The abundance distribution and species richness of encysted plankton have been investigated in the bottom sediments of the Taranto Marine System (southern Italy) for contributing to the understanding of plankton dynamics in a confined coastal area. This confined area is characterized by four contiguous basins with different degrees of confinement. The investigation was carried out in the fall season with the aim to intercept a period of rich cyst production from the plankton before overwintering. From the analysis of a total of 36 sediment samples, from 12 sample sites, the highest abundance of cysts and species richness were registered in the confined part of the system. A total of 103 cyst morphotypes have been recognized in the whole area, with highest abundances and taxa richness in the most confined stations. These results, suggesting a benthic-pelagic exchange of living matter, more intense in confined environments than in the open sea, highlight the necessity of (i) including the analysis of sediment cyst banks in studies of plankton dynamics, and (ii) to consider the role of confined areas, where the variability of environmental conditions favours a higher planktonic biodiversity in the sediments than in the water column. Coastal areas are increasingly exposed to global warming and emerging contaminants from anthropogenic activities; however, the interactive effects of these stress factors in shaping the offspring's vulnerability to them are poorly understood. The present study aimed to assess the influence of temperature on the toxicity of the pharmaceutical carbamazepine (CBZ) in the parental (F0) and in the first (F1) generation of Tigriopus fulvus, through a full life cycle study, measuring several biological parameters. At control temperature (20 °C), exposure to CBZ significantly inhibited larval development, especially in the F1 generation. In contrast, under warmer conditions (27 °C), even after exposure to CBZ, the development was stimulated, proving that temperature was the main factor influencing it. As regards the other investigated life traits (body length, sex ratio, and fecundity), both temperature and generation modulated toxic effects of CBZ, which is evidenced by the onset of higher alterations in F1 co-exposed copepods. Our findings suggest that temperature and contaminants could increase the long-term vulnerability to stressors of T. fulvus, potentially affecting the population structure over multiple generations of exposure. The collection of photos during the systematic monitoring activities is useful to witness the ecological role of marine phanerogams as hosts for a rich variety of organisms in coastal and transitional waters. Cymodocea nodosa is present in the Taranto seas. In Mar Piccolo, it reached high coverage in a short amount of time, up to 100%, due to the improvement in environmental conditions. The most recent observations showed that it offers a welcoming habitat for several vertebrates and invertebrates, native and non-indigenous, as well as to micro- and macroalgae. The bivalve mollusc Pinna nobilis, endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, has been vanishing since 2016 from the whole basin because of an infection by multiple pathogens that caused mass mortality events. In the Eastern Mediterranean, some small populations seem to be resistant to the infection. These individuals could represent the only possibility for the species to recolonize desert habitats. Thus, according to the recommendations of IUCN, looking for living specimens of P. nobilis is a priority. With this goal in mind, we carried out surveys in different areas of Southern Italy, and in 2018, we launched a Citizen Science campaign to involve recreational and professional divers in this challenge. As a result of a monitoring activity carried out in 2022–2024, along the Ionian coast of Apulia, in Southern Italy, we can say that there are no more living specimens there but only empty shells. Concurrent to the vanishing of the queen P. nobilis, its congeneric P. rudis, resistant to the infection, seems to be taking advantage, becoming more common and colonizing habitats once exclusive to P. nobilis. In fact, from different areas of the Mediterranean, sightings of the new possible queen, P. rudis, are increasing, together with the discovery of individuals exhibiting morphological traits that are a mixture of the two species. In some cases, these morphological features are not easy to detect; nevertheless, the presence of these hybrids, resistant to the infection, is important for the conservation of the species.
