This study aims to find a correlation between winter outdoor design temperature (WDT) and mass of the building envelope. The daily variations of the inside surface temperatures and heat fluxes of the walls under various climatic conditions and different wall constructions have been calculated by a computer program based on the response factor technique, which uses variable outside air temperature and solar radiation and constant inside air temperature values as input climatic data. The analysis of the relation between mass of the walls and inside surface heat fluxes resulted with the correction values for winter design temperature (WDTCV) depending on the mass of the wall and on the direction of facades for different climatic zones.

- Abstract
Since 1996, the provision of a refuge floor has been a mandatory feature for all new tall buildings in Hong Kong. These floors are designed to provide for the building occupants a fire safe environment that is also free from smoke. However, the desired cross ventilation on these floors to achieve the removal of smoke, assumed by the Building Codes of Hong Kong, is still being questioned so that a further scientific study of the wind-induced ventilation of a refuge floor is needed. This paper presents an investigation into this issue. The developed computational technique used in this paper was adopted to study the wind-induced natural ventilation on a refuge floor. The aim of the investigation was to establish whether a refuge floor with a central core and having cross ventilation produced by only two open opposite external side walls on the refuge floor would provide the required protection in all situations taking into account behaviour of wind due to different floor heights, wall boundary conditions and turbulence intensity profiles. The results revealed that natural ventilation can be increased by increasing the floor height provided the wind angle to the building is less than 90°. The effectiveness of the solution was greatly reduced when the wind was blowing at 90° to the refuge floor opening.

- Abstract
The distinctive timber and iron house of Queensland, has evolved over time reflecting the culture of the local people and the climate of the region. These houses are currently facing major pressures due to gentrification and development in the older inner city suburbs of Brisbane. The key objective of the paper is to examine the major planning issues and opportunities for the continuation of vernacular traditions. This paper first discusses the historical development of ‘Queenslander’ house focussing on some of its key architectural features and their suitability for the local climate. It then reviews policy documents of the Brisbane City Council (BCC) to identify the key planning issues relating to vernacular architecture. Lastly, it identifies the key opportunities to enhance the vernacular architecture in Brisbane. While there is generally a good community and council support for protection of vernacular architecture, there are issues relating to perceiving them as a hindrance to development. There are also concerns about social equity, as renovating old Queenslanders may be a cost burden to long-term owners with limited income. With proper maintenance and remodelling ‘Queenslanders’, owners have significantly enhanced the value of their property. This has often benefited the relatively wealthy in the community. The initiatives taken by BCC have provided unique opportunities for maintaining and enhancing the vernacular architecture of Queensland. Furthermore, it has given a distinctive character to the city and provided an opportunity to promote local architecture as part of the marketing of the city.

Prof. Dr. F. Nur Demirbilek Co-supervisor Part-time InstUğur G. Yalçıner January 1996, 160 pages The concept of the economic analysis of a building in relation to its thermal performance considering initial and operating costs is the main aim of this thesis. There is a direct relation between the usage of energy and the economy. So it is important to have rational and optimized designs which are both energy efficient and cost effective. In this study, the economy of energy-efficient buildings is defined and the concept of life-cycle costing is explained within a methodological framework. Then the financial concepts that are used in an economic analysis, which includes life-cycle costing, are presented. IIIMoreover, a computer program named COST is developed as an additional software for the thermal analysis program SUNCODE-PC in the scope of this study. COST is able to determine a building's initial cost and the annual operating costs regarding energy usage if that building has input data in the form of a building file of SUNCODE-PC. A sample case study on a group of buildings is made by analyzing the output data of COST with the methods of life-cycle costing. The results have shown that the most energy efficient building is not the most cost effective one at the same time and this type of an economic analysis can bring considerable amount of savings in monetary terms in the initial stages of a design. - Abstract
Purpose: This study investigates the effects of daily consumption of a probiotic ayran drink on gingival inflammation and the development of experimental gingivitis., Materials and Methods: This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 54 volunteer students. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: the control group received regular ayran for 42 days, while the test group received probiotic enriched ayran (including Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum) for 42 days twice a day. After 42 days, mechanical plaque control was stopped for 5 days. The plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing bleeding (BOP), and probing depth (PPD) were measured at baseline, day 42, and day 47. At the same time, gingival crevicular fluid was taken for matrix metalloproteinase-8 examination., Results: The mean scores of BOP, GI, PI, and MMP-8 levels increases in both groups following the 5-day experimental gingivitis period compared to baseline and day 42. Patients using probiotic ayran had significantly less PI, GI, BOP scores and MPP-8 values (p = 0.002; p 0.001; p 0.001; p = 0.001; p = 0.001, respectively) at day 47 compared to the control group. No statistically significant differences in probing pocket depth (PPD) were observed at any time point., Conclusion: The present study suggests that daily consumption of a probiotic ayran drink containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum statistically significantly lowers clinical and immunological markers of gingival inflammation.

- Abstract
Dental implant surgery is almost always associated with patient anxiety. Anxiety during dental surgical procedures triggers an increase in sympathetic activity. Mindfulness meditation (MM) is often associated with high levels of relaxation in the form of increased parasympathetic tone and decreased sympathetic activity. However, the effect of MM on dental anxiety is not clear. The current study aimed to show the effects of a MM as a sedative technique during dental implant surgery by examining the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S), bispectral index (BIS), cortisol levels (CL), systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR) and saturation (SpO
2 ) parameters. HR, SBP, DBP, SpO2 , BIS score and CLs were compared at the baseline, immediately before-, during-, and immediately after surgery between the test and control groups. We found that the MM resulted in significant decrease in BIS together with positive effects on hemodynamic parameters (decrease of HR, SBP, DBP and increase of SpO2 ), psychological findings (improvement on STAI-S scores) and biochemical outcomes (decreased CL). In conclusion, the results demonstrate that MM appeared to be a reliable strategy for managing stress during dental implant operation with benefits in psychological, physiological and biochemical outcomes., (© 2023.
