Abstract This study aimed to explore the potential of metal oxides such as Titanate Scrolled Nanosheets (TNs) in improving the radiosensitivity of sarcoma cell lines. Enhancing the response of cancer cells to radiation therapy is crucial, and one promising approach involves utilizing metal oxide nanoparticles. We focused on the impact of exposing two human sarcoma cell lines to both TNs and ionizing radiation (IR). Our research was prompted by previous in vitro toxicity assessments, revealing a correlation between TNs' toxicity and alterations in intracellular calcium homeostasis. A hydrothermal process using titanium dioxide powder in an alkaline solution produced the TNs. Our study quantified the intracellular content of TNs and analyzed their impact on radiation-induced responses. This assessment encompassed PIXE analysis, cell proliferation, and transcriptomic analysis. We observed that sarcoma cells internalized TNs, causing alterations in intracellular calcium homeostasis. We also found that irradiation influence intracellular calcium levels. Transcriptomic analysis revealed marked disparities in the gene expression patterns between the two sarcoma cell lines, suggesting a potential cell-line-dependent nano-sensitization to IR. These results significantly advance our comprehension of the interplay between TNs, IR, and cancer cells, promising potential enhancement of radiation therapy efficiency.

The attention deserved to the recognition of qualifications (degrees) and competencies acquired elsewhere, as a means for equity and inclusion in education has progressively influenced educational research and also educational policy and decision-making. Different European countries, agreeing with the importance of valorising informal learning, have expressed the need to make learning 'beyond the classroom' visible and to assess it in a more responsive and effective way. Despite the common educational policy framework, in the European area, students with a migratory background (i.e., migrants and/or refugees) continue to struggle in accessing university paths. Given the persistent difficulties in ensuring migrants and refugees equal access to education and training opportunities, this article reports a systematic review study focused on recognition practices realized, over the last 5 years, in the European higher education context. Against the backdrop of the learning recognition debate, the results of this literature review study show a scattered landscape of local practices, sometimes, misaligned with the educational policies defined at the European level. The present study represents a useful step in reflecting on what actions are expected to be designed and implemented by higher education institutions in order to ensure a culturally responsive and equitable education for all.

Abstract Background Over the last two decades, nanotechnologies and the use of nanoparticles represent one of the greatest technological advances in many fields of human activity. Particles of titanium dioxide (TiO2) are one of the nanomaterials most frequently found in everyday consumer products. But, due in particular to their extremely small size, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are prone to cross biological barriers and potentially lead to adverse health effects. The presence of TiO2 NPs found in human placentae and in the infant meconium has indicated unequivocally the capacity for a materno-fetal transfer of this nanomaterial. Although chronic exposure to TiO2 NPs during pregnancy is known to induce offspring cognitive deficits associated with neurotoxicity, the impact of a gestational exposure on a vital motor function such as respiration, whose functional emergence occurs during fetal development, remains unknown. Results Using in vivo whole-body plethysmographic recordings from neonatal mice, we show that a chronic exposure to TiO2 NPs during pregnancy alters the respiratory activity of offspring, characterized by an abnormally elevated rate of breathing. Correspondingly, using ex vivo electrophysiological recordings performed on isolated brainstem-spinal cord preparations of newborn mice and medullary slice preparations containing specific nuclei controlling breathing frequency, we show that the spontaneously generated respiratory-related rhythm is significantly and abnormally accelerated in animals prenatally exposed to TiO2 NPs. Moreover, such a chronic prenatal exposure was found to impair the capacity of respiratory neural circuitry to effectively adjust breathing rates in response to excitatory environmental stimuli such as an increase in ambient temperature. Conclusions Our findings thus demonstrate that a maternal exposure to TiO2 NPs during pregnancy affects the normal development and operation of the respiratory centers in progeny.

