Elections have generally been recognized as the most democratic means of establishing governments. However, whereas Ghana has seen a remarkable increase in the occurrence of elections in the post-third wave period, this democratic gain has been battered by a corresponding proliferation in the incidence of electoral-related violence in certain parts of the country before, during and after elections. This study intends to contribute to the existing literature on the intersection between democracy, electoral violence and human security in Ghana and Africa at large by exploring the effect of such violence on human security in the Odododioidio constituency in the Greater Region of Ghana. Drawing mainly on qualitative data generated through group discussions and in-depth interviews, the study revealed seven key human security concerns that are undermined by electoral violence in the study location. The paper proposes interventions that could contribute significantly to avert the situation.

Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) strategies, often applied in tree crops, require precise monitoring methods of water stress. Crop water stress index (CWSI), based on canopy temperature measurements, has shown to be a good indicator of water deficits in field crops but has seldom been used in trees. CWSI was measured on a continuous basis in a Central California mature pistachio orchard, under full and deficit irrigation. Two treatments—control, returning the full evapotranspiration (ETc) and RDI—irrigated with 40% ETc during stage 2 of fruit grow (shell hardening). During stage 2, the canopy temperature—measured continuously with infrared thermometers (IRT)—of the RDI treatment was consistently higher than the control during the hours of active transpiration; the difference decreasing after irrigation. The non-water-stressed baseline (NWSB), obtained from clear-sky days canopy–air temperature differential and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) in the control treatment, showed a marked diurnal variation in the intercept, mainly explained by the variation in solar radiation. In contrast, the NWSB slope remained practically constant along the day. Diurnal evolution of calculated CWSI was stable and near zero in the control, but showed a clear rising diurnal trend in the RDI treatment, increasing as water stress increased around midday. The seasonal evolution of the CWSI detected large treatment differences throughout the RDI stress period. While the CWSI in the well-irrigated treatment rarely exceeded 0.2 throughout the season, RDI reached values of 0.8–0.9 near the end of the stress period. The CWSI responded to irrigation events along the whole season, and clearly detected mild water stress, suggesting extreme sensitivity to variations in tree water status. It correlated well with midday leaf water potential (LWP), but was more sensitive than LWP at mild stress levels. We conclude that the CWSI, obtained from continuous nadir-view measurements with IRTs, is a good and

This report presents information that describes the physical properties of the shallow subsurface deposits along a 12-mile reach of Rillito Creek. Data used in this study include well logs from 63 existing wells, information gathered from the drilling and coring of 5 new boreholes within the creek channel, and the results of borehole and surface geophysical surveys. Data collected for this study delineate the recent alluvium and underlying sediments to depths of about 150 ft within about 1 mile of the creek and describe the vertical and lateral distribution of flow-related properties within these deposits.

The bay was sub­divided into three sectors, North Bay, Central Bay, and South Bay, with the Central Bay serving as a proxy for the “oceanic end-member.” Separate budgets were con­structed for the wet (October to March) and dry (April to October) seasons of each year for six years (1990-1995). This period of record contained two years of above normal runoff (1993 and 1995) and four years of below average runoff. Sewage accounts for approximately 50% of the nutrient loading to the bay in winter and 80% of the summer loading. We conclude that overall the bay is slightly net autotrophic (production of new organic matter in the bay by plant growth exceeds respiratory demands); however, this varies seasonally (strongest in summer) and is complicated by abiotic P absorption in the North Bay. Both arms of the bay were apparently net heterotrophic during the winter, with this signal being strongest dur­ing the wet winters of 1993 and 1995. We found the San Francisco Bay nutrient data set to be surprisingly sparse for the sort of biogeochemical mass balance analyses we performed. It would be highly desirable for future mass

In 1968, Peabody Coal Company began strip-mining operations on land leased from the Navajo and Hopi Tribes on Black Mesa (fig. 1). Of the 11 to 13 million tons of coal that are extracted each year, an average of about 5 million tons are transported as slurry by a 273-mile-long pipeline from the coal-lease area west to the Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, Nevada. Transporting the coal in slurry form consumes, on average, about 3,800 acre-ft of water annually. The slurry water is provided through a network of 8 wells that tap the confined parts of the D and N aquifers underlying Black Mesa. Most of the slurry water is pumped from the confined part of the N aquifer which also is the primary source of water for municipal users within the 5,400-square-mile Black Mesa area. The Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe became concerned about the long term effects of industrial withdrawals from the N aquifer on the availability and quality of water supplies for domestic and municipal purposes. These concerns led to an ongoing investigation of the water resources of the Black Mesa area begun in 1971 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).

The Arizona Geological Survey and the Utah Geological Survey have begun a cooperative research effort to evaluate seismic hazard in southwestern Utah and northwestern Arizona. We have conducted studies that allow us to begin to understand the potential for large, damaging earthquakes on the long, active Hurricane fault zone that cuts through this region. These investigations will significantly improve our understanding of seismic hazard in this rapidlygrowing region at a time when this information can be incorporated into design standards and building practices

A new application of geophysical technology is enabling U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists to measure changes in the amount of water in an aquifer using a network of microgravity stations. This technique enables a direct measurement of ground-water depletion and recharge. In Tucson, Arizona, residents have relied solely upon ground water for most of their needs since the 19th century. Water levels in some wells in the Tucson area have declined more than 200 ft in the past 50 years. Similar drops in water levels have occurred elsewhere in Arizona. In response to the overdrafting of ground water, the State of Arizona passed legislation designed to attain "safe yield," which is defined as a balance between ground-water withdrawals and annual recharge of aquifers. To monitor progress in complying with the legislation, ground-water withdrawals are measured and estimated, and annual recharge is estimated.

Three surveys measuring temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, copper, cadmium, zinc, chromium, coliform bacteria, E. coli bacteria and radioactivity (gross beta) were conducted in 1970 during the months of April ( 30), September (22), and November (25). This report presents the data collected during this period.

In 1969, surveys at Morgantown on the Potomac River were conducted in March, August, and November. Vertical measurements were made of temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen. This is a public hearing before the Department of Water Resources on the Application of the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company for a permit to appropriate and use a maximum of 3.6 billion gallons per day and an average of 3.5 billion gallons per day of water during twelve months of the year from the Chesapeake Bay at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in the vicinity of Lusby, Maryland, to be used for cooling purposes, and also on an Application by the Company for a waterway construction permit to dredge intake and discharge channels, to construct an intake baffle wall, an offshore discharge conduit, and appurtenant structures offshore from the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant.
