Abstract

Abstract The year 2022 saw record breaking temperatures in Europe during both summer and fall. Similar to the recent 2018 drought, close to 30% (3.0 million km2) of the European continent was under severe summer drought. In 2022, the drought was located in central and southeastern Europe, contrasting the Northern-centered 2018 drought. We show, using multiple sets of observations, a reduction of net biospheric carbon uptake in summer (56-62 TgC) over the drought area. Specific sites in France even showed a widespread summertime carbon release by forests, additional to wildfires. Partial compensation (32%) for the decreased carbon uptake due to drought was offered by a warm autumn with prolonged biospheric carbon uptake. The severity of this second drought event in 5 years suggests drought-induced reduced carbon uptake to no longer be exceptional, and important to factor into Europe’s developing plans for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions that rely on carbon uptake by forests.

Abstract

We assembled homogenized long-term time series, up to 19 years, of measurements of net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) and its partitioning between gross primary production (GPP) and respiration (Reco) for five different ecosystems representing the main plant functional types (PFTs) in France. Part of these data was analyzed to determine the influence of the main environmental variables on carbon fluxes between temperate ecosystems and the atmosphere, and to investigate the temporal patterns of their variations. A multi-temporal statistical analysis of the time series was conducted using random forest (RF) and wavelet coherence approaches. The RF analysis showed that, in all ecosystems, the incident solar radiation was highly correlated with GPP and that GPP was better correlated with the temporal variations of NEE than Reco. The air temperature was the second most important driver in ecosystems with seasonal foliage, i.e., deciduous forest, cropland and grassland; whereas variables related to air or soil drought were prominent in evergreen forest sites. The environmental control on CO2 fluxes was tighter at high frequency suggesting an increased resilience to environmental variations at longer time spans. The spectral analysis performed on three of the five sites selected revealed contrasting temporal patterns of the cross-coherence between CO2 fluxes and climate variables among ecosystems; these were related to the respective PFT, management and soil conditions. In all PFTs, the power spectrum of GPP was well correlated with NEE and clearly different from Reco. The spectral correlation analysis showed that the canopy phenology and disturbance regime condition the spectral correlation patterns of GPP and Reco with the soil moisture and atmospheric vapour deficit.

Abstract

Leaf area index (LAI) is a key ecological indicator for describing the structure of canopies and for modelling energy exchange between atmosphere and biosphere. While LAI of the forest overstory can be accurately assessed over large spatial scales via remote sensing, LAI of the forest understory (LAIu) is still largely ignored in ecological studies and ecosystem modelling due to the fact that it is often too complex to be destructively sampled or approximated by other site parameters. Additionally, so far only few attempts have been made to retrieve understory LAI via remote sensing, because dense canopies with high LAI are often hindering retrieval algorithms to produce meaningful estimates for understory LAI. Consequently, the forest understory still constitutes a poorly investigated research realm impeding ecological studies to properly account for its contribution to the energy absorption capacity of forest stands. This study aims to compare three conceptually different indirect retrieval methodologies for LAIu over a diverse panel of forest understory types distributed across Europe. For this we carried out near-to-surface measurements of understory reflectance spectra as well as digital surface photography over the extended network of Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) forest ecosystem sites. LAIu was assessed by exploiting the empirical relationship between vegetation cover and light absorption (Beer-Lambert- Bouguer law) as well as by utilizing proposed relationships with two prominent vegetation indices: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and simple ratio (SR). Retrievals from the three methods were significantly correlated with each other (r = 0.63–0.99, RMSE = 0.53–0.72), but exhibited also significant bias depending on the LAI scale. The NDVI based retrieval approach most likely overestimates LAI at productive sites when LAIu > 2, while the simple ratio algorithm overestimates LAIu at sites with sparse understory vegetation and presence of litter or bare soil. The purely empirical method based on the Beer-Lambert law of light absorption seems to offer a good compromise, since it provides reasonable LAIu values at both low and higher LAI ranges. Surprisingly, LAIu variation among sites seems to be largely decoupled from differences in climate and light permeability of the overstory, but significantly increased with vegetation diversity (expressed as species richness) and hence proposes new applications of LAIu in ecological modelling.

6. Observing the Forest Canopy with a New Ultra-Violet Compact Airborne Lidar

Abstract

We have developed a new airborne UV lidar for the forest canopy and deployed it in the Landes forest (France). It is the first one that: (i) operates at 355 nm for emitting energetic pulses of 16 mJ at 20 Hz while fulfilling eye-safety regulations and (ii) is flown onboard an ultra-light airplane for enhanced flight flexibility. Laser footprints at ground level were 2.4 m wide for a flying altitude of 300 m. Three test areas of ~500 × 500 m2 with Maritime pines of different ages were investigated. We used a threshold method adapted for this lidar to accurately extract from its waveforms detailed forest canopy vertical structure: canopy top, tree crown base and undergrowth heights. Good detection sensitivity enabled the observation of ground returns underneath the trees. Statistical and one-to-one comparisons with ground measurements by field foresters indicated a mean absolute accuracy of ~1 m. Sensitivity tests on detection threshold showed the importance of signal to noise ratio and footprint size for a proper detection of the canopy vertical structure. This UV-lidar is intended for future innovative applications of simultaneous observation of forest canopy, laser-induced vegetation fluorescence and atmospheric aerosols.

