Soil respiration (Rs) is the second-largest terrestrial carbon (C) flux. Although Rs has been extensively studied across a broad range of biomes, there is surprisingly little consensus on how the spatiotemporal patterns of Rs will be altered in a warming climate with changing precipitation regimes. Here, we present a global synthesis Rs data from studies that have manipulated precipitation in the field by collating studies from 113 increased precipitation treatments, 91 decreased precipitation treatments, and 14 prolonged drought treatments. Our meta-analysis indicated that when the increased precipitation treatments were normalized to 28% above the ambient level, the soil moisture, Rs, and the temperature sensitivity (Q10) values increased by an average of 17%, 16%, and 6%, respectively, and the soil temperature decreased by -1.3%. The greatest increases in Rs and Q10 were observed in arid areas, and the stimulation rates decreased with increases in climate humidity. When the decreased precipitation treatments were normalized to 28% below the ambient level, the soil moisture and Rs values decreased by an average of -14% and -17%, respectively, and the soil temperature and Q10 values were not altered. The reductions in soil moisture tended to be greater in more humid areas. Prolonged drought without alterations in the amount of precipitation reduced the soil moisture and Rs by -12% and -6%, respectively, but did not alter Q10. Overall, our synthesis suggests that soil moisture and Rs tend to be more sensitive to increased precipitation in more arid areas and more responsive to decreased precipitation in more humid areas. The responses of Rs and Q10 were predominantly driven by precipitation-induced changes in the soil moisture, whereas changes in the soil temperature had limited impacts. Finally, our synthesis of prolonged drought experiments also emphasizes the importance of the timing and frequency of precipitation events on ecosystem C cycles. Given these findings, we urge future studies to focus on manipulating the frequency, intensity, and seasonality of precipitation with an aim to improving our ability to predict and model feedback between Rs and climate change.

The associations of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) or ectomycorrhiza (EcM) fungi with plants have sequentially evolved and significantly contributed to enhancing plant nutrition. Nonetheless, how evolutionary and ecological forces drive nutrient acquisition strategies of AM and EcM woody plants remains poorly understood. Our global analysis of woody species revealed that, over divergence time, AM woody plants evolved faster nitrogen mineralization rates without changes in nitrogen resorption. However, EcM woody plants exhibited an increase in nitrogen mineralization but a decrease in nitrogen resorption, indicating a shift towards a more inorganic nutrient economy. Despite this alteration, when evaluating present‐day woody species, AM woody plants still display faster nitrogen mineralization and lower nitrogen resorption than EcM woody plants. This inorganic nutrient economy allows AM woody plants to thrive in warm environments with a faster litter decomposition rate. Our findings indicate that the global pattern of nutrient acquisition strategies in mycorrhizal plants is shaped by the interplay between phylogeny and climate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nitrogen (N) retention is a critical ecosystem function for maintaining soil fertility and mitigating pollution caused by anthropogenic N input. However, it has not yet been elucidated how responses of plant and soil regulate ecosystem N retention. Here, we combined a 14‐year N addition experiment in a temperate steppe with a global meta‐analysis in grasslands, to assess changes in carbon (C) pool size and stoichiometric C:N ratio of plant and soil components and evaluate the contribution of each component to grassland N retention under increasing N levels. We found that N addition increased N storage in the plant pool by stimulating biomass production and reducing tissue C:N at the community level. However, the non‐random loss of forbs and legumes associated with a low C:N ratio partially offset the decline in community‐level C:N ratio, thereby diminishing the positive net effect of N enrichment on plant N storage. The observed increase in soil N storage was predominantly determined by the decrease in C:N ratio of topsoil, while no changes were detected in the subsoil. On 14‐year time scale, the upper limitation of N retention capacity in our study site was 167.02 g N/m2. Global meta‐analysis further indicated that a decade's N addition significantly increased the N storage in shoot, root and topsoil through enhancing the C pool and decreasing the C:N ratio, while did not affect those of subsoil. However, the positive correlation between the response of subsoil N storage and treatment duration further indicates that, though the accumulation of added N lagged behind that of topsoil, subsoil could play an important role in N retention on a longer time scale. Our study demonstrated that the enhanced plant productivity and altered physiological metabolism indicated by the decreased C:N ratio jointly determined grassland ecosystem N retention. The capacity of the grassland ecosystem to retain exogenous N input is limited, especially for a large amount of N input that occurs in a short period. However, in the context of chronically rising N deposition, the long‐term N retention capacity of grasslands should largely depend on the response of subsoil, especially after topsoil N is saturated. Carbon (C) loss due to soil erosion is a major issue in semi‐arid grasslands. The extent of soil erosion is determined by soil properties and vegetation structure, especially during the non‐growing season. In many Inner Mongolian grasslands, intensive land‐use, such as overgrazing and mowing, has severely reduced plant cover and damaged soil structure, which has exacerbated soil C loss by erosion. At the same time, increasing winter snowfall due to climate change is stimulating plant growth and altering plant composition. However, we do not know how changes in winter snow cover interact with land‐use practices to regulate soil C loss due to erosion.Here, we conducted a 6‐year snow manipulation experiment under different land‐use practices (control; moderately mowed, MM; heavily mowed, HM) to measure net changes in soil depth, soil C, plant biomass and vegetation structure.After 6 years, soil C loss under ambient snow was three times greater in the MM and four times greater in the HM treatment compared with controls during non‐growing season. However, deepened winter snow alleviated erosion‐induced soil C loss by 14%, 47%, 16% in the controls, MM and HM treatments respectively.The severity of soil C loss declined with increasing above‐ground biomass (AGB), surface root biomass and vegetation structure. Vegetation structure and AGB explained more of the variation in soil C loss than surface root biomass, possibly because a complex canopy and plant cover increases overall surface roughness, thereby reducing soil C loss. Intensified land‐use reduced AGB, surface root biomass and vegetation structure, but deepened snow increased overall surface roughness by promoting AGB. Hence, our study demonstrates that deepened snow can alleviate soil C loss due to land‐use practices by promoting AGB. Grassland is one of the largest terrestrial biomes, providing critical ecosystem services such as food production, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation. Global climate change and land-use intensification have been causing grassland degradation and desertification worldwide. As one of the primary medium for ecosystem energy flow and biogeochemical cycling, grassland carbon (C) cycling is the most fundamental process for maintaining ecosystem services. In this review, we first summarize recent advances in our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning spatial and temporal patterns of the grassland C cycle, discuss the importance of grasslands in regulating inter- and intra-annual variations in global C fluxes, and explore the previously unappreciated complexity in abiotic processes controlling the grassland C balance, including soil inorganic C accumulation, photochemical and thermal degradation, and wind erosion. We also discuss how climate and land-use changes could alter the grassland C balance by modifying the water budget, nutrient cycling and additional plant and soil processes. Further, we examine why and how increasing aridity and improper land use may induce significant losses in grassland C stocks. Finally, we identify several priorities for future grassland C research, including improving understanding of abiotic processes in the grassland C cycle, strengthening monitoring of grassland C dynamics by integrating ground inventory, flux monitoring, and modern remote sensing techniques, and selecting appropriate plant species combinations with suitable traits and strong resistance to climate fluctuations, which would help design sustainable grassland restoration strategies in a changing climate., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest in this work., (© 2022 The Authors.
