Abstract Iron is an essential biomineral in the human body. Here, we describe a subset of iron-loaded cancer-associated fibroblasts, termed as FerroCAFs, that utilize iron to induce immunosuppression in prostate cancer and predict an unfavorable clinical outcome. FerroCAFs secrete myeloid cell-associated proteins, including CCL2, CSF1 and CXCL1, to recruit immunosuppressive myeloid cells. We report the presence of FerroCAFs in prostate cancer from both mice and human, as well as in human lung and ovarian cancers, and identify a conserved cell surface marker, the poliovirus receptor. Mechanistically, the accumulated iron in FerroCAFs is caused by Hmox1-mediated iron release from heme degradation. The intracellular iron activates the Kdm6b, an iron-dependent epigenetic enzyme, to induce an accessible chromatin state and transcription of myeloid cell-associated protein genes. Targeting the FerroCAFs by inhibiting the Hmox1/iron/Kdm6b signaling axis incurs anti-tumor immunity and tumor suppression. Collectively, we report an iron-loaded FerroCAF cluster that drives immunosuppression through an iron-dependent epigenetic reprogramming mechanism and reveal promising therapeutic targets to boost anti-tumor immunity.

Abstract Lobopodians represent a key step in the early history of ecdysozoans since they were the first animals to evolve legs within this clade. Their Cambrian representatives share a similar body plan with a typically cylindrical annulated trunk and a series of non-jointed legs. However, they do not form a monophyletic group and likely include ancestors of the three extant panarthropod lineages (Tardigrada, Onychophora, Euarthropoda). Some species display astonishing protective devices such as cuticular plates and spines. We describe here the armor and molting process of Microdictyon from the early Cambrian of China. Microdictyon secreted ovoid paired cuticular sclerites that were duplicated in a non-synchronous way along the animal’s body. The reticulated pattern and cuticular architecture of these sclerites have similarities to extant armored tardigrades that recently served in hypothesizing that tardigrades are possibly miniaturized lobopodians. Ecdysis and hard cuticular protection are now well documented in the whole spectrum of early Cambrian ecdysozoans such as soft-bodied scalidophorans, lobopodians and fully articulated euarthropods. We hypothesize that the secretion of sclerotized cuticular elements periodically renewed via ecdysis was a key innovation that opened large-scale evolutionary opportunities to invertebrate animal life, specifically ecdysozoans, both in terms of anatomical functionalities and ecological success.

Coronary heart disease is a prevalent cardiovascular ailment globally, with myocardial infarction (MI) being one of its most severe manifestations. The morbidity and mortality of MI are escalating, showing an increasing trend among younger, highly educated individuals, thereby posing a serious threat to public health. Currently, thrombolysis, percutaneous coronary intervention, and coronary artery bypass grafting are the primary clinical treatments for MI. Although these methods significantly reduce patient mortality, complications often result in poor prognoses. Due to limitations in chemical synthetic drug research, the focus has shifted towards developing herbs based on natural substances. Natural medicines represent a novel approach for safer and more effective MI management and treatment. They can control multiple pathogenic variables by targeting various pathways and systems. This paper investigates the molecular mechanisms of MI and evaluates the application of natural products and medicinal plants in MI treatment over the past 5 years, demonstrating their specific good therapeutic potential and superior tolerance. These natural therapies have been shown to mitigate myocardial cell damage caused by MI through mechanisms such as oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, myocardial fibrosis, autophagy, endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitophagy, and pyroptosis. This review offers the latest insights into the application of natural products and medicinal plants in MI treatment, elucidating their mechanisms of action and serving as an important reference for MI prevention.

Extant ecdysozoans (moulting animals) are represented by a great variety of soft-bodied or articulated organisms that may or may not have appendages. However, controversies remain about the vermiform nature (i.e. elongated and tubular) of their ancestral body plan. We describe here Beretella spinosa gen. et sp. nov. a tiny (maximal length 3 mm) ecdysozoan from the lowermost Cambrian, Yanjiahe Formation, South China, characterized by an unusual sack-like appearance, single opening, and spiny ornament. Beretella spinosa gen. et sp. nov has no equivalent among animals, except Saccorhytus coronarius, also from the basal Cambrian. Phylogenetic analyses resolve both fossil species as a sister group (Saccorhytida) to all known Ecdysozoa, thus suggesting that ancestral ecdysozoans may have been non-vermiform animals. Saccorhytids are likely to represent an early off-shot along the stem-line Ecdysozoa. Although it became extinct during the Cambrian, this animal lineage provides precious insight into the early evolution of Ecdysozoa and the nature of the earliest representatives of the group.

Classroom learning behavior recognition can provide effective technical support for teaching and learning. However, in natural classroom teaching scenarios, classroom learning behaviors are often missed or falsely detected due to character occlusion and the small object. To tackle the above issues, this study proposed an improved classroom learning behavior recognition algorithm (YOLOv8n_BT) based on YOLOv8n. On the one hand, for the occlusion problem of classroom learning behaviors, this study incorporated the BRA into the Backbone to better capture feature information; on the other hand, for the small object problem of classroom learning behaviors for back-row-students, this study expanded a Tiny Object Detection Layer (TODL) to detect small targets better. Experiments show that the BRA and the TODL can significantly improve the model performance. The YOLOv8n_BT model, which incorporated both the BRA and the TODL into the YOLOv8n(baseline) model simultaneously, has the most significant performance improvement. Compared with the YOLOv8n(baseline), the YOLOv8n_BT model improved by 3.0%, 6.7%, 5.0%, 3.6%, and 9.0% on P, R, F1, mAP50, and mAP50-90, respectively. The detection performance of YOLOv8n_BT also outperforms other state-of-the-arts.