8. High-precision datasets from monitoring stations based on eddy covariance measurements: what six years of quality evaluation process of ICOS ecosystem stations have to tell

Abstract

ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) is a Research Infrastructure aiming at getting a deeper understanding of the European Carbon balance by means of a network of monitoring stations, based on eddy covariance (EC) technique, spread out all over the European Continent, and continuously expanding. The Ecosystem Thematic Centre (ETC) coordinates the activities of ecosystem stations to ensure high-precision datasets and standardisation. The so-called Labelling procedure is made of two steps, conceived to guide the candidate stations to get the official ICOS label: the Step 1 is focused on the sensors’ setup and is structured as a discussion between the ETC and the station teams, while the Step 2 concerns the practical build-up of the station and the data evaluation. For stations with the stricter standards (so-called Class 1 and Class 2), some quality tests on the data are included: one on the EC data quality, two on the representativeness of the measured EC fluxes and one on the representativeness of the ancillary plots.Currently 58 of 86 candidate stations completed the labelling procedure, of which 30 Class 1 and 2. The more common fixes agreed in Step 1 are changes in sonic orientation and height or location, to better deal with fetch and canopy inhomogeneities. In Step 2, apart from increasing the signal resolution and fixing some metadata, a further correction of the location/height of the sensors led to solving the remaining problems. Overall, two thirds of the stations passed the three EC tests at the first try (all the wetlands, 74% of the forests, 33% of the crops), pointing at the efficiency of the Step 1 evaluations, while the remaining ten didn’t pass one or more of the two other EC tests, testifying that some issues are only discoverable from proper data analysis. About one third of the stations didn’t pass the ancillary representativeness test, all of them over forests: the most common solution was to add or move one or more plots.The results support the common knowledge that more complex ecosystems - not uniform canopy geometries, fast growing vegetation - are more likely to be affected by some data quality issue. This constitutes a crucial warning to researchers and technicians in the direction of properly considering the station characteristics when planning its setup and sampling design, as well as continuously checking the data produced, to ensure the production of high-precision datasets.

9. Comparison of soil organic carbon stock change with eddy covariance carbon balance at an ICOS crop ecosystem site reveals unexplained carbon losses

Abstract

According to the latest estimates, soils globally store 1500 to 2400 Gt of carbon (C) at a depth of 1 m in the form of organic matter. Almost the same amount of inorganic C is estimated to be stored at a depth of 2 m. Soils contain about twice as much organic carbon as the atmosphere and three times as much as vegetation. Small changes in this large soil reservoir could therefore have major effects on atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. Soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks are strongly influenced by land use, and soils have lost an estimated 140-150 Gt C globally due to disturbance and cultivation since agriculture began 8000 years ago. Global warming is disrupting the carbon cycle and could lead to a decrease in SOC worldwide. Increased nitrogen (N) deposition and intensification of N use in agriculture since the 20th century are also affecting soil inorganic carbon (SIC) stocks through carbonate weathering on agricultural sites, a process that could counteract efforts to increase SOC by changing land management.Long-term carbon observation sites, such as ICOS ecosystem sites, are unique networks for assessing soil carbon stock evolution by comparing changes in SOC stock over time through soil sampling with the annual ecosystem carbon budget combining CO2 fluxes through eddy covariance, carbon imports and exports through organic fertilization and harvesting, and dissolved carbon leaching. In this study, we compared the evolution of the SOC stock over 14 years with the carbon balance over the same period on the French crop site ICOS FR-Gri near Paris. The site is a wheat-barley-maize rotation with occasional oilseed rape. We find that SOC decreased by 68 ± 18 g C m-2 y-1 over the 14-year period in the 0-60 cm layer, with 70% of the loss coming from the 0-30 cm layer. Integration of carbon fluxes at field boundaries over the period 2006-2011 led to an estimated total carbon loss of 130 ± 110 g C m-2 y-1 in this field, an estimate close to pan-European studies (138 ± 239 g C m-2 y-1). Carbon leaching was estimated over the same period at 28 g C m-2 y-1 of which 21 g C m-2 y-1 was inorganic. The difference between the carbon balance and the SOC stock change amounts more than 50 of g C m-2 y-1, suggesting an additional carbon loss that may partly be carbonate weathering at a site that contains carbonates in part of the field.

Abstract

Understanding the critical soil moisture (SM) threshold (θcrit) of plant water stress and land surface energy partitioning is a basis to evaluate drought impacts and improve models for predicting future ecosystem condition and climate. Quantifying the θcrit across biomes and climates is challenging because observations of surface energy fluxes and SM remain sparse. Here, we used the latest database of eddy covariance measurements to estimate θcrit across Europe by evaluating evaporative fraction (EF)-SM relationships and investigating the covariance between vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and gross primary production (GPP) during SM dry-down periods. We found that the θcrit and soil matric potential threshold in Europe are 16.5% and −0.7 MPa, respectively. Surface energy partitioning characteristics varied among different vegetation types; EF in savannas had the highest sensitivities to SM in water-limited stage, and the lowest in forests. The sign of the covariance between daily VPD and GPP consistently changed from positive to negative during dry-down across all sites when EF shifted from relatively high to low values. This sign of the covariance changed after longer period of SM decline in forests than in grasslands and savannas. Estimated θcrit from the VPD–GPP covariance method match well with the EF–SM method, showing this covariance method can be used to detect the θcrit. We further found that soil texture dominates the spatial variability of θcrit while shortwave radiation and VPD are the major drivers in determining the spatial pattern of EF sensitivities. Our results highlight for the first time that the sign change of the covariance between daily VPD and GPP can be used as an indicator of how ecosystems transition from energy to SM limitation. Abstract

The FLUXNET2015 dataset provides ecosystem-scale data on CO2, water, and energy exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere, and other meteorological and biological measurements, from 212 sites around the globe (over 1500 site-years, up to and including year 2014). These sites, independently managed and operated, voluntarily contributed their data to create global datasets. Data were quality controlled and processed using uniform methods, to improve consistency and intercomparability across sites. The dataset is already being used in a number of applications, including ecophysiology studies, remote sensing studies, and development of ecosystem and Earth system models. FLUXNET2015 includes derived-data products, such as gap-flled time series, ecosystem respiration and photosynthetic uptake estimates, estimation of uncertainties, and metadata about the measurements, presented for the frst time in this paper. In addition, 206 of these sites are for the frst time distributed under a Creative Commons (CC-BY 4.0) license. Abstract

