Abstract

Motivation: Indicator values are numerical values used to characterize the ecological niches of species and to estimate their occurrence along gradients. Indicator values on climatic and edaphic niches of plant species have received considerable attention in ecological research, whereas data on the optimal positioning of species along disturbance gradients are less developed. Here, we present a new data set of disturbance indicator values identifying optima along gradients of natural and anthropogenic disturbance for 6382 vascular plant species based on the analysis of 736,366 European vegetation plots and using expert-based characterization of disturbance regimes in 236 habitat types. The indicator values presented here are crucial for integrating disturbance niche optima into large-scale vegetation analyses and macroecological studies. Main types of variables contained: We set up five main continuous indicator values for European vascular plants: disturbance severity, disturbance frequency, mowing frequency, grazing pressure and soil disturbance. The first two indicators are provided separately for the whole community and for the herb layer. We calculated the values as the average of expert-based estimates of disturbance values in all habitat types where a species occurs, weighted by the number of plots in which the species occurs within a given habitat type. Spatial location and grain: Europe. Vegetation plots ranging in size from 1 to 1000 m2. Time period and grain: Vegetation plots mostly sampled between 1956 and 2013 (= 5th and 95th quantiles of the sampling year, respectively). Abstract

This article examines the effectiveness of pedagogical techniques and means of stimulating educational motivation during the classes “Rendering and annotating text in a foreign language” in distant learning in higher education. Experimental training was conducted to test the effectiveness of the authors’ electronic text rendering tutorial for students learning Italian as a second language. The experiment was carried out among the 2-nd and 3-rd year students of the Linguistics department in the Institute of Foreign Languages of the RUDN University in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic years. Currently e-learning has successfully integrated into the system of traditional education and is no longer seen as an alternative. The authors of this article focused on a combination of resources and tools from the Microsoft Teams platform and elaborated tutorial on rendering to motivate learners with distant learning. The article describes pedagogical practices for enhancing the motivation of students. We are talking about texts for rendering all major genres, functional styles, various topics, taking into account the level of students’ preparedness. With the aim of involving students in rendering activities and active expression of their own opinion, the researchers used an “ interpretive abstract “and included the paragraph “ OPPINIONE “ as its component. Experimental verification, its results and conclusions showed that combined rendering training based on e- tutorial developed by the authors and Microsoft Teams platform activates students’ motivation and contributes to their involvement in the process. The experiment showed another strong point of distant learning: it made a great contribution to the development of students’ independence, self-discipline and responsibility. 220.

Научная новизна исследования заключается в том, что в работе освещены особенности использования натурального метода освоения языка и создания искусственной языковой среды, которые за последние десятилетия доказали свою целесообразность среди различных категорий учащихся. В статье также описаны методы и способы, используемые американскими авторами и учеными при создании искусственной языковой среды в классе, которые помогают ученикам осваивать иностранный язык. Также статья включает информацию о тех условиях, которые необходимо создать для достижения данной цели. Полученные результаты показали, что существуют многочисленные факторы, которые нужно принять во внимание при создании языковой среды в классе., The aim of the study is to demonstrate how language environment can be created in the classroom and how students can benefit from it in terms of further development of their language skills, the scientific novelty lies in the fact that in this work the specifics natural approach usage and creating artificial language environment are highlighted which have proved to be extremely rewarding for all kinds of learners over the past decades. The article touches upon the methods and ways used by American authors and scholars in their artificially created classrooms which facilitate students` language acquisition. The article also includes the information about the conditions that have to be present in order to achieve this. The results obtained show that there are numerous factors that must be taken into consideration when artificial language environment is being introduced in the classroom. Abstract

Liquid heat-insulation based on hollow microspheres and polymer compounds become more and more popular in the construction industry. This material enjoys indisputable technological advantages easiness of application, low mass, flexibility, good adhesion to different materials. Traditional non-organic heat insulating materials, widely presented on modern construction market, have some disadvantages. Foam concrete and gas silicate have relatively high average density, which enables obtaining items and materials with a fairly low thermal conductivity coefficient. These materials have high saturation coefficient and low values of cold endurance. Inside the mineral-wool plates, which are quite popular on the modern market, the hyperfine fibers transform into dust particles by time, and agglutinative compounds destruct, releasing toxic substances. The aluminosilicate microspheres have a high potential as a commercial product, but their market has just started forming. According to rough calculations, the cost of the product is next lower order to the hollow microspheres, obtained by industrial methods.

