Congenital factor deficiencies (CFDs) refer to inherited deficiency of coagulation factors in the blood. A total of 481 patients with CFDs, who were diagnosed and followed at our Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic between 1990 and 2015, were retrospectively evaluated. Of the 481 cases, 134 (27.8%) were hemophilia A, 38 (7.9%) were hemophilia B, 57 (11.8%) were von Willebrand disease (vWD), and 252 (52.3%) were rare bleeding disorders (RBDs). The median age of the patients at the time of diagnosis and at the time of the study was 4.1 years (range: 2 months to 20.4 years) and 13.4 years (range: 7 months to 31.3 years), respectively. The median duration of the follow-up time was 6.8 years (range: 2.5 months to 24.8 years). One hundred nineteen (47.2%) of 252 patients with RBDs were asymptomatic, 49 (41.1%) of whom diagnosed by family histories, 65 (54.6%) through preoperative laboratory studies, and 5 (4.2%) after prolonged bleeding during surgeries. Consanguinity rate for the RBDs was 47.2%. Prophylactic treatment was initiated in 80 patients, 58 of whom were hemophilia A, 7 were hemophilia B, 13 were RBDs, and 2 were vWD. Significant advances have been achieved during the past 2 decades in the treatment of patients with CFDs, particularly in patients with hemophilias. The rarity and clinical heterogeneity of RBDs lead to significant diagnostic challenges and improper management. Background/aim: The aim of this study was the determination and prospective follow-up of quality of life, depression, and anxiety in pediatric patients with cancer under chemotherapy, as well as the evaluation of related factors. Materials and methods: Fifty newly diagnosed pediatric cancer patients and their parents were prospectively monitored before, during, and after therapy, and tests were used. Results: Significantly lower quality of life scores were recorded during treatment, in the group with CNS tumors, in the group receiving chemotherapy plus radiotherapy plus surgery, in the inpatient-only treatment group, in the group receiving treatment for longer than 6 months, and in the group of patients whose diagnosis was delayed for more than 3 months. Total quality of life scores for children and their parents were 82.95 ± 14.59 vs. 83.61 ± 14.60 before, 54.69 ± 16.51 vs. 55.78 ± 16.05 during, and 83.88 ± 12.44 vs. 84.19 ± 13.22 at the end of treatment (P < 0.05). Anxiety and depression scores were significantly higher during treatment, in patients whose diagnoses were delayed for more than 3 months, and among inpatients. A significant portion of the thoracic masses in childhood are seen in the mediasten. For practical identification of tumors that originate from different tissues, the mediasten is divided into two parts as superior and inferior. The inferior part is subdivided into three portions as anterior, middle and posterior. Mediastinal masses may be malignant or non-malignant. The symptoms vary according to the size and location of the mass. Anterior mediastinal masses are important because of the possibility to press the airways and great arteries. On the other hand, posterior mediastinal masses are also important because of the possibility to extend into intramedullary area and press to nerve roots. According to the symptoms and signs that occur depending on the size and pressure of the mass, immediate treatment may be required. While history and physical examination are important for diagnosis, imaging and laboratory tests are also helpful. Histopathological evaluation is often required for definitive diagnosis. We aimed to evaluate long-term toxicity in children with medulloblastoma treated with postoperative radiotherapy (RT). This study included 21 patients aged 4 - 1 6 who had been diagnosed with medulloblastoma. All of the patients in the study received postoperative craniospinal RT. Postoperative RT followed by chemotherapy was the treatment protocol. A total of 13 patients (62%) received chemotherapy concurrently with RT. Overall survival was 50 months (range, 1-169 months) and disease-free survival was 39 months (range, 4-171 months). In the data analysis, the heights of 11 patients (91.6%) were found to be below 50% on the height curve, and 8 (66.6%) patients had weights below 50% on the weight curve. Mean sitting height was 7 2. 5 8 ± 6. 3 3 cm, and this was statistically correlated with parameters such as LH level (p=0.037), testosterone level (p=0.020), height (p=0.002), weight (p=0.033) and age at diagnosis (p=0.002). Radiation therapy for medulloblastoma seems to have a late toxic effect on long-term survivors. Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic characteristics of children with neuroblastoma (NBL). Materials and Methods: Hospital records were reviewed retrospectively. Age, symptoms and their durations, tumor site, stage and results of complete blood count, LDH and VMA were recorded. Statistical comparisons and calculations were made. Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 2.57±2.49 yrs (ranges 0-12). Of children, 89% were under 5 years and 32% were below 1 year. The most common tumor sites were abdomen [74.8%; (adrenal 66%), (non-adrenal 8.8%)], paraspinal region (12%), chest (7%) and pelvis (3.5%). Most of the tumors were in advanced stage (stage 1 and 2= 30.4 %, stage 3 and 4=13% and 46,1% and stage 4S=10.4%). The diagnosis was made from bone marrow cytology and increased VMA in 11% of the cases. VMA level was high in 83% of the patients. Median duration of symptoms was 6.5 weeks. The most frequent complaints were pallor, abdominal mass, abdominal pain and bone pain. Conclusions: NBL mainly involves young children. Clinical presentation varies with primary tumor site and dissemination. Anemia, abdominal and bone pain have diagnostic significance. The amount of vomiting was described on numbers and the grade of nausea was described between 0-10. Vomiting and nausea was evaluated daily by the same clinician. Results: Sixty-nine late nausea and vomiting episodes in 35 patients were evaluated. There were 22 females and 13 males in the study group. Mean age was 8.88±5.43 (1 to 17) years. Late nausea was found 2.8% on the first day, 81.1% on the second day, 68% on the third day, 46.3% on the fourth day and 24.6% on the fifth day. Late emesis was found 1.4% on the first day, 65.2% on the second day, 43.5% on the third day, 24.6% on the fourth day and 13% on the fifth day. There was no significant difference in nausea and emesis between boys and girls. There was a positive correlation between the age and nausea/emesis episodes. The correlation coefficients between age and nausea grade on 2, 3, 4 and 5th days were 0.29, 0.27, 0.33, and 0.24, respectively; and p values were 0.013, 0.023, 0.005 and 0.046, respectively. The degree of the emetogenic potential of drugs on the number of emesis and the severity of nausea was found to be not significant. The vomiting was statistically significant on second and third days and grade of nausea on first, second and third days in the patients given cisplatin. Introduction: The aim of this study is to evaluate admissonal clinical and laboratory characteristics of pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients who are treated in our department. Materials and Method: Data of pediatric NHL patients were reviewed retrospectively. Age, sex, history of disease, histopathological classification, localization of mass, stage, and a number of laboratory tests were recorded. Results: One hundred eighteen NHL patients were included. The mean age of the patients was 8.2±3.9 (median 8.6) years. While the patients under 5 years constituted 31.3% of all, the ratio of patients under 3 years was 12.7%. Male to female ratio was 4.3. The evaluation according to the stages of the disease showed that 4.2% of patients were stage II, 78% were stage III and 17.8% were stage IV. Thirty nine percent of patients presented with abdominal mass and 24.6% were with mediastinal mass. Primary peripheral lymph node originated disease was seen in 14.4%; nasopharynx, Waldeyer ring and tonsils were involved in 11.9% and paranasal sinuses and facial bones in 5.1%. The rest was localized in paravertebral region and central nervous system (5.1%). The symptomatic period before admission was ranged between 2 days and 52 weeks (mean 6.3±7.8 weeks). The most common symptom was swelling due to underlying lymphadenopathies or mass (57%). Forty percent of patients presented with abdominal distension, 33% with dyspnea, and 29% with cough. Systemic symptoms like fever, weight loss and malaise were found in 43% of patients. High lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were found in 60% of patients. Conclusion: Incidence, clinical and histopathological features of childhood NHL show regional differences. Our results revealed that 95.8% of patients had advanced stage disease, the patients under five years mostly presented with abdominal mass and the older children with mediastinal and nodal involvement. Septic pulmonary embolism (PE) is a diagnosis seldom considered in children. A 15-year-old girl presented with fever, extremity swelling and pain for 5 days. Chest radiograph revealed a large, round density in the right lung and consolidation areas in peripheral portions of both lungs. Computed tomography showed bilateral multiple round and cavitary nodules in peripheral portions of both lungs, pleural effusion in the right lung and hypodense round lesion (8x4 cm) in the superior segment of right lower lobe, characteristic of PE. Cefotaxime and clindamycin were administered. By the 5th hour, the patient passed away. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from blood, pleural fluid and tracheal aspirate cultures.
