While HER2 overexpression was a poor prognostic factor in breast cancer before trastuzumab (Herceptin) was available, TNBC is often reported as the worst BC subgroup since targeted therapy is currently not possible. Since the patience-specific experiences and the current literature did not always align, we aimed to determine the BC subgroup with the shortest survival in our center.Methods: The records of patients with BC who were admitted to Trakya University Faculty of Medicine Department of Medical and Radiation Oncology between July 1999 and December 2019 were reviewed. Patients were divided into four main groups (Luminal A, Luminal B, TNBC, and HER2-enriched) according to the St Gallen International Consensus Panel and four subgroups in accordance with estrogen receptor, progestin receptor and HER2 positivity. Patient characteristics, treatment characteristics and clinical outcomes of the four main subgroups were evaluated. Survival curves were generated using the Kaplan–Meier method, and the significance of survival differences among the selected variables was compared by using the Log rank test. Factors affecting disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed by Cox regression analysis.Results: Statistical analysis was performed on 2017 patients, after excluding patients with phyllodes tumor, carcinoma-in-situ and missing information from a total of 2474 patients with BC. There were 952 (47.1%) patients in the Luminal A group, 236 (34.1%) in the Luminal B group, 236 (11.7%) in the TNBC group and 142 (7.1%) patients in the HER2 enriched group. HER2-enriched patients had the shortest survival (p < 0.001), with 113.70 ± 7.17 months of DFS and 125.45 ± 3.03 months of OS. For patients who received Herceptin, DFS was 101.50 ± 6.4 months and OS was 118.14 ± 6.16. Patients who did not receive Herceptin had 92.79 ± 18 months of DFS and 94.44 ± 15.23 months of OS.Conclusion: The HER2-enriched subgroup had the worst prognosis despite receiving targeted therapy. While the duration of DFS and OS had no significant difference between TNBC and Luminal A-B subgroups, HER2 enriched subgroup had significantly shorter survival when compared to any other subgroup. Ultrafine 5 nm ceria isotropic nanoparticles were prepared using the rapid chemical precipitation approach from cerium(III) nitrate and ammonium hydroxide aqueous solutions. The as-prepared nanoparticles were shown to contain predominantly Ce(IV) species. The solubility of nanocrystalline CeO2 at several pH values was determined using ICP-MS and radioactive tracer methods. Phase composition of the ceria samples remained unchanged upon partial dissolution, while the shape of the particles changed dramatically, yielding nanorods under neutral pH conditions. According to X-ray absorption spectroscopy investigation of the supernatant, Ce(III) was the main cerium species in solution at pH < 4. Based on the results obtained, a reductive dissolution model was used for data interpretation. According to this model, the solubility product for ceria nanoparticles was determined to be log Ksp = -59.3 ± 0.3 in 0.01 M NaClO4. Taken together, our results show that the pH dependence of ceria anti- and pro-oxidant activity can be related to the dissolution of CeO2 in aqueous media.

Modifying genes play an exclusive role in the genetic regulation of the risk of breast cancer development in women with a pathogenic variation of BRCA1 or BRCA2. Therefore, it has been suggested that TNFRSF11A, which is among those modifying genes present in breast cancer development, may have a significant role in patients with positive BRCA1 or BRCA2 variations. In our study, we investigated the probable effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TNFRSF11A gene, such as rs4485469, rs9646629, rs34739845, rs17069904, rs 884205, rs4941129 on the risk of breast cancer in patients with BRCA1 or BRCA2 variations. A total of 23 breast cancer patients with pathogenic variations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, 28 patients with no pathogenic variations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, and 55 healthy women as a control group, were included in this study. The SNPs were determined with allelic discrimination analysis through the real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) method. There was no statistically significant difference between the SNPs of the TNFRSF11A gene rs4485469, rs9646629, rs34739845, rs17069904, rs884205, rs4941129 and metastasis, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and CerB2 receptor positivity between patient and control group (p >0.05). However, the rs4485469 SNP was found to be borderline significant between the patient groups with and without BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations (p = 0.059). In patients with BRCA1 or BRCA2 pathogenic variations living in the Trakya region of Turkey, we could not determine the relationship between TNFRSF11 SNPs with breast cancer risk.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is one of the plasma cell-related hematological malignancies exceeding 10.0% of all marrow cells, and they make a paraprotein that is a marker of the disease. Myeloma is one of the most common types of hematological malignancies in humans. Genetic bio-markers have been used for prognostic markers in patients diagnosed with MM. The genetic and genomic changes have been identified using karyotyping, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), next generation sequencing (NGS), specifically whole-genome sequencing or exome sequencing. Circulatory plasma cells, circulating free DNA (cfD-NA) and microRNAs (miRNAs) comprised in liquid biopsy are potentially used in diagnosis/prognosis of MM. In this study, we analyzed and compared results of karyo-typing, FISH and NGS in 35 MM cases. Diagnostic strategies are expanding rapidly and newly developed NGS-based testing may help the understanding of the complexities of genetic alterations in karyotypically normal cases.

