Background: The interconnected effects of maternal perinatal depression and the early mother-infant relational quality on children's executive function development are crucial yet understudied. This study addresses this gap, focusing on how perinatal depressive symptoms and emotional availability at 6 months predict child executive function performance at age four, with an emphasis on the moderating role of emotional availability., Method: This study included 282 mother-infant pairs recruited from the Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Wellbeing Study, utilising repeated Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale measurement over the perinatal period, Emotional Availability Scales, and child executive function assessments (Shape School, NEPSY-II, Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity scale, inattentive subscale). Latent growth curve analysis incorporated controls for socioeconomic status and maternal cognitive abilities, and moderation effects were examined through multiplicative interaction terms., Results: We found that emotional availability influences children's executive function, specifically switching, motor inhibition, and inattentive symptoms, irrespective of maternal depressive symptom changes. Purpose: Depressive symptoms during the perinatal period have broad and enduring health implications for birthing parents and their offspring. Rising prevalence rates of perinatal depression highlight the need for research examining factors influencing depressive symptoms during pregnancy, and trajectories during the early postnatal period. Grounded in bioecological systems theory, this longitudinal multimethod study examined whether prenatal bioecological factors predict depressive symptoms from pregnancy to 36 months postpartum., Methods: Participants were 162 pregnant individuals, oversampled for high emotion dysregulation, who completed a life stress interview and physiological assessment during the 3rd trimester and a self-report measure of depression at five time-points (3rd trimester, within 48 h of birth, 7, 18, and 36 months postpartum). Multilevel models were used to test study aims., Results: Participants exhibited the highest levels of depressive symptoms at 3rd trimester, and substantial variability in depressive symptom trajectories over time. Lower resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), an index of parasympathetic nervous system functioning, in the 3rd trimester was associated with higher concurrent depressive symptoms. Higher levels of stress related to partner relationships, finances, and health were concurrently associated with more depressive symptoms during pregnancy and decreases in depressive symptoms over time. Purpose: To determine the psychological experiences of patients with postpartum depression by systematically reviewing, retrieving, and synthesizing data from qualitative studies., Methods: Nine databases were systematically searched for relevant publications, from database establishment to September 20, 2024. All qualitative studies in English and Chinese that explored the real-life experiences, feelings, etc., of individuals affected by postpartum depression after childbirth were included. The qualitative meta-synthesis was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations. Two independent reviewers selected these studies and evaluated the quality of each study, conducting a meta-analysis to integrate the results., Results: A total of 28 studies revealed 12 sub-themes and 3 descriptive themes: negative physical and psychological experiences and coping strategies, role transition discomfort and impact, lack of relevant support., Conclusion: The prominence of negative physical and psychological experiences, the discomfort of role transformation, and the lack of relevant support in patients with postpartum depression. In future studies, more attention should be paid to maternal mental health, and full mental health screening during pregnancy and childbirth should be implemented. Objectives: This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of a blended cognitive behavioural intervention-combination of a web-based program and sessions with a psychologist (intervention group)-compared to a guided web-based intervention (active control group) for the treatment of postpartum depression., Methods: Adult Portuguese women in the postpartum period (up to 12 months) presenting clinically relevant depressive symptoms were considered eligible. Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention group (n = 17) or the control group (n = 17) and completed self-report questionnaires at baseline, post-intervention and at 3-month follow-up., Results: In both arms, dropout rates were low, and participants considered the treatment acceptable and useful. Mixed ANOVAs revealed a significant reduction in depressive symptoms and improvements in secondary outcomes (anxiety, negative thoughts, emotion regulation, self-compassion and psychological flexibility) from baseline to post-intervention in both groups. No time × group interactions were found. A significant clinical change in depressive symptoms was observed in more than 80% of the participants in both groups. Background: Group psychotherapy, an effective treatment for common postpartum mental disorders (e.g. depression, anxiety), has increasingly been delivered virtually since the pandemic. This study aims to understand experiential aspects of participating in videoconferencing-based group psychotherapy in the postpartum period., Methods: Our urban academic ambulatory hospital has delivered group psychotherapy for women (cis and trans) and non-binary