Abstract Laser-induced thermocapillary deformation of liquid surfaces has emerged as a promising tool to precisely characterize the thermophysical properties of pure fluids. However, challenges arise for nanofluid (NF) and soft bio-fluid systems where the direct interaction of the laser generates an intriguing interplay between heating, momentum, and scattering forces which can even damage soft biofluids. Here, we report a versatile, pump-probe-based, rapid, and non-contact interferometric technique that resolves interface dynamics of complex fluids with the precision of ~1 nm in thick-film and 150 pm in thin-film regimes below the thermal limit without the use of lock-in or modulated beams. We characterize the thermophysical properties of complex NF in three exclusively different types of configurations. First, when the NF is heated from the bottom through an opaque substrate, we demonstrate that our methodology permits the measurement of thermophysical properties (viscosity, surface tension, and diffusivity) of complex NF and biofluids. Second, in a top illumination configuration, we show a precise characterization of NF by quantitively isolating the competing forces, taking advantage of the different time scales of these forces. Third, we show the measurement of NF confined in a metal cavity, in which the transient thermoelastic deformation of the metal surface provides the properties of the NF as well as thermo-mechanical properties of the metal. Our results reveal how the dissipative nature of the heatwave allows us to investigate thick-film dynamics in the thin-film regime, thereby suggesting a general approach for precision measurements of complex NFs, biofluids, and optofluidic devices.

Tau is a microtubule-associated protein predominantly expressed in neurons, which participates in microtubule polymerization and axonal transport. Abnormal tau metabolism leads to neurodegenerative diseases named tauopathies, such as Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia. The alternative splicing of exon 10 (E10) in the primary transcript produces tau protein isoforms with three (3R) or four (4R) microtubule binding repeats, which are found in equal amounts in the normal adult human brain. Several tauopathies are associated with abnormal E10 alternative splicing, leading to an imbalance between 3R and 4R isoforms, which underlies disease. Correction of such imbalance represents a potential disease-modifying therapy for those tauopathies. We have previously optimized a trans-splicing RNA reprogramming strategy to modulate the 3R:4R tau content in a mouse model of tauopathy related to tau mis-splicing (htau mice), and showed that local modulation of E10 inclusion in the prefrontal cortex prevents cognitive decline, neuronal firing impairments and hyperphosphorylated tau accumulation. Furthermore, local shifting of 3R–4R tau into the striatum of htau mice prevented motor coordination deficits. However, a major bottleneck of our previous work is that local splicing regulation was performed in young mice, before the onset of pathological phenotypes. Here we tested whether regulation of tau E10 splicing could rescue tau pathology phenotypes in htau mice, after the onset of cognitive and motor impairments, comparable to early stages of human tauopathies. To determine phenotypic time course and affected brain nuclei, we assessed htau mice using behavioural tests and microPET FDG imaging over time, similarly to diagnosis methods used in patients. Based on these analyses, we performed local delivery of pre-trans splicing molecules to regulate E10 inclusion either into the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) or the striatum at 6-month-old once behavioral phenotypes and metabolic changes were detected. Tau isoforms modulation into the mPFC restored cognitive performance in mice that previously showed mild to severe memory impairment while motor coordination deficit was rescued after striatal injection of trans-splicing molecules. Our data suggest that tau regulation could recover pathological phenotypes early after phenotypic onset, raising promising perspectives for the use of RNA based therapies in tauopathies related to MAPT abnormal splicing.

A major unresolved issue in the cloning of mammals by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is the mechanism by which the process fails after embryos are transferred to the uterus of recipients before or during the implantation window. We investigated this problem by using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to compare the transcriptomes in cattle conceptuses produced by SCNT and artificial insemination (AI) at day (d) 18 (preimplantation) and d 34 (postimplantation) of gestation. In addition, endometrium was profiled to identify the communication pathways that might be affected by the presence of a cloned conceptus, ultimately leading to mortality before or during the implantation window. At d 18, the effects on the transcriptome associated with SCNT were massive, involving more than 5,000 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). A Humument (1966-2016), Tom Phillips’s masterwork, is an artist's book which falls under the category of found text by virtue of its compositional strategies. The book indeed consists in a revisitation and a détournement of every single page of a Victorian novel entitled A Human Document, published in 1892 by a certain William H. Mallock. Each page of A Humument constitutes a verbo-iconic complex in which the words isolated by Phillips and the various visual elements with which he covers the source text come into interaction, in often very elaborate configurations. The hybrid constellations patiently developed by Phillips are usually grounded in a very broad intertextual network which incorporates the established arts (literature, painting, music, etc.) alongside other artistic forms considered minor, including comics. The aim of our essay is to study as closely as possible Phillips’s re-appropriations of codes specific to comics, which he mobilizes in ways which alternate between the parodic and the poetic. Our analysis will thus focus on the formal hybridizations that Phillips operates on several pages of his work; it will also give us the opportunity to interrogate the necessarily problematic relationships which potentially unite comics and avant-gardist practices at the intersection of verbal and iconic registers.