Leaf area index (LAI) is a key ecological indicator for describing the structure of canopies and for modelling energy exchange between atmosphere and biosphere. While LAI of the forest overstory can be accurately assessed over large spatial scales via remote sensing, LAI of the forest understory (LAIu) is still largely ignored in ecological studies and ecosystem modelling due to the fact that it is often too complex to be destructively sampled or approximated by other site parameters. Additionally, so far only few attempts have been made to retrieve understory LAI via remote sensing, because dense canopies with high LAI are often hindering retrieval algorithms to produce meaningful estimates for understory LAI. Consequently, the forest understory still constitutes a poorly investigated research realm impeding ecological studies to properly account for its contribution to the energy absorption capacity of forest stands. This study aims to compare three conceptually different indirect retrieval methodologies for LAIu over a diverse panel of forest understory types distributed across Europe. For this we carried out near-to-surface measurements of understory reflectance spectra as well as digital surface photography over the extended network of Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) forest ecosystem sites. LAIu was assessed by exploiting the empirical relationship between vegetation cover and light absorption (Beer-Lambert- Bouguer law) as well as by utilizing proposed relationships with two prominent vegetation indices: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and simple ratio (SR). Retrievals from the three methods were significantly correlated with each other (r = 0.63–0.99, RMSE = 0.53–0.72), but exhibited also significant bias depending on the LAI scale. The NDVI based retrieval approach most likely overestimates LAI at productive sites when LAIu > 2, while the simple ratio algorithm overestimates LAIu at sites with sparse understory vegetation and presence of litter or bare soil. The purely empirical method based on the Beer-Lambert law of light absorption seems to offer a good compromise, since it provides reasonable LAIu values at both low and higher LAI ranges. Surprisingly, LAIu variation among sites seems to be largely decoupled from differences in climate and light permeability of the overstory, but significantly increased with vegetation diversity (expressed as species richness) and hence proposes new applications of LAIu in ecological modelling.

Abstract

Since 1750, land-use change and fossil fuel combustion has led to a 46% increase in the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, causing global warming with substantial societal consequences. The Paris Agreement aims to limit global temperature increases to well below 2°C above preindustrial levels. Increasing levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), in the atmosphere are the primary cause of climate change. Approximately half of the carbon emissions to the atmosphere are sequestered by ocean and land sinks, leading to ocean acidification but also slowing the rate of global warming. However, there are significant uncertainties in the future global warming scenarios due to uncertainties in the size, nature, and stability of these sinks. Quantifying and monitoring the size and timing of natural sinks and the impact of climate change on ecosystems are important information to guide policy-makers’ decisions and strategies on reductions in emissions. Continuous, long-term observations are required to quantify GHG emissions, sinks, and their impacts on Earth systems. The Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) was designed as the European in situ observation and information system to support science and society in their efforts to mitigate climate change. It provides standardized and open data currently from over 140 measurement stations across 12 European countries. The stations observe GHG concentrations in the atmosphere and carbon and GHG fluxes between the atmosphere, land surface, and the oceans. This article describes how ICOS fulfills its mission to harmonize these observations, ensure the related long-term financial commitments, provide easy access to well-documented and reproducible high-quality data and related protocols and tools for scientific studies, and deliver information and GHG-related products to stakeholders in society and policy.

Abstract

Information about forest background reflectance is needed for accurate biophysical parameter retrieval from forest canopies (overstory) with remote sensing. Separating under and overstory signals would enable more accurate modeling of forest carbon and energy fluxes. We retrieved values of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of forest understory with multi-angular Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF)/albedo data (gridded 500 meter daily Collection 6 product), using a method originally developed for boreal forests. The forest floor background reflectance estimates from MODIS data were compared with in situ understory reflectance measurements carried out at an extensive set of forest ecosystem experimental sites across Europe. The reflectance estimates from MODIS data were hence tested across diverse forest conditions and phenological phases during the growing season, to examine its applicability on ecosystems other than boreal forests. Here we report the method can deliver good retrievals especially over different forest types with open canopies (low foliage cover). The performance of the method was found limited over forests with closed canopies (high foliage cover), where the signal from understory gets much attenuated. The spatial heterogeneity of individual field sites as well as the limitations and documented quality of the MODIS BRDF product are shown to be important for correct assessment and validation of the retrievals obtained with remote sensing.

Abstract

International audience; Abstract. The mechanistic model GO+ describes the functioning and growth of managed forests based upon biophysical and biogeochemical processes. The biophysical and biogeochemical processes included are modelled using standard formulations of radiative transfer, convective heat exchange, evapotranspiration, photosynthesis, respiration, plant phenology, growth and mortality, biomass nutrient content, and soil carbon dynamics. The forest ecosystem is modelled as three layers, namely the tree overstorey, understorey and soil. The vegetation layers include stems, branches and foliage and are partitioned dynamically between sunlit and shaded fractions. The soil carbon submodel is an adaption of the Roth-C model to simulate the impact of forest operations. The model runs at an hourly time step. It represents a forest stand covering typically 1 ha and can be straightforwardly upscaled across gridded data at regional, country or continental levels. GO+ accounts for both the immediate and long-term impacts of forest operations on energy, water and carbon exchanges within the soil–vegetation–atmosphere continuum. It includes exhaustive and versatile descriptions of management operations (soil preparation, regeneration, vegetation control, selective thinning, clear-cutting, coppicing, etc.), thus permitting the effects of a wide variety of forest management strategies to be estimated: from close to nature to intensive. This paper examines the sensitivity of the model to its main parameters and estimates how errors in parameter values are propagated into the predicted values of its main output variables.The sensitivity analysis demonstrates an interaction between the sensitivity of variables, with the climate and soil hydraulic properties being dominant under dry conditions but the leaf biochemical properties being most influential with wet soil. The sensitivity profile of the model changes from short to long timescales due to the cumulative effects of the fluxes of carbon, energy and water on the stand growth and canopy structure. Apart from a few specific cases, the model simulations are close to the values of the observations of atmospheric exchanges, tree growth, and soil carbon and water stock changes monitored over Douglas fir, European beech and pine forests of different ages. We also illustrate the capacity of the GO+ model to simulate the provision of key ecosystem services, such as the long-term storage of carbon in biomass and soil under various management and climate scenarios.