Abstract The recently released Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sample, Pantheon+, is an updated version of Pantheon and has very important cosmological implications. To explore the origin of the enhanced constraining power and internal correlations of datasets in different redshifts, we perform a comprehensively tomographic analysis of the Pantheon+ sample without and with the Cepheid host distance calibration, respectively. Specifically, we take two binning methods to analyze the Pantheon+ sample, i.e., equal redshift interval and equal supernovae number for each bin. For the case of equal redshift interval, after dividing the sample to 10 bins, the first bin in the redshift range $$z\in [0.00122, \, 0.227235]$$ z ∈ [ 0.00122 , 0.227235 ] dominates the constraining power of the whole sample. For the case of equal supernovae number, the first three low redshift bins prefer a large matter fraction $$\Omega _m$$ Ω m and only the sixth bin gives a relatively low cosmic expansion rate $$H_0$$ H 0 . For both binning methods, we find no obvious evidence of evolution of $$H_0$$ H 0 and $$\Omega _m$$ Ω m at the $$2\,\sigma $$ 2 σ confidence level. The inclusion of the SH0ES calibration can significantly compress the parameter space of background dynamics of the universe in each bin. When not considering the calibration, combining the Pantheon+ sample with cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations, cosmic chronometers, galaxy clustering and weak lensing data, we give the strongest $$1\,\sigma $$ 1 σ constraint $$H_0=67.88\pm 0.42$$ H 0 = 67.88 ± 0.42 km $$\hbox {s}^{-1}$$ s - 1 $$\hbox {Mpc}^{-1}$$ Mpc - 1 . However, the addition of the calibration leads to a global shift of the parameter space from the combined constraint and $$H_0=68.66\pm 0.42$$ H 0 = 68.66 ± 0.42 km $$\hbox {s}^{-1}$$ s - 1 $$\hbox {Mpc}^{-1}$$ Mpc - 1 , which is inconsistent with the Planck-2018 result at about $$2\,\sigma $$ 2 σ confidence level.

Abstract Temporally heterogeneous environments is hypothesized to correlate with greater plasticity of plants, which has rarely been supported by direct evidence. To address this issue, we subjected three species from different ranges of habitats to a first round of alternating full light and heavy shading (temporally heterogeneous light experience), constant moderate shading and full light conditions (temporally homogeneous light experiences, control) and a second round of light-gradient treatments. We measured plant performance in a series of morphological, biomass, physiological and biochemical traits at the end of each round. Compared to constant full light experience, temporally heterogeneous light conditions induced immediate active biochemical responses (in the first round) with improved late growth in biomass (during the second round); constant moderate shading experience increased photosynthetic physiological and biomass performances of plants in early response, and decreased their late growth in biomass. The karst endemic species of Kmeria septentrionalis showed greater improvement in late growth of biomass and lower decrease in biochemical performance, due to early heterogeneous experience, compared to the non-karst species of Lithocarpus glaber and the karst adaptable species of Celtis sinensis. Results suggested plants will prefer to produce morphological and physiological responses that are less reversible and more costly in the face of more reliable environmental cues at early stage in spite of decreased future growth potential, but to produce immediate biochemical responses for higher late growth potential when early environmental cues are less reliable, to avoid the loss of high costs and low profits. Typical karst species should be more able to benefit from early temporally heterogeneous experience, due to long-term adaptation to karst habitats of high environmental heterogeneity and low resource availability.

During the sea launch of a launch vehicle in low sea state, a rolling phenomenon of the launch vehicle has been observed. In rough sea conditions, launch may failure. This study utilizes dimensionality reduction-driven spatial system projection methods and virtual prototype modeling technology to reveal that the launch vehicle’s rolling is caused by differences in the motion paths of the center of mass. Additionally, during the prelaunch stage, the variation in the trajectory of the launch vehicle’s center of mass caused by the rolling and pitching motions of the transportation vessel has a significant impact on the roll motion of the launch vehicle. The motion in other degrees of freedom has minimal influence on the launch vehicle’s rolling. The minimum rocket rolling occurs when the dynamic coefficient of friction of the launchpad–launch vehicle contact is 0.05, and the dynamic coefficient of friction of the adapters and guideways is 0.4. The conclusions provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing the sea launch system and enhancing the reliability of sea launch in rough sea conditions.

Background: Attention problems are one of the core symptoms of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Previous studies have shown that physical activity intervention has a positive impact on executive function in children and adolescents with ADHD, but there is limited research on attention problems in school-aged children with ADHD. There are still uncertainties about the appropriate physical activity interventions to improve attention problems in this population. This study conducted a Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to physical activity intervention for attention problems in school-aged children with ADHD, providing a certain reference for precise intervention in attention problems for this population.Methods: We systematically searched the following databases up to October 2022: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, to identify RCTs that investigated the effects of physical activity interventions on children with ADHD. Two investigators independently conducted literature screening, extraction, and quality assessment. We performed a meta-analysis using Stata 15.1.Results: In total, we included 10 studies in this meta-analysis. The results indicated that physical activity intervention had a moderate effect in improving attention problems in school-aged children with ADHD (SMD = −0.48, 95% CI: 0.85, −0.07, p < 0.05). Furthermore, subgroup analysis showed that the effect of physical activity intervention was moderated by intervention type, frequency, and period, rather than the physical activity environment or single intervention time.Conclusion: Our study suggests that cognitively engaging exercise is more effective in improving attention problems in school-aged children with ADHD. Specifically, when cognitive-engaging exercise is used as the type of physical activity and the intervention frequency is less than 3 times per week, with an intervention period of less than weeks, it is most beneficial for improving attention problems in school-aged children with ADHD. However, we should also consider individual differences in children with respect to their ADHD symptoms and accurately evaluate each child’s specific symptoms before intervention.Systematic Review Registration: identifier (CRD42022363255).

