34); n ​= ​18). Similarly, the OPG−/− mice were randomly allocated into three groups as well. The designed mice were executed at the 4th, 8th, and 12th weeks to evaluate KOA progression. To further explore the chondro-protective of PTH (1–34), the ATDC5 chondrocytes were stimulated with different concentrations of PTH (1–34) in vitro. Results: Compared with the WT-sham mice, significant wear of cartilage in terms of reduced cartilage thickness and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) loss was detected in the WT-DMM mice. PTH (1–34) exhibited cartilage-protective by alleviating wear, retaining the thickness and GAG contents. Moreover, the deterioration of the SCB was alleviated and the expression of PTH1R/OPG/RANKL/RANK were found to increase after PTH (1–34) treatment. Among the OPG−/− mice, the cartilage of the DMM mice displayed typical KOA change with higher OARSI score and thinner cartilage. The damage of the cartilage was alleviated but the abnormal remodeling of SCB didn't show any response to the PTH (1–34) treatment. Compared with the WT-DMM mice, the OPG−/−-DMM mice caught more aggressive KOA with thinner cartilage, sever cartilage damage, and more abnormal remodeling of SCB. Moreover, both the damaged cartilage from the WT-DMM mice and the OPG−/−-DMM mice were alleviated but only the deterioration of SCB in WT-DMM mice was alleviated after the administration of PTH (1–34). In vitro study, PTH (1–34) could promote the viability of chondrocytes, enhance the synthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) (AGC, COLII, and SOX9) at the mRNA and protein level, but inhibit the secretion of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6). Conclusion: Both wear of the cartilage was alleviated and aberrant remodeling of the SCB was inhibited in the WT mice, but only the cartilage-protective effect was observed in the OPG−/− mice. PTH (1–34) exhibited chondro-protective effect by decelerating cartilage degeneration in vivo as well as by promoting the proliferation and enhancing ECM synthesis of chondrocytes in vitro. The current investigation implied that the rescue of the disturbed SCB is dependent on the regulation of OPG while the chondro-protective effect is independent of modulation of OPG, which provides proof for the treatment of KOA. The translational potential of this article: Systemic administration of PTH (1-34) could exert a therapeutic effect on both cartilage and SCB in different mechanisms to alleviate KOA progression, which might be a novel therapy for KOA.

Abstract Salicylic acid (SA) is a hydrolysis product and an active form of aspirin, and SA is found in a range of fruits and other food products. For food and drug and analysis there is a strong desire to detect SA. Since SA is a very small molecule, aptamers have advantages over antibodies for its detection. In this work, we used the library‐immobilization capture‐SELEX method to isolate aptamers for SA. After 17 rounds of selection, two main families of aptamers were isolated. The SA1 aptamer from family 1 has a Kd of 5.8 μM from a thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence assay and 26.7 μM from isothermal titration calorimetry. The binding of other sequences was weaker compared to SA1. Based on mutation studies, the two conserved regions of SA1 were connected by two stems. Using ThT as a stain, a label‐free fluorescent sensor was tested for the detection of SA with a detection limit of 2.2 μM. A few similar molecules were tested including aspirin, and only p‐hydroxybenzoic acid showed a weak binding, indicating the high specificity of the SA1 aptamer. Finally, the SA1 aptamer was also tested in tomato juice and a similar binding performance was achieved.

Seismic interferometry is a key technology in geophysical exploration, having achieved significant developments in constructing virtual seismic responses, overcoming the limitation of traditional exploration. However, non-physical reflections in virtual-shot gathers pose challenges for data processing and interpretation. This study focuses on deghosting in virtual-shot gather data processing. We propose a novel method that integrates sparse and nuclear norm constraint inversion for multi-shot simultaneous deghosting. Initially, a pseudo 3D data cube is created to enhance computational efficiency and lay the foundation for subsequent continuity regularization. Subsequently, an inversion framework is constructed to improve deghosting precision and stability by combining sparse and nuclear norm constraint inversion. Both synthetic and field examples demonstrate the superiority of our method, offering a new paradigm for virtual-shot gather data processing, and representing a major advancement in overcoming the inherent limitations of seismic interferometry.

