7. A bioadhesive pacing lead for atraumatic cardiac monitoring and stimulation in rodent and porcine models.

Abstract

Current clinically used electronic implants, including cardiac pacing leads for epicardial monitoring and stimulation of the heart, rely on surgical suturing or direct insertion of electrodes to the heart tissue. These approaches can cause tissue trauma during the implantation and retrieval of the pacing leads, with the potential for bleeding, tissue damage, and device failure. Here, we report a bioadhesive pacing lead that can directly interface with cardiac tissue through physical and covalent interactions to support minimally invasive adhesive implantation and gentle on-demand removal of the device with a detachment solution. We developed 3D-printable bioadhesive materials for customized fabrication of the device by graft-polymerizing polyacrylic acid on hydrophilic polyurethane and mixing with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) to obtain electrical conductivity. The bioadhesive construct exhibited mechanical properties similar to cardiac tissue and strong tissue adhesion, supporting stable electrical interfacing. Infusion of a detachment solution to cleave physical and covalent cross-links between the adhesive interface and the tissue allowed retrieval of the bioadhesive pacing leads in rat and porcine models without apparent tissue damage. Continuous and reliable cardiac monitoring and pacing of rodent and porcine hearts were demonstrated for 2 weeks with consistent capture threshold and sensing amplitude, in contrast to a commercially available alternative. Pacing and continuous telemetric monitoring were achieved in a porcine model. These findings may offer a promising platform for adhesive bioelectronic devices for cardiac monitoring and treatment. Clinically adopted pacing leads involve puncture of the cardiac tissue by direct electrode insertion or suture. Deng et al. developed a 3D-printed adhesive polymeric pacing lead that supported minimally invasive implantation on the epicardial surface and on-demand detachment to reduce the potential for tissue damage. In rat and porcine models, the adhesive pacing lead demonstrated strong adhesion to cardiac tissue and did not cause macroscopic tissue damage or bleeding with adhesion or on-demand removal. The device integrated with existing clinical pacing equipment and provided a stable electrical interface for cardiac monitoring and pacing for 10 to 14 days in rat and porcine models. Abstract

Coral mud is a special rock and sediment mass and is widely distributed in the South China Sea. Studying the deformation of coral mud is important for infrastructure development in the South China Sea. When choosing a model to describe the long-term deformation of coral mud, it is difficult for a simple nonlinear deformation model to accurately and universally describe the complex deformation processes of the sediment; a complex model is too time-consuming and difficult to apply to practical engineering. In this article, based on a classical element model, the Burgers model, certain elements are modified in combination with one-dimensional oedometer tests under normally consolidated situations. Then, combined with an unloading and reloading test, the modified Burgers model is further improved, and a modified Burgers model considering stress history is obtained. The modified Burgers model considering the stress history only has four parameters, all of which have practical physical significance, which makes the model easy to use. Different loading times and cyclic loading and unloading tests prove that the model has good stability and can, not only simulate the deformation characteristics of sediment, but can also provide good variation rules for the parameters. 18. Validation of the Chinese Involuntary Musical Imagery Scale and its Application in Mainland China

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the Involuntary Musical Imagery Scale and its application in mainland China. Two studies were conducted. In Study 1, the Involuntary Musical Imagery Scale contents were translated into Chinese and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 undergraduate students; on this basis, a preliminary version of the Chinese Involuntary Musical Imagery Scale was generated. Subsequently, the psychometric properties of the Chinese Involuntary Musical Imagery Scale were analyzed based on 443 questionnaires; a four-factor model was found to achieve the best fit to the collected data and the Chinese Involuntary Musical Imagery Scale showed excellent internal consistency. In Study 2, the Chinese Involuntary Musical Imagery Scale was used to investigate the experience of involuntary musical imagery in mainland China ( n = 426), where we explored the correlations among its factors and mental control, obsessive-compulsive traits, neuroticism, and openness; the results suggest that the frequency of involuntary musical imagery in Chinese individuals was lower than that of individuals in Western samples, and there were significant correlations between characteristics of involuntary musical imagery and various individual traits. Additionally, differences in involuntary musical imagery between students from urban areas and those from rural areas, as well as between only-child students and students with siblings, were found for the first time.

Abstract

Background Clearance of coronary arterial thrombosis is necessary in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing urgent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). There is currently no highly-recommended method of thrombus removal during interventional procedures. We describe a new method for opening culprit vessels to treat STEMI: intracoronary arterial retrograde thrombolysis (ICART) with PCI. Methods & Results Eight patients underwent ICART. The guidewire was advanced to the distal coronary artery through the occlusion lesion. Then, we inserted a microcatheter into the distal end of the occluded coronary artery over the guidewire. Urokinase (5–10 wu) mixed with contrast agents was slowly injected into the occluded section of the coronary artery through the microcatheter. The intracoronary thrombus gradually dissolved in 3–17 min, and the effect of thrombolysis was visible in real time. Stents were then implanted according to the characteristics of the recanalized culprit lesion to achieve full revascularization. One patient experienced premature ventricular contraction during vascular revascularization, and no malignant arrhythmias were seen in any patient. No reflow or slow flow was not observed post PCI. Thrombolysis in myocardial infarction flow grade and myocardial blush grade post-primary PCI was 3 in all eight patients. No patients experienced bleeding or stroke. Conclusions ICART was accurate and effective for treating intracoronary thrombi in patients with STEMI in this preliminary study. ICART was an effective, feasible, and simple approach to the management of STEMI, and no intraprocedural complications occurred in any of the patients. ICART may be a breakthrough in the treatment of acute STEMI.

A highly transparent and stretchable electrode based on a Au nanomesh, electrodeposited with a thin layer of MnO2 with a transparency of 84.7% is introduced. The as-prepared transparent, stretchable, and imperceptible supercapacitor (TSPS) exhibits a specific capacitance of 0.53 mF cm−2 and excellent bending stability, together with high stretchability (up to 160% strain). Abstract

Purpose In this study, we explored the association between cognitive impairment and depression in the very elderly using a sample aged 90–108 years. Methods A cross-sectional study. Results The sample included 682 unrelated Chinese nonagenarians/centenarians (67.25% women, mean age of 93.49 years). The mean depression score (measured with the brief 23-item Geriatrics Depression Scale-Chinese Edition was 8.45 (standard deviation [SD] = 3.30). The mean of cognitive function scores (measured with the 30-item Mini-Mental State Examination) was 15.54 (SD = 5.38). There was no significant difference in cognitive function scores between subjects with and without depression, and there was also no significant difference in depression scores between subjects with and without cognitive impairment. There was also no significant difference in the frequency of depression between subjects with and without cognitive impairment or in the frequency of cognitive impairment between subjects with and without depression. Both the odds ratio (OR) of depression (as a function of increased cognitive impairment) and the OR of cognitive impairment (as a function of increased depression) were found to be insignificant. Pearson Correlation also showed no significant correlation between depression scores and cognitive function scores. Conclusions In summary, we found that depression was not directly correlated with cognitive impairment in Chinese nonagenarians and centenarians.
