Background: Colonic lymphoma is an uncommon presentation of extranodal lymphoma. Colonic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma is a different entity from gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, and very rare. The presentation and management of colonic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue are highly variable in the literature.Case Presentation: We report the case of a 59-year-old Taiwanese man who underwent a colonoscopy after a positive test for fecal occult blood. His past history included hypertension and hyperthyroidism. The colonoscopy revealed an adenomatous polyp and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. We successfully performed a polypectomy and endoscopic mucosal resection. The lymphoma was staged according to the Ann Arbor system modified by Musshoff as E-I. Our patient showed no lymphoma recurrence over a 3-year follow-up.Conclusions: Endoscopic mucosal resection for colonic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma without disseminated disease may be feasible. We successfully used colonoscopic treatment without adjuvant therapy to treat early-stage pathogen-free colonic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain infanticide, killing the young or destruction of eggs by conspecific adults. We report cases of infanticide in the polyandrous pheasant-tailed jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus) of Taiwan. In 2004, three males and one female bred at our study site. The female mated with the three males sequentially and laid clutches for all of them. Infanticidal behaviour was observed in all males and in all but one clutch, the first clutch of the breeding season. The infanticidal males threw out the first one or two eggs of a clutch, but then accepted replacement eggs and incubated normally. Because the intervals between copulation with different males were short (1-10 days) and sperm can remain viable within the female reproductive tract for at least 4-5 days, sperm competition among the males may have been intense, and the paternity of the first few eggs in each clutch was doubtful. We suggest that male pheasant-tailed jacana may use infanticide as a strategy to avoid cuckoldry when the paternity of eggs is in doubt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Black-faced Spoonbills (Platalea minor) are listed as Endangered. More than 50% of these spoonbills winter regularly on the southwest coast of Taiwan. We used long-term population trend models to analyze 3 different datasets: (1) a biweekly census of 16 sampling sites in 3 habitat regions in southwest Taiwan 2007–2022, (2) a country-wide census of spoonbills 1991–2022, and (3) a worldwide census 2003–2022. From the biweekly monitoring data from southwest Taiwan, we found divergent spoonbill population trends and rates of habitat use in the 3 different habitat regions surveyed: a 2.8% per year increase in the number of birds wintering in the newly established Budai-Beimen Wetlands, a 2.6% per year decrease in the Cigu Salt Pan-Zengwun Estuary population, and a stable population in Sihcao-Yongan Wetlands. The result of biweekly monitoring data and the population time series analysis showed that in the late wintering period of each year, the combined habitat use rate was only 75.1% of the previous year's, a rate driven down by the Cigu Salt Pan-Zengwun Estuary population whose habitat use rate is only 59.0%. From the 1991–2022 Taiwan country-wide and global datasets, we found a linear trend showing the Black-billed Spoonbill population has increased at a rate of 10.4% and 10.3% per year, respectively. During the most recent 15 years, the population growth rate of this bird has significantly slowed down worldwide, with a rate of increase of 8.4% per year.