Doxorubicin is one of the most commonly used chemotherapeutic agents for adjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer. In the studies focused on finding biomarkers to predict the response of the patients and tumors to the drugs used, the Twist transcription factor has been suggested as a candidate biomarker for predicting chemo-resistance of breast tumors. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between TWIST transcription factor expression and the effectiveness of doxorubicin treatment on directly taken primary tumor samples from chemotherapy-naive breast cancer patients. Single-molecule magnets represent the ultimate size limit for spin-based information storage and processing; however, such applications require large spin relaxation barriers and blocking temperatures. Ongoing efforts to synthesize single-molecule magnets with higher barriers must take into consideration key physical parameters, such as spin ground state, S, and axial zero-field splitting parameter, D, which are both correlated to the barrier height. A third critical parameter that has received less attention is the exchange coupling constant, J. This constant determines the degree of separation between spin ground state and excited states, which must be sufficiently large in a single-molecule magnet to maintain slow magnetization dynamics at elevated temperatures, and also serves to shut down fast quantum relaxation pathways. Toward this end, one synthetic strategy to engender strong magnetic exchange is the incorporation of radical ligands into metal complexes. Within these complexes, the presence of direct exchange between paramagnetic ligand and metal units can result in exceptionally strong magnetic coupling, much stronger in fact than more common superexchange interactions. This review article provides a survey of radical ligand-containing single-molecule magnets, with a brief overview of other classes of metal-ligand radical complexes that could be exploited in the design of new single-molecule magnets. Furthermore, ligand-field and electronic structure considerations in dictating exchange strength and slow magnetic relaxation are highlighted, with the aim of helping to guide the synthesis of future radical ligand-containing single-molecule magnets with even stronger exchange coupling.

This research explores the current status of implementing policy in sustainable development related teaching in higher education in Turkey. Turkish higher education policy has included increased commitment to sustainable development in recent years. However, there has not been much research conducted on its implementation. Hence, this study involves assessing the current status of sustainable development in teaching at higher education institutions (HEIs) in Turkey. Regarding the research design, a systematic review of accumulated sustainable development related teaching in all 193 HEIs in Turkey (as of the 2015-2016 academic year) was carried out. The accumulated programmes are categorised by occupation concerning sustainable development for the future of Turkey, and the courses are presented within those categories. Whilst many programmes and courses related to sustainable development were identified, the data also reveals the following features: the repetition of same courses; disciplinary partiality, particularly on environmental engineering; disciplinary conservatism and the lack of interdisciplinary practice in general; and last but not least, the differences between what sustainable development means in the European higher education political initiative and what the state of practice is in Turkish higher education.

Suicidal behavior has multiple causes, which are broadly divided into those related to proximal stressors and those due to predisposition. Suicide statistics may be associated with mental health disorders, which are among the foremost predictors of suicide attempts. More than 90% of patients who commit suicide have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder, usually a major depressive disorder. Other major risk factors for suicide attempts are history of suicide attempts in the family, stressful life events, sleep disturbances, poor income, unemployment, severity of symptoms of depression, and anxiety. Sleep is a complex phenomenon. Sleep disturbances can therefore be contributed to the emergence of suicidal behavior allowing for the possibility of predicting future suicides. Methods: We evaluated 106 patients who were admitted after suicide attempts to the Department of Psychiatry at Dicle University Faculty of Medicine. The recruited subjects were assessed by Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I disorders, and the intensity of symptoms was evaluated using the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The mean values of the subjects attempting multiple and single suicides were compared using appropriate inferential statistical tests. Results: Most suicide attempts are believed to be preventable. Our results revealed that a great variety of risk factors are associated with an increased risk for multiple suicide attempts. Most of these attempts appeared to be spontaneous and impulsive rather than planned. In particular, this study highlights the importance of previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in the family, history of stressful life events in the previous 6 months, poor income, unemployment, sleep disturbances, severe hopelessness with depression, and coexisting symptoms of anxiety as risk factors. Conclusion: The first step in prevention of suicides is doubtlessly strong and reliable communication, due to the fact that the majority of subjects who commit suicide have had contact with a health professional during the month before the suicide. It was reported that increased production of the main proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and that of acute phase reactants may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of depression. Stress and depression were reported to increase leukocyte and neutrophil counts and to decrease lymphocyte count. Biological determinants affecting the diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of depression are quite limited. Therefore, new etiological models are needed to explain the pathophysiology of depression. In recent years, neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was determined to be a good indicator of inflammatory status. There is no study in the literature investigating NLR in MDD. This study aims to examine the role of inflammation in the etiology of depression based on the NLR in MDD patients who are undergoing no pharmacological therapy. A total of 41 patients diagnosed with MDD, who received no antidepressant therapy within the past 1 month, were included in the study, which took place between January and March 2015. The control group consisted of 47 healthy subjects with no psychiatric disorders. A sociodemographic information form and a Beck Depression Scale were administered, and the blood was taken for biochemical analysis.