Abstract

The DynACof model was designed to model coffee agroforestry systems and study the trade-offs to e.g. optimize the system facing climate changes. The model simulates net primary productivity (NPP), growth, yield, mortality, energy and water balance of coffee agroforestry systems according to shade tree species and management. Several plot-scale ecosystem services are simulated by the model, such as production, canopy cooling effect, or potential C sequestration. DynACof uses metamodels derived from a detailed 3D process-based model (MAESPA) to account for complex spatial effects, while running fast. It also includes a coffee flower bud and fruit cohort module to better distribute fruit carbon demand over the year, a key feature to obtain a realistic competition between sinks. The model was parameterized and evaluated using a highly comprehensive database on a coffee agroforestry experimental site in Costa Rica. The fluxes simulated by the model were close to the measurements over a 5-year period (nRMSE = 26.27 for gross primary productivity; 28.22 for actual evapo-transpiration, 53.91 for sensible heat flux and 15.26 for net radiation), and DynACof satisfactorily simulated the yield, NPP, mortality and carbon stock for each coffee organ type over a 35-year rotation. Abstract

International audience; Evapotranspiration and energy partitioning are complex to estimate because they result from the interaction of many different processes, especially in multi-species and multi-strata ecosystems. We used MAESPA model, a mechanistic, 3D model of coupled radiative transfer, photosynthesis, and balances of energy and water, to simulate the partitioning of energy and evapotranspiration in homogeneous tree plantations, as well as in heterogeneous multi-species, multi-strata agroforests with diverse spatial scales and management schemes. The MAESPA model was modified to add (1) calculation of foliage surface water evaporation at the voxel scale; (2) computation of an average within-canopy air temperature and vapour pressure; and (3) use of (1) and (2) in iterative calculations of soil and leaf temperatures to close ecosystem-level energy balances. We tested MAESPA model simulations on a simple monospecific Eucalyptus stand in Brazil, and also in two complex, heterogeneous Coffea agroforests in Costa Rica. MAESPA satisfactorily simulated the daily and seasonal dynamics of net radiation (RMSE = 29.6 and 28.4 W m−2; R2 = 0.99 and 0.99 for Eucalyptus and Coffea sites respectively) and its partitioning between latent-(RMSE = 68.1 and 37.2 W m−2; R2 = 0.87 and 0.85) and sensible-energy (RMSE = 54.6 and 45.8 W m−2; R2 = 0.57 and 0.88) over a one-year simulation at half-hourly time-step. After validation, we use the modified MAESPA to calculate partitioning of evapotranspiration and energy between plants and soil in the above-mentioned agro-ecosystems. In the Eucalyptus plantation, 95% of the outgoing energy was emitted as latent-heat, while the Coffea agroforestry system’s partitioning between sensible and latent-heat fluxes was roughly equal. We conclude that MAESPA process-based model has an appropriate balance of detail, accuracy, and computational speed to be applicable to simple or complex forest ecosystems and at different scales for energy and evapotranspiration partitioning.

Abstract

International audience; Biomass as a resource, and as a vulnerable carbon pool, is a key variable to diagnose the impacts of global changes on the terrestrial biosphere, and therefore its proper description in models is crucial. Model-Data Fusion (MDF) or data assimilation methods are useful tools in improving ecosystem models that describe interactions between vegetation and atmosphere. We use a MDF method based on a Bayesian approach, in which data are combined with a process model in order to provide optimized estimates of model parameters and to better quantify model uncertainties, whilst taking into account prior information on the parameters. With this method we are able to use multiple data streams, which allows us to simultaneously constrain modeled variables at site level across different temporal scales. In this study both high frequency eddy covariance flux measurements of net CO2 and evapotranspiration (ET), and low frequency biometric measurements of total aboveground biomass and the annual increment (which includes all compartments), are assimilated with the ORCHIDEE model version "AR5" at a beech (Hesse) and a maritime pine (Le Bray) forest site using four to five years of flux data and nine years of biomass data. When assimilating the observed aboveground annual biomass increment (AGB_inc) together with net CO2 and ET flux, the RMSE of modelled AGBinc was reduced from the a priori estimates by 37% at Hesse and 69% at Le Bray, without reducing the fit to the net CO2 and ET that can be achieved when assimilating flux data alone. Assimilating biomass increment data also provides insight in the performance of the allocation scheme of the model. Comparison with detailed site-based measurements at Hesse showed that the optimization reduced positive biases in the model, for example in fine root and leaf production. We also investigated how to use stand-scale total aboveground biomass in optimization (AGB_tot). However, this study demonstrated that assimilating AGB_tot measurements in the ORCHIDEE-AR5 model lead to some inconsistencies, particularly for the annual dynamics of the AGB_inc, partly because this version of the model lacked a realistic representation of forest stand processes including management and disturbances.