Abstract Fear of predation can affect important ecosystem processes by altering the prey traits expression that, in turn, regulates the quantity and quality of nutritional inputs to soil. Here, we aimed to assist in bridging a knowledge gap in this cascading chain of events by exploring how risk of spider predation may affect grasshopper prey performances, and the activity of various microbial extracellular enzymes in the soil. Using a mesocosms field‐experiment, we found that grasshoppers threatened by spider predation ate less, grew slower, and had a higher body carbon to nitrogen ratio. Herbivory increased activity of all microbial extracellular enzymes examined, likely due to higher availability of root exudates. Predation risk had no effect on C‐acquiring enzymes but decreased activity of P‐acquiring enzymes. We found contrasting results regarding the effect of predation on the activity of N‐acetyl‐glucosaminidase and leucine arylamidase N‐acquiring enzymes, suggesting that predation risk may alter the composition of N‐inputs to soil. Our work highlighted the importance of soil microbial enzymatic activity as a way to predict how changes in the aboveground food‐web dynamics may alter key ecosystem processes like nutritional‐cycling.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the serum D-dimer level and its diagnostic and prognostic predictive value in patients with different types of aortic dissection. Methods Eighty-four aortic dissection patients who were diagnosed clinically in our hospital from January 2017 to January 2021 were selected for the study. All patients were divided into Stanford type A (39 cases) and Stanford type B (45 cases) groups. The serum D-dimer level was detected at 1 h, 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, and 72 h after admission to the hospital, and its expression level with different types of aortic dissection was analyzed. The relationship between D-dimer and the prognosis of patients was also analyzed. Results The serum D-dimer levels of patients in group A were significantly higher than those in group B at 6 h, 12 h, 24 h, and 72 h after admission, and the differences were statistically significant. In group A, 16 patients died, and 23 patients survived, while in group B, 18 patients died, and 27 patients survived. The serum D-dimer level of the dead and surviving patients in group A was significantly higher than that of group B, and the serum D-dimer level of dead patients in groups A and B was significantly higher than that of surviving patients. For diagnostic value, the AUC was 0.89, sensitivity was 76.92%, specificity was 90.00% in group A, and the AUC was 0.82, sensitivity was 71.11%, and specificity was 85.00% in group B. For the prognostic predicted value, the AUC was 0.74 in group A, while the AUC was 0.69 in group B. Conclusions D-dimer has different serum levels in different types of aortic dissection patients, with higher levels in Stanford A. Serum D-dimer levels may be used as a better biomarker to diagnose the two types of aortic dissection and play an important role in patient prognostic prediction, especially Stanford type A.

Osteoporotic fractures are induced by osteoporosis, which may lead to the degradation of bone tissues and microstructures and impair their healing ability. Conventional internal fixation therapies are ineffective in the treatment of osteoporotic fractures. Hence, developing tissue engineering materials is crucial for repairing osteoporotic fractures. It has been demonstrated that nanomaterials, particularly graphene oxide (GO), possess unique advantages in tissue engineering due to their excellent biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and osteoinductive abilities. Based on that, GO-nanocomposites have garnered significant attention and hold promising prospects for bone repair applications. This paper provides a comprehensive insight into the properties of GO, preparation methods for nanocomposites, advantages of these materials, and relevant mechanisms for osteoporotic fracture applications.