Abstract

The steppe grasslands of eastern Central Europe are exceptionally species rich and valuable from a nature conservation point of view. However, their historical biogeography is still poorly understood. Here we use the regional diversity of habitat specialists and chloroplast DNA data to investigate potential long-term refugia of steppe species in this region. Location: Pannonian Basin and adjacent regions; SW Russia. Taxon: Vascular plants. Methods: After identifying habitat specialists of the three main steppe types (meadow steppes, grass steppes and rocky steppes), we compiled their regional presence–absence in grid cells of 75 km × 75 km. We analysed the dependency of habitat specialist diversity to climate, topographic heterogeneity and geographical distance to potential refugia. For genetic analysis, we sampled three or four habitat specialists of each steppe type and used cpDNA markers to investigate intraspecific diversity and geographical distribution of haplotypes. We also tested for correspondence between the number of habitat specialists and haplotype diversity. Results: Climate and topography explained between 40% and 63% of the variance in habitat specialist diversity. Adding geographical distance to potential refugia increased the explained variance in the models for all steppe types. Chloroplast haplotypes featured a complex pattern across the study area. Several species showed a strong geographical differentiation, suggesting migration waves from multiple refugia with only limited subsequent genetic intermixture. Maximum haplotype diversity in a region showed a better correlation with the number of habitat specialists per steppe type than mean haplotype diversity. Main conclusions: We can clearly reject the scenario of a late-Holocene immigration of steppe species from areas outside the Pannonian Basin. Contains fulltext : 222360.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), Aim The EUNIS Habitat Classification is a widely used reference framework for European habitat types (habitats), but it lacks formal definitions of individual habitats that would enable their unequivocal identification. Our goal was to develop a tool for assigning vegetation-plot records to the habitats of the EUNIS system, use it to classify a European vegetation-plot database, and compile statistically-derived characteristic species combinations and distribution maps for these habitats. Location Europe. Methods We developed the classification expert system EUNIS-ESy, which contains definitions of individual EUNIS habitats based on their species composition and geographic location. Each habitat was formally defined as a formula in a computer language combining algebraic and set-theoretic concepts with formal logical operators. We applied this expert system to classify 1,261,373 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and other databases. Then we determined diagnostic, constant and dominant species for each habitat by calculating species-to-habitat fidelity and constancy (occurrence frequency) in the classified data set. Finally, we mapped the plot locations for each habitat. Results Formal definitions were developed for 199 habitats at Level 3 of the EUNIS hierarchy, including 25 coastal, 18 wetland, 55 grassland, 43 shrubland, 46 forest and 12 man-made habitats. The expert system classified 1,125,121 vegetation plots to these habitat groups and 73,188 to other habitats, while 63,064 plots remained unclassified or were classified to more than one habitat. Data on each habitat were summarized in factsheets containing habitat description, distribution map, corresponding syntaxa and characteristic species combination. Abstract

Aim The EUNIS Habitat Classification is a widely used reference framework for European habitat types (habitats), but it lacks formal definitions of individual habitats that would enable their unequivocal identification. Our goal was to develop a tool for assigning vegetation-plot records to the habitats of the EUNIS system, use it to classify a European vegetation-plot database, and compile statistically-derived characteristic species combinations and distribution maps for these habitats. Location Europe. Methods We developed the classification expert system EUNIS-ESy, which contains definitions of individual EUNIS habitats based on their species composition and geographic location. Each habitat was formally defined as a formula in a computer language combining algebraic and set-theoretic concepts with formal logical operators. We applied this expert system to classify 1,261,373 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA) and other databases. Then we determined diagnostic, constant and dominant species for each habitat by calculating species-to-habitat fidelity and constancy (occurrence frequency) in the classified data set. Finally, we mapped the plot locations for each habitat. Results Formal definitions were developed for 199 habitats at Level 3 of the EUNIS hierarchy, including 25 coastal, 18 wetland, 55 grassland, 43 shrubland, 46 forest and 12 man-made habitats. The expert system classified 1,125,121 vegetation plots to these habitat groups and 73,188 to other habitats, while 63,064 plots remained unclassified or were classified to more than one habitat. Data on each habitat were summarized in factsheets containing habitat description, distribution map, corresponding syntaxa and characteristic species combination. Abstract