Abstract Great attention is paid to the role of androgen receptor (AR) as a central transcriptional factor in driving the growth of prostate cancer (PCa) epithelial cells. However, the understanding of the role of androgen in PCa‐infiltrated immune cells and the impact of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), the first‐line treatment for advanced PCa, on the PCa immune microenvironment remains limited. On the other hand, immune checkpoint blockade has revolutionized the treatment of certain cancer types, but fails to achieve any benefit in advanced PCa, due to an immune suppressive environment. In this study, it is reported that AR signaling pathway is evidently activated in tumor‐associated macrophages (TAMs) of PCa both in mice and humans. AR acts as a transcriptional repressor for IL1B in TAMs. ADT releases the restraint of AR on IL1B and therefore leads to an excessive expression and secretion of IL‐1β in TAMs. IL‐1β induces myeloid‐derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) accumulation that inhibits the activation of cytotoxic T cells, leading to the immune suppressive microenvironment. Critically, anti‐IL‐1β antibody coupled with ADT and the immune checkpoint inhibitor anti‐PD‐1 antibody exerts a stronger anticancer effect on PCa following castration. Together, IL‐1β is an important androgen‐responsive immunotherapeutic target for advanced PCa.

BackgroundPrevious studies have shown that physical activity interventions positively affect core symptoms and executive functioning in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, comparisons between different physical activity interventions still need to be made. This study is the first to analyze the effects of 10 different types of physical activity on children with ADHD through a network meta-analysis.MethodsPubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for randomized controlled trials on the effects of physical activity interventions on children with ADHD. The search time frame was from database creation to October 2022. Two investigators independently performed literature screening, extraction, and quality assessment. Network meta-analysis was performed with Stata 15.1.ResultsA total of 31 studies were included, and the results indicated that perceptual-motor training was the most effective in terms of motor ability and working memory (SUCRA = 82.7 and 73.3%, respectively). For attention problems and cognitive flexibility, aquatic exercise was the most effective (SUCRA = 80.9 and 86.6%, respectively). For social problems, horsemanship was the most effective (SUCRA = 79.4%). For inhibition switching, cognitive-motor training was the most effective (SUCRA = 83.5%).ConclusionOur study revealed that aquatic exercise and perceptual-motor training had a superior overall performance. However, the effects of various physical activity interventions on different indicators in children with ADHD can vary depending on the individual and the intervention’s validity. To ensure an appropriate physical activity intervention is selected, it is important to assess the severity of symptoms exhibited by children with ADHD beforehand.

IntroductionRhizobacterial communities and their metabolites can affect plant growth, development, and stress resistance, as well as the biosynthesis and accumulation of bioactive compounds in medicinal plants. This relationship has been well-characterized in many medicinal herbs, although much less commonly in medicinal trees.MethodsHere, we analyzed the composition and structure of Cinnamomum migao rhizobacterial communities across nine growing regions in Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi, China, as well as differences in soil properties and fruit bioactive compounds.ResultsResults showed that the C. migao rhizobacterial communities exhibited high species richness, but location-specific differences in structure. Site-specific differences in soil properties and bioactive compounds were also observed. Furthermore, rhizobacterial community compositions were correlated with both soil properties and fruit bioactive compounds, metabolism-related functions were most common in C. migao rhizobacteria.DiscussionSeveral bacterial genera, including Acidothermus, Acidibacter, Bryobacter, Candidatus_Solibacter, and Acidimicrobiales, potentially promote the biosynthesis and accumulation of 1,8-cineole, cypressene, limonene, and α-terpineol, Nitrospira and Alphaproteobacteria may play an inhibitory role. Finally, our results emphasized the critical role that soil pH and nitrogen levels play in driving rhizobacterial community structure, and specific functional bacteria can also counteract with soil properties, Acidibacter and Nitrospira can affect soil pH and nitrogen effectiveness. Overall, this study provides additional insight into the complex correlation of rhizosphere microorganisms with bioactive ingredients and soil properties of medicinal plants.

Summary: Cell plasticity and neuroendocrine differentiation in prostate and lung adenocarcinomas are one of the major reasons for therapeutic resistance to targeted therapy. Whether and how metabolic changes contribute to this adenocarcinoma-to-neuroendocrine cell fate transition remains largely unclear. Here we show that neuroendocrine prostate or lung cancer cells possess mostly fragmented mitochondria with low membrane potential and rely on glycolysis for energy metabolism. We further show an important role of the cell fate determinant Numb in mitochondrial quality control via binding to Parkin and facilitating Parkin-mediated mitophagy. Deficiency in the Numb/Parkin pathway in prostate or lung adenocarcinomas causes a metabolic reprogramming featured with a significant increase in production of lactate acid, which subsequently leads to an upregulation of histone lactylation and transcription of neuroendocrine-associated genes. Collectively, the Numb/Parkin-directed mitochondrial fitness is a key metabolic switch and a promising therapeutic target on cancer cell plasticity through the regulation of histone lactylation.