In marine seismic exploration, seismic signals comprise primaries that undergo first-order scattering, as well as multiples resulting from multi-order scattering events. Surface-related multiples involve multi-order scattering at the free surface interface between seawater and air and exhibit a smaller reflection angle and broader illumination compared to primaries. Internal multiples, originating from multi-order scattering among stratified layers, provide additional illumination compensation beneath the reflecting interface. However, in conventional primary migration, different-order wavefields may result in crosstalk artifacts. To address this issue, we developed a least-squares migration (LSM) method based on the multi-order wavefield global normalization condition. This methodology investigates the illumination effects and crosstalk artifacts associated with different-order surface-related and internal multiples, and then modifies the global normalization condition by incorporating an illumination compensation perspective. Virtual sources, represented by surface-related multiples and internal multiples, are integrated into the source compensation term, ultimately yielding a multi-order wavefield normalization condition. This normalization condition is subsequently combined with least-squares full-wavefield migration (LSFWM). Numerical experiments demonstrate that the normalization condition of multi-order wavefields can resolve the problem of weak deep imaging energy and promote the suppression of multiple crosstalk artifacts in the least-squares algorithm.

IntroductionSoil extracellular enzymes are central in terrestrial ecosystem responses to climate change, and their research can be crucial for assessing microbial nutrient demand. However, the effects of climate-induced precipitation patterns on soil microbial nutrient demand in different soil profiles of agroecosystems are rarely studied.MethodsHere, we present how the precipitation gradient affects soil enzymes related to carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling and identified microbial nutrient limitation determinants at five depth intervals (0–10, 10–20, 20–30, 30–40, and 40–50 cm) in seven agroecosystems.Results and DiscussionWe found that N- and P-acquiring enzymes have a tendency to decrease or increase, respectively, but C-acquiring enzymes did not change along the precipitation gradient throughout soil profiles. Soil pH and moisture were the most important factors affecting the enzyme activity in 0–50 cm. Our results also revealed a crucial soil boundary (at 20 cm) that differentiated responses of microbial nutrient limitation to precipitation changes. In the topsoil (0–20 cm), the stoichiometry of soil nutrients did not vary with precipitation. Microbial P limitation was exacerbated with increased precipitation, which was controlled by soil pH and moisture in the topsoil. In contrast, in the subsoil (20–50 cm), soil nutrient stoichiometry decreased with increasing precipitation, and microbial C and P limitation displayed a positive correlation with precipitation. Furthermore, microbial P limitation tended to be stronger in the subsoil than in the topsoil along the precipitation gradient. Microbial C and P limitation was regulated by the soil nutrients and their stoichiometry in the subsoil. Our study is an essential step in soil enzyme activity and stoichiometry response to precipitation in agroecosystems and provides novel insights into understanding microbial nutrient limitation mechanisms in soil profiles along the precipitation gradient.

Purpose: This research aims to investigate whether increasing the pension contributions of a firm leads to inefficient investments. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the 26 135 observations of the Chinese listed firms, this study employs ordinary least squares models to investigate the relationship between pension costs and inefficient investments. Findings/results: This study shows that Chinese listed firms’ pension contribution increments result in fewer investment opportunities and a decreased in investment efficiency. This is insignificant for the more profitable firms and state-owned enterprises. It suggests further that a firm’s pension cost is significantly associated with its investment inefficiency, particularly for cash flow dominated and financing–restricted firms. This indicates a negative association between pension contributions and cash flows, and several pension contributions may lead to a cash flow shortage in the firms. Practical implications: For managers, they should improve their investment efficiency within an affordable pension plan; for investors, increasing pension costs potentially decrease their investment returns. Originality/value: Some findings have reference values for some developing countries.