Abstract

Process-based vegetation models are widely used to predict local and global ecosystem dynamics and climate change impacts. Due to their complexity, they require careful parameterization and evaluation to ensure that projections are accurate and reliable. The PROFOUND Database (PROFOUND DB) provides a wide range of empirical data to calibrate and evaluate vegetation models that simulate climate impacts at the forest stand scale. A particular advantage of this database is its wide coverage of multiple data sources at different hierarchical and temporal scales, together with environmental driving data as well as the latest climate scenarios. Specifically, the PROFOUND DB provides general site descriptions, soil, climate, CO2, nitrogen deposition, tree and forest stand-level, as well as remote sensing data for nine contrasting forest stands distributed across Europe. Moreover, for a subset of five sites, time series of carbon fluxes, atmospheric heat conduction, and soil water are also available. The climate and nitrogen deposition data contain several datasets for the historic period and a wide range of future climate change scenarios following the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, RCP8.5). We also provide pre-industrial climate simulations that allow for model runs aimed at disentangling the contribution of climate change to observed forest productivity changes. The PROFOUND DB is available freely as a SQLite relational database or ASCII flat file version (at https://doi.org/10.5880/PIK.2019.008). The data policies of the individual, contributing datasets are provided in the metadata of each data file. The PROFOUND DB can also be accessed via the ProfoundData R-package (https://github.com/COST-FP1304-PROFOUND/ProfoundData), which provides basic functions to explore, plot, and extract the data for model set-up, calibration and evaluation.

Abstract

The effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition (Ndep) on carbon (C) sequestration in forests have often been assessed by relating differences in productivity to spatial variations of Ndep across a large geographic domain. These correlations generally suffer from covariation of other confounding variables related to climate and other growth-limiting factors, as well as large uncertainties in total (dry + wet) reactive nitrogen (Nr) deposition. We propose a methodology for untangling the effects of Ndep from those of meteorological variables, soil water retention capacity and stand age, using a mechanistic forest growth model in combination with eddy covariance CO2 exchange fluxes from a Europe-wide network of forest flux towers. Total Nr deposition rates were estimated from local measurements as far as possible. The forest data were compared with data from natural or semi-natural, non-woody vegetation sites. The carbon sequestration response of forests to nitrogen deposition (dC / dN) was estimated after accounting for the effects of the co-correlates by means of a meta-modelling standardization procedure, which resulted in a reduction by a factor of about 2 of the uncorrected, apparent dC / dN value. This model-enhanced analysis of the C and Ndep flux observations at the scale of the European network suggests a mean overall dC / dN response of forest lifetime C sequestration to Ndep of the order of 40–50 g (C) g−1 (N), which is slightly larger but not significantly different from the range of estimates published in the most recent reviews. Importantly, patterns of gross primary and net ecosystem productivity versus Ndep were non-linear, with no further responses at high Ndep levels (Ndep > 2.5–3 g (N) m−2 yr−1) partly due to large ecosystem N losses by leaching and gaseous emissions. The reduced increase in productivity per unit N deposited at high Ndep levels implies that the forecast increased Nr emissions and increased Ndep levels in large areas of Asia may not positively impact the continent's forest CO2 sink. The large level of unexplained variability in observed carbon sequestration efficiency (CSE) across sites further adds to the uncertainty in the dC / dN response.

Abstract

The impact of atmospheric reactive nitrogen (Nr) deposition on carbon (C) sequestration in soils and biomass of unfertilised, natural, semi-natural and forest ecosystems has been much debated. Many previous results of this dC / dN response were based on changes in carbon stocks from periodical soil and ecosystem inventories, associated with estimates of Nr deposition obtained from large-scale chemical transport models. This study and a companion paper (Flechard et al., 2019) strive to reduce uncertainties of N effects on C sequestration by linking multi-annual gross and net ecosystem productivity estimates from 40 eddy covariance flux towers across Europe to local measurement-based estimates of dry and wet Nr deposition from a dedicated collocated monitoring network. To identify possible ecological drivers and processes affecting the interplay between C and Nr inputs and losses, these data were also combined with in situ flux measurements of NO, N2O and CH4 fluxes, soil NO3− leaching sampling, as well as results of soil incubation experiments for N and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, surveys of available data from online databases and from the literature, together with forest ecosystem (BASFOR) modelling. Multi-year averages of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) in forests ranged from −70 to 826 g (C) m−2 yr−1 at total wet + dry inorganic Nr deposition rates (Ndep) of 0.3 to 4.3 g (N) m−2 yr−1; and from −4 to 361 g (C) m−2 yr−1 at Ndep rates of 0.1 to 3.1 g (N) m−2 yr−1 in short semi-natural vegetation (moorlands, wetlands and unfertilised extensively managed grasslands). The GHG budgets of the forests were strongly dominated by CO2 exchange, while CH4 and N2O exchange comprised a larger proportion of the GHG balance in short semi-natural vegetation. Nitrogen losses in the form of NO, N2O and especially NO3− were of the order of 10–20 % of Ndep at sites with Ndep 3 g (N) m−2 yr−1, indicating that perhaps one third of the sites were in a state of early to advanced N saturation. Net ecosystem productivity increased with Nr deposition up to 2–2.5 g (N) m−2 yr−1, with large scatter associated with a wide range in carbon sequestration efficiency (CSE, defined as the NEP / GPP ratio). At elevated Ndep levels (> 2.5 g (N) m−2 yr−1), where inorganic Nr losses were also increasingly large, NEP levelled off and then decreased. The apparent increase in NEP at low to intermediate Ndep levels was partly the result of geographical cross-correlations between Ndep and climate, indicating that the actual mean dC / dN response at individual sites was significantly lower than would be suggested by a simple, straightforward regression of NEP vs. Ndep.

Abstract

Agroforestry systems (AFS) are complex to model mainly due to the high spatial variability induced by the shade trees. Recently, the microclimate and lighf heterogeneity issue in AFS has been addressed using the 30 ecophysiological process-based model MAESPA (Charbonnier et al., 2013; Vezy et al., 2018). MAESPA surpassed the classical sun/shade dichotomy in AFS (Charbonnier et al., 2014) and provided continuous maps of e.g. available light, light-use~ fficiency and canopy temperature within Coffea Agroforestry Systems (GAS). A step further was to design a crop model for Coffea grown under agroforestry that would benefit from this continuum to estimate ecosystem services on the long term and under climate change scenarios. We designed DynA_Cof, a new process-based growth and yield model to compute plot-scale net and gross primary productivity, carbon allocation, growth, yield, energy, and water balance of GAS according to shade tree species and management, while accounting for fine-scale spatial effects using MAESPA metamodels (Figure 1). DynA_Cof satisfactorily simulated the daily plot-scale gross primary productivity (RMSE= 1.69 gc m-2 d-1 on 1562 days) and the energy and water balances (RMSE: AET = 0.63 mm d-1 , H= 1.27 MJ m-2 d-1, Rn= 1.98 MJ m-2 d-1) compared to measurements from an eddy-flux tower in Aquiares (Costa Rica) and also the NPP for above and below-ground organs, coffee bean yield and shade tree wood production compared to a comprehensive database from this site.

