A theoretical understanding of the experimental electronic transport phenomena in gas sensors based on DNA functionalized graphene is presented by quantitatively investigating the time-dependent electronic transport in these devices using the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism and tight-binding approximation. The time-dependent zeroth and first order contributions to the current are calculated with derivations of the equation of motion and Dyson equation. The zeroth order contribution is identified as the time-dependent Landauer formula in terms of the slow time variable and the first order contribution is found to be small in this experiment. The current is explicitly calculated by deriving a formula for the transmission function and considering a form for the hopping integral which includes the effect of chemical vapors on the charge distribution of the carbon atoms and the nearest-neighbor carbon-carbon distance $\rm a_{cc}$. Theoretical results are found in agreement with the experimental results. A shift in the Fermi level ($\rm \varepsilon_f$) is calculated, which is a result of shift in the Dirac point due to adsorption of vapors on the DNA functionalized graphene. The work suggests that using the same values of change in $\rm a_{cc}$ due to the four DNA bases for a specific target vapor, the theoretical values of the current response can be predicted for different DNA sequences leading to the application of the graphene sensors as a DNA analyser., Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures and 4 Tables

A non-linear Penner type interaction is introduced and studied in the random matrix model of homo-RNA. The asymptotics in length of the partition function is discussed for small and large $N$ (size of matrix). The interaction doubles the coupling ($v$) between the bases and the dependence of the combinatoric factor on ($v,N$) is found. For small $N$, the effect of interaction changes the power law exponents for the secondary and tertiary structures. The specific heat shows different analytical behavior in the two regions of $N$, with a peculiar double peak in its second derivative for N=1 at low temperature. We investigate the time-dependent electronic transport in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) functionalized with Au clusters on CO gas exposure. Using a tight-binding Hamiltonian and the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism the time-dependent zeroth and first order contributions to the current are calculated. The zeroth order contribution is identified as the time-dependent Landauer formula in terms of the slow time variable, whereas the first order contribution is found to be small. The Green's function for the SWCNT is derived using the equation of motion and Dyson equation technique. The conductance is explicitly evaluated by considering a form for the hopping integral which accounts for the effect of dopants on the charge distribution of the carbon atoms and the nearest-neighbor distance. The effect of dopants is also studied in terms of fluctuations by calculating the autocorrelation function for the experimental and theoretical data. These calculations allow direct comparison with the experiment and demonstrate how the presence of dopants modifies the conductance of the SWCNT measured experimentally and provide the only study of fluctuations in the sensor response in terms of the autocorrelation function., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

A linear external perturbation is introduced in the action of the partition function of the random matrix model of RNA [G. Vernizzi, H. Orland and A. Zee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 168103 (2005)]. It is seen that (i). the perturbation distinguishes between paired and unpaired bases in that there are structural changes, from unpaired and paired base structures ($0 \leq \alpha < 1$) to completely paired base structures ($\alpha=1$), as the perturbation parameter $\alpha$ approaches 1 ($\alpha$ is the ratio of interaction strengths of original and perturbed terms in the action of the partition function), (ii). the genus distributions exhibit small differences for small even and odd lengths $L$, (iii). the partition function of the linear interacting matrix model is related via a scaling formula to the re-scaled partition function of the random matrix model of RNA, (iv). the free energy and specific heat are plotted as functions of $L$, $\alpha$ and temperature $T$ and their first derivative with respect to $\alpha$ is plotted as a function of $\alpha$. The free energy shows a phase transition at $\alpha=1$ for odd (both small and large) lengths and for even lengths the transition at $\alpha=1$ gets sharper and sharper as more pseudoknots are included (that is for large lengths)., Comment: 20 pages, 22 figures, 1 table

We calculate the two-time current correlation function using the experimental data of the current-time characteristics of the Gas-DNA-decorated carbon nanotube field effect transistor. The pattern of the correlation function is a measure of the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensors and suggest that these gas flow sensors may also be used as DNA sequence detectors. The system is modelled by a one-dimensional tight-binding Hamiltonian and we present analytical calculations of quantum electronic transport for the system using the time-dependent nonequilibrium Green's function formalism and the adiabatic expansion. The zeroth and first order contributions to the current $I^{(0)}(\bar{t})$ and $I^{(1)}(\bar{t})$ are calculated, where $I^{(0)} (\bar{t})$ is the Landauer formula. We study a matrix model of RNA in which an external perturbation acts on n nucleotides of the polymer chain. The effect of the perturbation appears in the exponential generating function of the partition function as a factor $(1-\frac{n\alpha}{L})$ [where $\alpha$ is the ratio of strengths of the original to the perturbed term and L is length of the chain]. The asymptotic behaviour of the genus distribution functions for the extended matrix model are analyzed numerically when (i) $n=L$ and (ii) $n=1$. In these matrix models of RNA, as $n\alpha/L$ is increased from 0 to 1, it is found that the universality of the number of diagrams $a_{L, g}$ at a fixed length L and genus g changes from $3^{L}$ to $(3-\frac{n\alpha}{L})^{L}$ ($2^{L}$ when $n\alpha/L=1$) and the asymptotic expression of the total number of diagrams $\cal N$ at a fixed length L but independent of genus g, changes in the factor $\exp^{\sqrt{L}}$ to $\exp^{(1-\frac{n\alpha}{L})\sqrt{L}}$ ($exp^{0}=1$ when $n\alpha/L=1$), Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We construct and study an extended random matrix model of RNA (polymer) folding. A perturbation which acts on all the nucleotides in the chain is added to the action of the RNA partition function. The effect of this perturbation on the partition function and the Genus Distributions is studied. This perturbation distinguishes between the paired and unpaired bases. For example, for $\alpha = 1$ (where $\alpha$ is the ratio of the strengths of the original and perturbed term in the action) the partition function and genus distribution for odd lengths vanish completely. This partition function and the genus distribution is non-zero for even lengths where structures with fully paired bases only remain. This implies that (i). the genus distributions are different and (ii). there is a ``structural transition'' (from an ``unpaired-paired base phase'' to a ``completely paired base phase'') as $\alpha$ approaches 1 in the extended matrix models. The current characteristics of DNA decorated carbon nanotubes for different gas odors are studied. A simple model of charge transfer between the Gas-DNA-base complex and single wall carbon nanotube (SWCN) is proposed to explain the current response for different odors. The autocorrelation and two-point correlation functions are calculated for the current sensitivity curves. These correlation functions together with the current characteristics form finger-prints for detection of the odor and DNA sequence., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