BackgroundSmad7 is protective in a mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis. Here we investigated whether Smad7-expressing CD4+ T cells and the methylation of Smad7 gene in CD4+ T cells contribute to the disease activity of RA in patients.MethodsPeripheral CD4+ T cells were collected from 35 healthy controls and 57 RA patients. Smad7 expression by CD4+ T cells were determined and correlated with the clinical parameters of RA including RA score and serum levels of IL-6, CRP, ESR, DAS28-CRP, DAS28-ESR, Swollen joints and Tender joints. Bisulfite sequencing (BSP-seq) was used to determine the DNA methylation in Smad7 promoter (-1000 to +2000) region in CD4+ T cells. In addition, a DNA methylation inhibitor, 5-Azacytidine (5-AzaC), was added to CD4+ T cells to examine the possible role of Smad7 methylation in CD4+ T cell differentiation and functional activity.ResultsCompared to the heath controls, Smad7 expression was significantly decreased in CD4+ T cells from RA patients and inversely correlated with the RA activity score and serum levels of IL-6 and CRP. Importantly, loss of Smad7 in CD4+ T cell was associated with the alteration of Th17/Treg balance by increasing Th17 over the Treg population. BSP-seq detected that DNA hypermethylation occurred in the Smad7 promoter region of CD4+ T cells obtained from RA patients. Mechanistically, we found that the DNA hypermethylation in the Smad7 promoter of CD4+ T cells was associated with decreased Smad7 expression in RA patients. This was associated with overreactive DNA methyltransferase (DMNT1) and downregulation of the methyl-CpG binding domain proteins (MBD4). Inhibition of DNA methylation by treating CD4+ T cells from RA patients with 5-AzaC significantly increased Smad7 mRNA expression along with the increased MBD4 but reduced DNMT1 expression, which was associated with the rebalance in the Th17/Treg response.ConclusionDNA hypermethylation at the Smad7 promoter regions may cause a loss of Smad7 in CD4+ T cells of RA patients, which may contribute to the RA activity by disrupting the Th17/Treg balance.

In this study, we analyzed the spatial and seasonal distributions of ten species of benthic macrofauna and 12 water environmental parameters at thirty-six sampling stations in the subtidal zone near the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant. The results showed that there were four types of distribution characteristics for 10 species of macrobenthic animals and 12 water environmental factors near the Daya Bay nuclear power plant: (1) three species of benthic macrofauna, namely Apionsoma (Apionsoma) trichocephalus, Amphioplus (Lymanella) laevis, and P. bidentata, and six water environmental parameters, including water depth, salinity, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, chromium, and lead increased from inside the bay to outside the bay. (2) Three species of benthic macrofauna, P. cristata, T. lata, and T. scabra, and four water environmental parameters, including oils, arsenic, total phosphorus, and silicate, decreased from inside to outside the bay. (3) Two species of benthic macrofauna, A. dibranchis, and P. undulatus and one water environmental parameter, pH, were higher in the central bay than inside and outside the bay. (4) One species of benthic macrofauna, Sigambra hanaokai, and one water environmental parameter, total nitrogen, were lower in the central bay than inside and outside the bay. Correlation and BIO-ENV analyses confirmed that water depth was the main environmental factor affecting the ten species of benthic macrofauna. Understanding the distributions of the dominant benthic macrofauna could help protect nuclear cold source systems from benthic macrofaunal blockage and explore marine ecosystem connectivity.

Abstract Large herbivores often co‐occur and share plant resources with herbivorous insects in grassland ecosystems; yet, how they interact with each other remains poorly understood. We conducted a series of field experiments to investigate whether and how large domestic herbivores (sheep; Ovis aries) may affect the abundance of a common herbivorous insect (aphid; Hyalopterus pruni) in a temperate grassland of northeast China. Our exclosure experiment showed that 3 years (2010–2012) of sheep grazing had led to 86% higher aphid abundance compared with ungrazed sites. Mechanistically, this facilitative effect was driven by grazing altering the plant community, rather than by changes in food availability and predator abundance for aphids. Sheep significantly altered plant community by reducing the abundance of unpalatable forbs for the aphids. Our small‐scale forb removal experiment revealed an “associational plant defense” by forbs which protect the grass Phragmites australis from being attacked by the aphids. However, selective grazing on forbs by sheep indirectly disrupted such associational plant defense, making P. australis more susceptible to aphids, consequentially increasing the density of aphids. These findings provide a novel mechanistic explanation for the effects of large herbivores on herbivorous insects by linking selective grazing to plant community composition and the responses of insect populations in grassland ecosystems.