Abstract

During land-aquatic transfer, carbon (C) and inorganic nutrients (IN) are transformed in soils, groundwater, and at the groundwater-surface water interface as well as in stream channels and stream sediments. However, processes and factors controlling these transfers and transformations are not well constrained, particularly with respect to land use effect. We compared C and IN concentrations in shallow groundwater and first-order streams of a sandy lowland catchment dominated by two types of land use: pine forest and maize cropland. Contrary to forest groundwater, crop groundwater exhibited oxic conditions all-year round as a result of higher evapotranspiration and better lateral drainage that decreased the water table below the organic-rich soil horizon, prevented the leaching of soil-generated dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in groundwater, and thus limited consumption of dissolved oxygen (O-2). In crop groundwater, oxic conditions inhibited denitrification and methanogenesis resulting in high nitrate (NO3-; on average 1140 +/- 485 mu mol L-1) and low methane (CH4; 40 +/- 25 nmol L-1) concentrations. Conversely, anoxic conditions in forest groundwater led to lower NO3- (25 +/- 40 mu mol L-1) and higher CH4 (1770 +/- 1830 nmol L-1) concentrations. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2); 30,650 +/- 11,590 ppmv) in crop groundwater was significantly lower than in forest groundwater (50,630 +/- 26,070 ppmv), and was apparently caused by the deeper water table delaying downward diffusion of soil CO2 to the water table. In contrast, pCO(2) was not significantly different in crop (4480 +/- 2680 ppmv) and forest (4900 +/- 4500 ppmv) streams, suggesting faster degassing in forest streams resulting from greater water turbulence. Although NO3- concentrations indicated that denitrification occurred in riparian-forest groundwater, crop streams nevertheless exhibited important signs of spring and summer eutrophication such as the development of macrophytes. Stream eutrophication favored development of anaerobic conditions in crop stream sediments, as evidenced by increased ammonia (NH4+) and CH4 in stream waters and concomitant decreased in NO3- concentrations as a result of sediment denitrification. In crop streams, dredging and erosion of streambed sediments during winter sustained high concentration of particulate organic C, NH4+ and CH4. In forest streams, dissolved iron (Fe2+), NH4+ and CH4 were negatively correlated with O-2 reflecting the gradual oxygenation of stream water and associated oxidations of Fe2+, NH4+ and CH4. The results overall showed that forest groundwater behaved as source of CO2 and CH4 to streams, the intensity depending on the hydrological connectivity among soils, groundwater, and streams. CH4 production was prevented in cropland in soils and groundwater, however crop groundwater acted as a source of CO2 to streams (but less so than forest groundwater). Conversely, in streams, pCO(2) was not significantly affected by land use while CH4 production was enhanced by cropland. At the catchment scale, this study found substantial biogeochemical heterogeneity in C and IN concentrations between forest and crop waters, demonstrating the importance of including the full vegetation-groundwater-stream continuum when estimating land-water fluxes of C (and nitrogen) and attempting to understand their spatial and temporal dynamics.

Abstract

Huit ans de travaux de recherche sur les services écosystémiques dans une grande ferme caféière du Costa Rica (observatoire collaboratif Coffee-Flux, en système agroforestier à base de caféiers sous de grands arbres d'Erythrina poeppigiana, surface projetée de couronne de l'ordre de 16 %) ont suggéré plusieurs applications pour les agriculteurs et les décideurs. Il est apparu que de nombreux services écosystémiques dépendaient des propriétés du sol (ici des Andisols), en particulier de l'érosion, de l'infiltration, de la capacité de stockage de l'eau et des éléments nutritifs. Nous confirmons qu'il est essentiel de lier les services hydrologiques et de conservation au type de sol en présence. Une densité adéquate d'arbres d'ombrage (plutôt faible ici) permet de réduire la sévérité des maladies foliaires avec, en perspective, une réduction de l'usage de pesticides-fongicides. Un simple inventaire de la surface basale au collet des caféiers permet d'estimer la biomasse souterraine et la moyenne d'âge d'une plantation de caféiers, ce qui permet d'évaluer sa valeur marchande ou de planifier son remplacement. Le protocole de calcul actuel pour la neutralité carbone des systèmes agroforestiers ne prend en compte que les arbres d'ombrage, pas la culture intercalaire. Dans la réalité, si on inclut les caféiers, on se rapproche très probablement de la neutralité. Des évaluations plus complètes, incluant les arbres, les caféiers, la litière, le sol et les racines dans le bilan en carbone du système agroforestier sont proposées. Les arbres d'ombrage offrent de nombreux servies écosystémiques s'ils sont gérés de manière adéquate dans le contexte local. Par rapport aux parcelles en plein soleil, nous montrons qu'ils réduisent l'érosion laminaire d'un facteur 2, augmentent la fixation de l'azote (N2) atmosphérique et le pourcentage d'azote recyclé dans le système, réduisant ainsi les besoins en engrais. Ils réduisent aussi la sévérité des maladies foliaires, augmentent la séquestration de carbone, améliorent le microclimat et atténuent substantiellement les effets des changements climatiques. Dans notre étude de cas, aucun effet négatif sur le rendement n'a été enregistré., Eight years of studying coffee ecophysiology and monitoring ecosystem services (ES) in a large coffee farm in Costa Rica revealed several practical recommendations for farmers and policy makers. The cropping system studied within our collaborative observatory (Coffee-Flux) corresponds to a coffee-based agroforestry system (AFS) under the shade of large trees of Erythrina poeppigiana (16 % of canopy cover). A lot of ES and disservices depend on local soil properties (here Andisols), especially erosion/infiltration, water/carbon and nutrient storage capacity. Therefore, for ES assessment, the type of soil is crucial. An adequate density of shade trees (rather low here) reduced the severity of leaf diseases with the prospect of reducing pesticide-fungicide use. A simple inventory of the basal area at collar of the coffee plants allowed estimating the belowground biomass and the average age of the plantation, to judge of its market value and to decide when to replace it. Coffee farms are probably much closer to C neutrality than predicted by the current C-Neutral protocol, which only considers shade trees. More comprehensive assessments, including trees, coffee, litter, soil, and roots in the C balance of the AFS are proposed. Shade trees offer many ES if they are adequately managed in the local context. As compared to full sun conditions, shade trees may (i) reduce laminar erosion by a factor of 2, (ii) increase N2 fixation and the % of N recycled into the system, thus reducing fertilizer requirements, (iii) reduce the severity of leaf diseases, (iv) increase C sequestration, (v) improve the microclimate, and (vi) substantially reduce the effects of climate change. In our case study, no negative effect on coffee yield was found.