Abstract Background The radiation of ecdysozoans (moulting animals) during the Cambrian gave rise to panarthropods and various groups of worms including scalidophorans, which played an important role in the elaboration of early marine ecosystems. Although most scalidophorans were infaunal burrowers travelling through soft sediment at the bottom of the sea, Selkirkia lived inside a tube. Results We explore the palaeobiology of these tubicolous worms, and more generally the origin and evolutionary significance of tube-dwelling in early animals, based on exceptionally preserved fossils from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte (Stage 3, China) including a new species, Selkirkia transita sp. nov. We find that the best phylogenetic model resolves Selkirkia as a stem-group priapulid. Selkirkia secreted a protective cuticular thickening, the tube, inside which it was able to move during at least part of its life. Partly based on measured growth patterns, we construe that this tube was separated from the trunk during a moulting process that has no direct equivalent in other scalidophorans. Although the ontogeny of Selkirkia is currently unknown, we hypothesize that its conical tube might have had the same ecological function and possibly even deep development origin as the lorica, a protective cuticular thickening found in larval priapulids and adult loriciferans. Selkirkia is seen as a semi-sedentary animal capable of very shallow incursions below the water/sediment interface, possibly for feeding or during the tube-secreting phase. Brachiopod epibionts previously reported from the Xiaoshiba Lagerstätte (ca. 514 Ma) also presumably occur in Selkirkia sinica from Chengjiang (ca. 518 Ma). Conclusions Our critical and model-based approach provides a new phylogenetic framework for Scalidophora, upon which to improve in order to study the evolution of morphological characters in this group. Tube-dwelling is likely to have offered Selkirkia better protection and anchoring to sediment and has developed simultaneously in other Cambrian animals such as hemichordates, annelids or panarthropods. Often lost in modern representatives in favour of active infaunal lifestyles, tube-dwelling can be regarded as an early evolutionary response of various metazoans to increasing environmental and biological pressure in Cambrian marine ecosystems.

The vast majority of early Paleozoic ecdysozoan worms are often resolved as stem-group Priapulida based on resemblances with the rare modern representatives of the group, such as the structure of the introvert and the number and distribution of scalids (a spiny cuticular outgrowth) and pharyngeal teeth. In Priapulida, both scalids and teeth create symmetry patterns, and three major diagnostic features are generally used to define the group: 25 longitudinal rows of scalids (five-fold symmetry), 8 scalids around the first introvert circle and the pentagonal arrangement of pharyngeal teeth. Here we describe Ercaivermis sparios gen. et sp. nov., a new priapulid from the early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte, characterized by an annulated trunk lacking a sclerotized ornament, four pairs of anal hooks and 16 longitudinal rows of scalids along its introvert and eight scalids around each introvert circle, giving the animal an unusual octoradial symmetry. Cladistic analyses resolve Ercaivermis as a stem-group priapulid. Ercaivermis also suggests that several biradial symmetry patterns (e.g., pentagonal, octagonal) expressed in the cuticular ornament, may have co-existed among early Cambrian priapulids and that the pentaradial mode may have become rapidly dominant during the course of evolution, possibly via the standardization of patterning, i.e., the natural selection of one symmetry type over others.

Abstract Background This study examined how rhizosphere fungi influence the accumulation of chemical components in fruits of a small population species of Cinnamomum migao. Results Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were dominant in the rhizosphere fungal community of C. migao. Pestalotiopsis and Gibellulopsis were associated with α-Terpineol and sabinene content, and Gibellulopsis was associated with crude fat and carbohydrate content. There were significant differences in rhizosphere fungal populations between watersheds, and there was no obvious change between fruiting periods. Gibberella, Ilyonectria, Micropsalliota, and Geminibasidium promoted sabinene accumulation, and Clitocybula promoted α-Terpineol accumulation. Conclusion The climate-related differentiation of rhizosphere fungal communities in watershed areas is the main driver of the chemical composition of C. migao fruit. The control of the production of biologically active compounds by the rhizosphere fungal community provides new opportunities to increase the industrial and medicinal value of the fruit of C. migao.

Abstract Background Cinnamomum migao is an endangered evergreen woody plant species endemic to China. Its fruit is used as a traditional medicine by the Miao nationality of China and has a high commercial value. However, its seed germination rate is extremely low under natural and artificial conditions. As the foundation of plant propagation, seed germination involves a series of physiological, cellular, and molecular changes; however, the molecular events and systematic changes occurring during C. migao seed germination remain unclear. Results In this study, combined with the changes in physiological indexes and transcription levels, we revealed the regulation characteristics of cell structures, storage substances, and antioxidant capacity during seed germination. Electron microscopy analysis revealed that abundant smooth and full oil bodies were present in the cotyledons of the seeds. With seed germination, oil bodies and other substances gradually degraded to supply energy; this was consistent with the content of storage substances. In parallel to electron microscopy and physiological analyses, transcriptome analysis showed that 80–90 % of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) appeared after seed imbibition, reflecting important development and physiological changes. The unigenes involved in material metabolism (glycerolipid metabolism, fatty acid degradation, and starch and sucrose metabolism) and energy supply pathways (pentose phosphate pathway, glycolysis pathway, pyruvate metabolism, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation) were differentially expressed in the four germination stages. Among these DEGs, a small number of genes in the energy supply pathway at the initial stage of germination maintained high level of expression to maintain seed vigor and germination ability. Genes involved in lipid metabolism were firstly activated at a large scale in the LK (seed coat fissure) stage, and then genes involved in carbohydrates (CHO) metabolism were activated, which had their own species specificity. Conclusions Our study revealed the transcriptional levels of genes and the sequence of their corresponding metabolic pathways during seed germination. The changes in cell structure and physiological indexes also confirmed these events. Our findings provide a foundation for determining the molecular mechanisms underlying seed germination.