Interconnectivity is the key characteristic of bone tissue engineering scaffold modulating cell migration, blood vessels invasion and transport of nutrient and waste. However, efforts and understanding of the interconnectivity of porous Mg is limited due to the diverse architectures of pore struts and pore size distribution of Mg scaffold systems. In this work, biomimetic hierarchical porous Mg scaffolds with tailored interconnectivity as well as pore size distribution were prepared by template replication of infiltration casting. Mg scaffold with better interconnectivity showed lower mechanical strength. Enlarging interconnected pores would enhance the interconnectivity of the whole scaffold and reduce the change of ion concentration, pH value and osmolality of the degradation microenvironment due to the lower specific surface area. Nevertheless, the degradation rates of five tested Mg scaffolds were no different because of the same geometry of strut unit. Direct cell culture and evaluation of cell density at both sides of four typical Mg scaffolds indicated that cell migration through hierarchical porous Mg scaffolds could be enhanced by not only bigger interconnected pore size but also larger main pore size. In summary, design of interconnectivity in terms of pore size distribution could regulate mechanical strength, microenvironment in cell culture condition and cell migration potential, and beyond that it shows great potential for personalized therapy which could facilitate the regeneration process.

Based on cognitive theory, we investigated the influence of executives’ ESG cognition on corporate green innovation using data from Chinese manufacturing listed companies from 2010 to 2019. The paper first constructs a metric of ESG cognition of company executives by presenting a quantitative analysis of data from their personal microblogs using textual analysis. The findings show that executive ESG perceptions significantly improve corporate green innovation. After addressing the endogeneity issue through a series of robustness tests, the findings of this paper still held true. Further research found that the enhancement effect of executive ESG perceptions on firms’ green innovation level was mainly found in the sample without heavy pollution and with lower financing constraints and a higher marketization process. This study makes an important contribution to the research on corporate green innovation based on the perspective of executive ESG cognition while also providing a theoretical basis and practical reference for corporate green innovation practices.

Osteonecrosis occurs when, under continuous stimulation by adverse factors such as glucocorticoids or alcohol, the death of local bone and marrow cells leads to abnormal osteoimmune function. This creates a chronic inflammatory microenvironment, which interferes with bone regeneration and repair. In a variety of bone tissue diseases, innate immune cells and adaptive immune cells interact with bone cells, and their effects on bone metabolic homeostasis have attracted more and more attention, thus developing into a new discipline - osteoimmunology. Immune cells are the most important regulator of inflammation, and osteoimmune disorder may be an important cause of osteonecrosis. Elucidating the chronic inflammatory microenvironment regulated by abnormal osteoimmune may help develop potential treatments for osteonecrosis. This review summarizes the inflammatory regulation of bone immunity in osteonecrosis, explains the pathophysiological mechanism of osteonecrosis from the perspective of osteoimmunology, and provides new ideas for the treatment of osteonecrosis.

Abstract Nearly theoretical 100% atomic utilization (supposing each atom could serve as independent sites to play a role in catalyz) of single‐atom catalysts (SACs) makes it highly promising for various applications. However, for most SACs, single‐atom sites are trapped in a solid carbon matrix, which makes the inner parts hardly available for reaction. Herein, a hollow N‐doped carbon confined single‐atom Rh (Rh‐SACs/HNCR) is developed via a coordination‐template method. Both aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy mapping confirm the uniform distribution of Rh single atoms. Owning to the unique hollow structure and effective carbon confinement, excessive conversion from pyridinic/pyrrolic N to graphic N is hindered. As a proof of concept, Rh‐SACs/HNCR exhibits superior activity, stability, selectivity, and anti‐poisoning capability in formic acid oxidation reaction compared with the counterpart Rh/C, Pd/C, and Pt/C catalysts. This work provides a powerful strategy for synthesizing hollow carbon confined single‐atom catalysts apply in various energy‐related systems.