EUNIS-ESy is an expert system for automatic classification of European vegetation plots to habitat types of the EUNIS Habitat Classification. The EUNIS classification and the principles of the expert system are described by Chytrý et al. (2020). The classification of a set of vegetation plots can be run using the JUICE program (Tichý 2002; https://www.sci.muni.cz/botany/juice/), TURBOVEG 3 program (Hennekens 2015) and an R script (Bruelheide et al. 2021). Abstract

Given new data on the structure of the bottom trough of the valley of the river Teberda within the Middle Teberda landscape. The scheme of dismemberment of floodplain terraces is clarified and the reference to the glacier bed (sheep's forehead) of the Paleozoic shale ledge on the V terrace area is justified. The surface of the terraces are expe-riencing maximum anthropogenic load (highway, town, pasture). The terraces are represented by a series of subhori-zontal sites with the age from 10 to 90 thousand years. The surface of the sheep's forehead, located 1.75 km South of the settlement of Upper Teberda, freed from the ice cover about 100 thousand years ago. Even more ancient are the surfaces of the slopes, composed of bedrock. First studied herbaceous vegetation the sheep's forehead is represented by three communities: plantain-fescue steppe, forb-grass meadow steppe, turning into a steppe meadow and dubrov-nik-thyme-fescue petrophytic vegetation. Differences in species composition are mainly due to different steepness and exposure of slopes. The ecosystem is showing signs of overgrazing. According to the degree of anthropization, the vegetation of the sheep's forehead corresponds to the sub-climax stage with associations of indigenous and imaginary communities. On the surface of the V terraces has used since 1991 as an unregulated grazing, the anthropization of steppe vegetation reached percentile stage. According to the set of geological, geomorphological and botanical pa-rameters of the object sheep's forehead should be given the status of a natural monument. It is of interest for tourists and as an educational facility for students of geographical, biological, environmental and geological specialties.

Abstract

The European semi-dry grasslands belong to the most species-rich vegetation types of the northern hemisphere and form an important part of habitat mosaics of the forest-steppe zone. However, a comprehensive evaluation of compositional variation and phytosociological classification of these grasslands is still missing. For our syntaxonomic revision, we used a dataset of 34,173 vegetation plot records (relevés) from Central and Eastern Europe which were assigned to the class Festuco-Brometea using the diagnostic species listed in the EuroVegChecklist. To determine the diagnostic species of the orders, we used a TWINSPAN classification of the whole dataset. 15,449 relevés were assigned to the order Brachypodietalia pinnati, which corresponds to semi-dry grasslands. This subset was again classified with TWINSPAN. We established formal definitions for the following alliances: Mesobromion erecti, Cirsio-Brachypodion pinnati (incl. Fragario-Trifolion montani, Agrostio-Avenulion schellianae, Scabioso ochroleucae-Poion angustifoliae and Adonido vernalis-Stipion tirsae), Scorzonerion villosae and Chrysopogono-Danthonion. Another alliance, Armerion elongatae (= Koelerio-Phleion phleoidis p.p.), is transitional towards the class Koelerio-Corynephoretea and its status needs further evaluation. We also established formal definitions of all associations of the Mesobromion and Cirsio-Brachypodion within the study area. Associations were identified using (i) the TWINSPAN classification of the whole order, (ii) TWINSPAN classifications of regionally restricted data sets (usually all Brachypodietalia plots of one country) and (iii) existing national classification schemes. All formal definitions were written in the expert system language of the JUICE program. Formal definitions of the following alliances were established: Mesobromion erecti, Cirsio-Brachypodion pinnati (incl. Fragario-Trifolion montani. Agrosiio-Avenulion schellianae, Scabioso ochroleucae-Poion angustifoliae and Adonido vernalis-Stipion iirsae), Scorzonerion villosae and Chrysopogono-Danshonion. Another alliance, Armerion elongatae (=Koelerio-Phleion phleoidis p.p.). is transitional towards the class Koelerio-Corynephoreiea and its status needs further evaluation. We also established formal definitions of all of the associations of Mesobromion and Cirsio-Brachypodion within the area studied. Associations were identified using (i) a TWINSPAN classification of the whole order, (ii) TWINSPAN classifications of regionally restricted data sets (usually all Brachypodietalia plots in one country) and (iii) existing national classification schemes. All formal definitions were written in the expert system language of the JUICE program.