Abstract To investigate whether f(R) gravity can relieve current $$H_0$$ H 0 and $$\sigma _8$$ σ 8 tensions, we constrain the Hu-Sawicki f(R) gravity with Planck-2018 cosmic microwave background and redshift space distortions observations. We find that this model fails to relieve both $$H_0$$ H 0 and $$\sigma _8$$ σ 8 tensions, and that its two typical parameters $$\log _{10}f_{R0}$$ log 10 f R 0 and n are insensitive to other cosmological parameters. Combining the cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillations, Type Ia supernovae, cosmic chronometers with redshift space distortions observations, we give our best constraint $$\log _{10}f_{R0}

Abstract Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition could affect various ecological processes in forest ecosystems, including plant litter decomposition and nutrient cycling. However, the mechanism of underlying litter decomposition and nutrient cycling of Cinnamomum migao under N deposition remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a simulated N deposition experiment including four onsite treatments to assess the effects of N input on C. migao leaf litter decomposition, nutrient release, and soil enzyme activity. The results showed that simulated N deposition significantly increased the amount of total residual mass and lignin and cellulose, decreased the decomposition rate, and suppressed net nutrient release. N input increased C, N, and P ratios as decomposition progressed, and the proportion of mass remaining was positively correlated with the proportions of lignin and cellulose remaining at the later stage of decomposition. The differences in soil enzyme activity were primarily due to enzyme type and sampling time. We conclude that simulated N deposition significantly suppressed the leaf litter decomposition of C. migao by mainly altering the chemical properties and suppressing the decomposition of the organic matter in leaf litter. Lignin might have played an important role in the loss of leaf litter biomass at the later stage of decomposition.

Cornea radius estimation is a key technique for 3D gaze estimation in the single-camera 3D gaze tracking system. Traditional methods with one-camera-one-light-source systems or one-camera-two-light-source systems cannot achieve 3D gaze estimation. The 3D line-of-sight can be estimated only when the cornea radius is pre-calibrated by the user. A cornea radius calibration method based on the iris radius is proposed in this paper for 3D gaze estimation in remote one-camera-two-light-source systems. We first calibrate the iris radius based on the binocular strategy, estimate the spatial iris center using the calibrated iris radius, and then calibrate the cornea radius by a set of non-linear equations under the constraint of equivalent distances from the cornea center to the iris edge points. The calibrated cornea radius is verified by binocular optimization constraints. Simulations and physical experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The iris-based cornea radius calibration approach is novel; it can be used to obtain the cornea radius and 3D gaze using remote one-camera-one-light-source or one-camera-multi-light-source systems.

Upconversion materials capable of converting low-energy excitation photons into high-energy emission photons have attracted considerable interest in recent years. However, the low upconversion luminescence seriously hinders the application of upconversion phosphors. Heavy lanthanide doping without concentration quenching represents a direct and effective method to enhance the emission intensity. In this study, Er3+ heavy doped Gd2(MoO4)3 phosphor with a monoclinic phase was prepared by a sol–gel process. Under excitation at 976 nm, Gd2(MoO4)3:Er3+ phosphor emitted remarkably intense green emission, and Er3+ concentration up to 20 mol% did not cause concentration quenching. Here, we discuss the upconversion mechanism and concentration quenching. When the Er3+ concentration was in the range of 30–60 mol%, the concentration quenching was governed by the electric dipole–dipole interaction, and when the concentration was greater than 60 mol%, the concentration quenching was controlled by the exchange interactions. The result provides a schematic basis for identifying a phosphor host with heavy lanthanide doping.

Abstract Nitrogen (N) deposition, a major phenomenon of climate change, is increasing with industrialization and more human activity and can affect litter decomposition. Yet it remains unclear whether N deposition will accelerate or inhibit the decomposition of litter in karst regions, which are characterized by P‐limitation or N and P co‐limited stress conditions in soil. Here, to document the influence of simulated N deposition on litter decomposition in karst, the leaf litter of Cinnamomum migao was studied, this being a dominant perennial woody plant endemic to karst landforms. We conducted a 300‐d field decomposition experiment with four treatments: control (CK); addition of (+) N at 50 kg⋅ha−1⋅a−1 (N1); +N at 150 kg⋅ha−1⋅a−1 (N2), and +N at 300 kg⋅ha−1⋅a−1 (N3), in southwest Guizhou, the largest karst region in China (n = 4 treatments). From each treatment, the litter samples’ remaining mass were measured during the decomposition period, in addition to their nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), carbon (C), and potassium (K) concentrations, as well as that of soils; the soil’s pH was also measured. The results showed that litter remaining mass increased significantly under nitrogen deposition, which, as expected, acidified the soil. Meanwhile, litter N, P, and K contents responded to nitrogen deposition, whereas C did not. Otherwise, no direct effects of nitrogen deposition upon soil nutrients were detected. The soil nutrient contents were related to the release of the elements in litter. In conclusion, nitrogen deposition suppressed the decomposition of C. migao litter in karst, but the nutrients of karst soil are mainly replenished by litter inputs.

