The main sources of radon in the air of dwellings are soil, building materials, and groundwater. This study aimed to determine the exhalation rate of 222Rn from samples made of concrete and cement mortars, as well as to evaluate by means of gamma spectrometry the hazard indexes associated with other radionuclides present in the studied samples of building materials. The results obtained allowed the comparison of the exhalation rate of radon using theoretical calculations based on one-dimensional and three-dimensional models. Measurements of the activity concentration of radon in air was performed by AlphaGuard radon detector. Furthermore, obtained results were compared with the measurements performed inside the concrete test cells. These test cells were built with the aim of simulating a dwelling in small dimensions and to evaluate indoor radon activity associated with concrete. Consequently, the obtained results of radon exhalation rate, in becquerel per meter squared per hour, for the concrete was 2.55 ± 0.03 Bq·h−1·m−2 for the 1D model and 0.461 ±0.008 Bq·h−1·m−2 for the 3D model. The exhalation rate of radon, for the cement mortar was 1.58 ± 0.03 Bq·h−1·m−2 for the 1D model and 0.439 ± 0.011 Bq·h−1·m−2 for the 3D model. The indoor concentration of 222Rn from the test cell was 112 ± 9 Bq/m3. These values were below the limit of 300 Bq/m3 recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and

DIGITAL mammography ,BREAST imaging ,RECEIVER operating characteristic curves ,FACTOR analysis ,ANALYSIS of variance - Abstract
Background: Appropriate mammary positioning is an important factor in optimizing image quality in mammography (MMG).Purpose: To study the correlation of quality criteria and breast density classification proposed by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and European Guidelines and its influence to achieve a proper positioning, therefore an adequate MMG.Material and Methods: A total of 128 routine MMG examinations were reviewed for the definition of breast composition parenchyma and assessment of several quality criteria proposed by the ACR and European Guidelines to achieve an adequate MMG. Adequate MMG was defined as a difference between the posterior nipple line (PNL), difference of the mediolateral oblique (MLO) and craniocaudal (CC) incidences > 1 cm. The quality criteria were analyzed as a function of correlation coefficient in order to evaluate the individual impact of each factor and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for all criteria. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to evaluate the performance of the criteria on each type of parenchyma. Results: Negative correlation of fatty breasts and visibility of the mammary angle, a greater number of skin folds and PNL > 1 cm (r < 0). Dense MMG presented less visibility of the lateral tissue compared with other categories. Area under the curve of ROC analysis revealed values of 53.1% and 54.7% for the right and left breasts, respectively. Conclusion: Several factors influenced in the MMG process, but we find that breast parenchyma has a substantial role in affecting these criteria and therefore a correct position for diagnosis, which could compromise MMG diagnostic performance. As argilas cosméticas apresentaram os elementos Mg, Al, P, As, Se, Ba, Co, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Sb, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Zr, Sr, Th, U, Pb e Ra. Studies of pediatric upper gastrointestinal series performed by fluoroscopy usually require professionals to remain within the examination room to positioning and immobilizing the patient. Knowing and reducing radiation exposure of these individuals is a constantly reported concern. Thus, the present study aimed to estimate the effective dose received by the team involved in pediatric Esophagus, Stomach e Duodenum Seriography. Dose rates and cumulative doses were measured using a parallel plate ionization chamber (Radcal Corporation, model 10X5-6, with a sensitive volume of 180 cm³), for each of the five examination steps. To simulate the occupationally exposed individual and the pediatric patient, two polyethylene dummies filled with water were used. Were also evaluated some technical parameters that influence dose distributions, such as collimation, isocenter distance, lead apron and additional filtration. The results were compared with the literature and with limits set by international standards. The estimate showed values slightly lower, but comparable, to typical medical doses of chest X-rays. The annual effective dose is capable of exceeding the International Commission on Radiological Protection threshold if expanded to hundreds of procedures. For different exam positions, the difference in dose rate is up to 14% and doses in radiography differ by a factor of up to 3.4. The contribution of radiographic images in the total dose may reach 30%, which emphasizes the importance of the last image hold for occupational exposure. The automatic brightness control increases the dose rate to compensate for collimator close. Regarding the variable distance, the dose rate follows the inverse square law, with an accuracy of better than 1%. For tube voltage of 83 kVp, the lead apron decreases the scattered radiation dose rate similar to 49 keV monochrome radiation. The additional filtration suggested by the European Communities reduces the dose rate by tens of percent. Thus, the optimization and standardization of technical parameters, following international recommendations, are sufficient to guarantee diagnostic quality and to reduce occupational exposures.