We examine volatility of an Indian stock market in terms of aspects like participation, synchronization of stocks and quantification of volatility using the random matrix approach. Volatility pattern of the market is found using the BSE index for the three-year period 2000-2002. Random matrix analysis is carried out using daily returns of 70 stocks for several time windows of 85 days in 2001 to (i) do a brief comparative analysis with statistics of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrix C of correlations between price fluctuations, in time regimes of different volatilities. While a bulk of eigenvalues falls within RMT bounds in all the time periods, we see that the largest (deviating) eigenvalue correlates well with the volatility of the index, the corresponding eigenvector clearly shows a shift in the distribution of its components from volatile to less volatile periods and verifies the qualitative association between participation and volatility (ii) observe that the Inverse participation ratio for the 'last' eigenvector is sensitive to market fluctuations (the two quantities are observed to anti correlate significantly) (iii) set up a variability index, V whose temporal evolution is found to be significantly correlated with the volatility of the overall market index., Comment: 33 Pages, 19 Figures

This is a first step in counting the number of multiple solutions in certain glassy random matrix models introduced in refs. \cite{d02}. We are able to do this by reducing the problem of counting the multiple solutions to that of a moment problem. More precisely we count the number of different moments when we introduce an asymmetry (tapping) in the random matrix model and then take it to vanish. It is shown here that the number of moments grows exponentially with respect to N the size of the matrix. As these models map onto models of structural glasses in the high temperature phase (liquid) this may have interesting implications for the supercooled liquid phase in these spin glass models. Further it is shown that the nature of the asymmetry (tapping) is crutial in finding the multiple solutions. The Chiral Random Matrix Model or the Gaussian Penner Model (generalized Laguerre ensemble) is re-examined in the light of the results which have been found in double well matrix models [D97,BD99] and subtleties discovered in the single well matrix models [BH99]. The orthogonal polynomial method is used to extend the universality to include non-polynomial potentials. The new asymptotic ansatz is derived (different from Szego's result) using saddle point techniques. The density-density correlators are the same as that found for the double well models ref. [BD99] (there the results have been derived for arbitrary potentials). In the smoothed large N limit they are sensitive to odd and even N where N is the size of the matrix [BD99]. This is a more realistic random matrix model of mesoscopic systems with density of eigenvalues with gaps. The eigenvalues see a brick-wall potential at the origin. This would correspond to sharp edges in a real mesoscopic system or a reflecting boundary. Hence the results for the two-point density-density correlation function may be useful in finding one eigenvalue effects in experiments in mesoscopic systems or small metallic grains. This paper summarizes some work I've been doing on eigenvalue correlators of Random Matrix Models which show some interesting behaviour. First we consider matrix models with gaps in there spectrum or density of eigenvalues. The density-density correlators of these models depend on whether N, where N is the size of the matrix, takes even or odd values. The fact that this dependence persists in the large N thermodynamic limit is an unusual property and may have consequences in the study of one electron effects in mesoscopic systems. Secondly, we study the parametric and cross correlators of the Harish Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber matrix model. The analytic expressions determine how the correlators change as a parameter (e.g. the strength of a perturbation in the hamiltonian of the chaotic system or external magnetic field on a sample of material) is varied. This paper discusses Random Matrix Models which exhibit the unusual phenomena of having multiple solutions at the same point in phase space. These matrix models have gaps in their spectrum or density of eigenvalues. The free energy and certain correlation functions of these models show differences for the different solutions. Here I present evidence for the presence of multiple solutions both analytically and numerically. As an example I discuss the double well matrix model with potential $V(M)= -{\mu \over 2}M^2+{g \over 4}M^4$ where $M$ is a random $N\times N$ matrix (the $M^4$ matrix model) as well as the Gaussian Penner model with $V(M)={\mu\over 2}M^2-t \ln M$. First I study what these multiple solutions are in the large $N$ limit using the recurrence coefficient of the orthogonal polynomials. Second I discuss these solutions at the non-perturbative level to bring out some differences between the multiple solutions. I also present the two-point density-density correlation functions which further characterizes these models in a new university class. Some puzzles which arise in matrix models with multiple cuts are presented. They are present in the smoothed eigenvalue correlators of these models. First a method is described to calculate smoothed eigenvalue correlators in random matrix models with eigenvalues distributed in a single-cut, previous known results are reproduced. The method is extended to symmetric two-cut random matrix models. The correlators are written in a form suitable for application to mesoscopic systems. Connections are made with the smooth correlators derived using the Orthogonal Polynomial (OP) method. A few interesting observations are made regarding even and odd density-density correlators and cross-over correlators in $Z_2$ symmetric random matrix models., Comment: 20 pages Latex, three postscript figures
