Abstract

Der früheisenzeitliche Fundplatz am Mont Lassois bei Vix (Dép. Côte d’Or, Frankreich) ist insbesondere durch das ausserordentlich reich ausgestattetes Frauengrab bekannt, sowie durch die komplex befestigte Plateausiedlung mit Monumentalbauten und Importen aus dem Mittelmeerraum. Damit reiht er sich in das sogenannte «Fürstensitz»-Phänomen der westlichen Hallstattkultur ein. Während der Fokus lange Zeit auf offensichtlich spektakulären Befunden und Funden lag, war über das Geschehen an den Abhängen der Höhensiedlung kaum etwas bekannt. Aus diesem Desiderat heraus hat die Universität Zürich 2009–14 auf der Flur «Champ Fossé» am Westabhang der Anlage umfangreiche Ausgrabungen durchgeführt. Dabei wurden ein Abschnitt der Befestigung Nr. 5 sowie der unmittelbar dahinter anschliessende Bereich archäologisch untersucht. Zum einen konnten bedeutende Informationen zur Architektur und zum Bauvorgehen der Befestigungsmauer gewonnen, und zum anderen erstmals auch Reste einer «Unterstadt» ausserhalb der Zitadelle auf dem Plateau nachgewiesen werden. Die Entdeckungen am Champ Fossé bereichern die bisherigen Kenntnisse zum späthallstattlichen «Fürstensitz» am Mont Lassois insofern, als dass sie den Blick für das Alltägliche im Kontext des Extravaganten öffnen: Bauarbeiten, Handwerk, Wohnen – dies zur kurzen Blütezeit der «Protourbs» um 500 v. Chr. Die Ausgrabungen haben zudem gezeigt, dass das Champ Fossé in der Mittellatènezeit platzartig umgestaltet und den deformierten Waffenteilen nach zu beurteilen kurzfristig für Kulthandlungen genutzt wurde. Damit ist die am Mont Lassois bisher einzige archäologische Kulturschicht aus der Latènezeit belegt. In dieser Monografie werden die Befunde und Kleinfunde aus den Zürcher Ausgrabungen am Champ Fossé vorgelegt und in ihrem Zusammenhang besprochen.

Abstract

Seit Jahrzehnten als prähistorisches Bergbaugebiet bekannt, war das Oberhalbstein in den vergangenen Jahren erstmals Gegenstand systematischer montanarchäologischer Forschungen. Dabei wurden nicht nur Dutzende neue Fundstellen entdeckt, sondern erstmals auch zentrale Verhüttungsbefunde wie Öfen und Röstbette ausgegraben. Zudem konnten gleich mehrere Kupferbergwerke aus der Bronze- und Eisenzeit untersucht werden – eine schweizweite Premiere! Dank ausführlicher Geländearbeiten, Materialauswertungen und Laboranalysen kann nun der gesamte «Oberhalbstein-Prozess» vom Erz bis zum Metall rekonstruiert werden.

Abstract

While we are used to rely on archaeological features and finds to evidence human settlement and activity, there is a series of environmental proxies from soils, vegetation history, and floral or faunal remains that provide indirect and mostly off-site clues to human presence and impact on the natural environment. Landscape history can thus be built from both archaeological and environmental data; however, the two are not always in good accordance. Taking the site of Airolo-Madrano, the Leventina and Ticino Alpine valleys and their wider setting as an example, a multi-disciplinary research program investigated the evidence for prehistoric settlement and the relationship between human activities and environmental transformations in the years 2004–12. Archaeological information was gathered from archival sources, extensive and intensive survey activities, as well as archaeological excavations; vegetation history relied on pollen, macrofossil and charcoal signals in sediment cores, as well as on archaeobotanical and anthracological analysis of soil samples and settlement strata for subsistence activities. A large series of radiocarbon dates provided a reliable chronological framework, ranging from early postglacial to post-medieval periods, with a priority on the younger prehistoric periods. We focus on the pause and pulse signals obtained from the various environmental proxies and the chronological distribution of the archaeological evidence. There is only partial overlap of the different data, and apparent contradictions between e.g., proxies for agricultural activity and a total lack of archaeological finds, such as in the Neolithic, or the obvious time shift between valley-bottom and subalpine sites in certain phases of the Bronze and Iron ages, leave ample room for the discussion of methodological and source-based problems. GIS-based models provide powerful visualization opportunities in these contexts.