According to the requirement of projectile long-travel and heavy-load automatic loading, a chain rammer with compact structure and forced ramming is designed. Based on virtual prototype technology, the virtual prototype model of the chain rammer is built. Adding driving according to the driving motor output characteristic, the dynamics simulation of the work process of rammer is carried out and the stability of chain drive ramming is analyzed. The results of simulation show that the projectile is stable in the forced ramming travel, the projectile at the end of the ramming can overcome the heavy load and accurately pushed into the chamber at a certain speed, the values can meet the requirements of automatic loading, and it is proved that the design is rationality.

Abstract In the statistical framework of model-independent Gaussian processes (GP), we search for the evidence of dynamical dark energy (DDE) using the “Joint Light-curve Analysis” (JLA) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sample, the 30 latest cosmic chronometer data points (H(z)), Planck’s shift parameter from cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, the 156 latest HII galaxy measurements and 79 calibrated gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We find that the joint constraint from JLA + H(z) + CMB + HII + GRB supports the global measurement of $$H_0$$ H0 by Planck collaboration very much in the low redshift range $$z\in [0, 0.76]$$ z∈[0,0.76] at the $$2\sigma $$ 2σ confidence level (C.L.), gives a cosmological constant crossing (quintom-like) equation of state (EoS) of DE at the $$2\sigma $$ 2σ C.L. and implies that the evolution of the late-time Universe may be actually dominated by the DDE.

Combined with the soft clay layer of Foshan metro, a back-analysis method combining model test and numerical simulation is developed. First, the similitude criterion for the model used in this study was derived from similarity theory and elasticity mechanics equations. Artificial clay is prepared by mixing kaolin, bentonite, loess, and river sand in proportions of 4 : 2: 3 : 1. Gypsum, water, and borax are mixed in proportions of 1 : 0.7 : 0.015 to simulate the tunnel lining. The model tests were carried out based on four load modes: the combination of mode 1, vertical load distribution and horizontal load linear distribution, mode 2, vertical load distribution and horizontal load parabolic distribution, mode 3, vertical load parabolic distribution and horizontal load linear distribution, and mode 4, vertical and horizontal load parabolic distribution. Then, the calculation model corresponding to the four load modes is established using ABAQUS, and the measured data is back-analyzed as the known quantity. The specific load values obtained were 359 kPa, 380 kPa, 361 kPa, and 368 kPa by the load-internal force curve. The bending moment and axial force are calculated by substituting the back-analysis load values back into the model and comparing the results with the measured values; it was found that the internal forces under the back-calculation load still deviated by varying degrees. By using the comprehensive error function E to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the four distribution modes, the comprehensive errors are 4.3%, 1.7%, 6.5%, and 5.9%, respectively. That is, the error of load distribution of mode 2 (the combination of vertical load distribution and horizontal load parabolic distribution) is the lowest and is highly consistent with the measured value, which is the closest to the characteristics of the load pattern of the stratum.

In this article, we study a class of two-dimensional nonlinear fourth-order partial differential equation models with the Riemann–Liouville fractional integral term by using a mixed element method in space and the second-order backward difference formula (BDF2) with the weighted and shifted Grünwald integral (WSGI) formula in time. We introduce an auxiliary variable to transform the nonlinear fourth-order model into a low-order coupled system including two second-order equations and then discretize the resulting equations by the combined method between the BDF2 with the WSGI formula and the mixed finite element method. Further, we derive stability and error results for the fully discrete scheme. Finally, we develop two numerical examples to verify the theoretical results.

In practical engineering, if the influence of noncoaxial stress and strain is not considered, part of soil deformation will be ignored, resulting in the structural design which is not safe enough. A series of undrained tests was performed on remolded loess specimens using a hollow cylinder apparatus to examine the coupling between principal stress magnitude and direction in these specimens. First, the elastic parameters of remolded loess were obtained, and these parameters were used as the basis for investigating the noncoaxiality of the soil body under principal stress axis rotation (PSAR). The effects of elastic strain, intermediate principal stress coefficient, and magnitude of the deviatoric stress on the noncoaxiality of remolded loess were also investigated. The results of these experiments show that remolded loess exhibits significant noncoaxial behavior during PSAR. The noncoaxiality angle of remolded loess cyclically fluctuates with increases in the principal stress angle. It was also observed that the noncoaxiality angle will be overestimated if the effects of elastic strain are overlooked. Reversals in the direction of PSAR cause dramatic changes in the noncoaxiality angle. Increases in the intermediate principal stress coefficient are accompanied by increases in the noncoaxiality angle, up to a certain degree; however, these changes do not affect the development of the noncoaxiality angle. In coupled rotational tests with a range of deviatoric stress amplitudes, it was observed that changes in the deviatoric stress amplitude will affect the development of the noncoaxiality angle; increases in the deviatoric stress amplitude cause the noncoaxiality angle versus principle stress angle plot to shift to the left gradually, thus accelerating the trends of the noncoaxiality angle. Increases in the cycle number also increase the noncoaxiality of remolded loess.

Drought stress is one of the greatest obstacles affecting field crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions, and its severity and frequency are expected to increase due to human-induced changes to the environment and climate. Drought has led to rocky desertification in Karst regions. Cinnamomum migao is a unique, fast-growing medicinal plant of Southwest China that only thrives in Karst regions. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) symbiosis alleviates drought stress in plants; however, establishment and function of the symbiotic interaction between AMF host plant in relation to the inoculation method remain unclear. Therefore, we conducted an experiment to investigate the effects of AMF species (Glomus etunicatum and Funneliformis mosseae) and two inoculation methods (seed vs. seedling inoculation) under drought stress on C. migao seedlings, and quantified mycorrhizal colonization, AMF spore density, root vigor, relative water content, C. migao growth, antioxidant enzyme activities, and osmotic adjustment. Inoculation with AMF (G. etunicatum and F. mosseae) positively affected the growth and root vigor of Cinnamomum migao under drought stress, regardless of the inoculation method. Additionally, both AMF species markedly upregulated antioxidant enzyme activities and osmotic adjustment substances, regardless of the inoculation method. Our results showed that the collective stimulatory effect of G. etunicatum is more efficient than that of F. mosseae. AMF application could promote afforestation with C. migao to prevent rocky desertification in Karst regions where water is the greatest limiting factor on plant growth and yield.

