5. Multilevel Hollow‐Structured Particles through Halogen‐Bond Regulated Polymer Assembly under 3D Confinement.

Abstract

Engineering of hollow particles with tunable internal structures often requires complicated processes and/or invasive cleavage. Halogen‐bond driven 3D confined‐assembly of block copolymers has shed light on the engineering of polymer organization along with the fabricating of unique nanostructures. Herein, a family of multilevel hollow‐structured particles (e.g., fully porous, multi‐chamber, multi‐shell, and concentric multi‐layer architectures) is reported via halogen‐bond regulated 3D confined‐assembly of amphiphilic polymer networks. To do so, polystyrene‐b‐poly(2‐vinyl pyridine)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PS‐b‐P2VP‐b‐PEO) amphiphilic triblock copolymer is selected, where P2VP blocks act as halogen acceptor. Meanwhile, poly(3‐(2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro‐4‐iodophenoxy) propyl acrylate) (PTFIPA) is employed as halogen donor. Halogen‐bond driven donor‐acceptor linking between PTFIPA and P2VP block presented in PS‐b‐P2VP‐b‐PEO, can lead to the formation of supramolecular polymeric networks, along with the increased P2VP domain and tunable hydrophobic volume. Therefore, an adjustable packing parameter (p) is thus anticipated, which can enable the morphology transformation sequence until an equilibrium state is reached. Moreover, computer simulations are further utilized as the tool to interpret such morphologies transition and identify the precise distribution of each component. Benefiting from the tunable hollow structure and a substantial surface for transporting purpose, these structurally novel particles open perspectives toward promising applications including encapsulation, nanoreactor, and catalyst support. 7. Recent Progress in Janus Nano‐Objects with Asymmetric Polymer Brushes.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, Janus materials have drawn much interest owing to the combination of two different functionalities on the opposite sides. Janus nano‐objects (JNOs) with asymmetric polymer brushes are one unique material of them, which consist of a polymeric or inorganic core and asymmetric polymer chains coated on the core. Combining the properties of nanomaterials, asymmetric structures and flexible polymer brushes, hairy JNOs have shown great potential in interfacial compatibilization, interfacial catalysis, oil‐water separation and drug delivery. This review summarizes recent progress in the preparation strategies of JNOs with asymmetric polymer brushes via self‐assembly or grafting strategies, as well as their applications in interfacial engineering, biomedicine and other aspects. Abstract

Nanoparticle (NP) superlattices are periodic arrays of nanoscale building blocks. Because of the collective effect between functional NPs, NP superlattices can exhibit exciting new properties that are distinct from those of individual NPs or corresponding bulk materials. In particular, two-dimensional (2D) NP superlattices have attracted increasing attention due to their emerging applications in micro/opto-electronics, catalysis, sensing, and other fields. Among various preparation methods, evaporation-induced interfacial self-assembly has become the most popular method for preparing 2D NP superlattices because it is a simple, low-cost, and scalable process that can be widely applied to various NPs. Introducing soft ligands, such as polymers, can not only provide convenience in controlling the self-assembly process and tuning superlattice structures but also improve the properties of 2D NP superlattices. This feature article focuses on the methods of evaporation-induced self-assembly of polymer-grafted Au NPs into free-standing 2D NP superlattice films at air/liquid interfaces and 2D NP superlattice coatings on substrates, followed by studies on in situ tracking of the self-assembly evolution process through small-angle X-ray scattering. Their application in nano-floating gate memory devices is also included. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of this direction are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Monodispersed polymer particles with tunable surface structures: Droplet microfluidic‐assistedfabrication and biomedical applications

Abstract

Polymer particles are key materials in various biomedical applications, including drug delivery, cellular immunity, cell capture, biochip, etc. Droplets produced by microfluidics have been widely applied as templates for the fabrication of polymer particles with controllable sizes and narrow size distributions. Compared to smooth polymer particles, those with surface microstructures (e.g., tentacles, bubbles, wrinkles and pits) are more attractive due to their increased surface area and biomimetic structural characteristics. In this review, we summarized representative methods for the preparation of monodispersed polymer particles with various surface microstructures based on droplet microfluidics, as well as their typical bioapplications in drug delivery, cellular immunity and cell capture. Finally, the current challenges and further development in this research area are discussed.

Abstract

Responsive colloidal polymer particles with well‐defined shapes and ordered internal mesostructures are attracting increasing attention because of their potential applications in sensors, catalysis, nano‐drug carriers, color pigments, and others. Recently, 3D confined assembly of block copolymers in emulsion droplets has emerged as a promising method for fabrication of colloidal polymer particles with controllable shapes and internal structures. In this paper, the recent advances in engineering anisotropically shaped and internally ordered colloidal polymer particles are summarized, followed by highlighting their stimuli‐responsiveness and emerging applications. 32. Using Dynamic Covalent Chemistry To Drive Morphological Transitions: Controlled Release of Encapsulated Nanoparticles from Block Copolymer Vesicles

Dynamic covalent chemistry is exploited to drive morphological order-order transitions to achieve the controlled release of a model payload (e.g., silica nanoparticles) encapsulated within block copolymer vesicles. More specifically, poly(glycerol monomethacrylate)-poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (PGMA-PHPMA) diblock copolymer vesicles were prepared via aqueous polymerization-induced self-assembly in either the presence or absence of silica nanoparticles. Addition of 3-aminophenylboronic acid (APBA) to such vesicles results in specific binding of this reagent to some of the pendent cis-diol groups on the hydrophilic PGMA chains to form phenylboronate ester bonds in mildly alkaline aqueous solution (pH ∼ 10). This leads to a subtle increase in the effective volume fraction of this stabilizer block, which in turn causes a reduction in the packing parameter and hence induces a vesicle-to-worm (or vesicle-to-sphere) morphological transition. The evolution in copolymer morphology (and the associated sol-gel transitions) was monitored using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, oscillatory rheology, and small-angle X-ray scattering. In contrast to the literature, in situ release of encapsulated silica nanoparticles is achieved via vesicle dissociation at room temperature; moreover, the rate of release can be fine-tuned by varying the solution pH and/or the APBA concentration. Furthermore, this strategy also works (i) for relatively thick-walled vesicles that do not normally exhibit stimulus-responsive behavior and (ii) in the presence of added salt. This novel molecular recognition strategy to trigger morphological transitions via dynamic covalent chemistry offers considerable scope for the design of new stimulus-responsive copolymer vesicles (and hydrogels) for targeted delivery and controlled release of cargoes. In particular, the conditions used in this new approach are relevant to liquid laundry formulations, whereby enzymes require protection to prevent their deactivation by bleach.

38. Functional Materials of 2D Self-Assembled Nanoparticle Monolayers: Preparation and Application

Abstract

Interest in developing nanoparticle (NP) monolayers via 2D self-assembly and their emerging applications in functional coatings and thin-film devices has dramatically increased in recent years. Self-assembled NP monolayers can exhibit unique physical and chemical properties that are distinct from those of individual NPs or corresponding holistic thin films due to the steric independence but functional coupling between NPs, as well as synergistic effects between NPs and the spacer medium. Efforts are focused on the fabrication of macroscopic-scale uniform NP monolayers with tunable internal structures, as well as the modification of NP monolayers for beneficial mechanical properties and strong adhesion with substrates. In this Review, we offer some highlights of the recent progress in the preparation of NP monolayers and challenges to be overcome toward applications in catalysis, sensing, photovoltaics, and information storage.