Abstract

Le Département d’Archéologie Préhistorique de l’Université de Zurich conduit depuis une trentaine d’années des fouilles archéologiques dans les Alpes. Les chercheurs s’intéressent en particulier aux modes d’occupation et aux paysages, élaborant de nouvelles techniques de recherche et, notamment, des approches interdisciplinaires de l’écologie humaine. Un nouveau projet intitulé « Léventine – paysage de l’occupation préhistorique » vise à retracer l’histoire du peuplement aux âges du Bronze et du Fer dans la Léventine (vallée alpine du Tessin) grâce à des études archéologiques et paléo-environnementales menées à différentes altitudes. Pour ce projet, il a fallu développer une méthodologie de prospection et de recherches éco-archéologiques, avec modélisation prédictive fondée sur des cartes archéologiques, étude systématique ou aléatoire du terrain, carottages, sondages et fouilles de moyenne ampleur. Les données sont modélisées en SIG à partir de la base de données du projet et de données spatiales mises à l’échelle. The department of Prehistoric Archaeology at the University of Zurich has been engaged in archaeological Alpine research for the last 30 years. This research focuses on themes of settlement and landscape archaeology mainly, developing new research methods, and in particular interdisciplinary approaches to human ecology. A new project entitled “Leventina – Prehistoric Settlement Landscape” aims at reconstructing the Bronze and Iron Age settlement history of the Leventina (Alpine Ticino valley) through archaeological and paleo-environmental studies in its different altitudinal zones. A comprehensive strategy of survey and eco-archaeological research has been designed for the project, including predictive modeling using archaeological maps, systematic and random field survey, coring, sub-surface testing, and medium-scale excavation. Data are modeled in GIS using the project database along with scaled geodata.

Abstract

Rock crystal is among the most fascinating materials in the archaeological record. It is formed in alpine-type fissures by hydrothermal processes. Due to its physical properties, rock crystal has been a valuable resource throughout human history. In alpine regions, it was frequently used for the production of stone tools between the Mesolithic and the Bronze Age. However, there are only a handful of known prehistoric crystal quartz quarries in Europe. The following article presents evidence for rock crystal mining during the Early Mesolithic and the final stage of the Neolithic at a high-altitude site in the Canton of Valais, Switzerland. In combination with radiocarbon dates from previous studies, the results of our fieldwork indicate that in the Swiss Alps rock crystal was mined almost 10,000 years ago. Furthermore, typo-technological analyses provide new insights into the way in which the raw material was processed during the represented time periods.

Abstract

The rich Mediterranean imports found in Early Celtic princely sites (7th-5th cent. BC) in Southwestern Germany, Switzerland and Eastern France have long been the focus of archaeological and public interest. Consumption practices, particularly in the context of feasting, played a major role in Early Celtic life and imported ceramic vessels have consequently been interpreted as an attempt by the elite to imitate Mediterranean wine feasting. Here we present the first scientific study carried out to elucidate the use of Mediterranean imports in Early Celtic Central Europe and their local ceramic counterparts through organic residue analyses of 99 vessels from Vix-Mont Lassois, a key Early Celtic site. In the Mediterranean imports we identified imported plant oils and grape wine, and evidence points towards appropriation of these foreign vessels. Both Greek and local wares served for drinking grape wine and other plant-based fermented beverage(s). A wide variety of animal and plant by-products (e.g. fats, oils, waxes, resin) were also identified. Using an integrative approach, we show the importance of beehive products, millet and bacteriohopanoid beverage(s) in Early Celtic drinking practices. We highlight activities related to biomaterial transformation and show intra-site and status-related differences in consumption practices and/or beverage processing.

45. TERRA 2017 – Terraced Landscapes of the Lower Engadine

Abstract

Archaeological and environmental investigations in the terraced landscapes of the Lower Engadine started already late in the 20th century with the pioneering works of Heinrich Zoller and Angelika Raba. More recently, an interdisciplinary network supported by the Archaeological Heritage Service of Grisons (ADG) and consisting of archaeological computing scientists (Karsten Lambers, University of Leiden), geomorphologists (Bertil Mächtle, University of Heidelberg), survey and soil specialists (Katja Kothieringer, Till Sonnemann, University of Bamberg), environmentalists (Angelika Abderhalden Raba, ARINAS, Sasha Kosanic, University of Konstanz) and archaeologists from UZH has relaunched fieldwork in this thrilling landscape.

Abstract

This comprehensive volume presents the results of a large interdisciplinary archaeological project realized in the Ticino valley of Switzerland and its adjacent regions between 2006 and 2012. The focus of the manifold surveys, analyses and modelings is on settlement structures, environmental contexts, and ecodynamic processes, from the younger Prehistoric periods to Roman times. The texts are gathered in over a dozen contributions, teaming 25 authors from various disciplines and countries of Alpine Europe.