Abstract

Drought and heat events, such as the 2018 European drought, interact with the exchange of energy between the land surface and the atmosphere, potentially affecting albedo, sensible and latent heat fluxes, as well as CO 2 exchange. Each of these quantities may aggravate or mitigate the drought, heat, their side effects on productivity, water scarcity and global warming. We used measurements of 56 eddy covariance sites across Europe to examine the response of fluxes to extreme drought prevailing most of the year 2018 and how the response differed across various ecosystem types (forests, grasslands, croplands and peatlands). Each component of the surface radiation and energy balance observed in 2018 was compared to available data per site during a reference period 2004–2017. Based on anomalies in precipitation and reference evapotranspiration, we classified 46 sites as drought affected. These received on average 9% more solar radiation and released 32% more sensible heat to the atmosphere compared to the mean of the reference period. In general, drought decreased net CO 2 uptake by 17.8%, but did not significantly change net evapotranspiration. The response of these fluxes differed characteristically between ecosystems; in particular, the general increase in the evaporative index was strongest in peatlands and weakest in croplands. The Integrated Carbon Observation System is a Pan-European distributed research infrastructure that has as its main goal to monitor the greenhouse gas balance of Europe. The ecosystem component of Integrated Carbon Observation System consists of a multitude of stations where the net greenhouse gas exchange is monitored continuously by eddy covariance measurements while, in addition many other measurements are carried out that are a key to an understanding of the greenhouse gas balance. Amongst them are the continuous meteorological measurements and a set of non-continuous measurements related to vegetation. The latter include Green Area Index, aboveground biomass and litter biomass. The standardized methodology that is used at the Integrated Carbon Observation System ecosystem stations to monitor these vegetation related variables differs between the ecosystem types that are represented within the network, whereby in this paper we focus on forests, grasslands, croplands and mires. For each of the variables and ecosystems a spatial and temporal sampling design was developed so that the variables can be monitored in a consistent way within the ICOS network. The standardisation of the methodology to collect Green Area Index, above ground biomass and litter biomass and the methods to evaluate the quality of the collected data ensures that all stations within the ICOS ecosystem network produce data sets with small and similar errors, which allows for inter-comparison comparisons across the Integrated Carbon Observation System ecosystem network.

Abstract

There is an urgent need for standardized monitoring of existing soil organic carbon stocks in order to accurately quantify potential negative or positive feedbacks with climate change on carbon fluxes. Given the uncertainty of flux measurements at the ecosystem scale, obtaining precise estimates of changes in soil organic carbon stocks is essential to provide an independent assessment of long-term net ecosystem carbon exchange. Here we describe the standard procedure to monitor the soil organic carbon stocks within the footprint of an eddy covariance flux tower, as applied at ecosystem stations of the Integrated Carbon Observation System. The objectives are i) to ensure comparability between sites and to be able to draw general conclusions from the results obtained across many ecosystems and ii) to optimize the sampling design in order to be able to prove changes in time using a reduced number of samples. When sampling a given site at two periods, the objective is generally to assess if changes occurred in time. The changes that can be detected (i.e., demonstrated as statistically significant) depend on several parameters such as the number of samples, the spatial sampling design, and the inherent within-site soil variability. Depending on these parameters, one can define the ‘minimum detectable change’ which is the minimum value of changed that can be statistically proved. Using simulation studies, we address the trade-off between increasing the number of samples and getting lower minimum detectable changes of soil organic carbon stocks.

Abstract

Intensifying the use of forest biomass to produce fuelwood, through the removal of harvest residues or reductions in rotation length, increases nutrient outputs and can ultimately lead to reduced soil fertility. We developed a modelling approach for the evaluation of different forest management options under future climate scenarios. This approach allows management systems to be evaluated in terms of their nutrient costs by quantifying several variables: nutrient outputs (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) resulting from harvesting, ecosystem N and P balances, and changes in organic C, N and P stocks in the soil. In addition, we calculated a “nutrient cost index” (in kg-harvested-biomass g-exported-nutrients−1). As part of this study, we looked at the effects of harvesting branches, foliage and stumps in addition to tree stems, as well as the effects of changing rotation length in Pinus pinaster, Pseudotsuga menziesii and Fagus sylvatica forest stands, under contrasting Representative Concentration Pathway climate scenarios (RCPs). Comparably to previous studies, our simulations showed that removing harvest residues and, to a lesser extent, reducing rotation length have high nutrient costs. Climate was also found to have an impact, mainly caused by larger amounts of standing tree biomass, and therefore larger biomass harvests and increased nutrient outputs in the scenario which involved elevated atmospheric CO2. Using contrasting forest management systems and climates, we showed that our modelling approach can be used to guide forest managers in their choice of future silvicultural practices (rotation length, conventional stem-only harvest versus intensive harvest, thinning regime) based on future climate scenarios. Finally, our approach can be used to determine, more accurately than simple allometric relationships, the amounts of nutrients that would need to be applied in order to compensate for losses.