Radon-related research is required because of the carcinogenic potential of this gas, and the reference limits are subject of recommendations. For this research, radon concentrations were measured inside and outside of two prefabricated houses, built in an experimental environment, in UTFPR/Ecoville. One of these houses was built with building materials from the Czech Republic (1) and the other (2) with materials from Brazil. Whith this proposal, 40 CR-39 detectors were used. The average concentration for house (1) was 10,1±1,3 Bq/m³, for house (2) was 7,8±1,1 Bq/m³ and for the exterior was 11,5±2,9 Bq/m³. The values obtained were below 300 Bq/m³, thus, no mitigating measures were necessary. Besides, measurements were made of the number of thacks of alpha particles coming from common cement paste samples and from sand with high radon activity samples in order to identify the value of the emitting layer. For common cement paste samples of 1.5, 2.6, 3.8 and 4.6 cm of thickness, the number os tracks was 762±25, 799±51, 814±31, 791±45 e 798±27, respectively. The analysis showed that there ir no statistical difference between the data, which indicates that the thickness of 1.5 cm is already configured as a limit for a randon exhalation. For the active sand samples of 1.4, 2.3, 2.9, 3.5 and 4.2 cm, the number of tracks was 380±18, 322±15, 298±5, 548±25 e 446±83, respectively. In a general analysis, it was concluded that there is no expressive increase of the exhalation with the increase of the thickness, só that the thickness of 1.4 cm is already configured as a limit for the exhalation of radon. In order to determine the concentration of radon exhaled by the samples made of common cement past and active sand, were analyzed samples in flasks where the secular equilibrium had already occured. The results showed that, for common cement past samples, the values do not represent and expressive growth. However, for the test samples with high radon activity and increase in the concentration with increasing the thickness was observed. To determine the contribution of the concentrations in an indoor environment, radon exhalation flux measurement was performed. These results were extrapolated to the standard room and varies from 15 to 60 Bq/m³. This contribution can be considered expressive, but not of concern, só the results were considered close to normality.

An ideal biomaterial for dental implants must have very high biocompatibility, which means that such materials should not provoke any serious adverse tissue response. Also, used metal alloys must have high fatigue resistance due the masticatory force and good corrosion resistance. These properties are rendered by using alpha and beta stabilizers, such as Al, V, Ni, Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn. Commercially pure titanium (TiCP) is used often for dental and orthopedic implants manufacturing. However, sometimes other alloys are employed and consequently it is essential to research the chemical elements present in those alloys that could bring prejudice for the health. Present work investigated TiCP metal alloys used for dental implant manufacturing and evaluated the presence of stabilizing elements within existing limits and standards for such materials. For alloy characterization and identification of stabilizing elements it was used EDXRF technique. This method allows to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of the materials using the spectra of the characteristic X-rays emitted by the elements present in the metal samples. The experimental setup was based on two X- rays tubes (AMPTEK Mini X model with Ag and Au targets), a X-123SDD detector (AMPTEK) and a 0.5mm Cu collimator, developed due to the sample characteristics. The other experimental setup used as a complementary technique is composed of an X-ray tube with a Mo target, collimator 0.65mm and XFlash (SDD) detector - ARTAX 200 (BRUKER). Other method for elemental characterization by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) applied in present work was based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) EVO® (Zeeis). This method also was used to evaluate the surface microstructure of the sample. The percentual of Ti obtained in the elementary characterization was among 93.35 ± 0.17% and 95.34 ± 0.19 %. These values are considered below the reference limit of 98.635% to 99.5% for TiCP, established by Association of metals centric materials engineers and scientists Society (ASM). The presence of elements Al and V in all samples also contributed to underpin the fact that are not TiCP implants. The values for Al vary between 6.3 ± 1.3% and 3.7 ± 2.0% and for V, between 0.26 ± 0.09% and 0.112 ± 0.048%. According to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), these elements should not be present in TiCP and in accordance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the presence of Al should be

This work presents the adaptation of the Geant4 code for converting DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) images of a skull, obtained in conventional tomography (CT), into a virtual anthropomorphic phantom. The work was based on the medical example named "Dicom Code" provided by the developers of the code Geant4. During the execution, restructurings using the "Dicom Code" example were made to achieve the direct conversion of tomographic images into a virtual phantom. All the steps referring to nuclear physical events were removed. The file DicomHandler.cc was reformulated in order to avoid the pixels compression of the CT image. The CT images of a physical polyethylene (PEAD) phantom with acrylic core and a real human skull were then converted into virtual phantoms for the code Geant4. The results showed that with this code, it may be possible the reconstruction of anatomical areas with complex geometries, based on the use of real tomographic images.

This study evaluates the distribution of the dose received by work-people involved in portable digital veterinary radiology procedures and checks the dose reduction obtained with the use of individual protection equipments. For this evaluation measurements were made using TLD-100 thermoluminescent dosimeters, positioned at seven different spots on the body of the assistants: hands, chest (outside the apron), thyroid (inside the apron), left and right eye corners and at the forehead, and in five different spots in the veterinarian: chest (outside the apron), thyroid (inside the apron), left and right eye corners and the center of the eyes. The dosage was evaluated through the 63 procedures performed with 49 assistants and a veterinarian in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, PR. The results show the importance of using thyroid protection and lead aprons to reduce the dosage received by the veterinarian and assistants. The dosages of the assistants who held the animals were higher in the areas of the hands. This study shows the need for additional protective measurements and the implementation of training mechanisms in radiation protection for physicians and assistants who work with portable digital radiology.

