19. Selenium Supplementation Sensor Based on Direct Electrochemistry of Urinary Selenosugar and Total Selenium

Abstract

Emerging point-of-care testing methods are extremely beneficial for personalized assessments of trace element metabolism including selenium (Se). Given the lack of timely evaluation methods for well-received Se fortification, an electrochemical solution was developed based on the recently identified urinary selenosugar (Sel) as a marker. The Se content of crude urine was rapidly determined (∼5 min), and the square-wave voltammetric responses of a Se-selective probe (SeSE) composed of liquid metal amalgam demonstrated comparable performance (e.g., detection limit: 19 nM) to central lab benchtop equipment within the physiological range. Meanwhile, SeSE enabled total urinary Se detection via a mere one-step oxidation. Additionally, SeSE was utilized to jointly assess the apparent internalization and utilization rate of two typical nutrients, selenite and selenomethionine, in a rat nutrition model, demonstrating consistent results with those obtained by HPLC–MS and ICP-MS. Upon systematic standardization directed by Ramaley’s theory, SeSE was integrated into a battery-operated portable kit (dubbed “SeEye”) with a micro electrochemical drive and tablet PC console for one-stop service trials in a local commercial scenario. This study establishes (1) a nutritive value classifier in a low-cost consumer electronic format and (2) noninvasive diagnostic technology for Se supplementation.

Abstract

Zinc‐ion hybrid capacitors (ZICs) are of interest for their optimal balance between power and energy density. Among the cathode materials, silicon is particularly attractive due to its abundance and potential compatibility with the microelectronics industry. However, silicon‐based materials exhibit specific capacitances far below 100 mF cm−2 because of their inherently low electronic and ionic transport, making them less competitive than other nanomaterials such as carbon and MXenes. In this study, state‐of‐the‐art silicon‐based ZICs using Mg‐doped porous silicon (PSi) derived from silica aerogels are constructed. The improved electronic conductivity achieved by Mg doping, combined with enhanced ion diffusion promoted by the porous structure, results in excellent electrochemical properties of the ZIC. Consequently, the prepared ZIC exhibits a specific capacitance of 106.1 mF cm−2 at 0.2 mA cm−2 with remarkable cyclic stability (92% retention after 20 000 cycles). Additionally, the pouch ZICs using gel electrolytes demonstrate good rate capability and a long lifespan, indicating significant potential for practical applications. Abstract

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is a powerful technique for the regulation of protein homeostasis. Current TPD mainly focuses on the therapeutical consequences rather than the operation processes of the molecular tools. Herein, a platform for precise manipulation of the protein degradation by activatable lysosome targeting DNA nanodevices is constructed. In the design, a lysosome‐targeting CD63 aptamer is locked by the single‐stranded DNA with a photocleavable group and a disulfide bond. This locked CD63 aptamer is connected with the aptamer targeting the protein of interest via double‐stranded DNA linkages to form the logic‐gate activated lysosome targeting DNA nanodevice (LALTD). With the UV light and endogenous GSH as inputs, an AND logic gate is built to efficiently manipulate the protein delivery processes by LALTD. The protein of interest can be degraded via efficient lysosome hydrolysis. Further studies show that the logic‐gate operation can be used for modulating T cell‐mediated antitumor immunity. The modularly designed activatable lysosome targeting DNA nanodevices exhibits good stability, controllability, programmability, and universality, providing a new prospect for accurate protein degradation and precise therapy. Abstract

A porphyrin-based electro-photodynamic imaging system was fabricated for monitoring the concentration of oxygen. Distinct from the electrochemiluminescent (ECL) inability of numerous organic species in aqueous solutions, a strong and stable red irradiation at 634 nm could be stimulated electrochemically on zinc(II) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphine (ZnTCPP)/tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB) in the physiological condition. In terms of in situ electron paramagnetic resonance and ECL spectroscopies, the nature of ECL was thoroughly investigated, being exactly the chemiluminescence from singlet oxygen (1O2) produced during the successive electro-reduction of ZnTCPP. Meanwhile, the excellent film-making capacity of amphiphilic TOAB as a potent ion barrier granted the luminophores a micro-order and patternable electrode modification. 50. Chitosan Derived Carbon Matrix Encapsulated CuP2Nanoparticles for Sodium-Ion Storage

Abstract

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are more feasible for grid-scale applications than their lithium-ion counterparts when abundant sodium resources with an even geographic distribution are taken into consideration. However, developing an anode presents a major challenge since the standard graphite anode shows a limited Na-ion storage capacity. Here we report a CuCl2/chitosan monolith derived CuP2/C composite where CuP2nanoparticles are uniformly embedded in the carbon matrix. The strong chemical bonding between electron rich groups in chitosan and the heavy metal ion (Cu2+) plays a key role for the synthesis of the homogeneous monolithic composite, and chitosan derived carbon prevents Cu and CuP2particles from aggregation upon the following thermal reduction and phosphorization. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of small particle size and conductive carbon matrix, the CuP2/C composite, as an anode for SIBs, delivers a high reversible capacity of 630 mAh/g at a current density of 100 mA/g and a capacity retention ratio of 91% after 200 cycles, while bare CuP2shows a rapid capacity decay within 50 cycles.