Abstract

Global soil moisture (SM) products are currently available thanks to microwave remote sensing techniques. Validation of these satellite-based SM products over different vegetation and climate conditions is a crucial step. INRA (National Institute of Agricultural Research) has set up the AQUI SM and soil temperature in situ network (composed of three main sites Bouron, Bilos, and Hermitage), over a flat area of dense pine forests, in South-Western France (the Bordeaux⁻Aquitaine region) to validate the Soil Moisture and Ocean salinity (SMOS) satellite SM products. SMOS was launched in 2009 by the European Space Agency (ESA). The aims of this study are to present the AQUI network and to evaluate the SMOS SM product (in the new SMOS-IC version) along with other microwave SM products such as the active ASCAT (Advanced Scatterometer) and the ESA combined (passive and active) CCI (Climate Change Initiative) SM retrievals. A first comparison, using Pearson correlation, Bias, RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), and Un biased RMSE (ubRMSE) scores, between the 0⁻5 cm AQUI network and ASCAT, CCI, and SMOS SM products was conducted. In general all the three products were able to reproduce the annual cycle of the AQUI in situ observations. CCI and ASCAT had best and similar correlations (R~0.72) over the Bouron and Bilos sites. All had comparable correlations over the Hermitage sites with overall average values of 0.74, 0.68, and 0.69 for CCI, SMOS-IC, and ASCAT, respectively. Considering anomalies, correlation values decreased for all products with best ability to capture day to day variations obtained by ASCAT. CCI (followed by SMOS-IC) had the best ubRMSE values (mostly < 0.04 m3/m3) over most of the stations. Although the region is highly impacted by radio frequency interferences, SMOS-IC followed correctly the in situ SM dynamics. All the three remotely-sensed SM products (except SMOS-IC over some stations) overestimated the AQUI in situ SM observations. These results demonstrate that the AQUI network is likely to be well-suited for satellite microwave remote sensing evaluations/validations.

Abstract

Export of soil carbon to superficial water through the drainage of groundwater is a significant but poorly documented component of the continental carbon budget. We monitored the concentrations of dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC) in groundwaters and first order streams of a small temperate, forested and sandy watershed where hydrology occurs exclusively through drainage (no surface runoff). The studied watershed was also implemented for continuous measurements of groundwater table, precipitation, evapotranspiration, river discharge, and net ecosystem exchanges of sensible and latent heat fluxes as well as CO2. On a monthly basis, we found a good consistency between precipitation and the sum of evapotranspiration, drainage and groundwater storage. DOC and DIC temporary storage in groundwater and export to streams varied drastically during the hydrological cycle, the residence times of these two carbon forms varying from one month to several years. DOC concentrations in groundwater and streams were maximal at high water table and high stream discharge, when the water table reached the superficial organic rich layer of the soil. A large fraction of this winter DOC maximum was temporarily stored and further mineralized to DIC in the groundwater and only about 15 % was exported to streams during winter periods. In contrast, DIC, which was present in majority in the form of dissolved CO2 in groundwater and streams, was apparently diluted at high water table: DIC concentrations were maximum at low water table and low discharge in late summer and maximum pCO2 in groundwater corresponded to the late summer period of heterotrophic conditions (i.e., Reco > GPP). Groundwater DIC peaked in late summer and was followed by a rapid loss of excess CO2 from stream surface to the atmosphere. Overall, mean carbon export was 7.5 g C m−2 yr−1 (50 % as DOC and 50 % as DIC) and represented only 1.5 % of the NEE. About 65 % of the DIC exported from groundwaters returned to the atmosphere in the form of CO2 in first order streams.

Abstract

La présente étude a été réalisée par l’INRA et l’IGN et financée par le Ministère de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation (MAA). Le CGAAER avait en amont de ce travail pris l’initiative de solliciter l’INRA pour mener une réflexion de ce type dans les suites du rapport du Conseil général analysant la façon dont l’agriculture et la forêt françaises pouvaient contribuer à la lutte contre le changement climatique (Madignier et al., 2014). L’étude a été conduite par la Délégation à l’Expertise scientifique collective, à la Prospective et aux Etudes (DEPE) de l’INRA et selon les principes et les règles de conduite des expertises et des études qui régissent les travaux menés par cette structure.

Abstract

Chapitre 20; International audience; Climate change is one of the most challenging problems that humanity has to cope with in the coming decades. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2013) has concluded that the observed rise in global temperature is very likely due to increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere, caused by anthropogenic emissions. These increased concentrations of CO2 and CH4, which exceed by far the natural range observed over the last 650,000 years, and its impact on the global biogeochemical cycles are a major driving force of current and future climate change. The current levels of CO2 have increased by 40% from preindustrial times (Jackson et al., 2016). Moreover, the current atmospheric levels of CH4 are nearly two and a half times the preindustrial value. The main sources of anthropogenic CH4 emissions are fossil fuel combustion and modifications of global vegetation through land use change, in particular deforestation. Terrestrial vegetation and oceans absorb together about half of the yearly anthropogenic emissions (Le Quere et al., 2009). The question is whether these sinks will be persistent in the future, especially under changing climatic conditions and under increased human pressure. At the current atmospheric level of CH4, the natural oxidizing power of the atmosphere removes almost all the CH4 emitted by human activities and natural sources, but increased human activities are expected to increase emissions even further and result in elevated CH4 concentrations in the atmosphere (Kirschke et al., 2013).