From the perspective of high-quality acquirers (with generated goodwill), this study analyses the conflicting issues in the formation, recognition and subsequent measurement of goodwill and finds that good enterprises are not willing to make a timely provision for goodwill impairment, and the reaction of investors implies a low value relevance of goodwill impairment disclosure. Further, trends in the market-to-book ratio indicate that the market has absorbed goodwill impairment information before its disclosure. This paper finds that listed companies may abuse goodwill and goodwill impairment standards by delaying the recognition and disclosure of goodwill impairment, which could lead to a sharp decline in the companies’ future performance. Overall, this study tends to provide some useful suggestions about how to disclose and refine goodwill impairment information under the current goodwill framework and offer suggestions to improve impairment testing, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) transactions, off-balance sheet information disclosure and corporate governance.

Protoporphyrin IX (PPIX), a fundamental precursor in the synthesis of heme and chlorophyll, plays a vital role in the biological metabolism and biogeochemical cycling in the ocean. PPIX has previously been identified in humans, animals, and plants, while so far as we know, there is no measurements until now regarding its contents in microbes, and especially in marine phytoplankton and bacteria. Here, for the first time, we reported a method of determining PPIX in marine microbial cells via acetone extraction followed by reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography quantification, in which acetone-acetonitrile/water-formic acid buffer was used as a gradient elution solvent. The method was optimized with the detection limit of 3.8 ± 1.0 pM, and recovery rate of 97.5 ± 1.9%. The structure of the extracted PPIX was further confirmed using tandem mass spectrometry as positively associated with specific protonated molecules [M + H]+. The method was then successfully applied in the determination of PPIX in microbial cells in the water samples collected from a median-sized subtropical estuary (the Jiulong River Estuary, China). The results showed that PPIX existed widely and ranged from 20 – 170 ng/L in cells in the water samples. In the whole estuary, cellular PPIX generally decreased linearly with increasing salinity. A positive correlation of PPIX with particulate organic matter in the estuary suggested of sediment suspension and dissolution as its possible source. In addition, a general hyperbolic fitting pattern was observed for PPIX against dissolved inorganic nitrogen, PO43−, and the bacterial abundance (104 – 106 cells/mL) in the estuary. Such results indicated that PPIX played a crucial role in linking nutrients and the microbial productivity. In summary, we developed a new technique of quantifying cellular PPIX in water samples and confirmed the wide existence of cellular PPIX in natural waters. The data from Jiulong River estuary further suggest that the contents of cellular PPIX be enhanced with the nutrient supply from riverine inputs and sediment suspensions, which thereafter dictate the productivity of phytoplankton and bacteria in coastal waters.

Abstract With the rapid development of cross-border e-commerce, the improvement of consumer satisfaction has become the focus of cross-border e-commerce platform optimization. Relying on advanced algorithm technology, it can realize the accurate and efficient matching between massive information and users, which is conducive to improving the user experience. Based on the consideration of consumer satisfaction, this paper constructs a dual channel supply chain composed of cross-border suppliers, cross-border e-commerce enterprises, retailers and consumers and studies the revenue and cost sharing contract of the supply chain under the conditions of centralized decision and decentralized decision. The research shows that cross-border e-commerce enterprises can choose to form revenue and expenditure sharing contracts through online and offline channels, optimize decentralized decision-making, and achieve win–win cooperation among supply chain entities.

Abstract Exploring low-cost and earth-abundant oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst is essential for fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Among them, non-metal nanocarbon with multiple advantages of low cost, abundance, high conductivity, good durability, and competitive activity has attracted intense interest in recent years. The enhanced ORR activities of the nanocarbons are normally thought to originate from heteroatom (e.g., N, B, P, or S) doping or various induced defects. However, in practice, carbon-based materials usually contain both dopants and defects. In this regard, in terms of the co-engineering of heteroatom doping and defect inducing, we present an overview of recent advances in developing non-metal carbon-based electrocatalysts for the ORR. The characteristics, ORR performance, and the related mechanism of these functionalized nanocarbons by heteroatom doping, defect inducing, and in particular their synergistic promotion effect are emphatically analyzed and discussed. Finally, the current issues and perspectives in developing carbon-based electrocatalysts from both of heteroatom doping and defect engineering are proposed. This review will be beneficial for the rational design and manufacturing of highly efficient carbon-based materials for electrocatalysis.