Continuous growth of building energy consumption CO2 emission (BECCE) threatens urban sustainable development. Urban form is an important factor affecting BECCE. Compactness is a significant urban morphological characteristic. There is currently a lack of research on the effect of urban three-dimensional (3D) compactness on BECCE. To clarify the research value of 3D compactness, we investigated whether 3D compactness has a stronger impact on BECCE than two-dimensional (2D) compactness. A total of 288 buildings of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) were divided into 5 zones according to building climate demarcation. As BECCE is affected mainly by four aspects (socioeconomic condition, building features, macroclimate, and urban form), the BECCE driven by urban form (BECCE-f) in each zone was calculated firstly using the partial least square regression model. Normalized compactness index (NCI) and normalized vertical compactness index (NVCI) were calculated with Python to quantify urban 2D and 3D compactness within a 1 km buffer of PBOC buildings. The mean NCI and NVCI values of each zone were adopted as 2D and 3D compactness of this zone. Gray correlation analysis of the five zones showed that the connection between the NVCI and BECCE-f is stronger than that between NCI and BECCE-f. Based on this, we believe that the emphasis of later research should be shifted to urban 3D form, not just 2D elements. 3D form can describe the real urban form in a more accurate and detailed manner. Emphasizing 3D morphological characteristics in studies of the relationship between urban form and building energy performance is more meaningful and valuable than only considering 2D characteristics. The impact mechanism of urban form on BECCE-f should also be analyzed from the perspective of 3D form. This study also provides beneficial solutions to building energy saving and low-carbon building construction.

Abstract For the first time, to search for sterile neutrinos in the framework of Finler geometry, we constrain four cosmological models using the most stringent constraint we can provide so far. We find that the Finslerian massless sterile neutrino model can, respectively, give a better cosmological fit to data and alleviate the current $$H_0$$ H 0 tension more effectively than the other three models. For the Finslerian massless sterile neutrino model, we obtain the constraint $$N_\mathrm{eff}=3.237^{+0.092}_{-0.185}$$ N eff = 3 . 237 - 0.185 + 0.092 , which is consistent with $$\Delta N_\mathrm{eff} > 0$$ Δ N eff > 0 at the 1.03 $$\sigma $$ σ confidence level (CL). This gives a very weak hint of massless sterile neutrinos and may imply the non-existence of massless sterile neutrinos in the Finslerian cosmological setting. For the Finslerian massive sterile neutrino model, we obtain the constraints $$ N_\mathrm{eff}=3.143^{+0.064}_{-0.066}$$ N eff = 3 . 143 - 0.066 + 0.064 , which favors $$\Delta N_\mathrm{eff} > 0$$ Δ N eff > 0 at the 1.47 $$\sigma $$ σ CL, and $$m_{\nu , \mathrm{sterile}}^\mathrm{eff} < 0.121$$ m ν , sterile eff < 0.121 eV at the 2 $$\sigma $$ σ CL which is much tighter than the Planck results. This very tight restriction appears to indicate the massive sterile neutrinos are also non-existent in the Finslerian scenarios. Consequently, one may conclude that the sterile neutrinos are possibly non-existent in the Finslerian universe. Our results are compatible with the recent results of the neutrino oscillation experiments implemented by the Daya Bay and MINOS collaborations and the cosmic ray one carried out by the IceCube collaboration.

Abstract Based on the assumption that the dark energy possessing bulk viscosity is homogeneously and isotropically permeated in the universe, we propose three new viscous dark energy (VDE) models to characterize the accelerating universe. By constraining these three models with the latest cosmological observations, we find that they just deviate very slightly from the standard cosmological model and can alleviate effectively the current $$H_0$$ H0 tension between the local observation by the Hubble Space Telescope and the global measurement by the Planck Satellite. Interestingly, we conclude that a spatially flat universe in our VDE model with cosmic curvature is still supported by current data, and the scale invariant primordial power spectrum is strongly excluded at least at the $$5.5\sigma $$ 5.5σ confidence level in the three VDE models as the Planck result. We also give the $$95\%$$ 95% upper limits of the typical bulk viscosity parameter $$\eta $$ η in the three VDE scenarios.

Abstract Background The colonial habit of Brandt’s vole (Lasiopodomys brandtii) differs from that of most other species of the genus Microtus. The demographic history of this species and the patterns shaping its current genetic structure remain unknown. Here, we explored patterns of genetic differentiation and infered the demographic history of Brandt’s vole populations through analyses of nuclear microsatellite and D-loop sequences. Results Phylogenetic analyses divided the sampled populations into three main clusters, which represent the southeastern, northeastern and western parts of the total range in Mongolia and China. Molecular data revealed an ancestral area located in the southeast of the extant range, in the Xilinguole District, Inner Mongolia, China, from where Brandt’s vole populations began expanding. A gene flow analysis suggested that the most likely colonization route was from the ancestral area and was followed by subsequent northeastward and westward range expansions. We identified decreases in genetic diversity with increasing distance from the founder population within the newly occupied regions (northeastern and western regions), clinal patterns in the allele frequencies, alleles that were rare in the original area that have become common in the newly occupied regions, and higher genetic differentiation in the expanded range compared with the original one. Conclusion Our results indicate that L. brandtii most likely originated from the southeastern part of its current geographic range, and subsequently colonized into the northeastern and western parts by expansion. The genetic patterns among the derived populations and with respect to the original population are consistent with that expected under genetic surfing models, which indicated that genetic drift, rather than gene flow, is the predominant factor underlying the genetic structure of expanding Brandt’s vole populations.