The animals that are subjected to ionizing radiation have a higher risk of effects such as induction of cancer, cataracts, fibrosis and shortening of life span. Few studies have been conducted comparing the new detection systems of portable digital x-rays and conventional radiographic images. The purpose of this study is to compare the detection systems regarding the entrance surface air Kerma rate in skin (ESAK). Routine radiographic examinations were performed on 43 animals in the conventional system and 43 in the digital system. Initially performed an evaluation of x-ray equipment and subsequently it was evaluated the ESAK through thermoluminescent dosimeters and the tube output. A subjective analysis of the image quality in chest radiography was made. The device was considered adequate after being subjected to quality tests. Radiography showed several types of incidences with ESAK values 40% higher than the digital system compared to conventional. Significant difference was observed in radiographs of the spine and thorax. In the thoracic examination ESAK difference between the systems is stable with increasing voltage in the device. With increasing milliamperage the difference between them increases. Thoracic radiographs evaluated according to subjective analysis of image quality obtained using the best quality digital system, but with a greater digital ESAK than for conventional systems.

Since the earliest works proposing the use of protons for imaging, the main advantage of protons over X-rays was expected to be a result of the specific property of the proton flux dropping off very steeply at the end of the particle range. This idea was declared but was not checked. In the present work, this assumption was investigated using the Monte Carlo simulation, with the help of SRIM-2008 software, for the case of a detector that registers only a small part of the proton exit energy (thin detector). First, a thickness of such detector was determined for the investigated water object of 20 cm. Then, it was studied the minimum dose absorbed by an object that is necessary to distinguish two water objects with the thicknesses of 20 cm and 20.1 cm as a function of the initial energy. The results were compared with the case of thick detector that registers the total exit energy. The carried out investigation shows that the principal idea of proton imaging to work near the end of the proton range is not correct in the case of thin detector as well as for thick one. In general, detector systems based on the measurement of the total exit energy are preferable to systems based on thin detectors.

This aim of this work is to measure the Entrance Surface Air Kerma, Ka,e, in Dental Computed Tomography, also known as CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). Data collection was conducted in six dental radiology clinics. Five of these have dental computed tomography scanner and one of them has a panoramic X ray scanner. The experimental essay is composed of a humanoid phantom filled with water. In addition, it has similar dimensions to a child that has head with lateral diameter of 14.5 cm. The Ka,e was measured with thermoluminescence dosimeters on the surface of the phantom. The locations of the dosimeters correspond to eyes and salivary gland (parotid glands). The technique used comprises the total area of the head, like a craniofacial examination. The configuration of extended FOV provides the highest Ka,e values. The technical parameters (kVp and mAs) and different modes of executing the FOV influenced the Ka,e results. Furthermore, there were differences between the results of three scanners of the same model. There is also a lack of symmetry on Ka,e distribution between both sides of the phantom. The CBCT with the lowest Ka,e on this work is of the same type of those with the lowest doses related on literature.

Humanoid phantoms, made of polyethylene and filled with water, were developed for the use in peripheral dosimetry in radiotherapy. Three of them represent infants of different sizes (2, 5 and 10 years) and three are adult size (female in early pregnancy, late pregnancy and one male). It were compared the peripheral doses from two adult male phantoms, the humanoid and an Alderson, submitted to a radiotherapy cranial beam. For 18 MV beams the doses in anthropomorphic were higher within the range of 2.5 to 27%, except for the dose in the heart, about 40% higher in anthropomorphic, due to the fact that in the humanoid region corresponding to lungs is filled with water. For 15 MV the difference decreased and for 6 MV there was an intertwining of the curves of the doses of both phantoms. In regions close to the beam the doses differed by up to 13%, which allows the humanoid phantom to be used to estimate doses in the regions where induction of cancer by radiation occurs more often. In more remote regions, the differences observed in the comparison of doses between the phantoms can be taken into account when the humanoid phantom is used. The humanoid phantom has the advantages of being lightweight and easy handling as well as its low cost. The uncertainties in dosimetry grow with increasing distance from the beam - in the thyroid was observed uncertainty of 0.7% and 5% in the testes. In peripheral pediatric dosimetry during the application of different clinical techniques for cranial treatments, the dose to the thyroid, compared to the dose delivered to the isocenter, was 0.2% for radiosurgery with cone or mMLC, 0.28% in IMRT sliding window, 1.4% in IMRT step and shoot, 2.9% for compensator-based IMRT and 0.23% in VMAT. It was observed that the positioning verification for cranial treatment added 0.13 cGy to the thyroid, for each pair of double-exposure portals. The fetal dosimetry in the treatment of breast cancer showed that different field settings and accessories produce quite different peripheral doses. The presence of wedge filter in the treatment of breast cancer increased by up to four times the fetal doses in the region and it is important to use a lead shield in the abdomen region, because with it the attenuation of radiation is significant and the embryo / fetus can be protected. It is recommended to use humanoid phantoms in the estimation of doses, in order to conduct clinical staff to choose the best treatment technique, create protective shields or even transfer the patient to a more suitable machine.