Abstract We propose a new pressure-parametrization model to explain the accelerated expansion of the late-time Universe by considering the baryon matter and dark contents (dark matter and dark energy) as a unified dark fluid. To realize this model more physically, we reconstruct it with the quintessence and phantom scalar fields, respectively. We use the recent cosmological data to constrain this model, distinguish it from the standard cosmological model and find that the value of the Hubble constant $$H_0=68.34^{+0.53}_{-0.92}$$ H 0 = 68 . 34 - 0.92 + 0.53 supports the global measurement by the Planck satellite at the $$1\sigma $$ 1 σ confidence level.

Purpose: To examine the longitudinal impact and mechanism of peer network status on university students' hurdle running academic records. Methods: Conduct a follow-up survey in the hurdle teaching, an experimental class, and analyze the data using the latent growth model. Results: (a) The intercept and slope of peer network status positively predict the slope of academic records. (b) Peer network status influences the slope of academic records through the slope of learning engagement, and the intercept of learning engagement acts as a masking effect between the two. (c) Personality traits moderated the relationship between peer network status and the academic records slope. Conclusions: (a) The impact of peer network status on academic records exhibits social effects. (b) The impact of peer network status on academic records has a double-edged sword effect. (c) Extroverted personality is most advantageous in enhancing peer network status and predicting the rate of improvement in academic records.

Abstract Background Miliary tuberculosis (TB) is an uncommon cause of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with a high mortality. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics, predictors and outcome of patients with ARDS caused by miliary TB. Methods A retrospective study was conducted among patients with a diagnosis of ARDS with miliary TB in four hospitals from 2006 to 2010. Medical records and laboratory examinations of these patients were taken during the first 24 h of admission. Results Eighty-five patients with miliary TB developed ARDS, 45 of whom survived (52.9%). The median age was 36.6 ± 12.5 years with 38 males (44.7%). Diabetes mellitus (DM) was the most common underlying disease (18.8%).ICU mortality was 47.1%. The time from admission to anti-tuberculosis therapy was 4.5 ± 2.0 days. Mean duration of mechanical ventilation was 8.5 ± 3.0 days in all patients. Duration of time to diagnosis, time from diagnosis to mechanical ventilation, and time to anti-tuberculosis therapy were significantly shorter in survivors than those in non-survivors. Diabetes mellitus (OR 5.431, 95%CI 1.471-20.049; P = 0.005), ALT (70-100U/L, OR 10.029, 95%CI 2.764-36.389; P = 0.001), AST (>94U/L,OR 8.034, 95%CI 2.200-29.341; P = 0.002), D-dimer (>1.6mg/L, OR 3.167, 95%CI 0.896-11.187; P = 0.042), hemoglobin ( Conclusions Accurate diagnosis, early initiation of anti-tuberculosis therapy and mechanical ventilation are important for the outcome of patients with ARDS caused by miliary TB. DM, ALT, AST, D-dimer, hemoglobin, and albumin are independent predictors of ARDS development in patients with miliary TB.

Abstract Background Stimulation of epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) increases Na+ transport, a driving force of alveolar fluid clearance (AFC) to keep alveolar spaces free of edema fluid that is beneficial for acute lung injury (ALI). It is well recognized that regulation of ENaC by insulin via PI3K pathway, but the mechanism of this signaling pathway to regulate AFC and ENaC in ALI remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of insulin on AFC in ALI and clarify the pathway in which insulin regulates the expression of ENaC in vitro and in vivo. Methods A model of ALI (LPS at a dose of 5.0 mg/kg) with non-hyperglycemia was established in Sprague-Dawley rats receiving continuous exogenous insulin by micro-osmotic pumps and wortmannin. The lungs were isolated for measurement of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF), total lung water content(TLW), and AFC after ALI for 8 hours. Alveolar epithelial type II cells were pre-incubated with LY294002, Akt inhibitor and SGK1 inhibitor 30 minutes before insulin treatment for 2 hours. The expressions of α-,β-, and γ-ENaC were detected by immunocytochemistry, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blotting. Results In vivo, insulin decreased TLW, enchanced AFC, increased the expressions of α-,β-, and γ-ENaC and the level of phosphorylated Akt, attenuated lung injury and improved the survival rate in LPS-induced ALI, the effects of which were blocked by wortmannin. Amiloride, a sodium channel inhibitor, significantly reduced insulin-induced increase in AFC. In vitro, insulin increased the expressions of α-,β-, and γ-ENaC as well as the level of phosphorylated Akt but LY294002 and Akt inhibitor significantly prevented insulin-induced increase in the expression of ENaC and the level of phosphorylated Akt respectively. Immunoprecipitation studies showed that levels of Nedd4-2 binding to ENaC were decreased by insulin via PI3K/Akt pathway. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that insulin alleviated pulmonary edema and enhanced AFC by increasing the expression of ENaC that dependent upon PI3K/Akt pathway by inhibition of Nedd4-2.