individuals of female sex with postpartum depressive and anxiety symptomatology via videoconferencing since 2020. One therapist-facilitator conducts weekly 60-min group therapy sessions with 5-6 participants for eight weeks. Group participants were invited to complete a semi-structured qualitative interview on their experience. Using an interpretive description approach, we conducted reflexive thematic analysis to code anonymized transcripts and construct themes. Facilitator interviews were used for triangulation and additional context., Results: Of 134 patients in video psychotherapy groups over 11 months, 14 completed an interview, as did all group facilitators (n = 3). Overall, participants felt the experience with videoconferencing group therapy was beneficial for their mental health. Three themes were constructed: (1) "Moving Towards a New Normal": The group helped participants normalize feelings and experiences around transition to parenthood, and accessing health care virtually was now considered to be normal practice, although some wanted an element of choice. (2) "Virtual Connection, Real Community": Connections were made virtually, yet participants felt a real sense of community. Facilitators played an important role fostering an environment in which participants could create lasting bonds. Participants noted challenges with feeling comfortable virtually and provided pragmatic and structural suggestions for enhancing the creation of community. (3) "Trade-offs to Virtual Engagement": Participants made positive and negative trade-offs (e.g. no informal interactions, travel, isolation at home, childcare challenges) to maximize their experience and were able to be more authentic in their self-presentation to the group., Conclusions: People with postpartum depression and anxiety who participated in videoconferencing-based group psychotherapy appreciated the sense of community within their groups to normalize their experience transitioning to parenthood. Participants had to make trade-offs to access virtual groups, but felt the experience was worthwhile and helped improve their mental health. Introduction: The United States is the only high-income country without a comprehensive national maternity leave policy guaranteeing paid, job-projected leave. The current study examined associations between maternity leave characteristics (duration of leave, payment status of leave) and postpartum depressive symptoms., Methods: This study used a sample of 3,515 postpartum women from the New York City and New York State Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) from 2016 to 2019. We used logistic regression to examine the association of leave duration and payment status with self-reported postpartum depressive symptoms between 2 and 6 months postpartum., Results: Compared to having at least some paid leave, having unpaid leave was associated with an increased odds of postpartum depressive symptoms, adjusting for leave duration and selected covariates (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04-1.93). There was no significant difference in postpartum depressive symptoms between those with partially and those with fully paid leave. In contrast to prior literature, leave duration was not significantly associated with postpartum depressive symptoms (aOR = 0.99, 95% CI: 0.97-1.02 for each additional week of leave)., Discussion: This study suggests that unpaid leave is associated with increased risk of postpartum depression, which can have long-term health effects for both mothers and children. Background: Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and social isolation are prevalent and associated with adverse maternal and child health outcomes. We conducted a systematic review to assess the evidence for nature-based interventions (NBIs) to address depression, anxiety, and loneliness among pregnant and postpartum women., Methods: Studies were identified through MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, APA PsycINFO, ClinicalTrials.org, Web of Science, and Cochrane Reviews in February 2023. Included studies were original, peer-reviewed studies published in or translated into English that evaluated an intervention which engaged pregnant or postpartum women directly with nature and used a quantitative outcome measure for anxiety, depression, or loneliness., Results: Three studies, including 68 pregnant or postpartum women and their family or friends, met our inclusion criteria. Results were synthesized narratively in text and tables. All studies had early-stage designs and relatively small sample sizes. A variety of intervention content and delivery platforms were utilized. Studies were not adequately powered to test or detect statistically significant changes in depression, anxiety, or loneliness. Measurement of nature engagement varied. Using the Downs and Black checklist, we found study quality varied from good to poor., Discussion: More research is needed to understand the potential benefits of NBIs for perinatal mental health and social wellbeing. Additional study rigor is needed, including the consistent use of validated and well-rationalized measures of nature engagement. Purpose: Postpartum depression (PPD) affects one in eight women in the United States. Women with HIV may be at higher risk for PPD. This systematic review examined factors related to PPD in those with HIV., Method: Using three databases, articles published between 2017 and 2022 were screened for eligibility, with 19 full texts reviewed and critically appraised. Ten studies from eight countries were ultimately included in the analysis., Results: Using Engel's biopsychosocial model, common themes emerged within the theoretical framework: (a) biological (e.g., HIV diagnosis in pregnancy, impact on HIV adherence); (b) psychological (e.g., pregnancy intention, intimate partner violence, fear of HIV transmission, infant illness, behavior); and (c) social (e.g., socioeconomic status, lack of social support, disclosure, stigma)., Conclusion: Living with HIV carries additional stressors for new parents that may impact mental health in the postpartum period. Nurses are in a unique position to screen for PPD early using established screening tools while paying particular attention to associated factors impacting those with HIV. Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) significantly impacts mothers and children's health. China aims to incorporate PPD screening in postpartum home visits, but research on implementation barriers and facilitators is scarce. We designed and implemented a new PPD screening program in Changsha, China, requiring maternal health workers to integrate PPD screening into their postpartum home visits., Aims: To identify real-world barriers and facilitators associated with integrating PPD screening into routine home visits from the perspective of maternal health workers., Methods: We employed a mixed-methods approach. Maternal health workers involved in the newly introduced PPD screening program were included. Guided by Normalization Process Theory (NPT), quantitative data were collected using the NoMAD instrument, and qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics for the survey and thematic analysis for the interviews., Results: All 42 maternal health workers involved in the new PPD program completed the quantitative survey, and nine participated in qualitative interviews. The NoMAD survey revealed high scores for Coherence and Cognitive Participation, but lower scores for Collective Action, particularly regarding insufficient skills and resource adequacy. Thematic analysis identified several barriers, including workload concerns, the need for enhanced psychological healthcare capacity, and lack of economic incentives. Background and Objectives: Suicidal ideation (SI) during the postpartum phase is linked with suicide, a leading cause of death during this period. Antenatal depression and anxiety symptoms have both been linked with increased risk for postpartum SI. However, research aimed at examining the relative contributions of antenatal anxiety and depression symptoms towards postpartum SI remains nascent. In this study, we investigated the relative contribution of antenatal anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, and SI towards postpartum SI., Design: These data are from a longitudinal study in which American mothers were assessed during pregnancy and again at six- to eight weeks postpartum., Methods: Data were analyzed using correlations and logistic regression models., Results: Antenatal anxiety symptoms and antenatal depression symptoms were significantly correlated with postpartum SI. Results from a logistic regression model indicated that antenatal anxiety symptoms (T1; OR  = 1.185 [1.125, 1.245], p  = .004), but not antenatal depression symptoms (T1; OR  = 1.018 [0.943, 1.093], p  = .812) or antenatal SI (T1; OR  = 1.58 [0.11, 22.29], p  = 0.73), were significantly associated with postpartum SI., Conclusions: Antenatal anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, and SI were positively associated with postpartum SI. When examined simultaneously, anxiety symptoms during the antenatal phase (but not depression symptoms or SI) predicted SI in the postpartum phase.

Objective: China has a serious burden of Postpartum depression (PPD). In order to improve the current situation of high burden of PPD, this study explores the factors affecting PPD from the multidimensional perspectives with physiology, family support and social support covering the full-time chain of pre-pregnancy-pregnancy-postpartum., Methods: A follow-up survey was conducted in the Qujing First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province from 2020 to 2022, and a total of 4838 pregnant women who underwent antenatal checkups in the hospital were enrolled as study subjects. Mothers were assessed for PPD using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and logistic regression was used to analyse the level of mothers' postnatal depression and identify vulnerability characteristics., Results: The prevalence of mothers' PPD was 46.05%, with a higher prevalence among those who had poor pre-pregnancy health, had sleep problems during pregnancy, and only had a single female fetus. In the family support dimension, only family care (OR = 0.52, 95% CI 0.42-0.64) and only other people care(OR = 0.78, 95% CI 0.64-0.96) were the protective factors of PPD. The experience risk of PPD was higher among mothers who did not work or use internet., Conclusion: The PPD level in Yunnan Province was significantly higher than the global and Chinese average levels. Factors affecting mothers' PPD exist in all time stages throughout pregnancy, and the influence of family support and social support on PPD shouldn't be ignored. The prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) exceeds 20% in China. In this article, we unpack the coping strategies and involuntary responses to PPD among Chinese women and how such patterns are shaped by family communication dynamics and reflect distinct social, structural, and cultural contexts. Drawing upon the communication accommodation theory and the generic stress and coping model, we analyzed 661 posts collected under the hashtag #PPD ( chanhou yiyuzheng ) on Zhihu using the phronetic iterative approach. The analysis reveals that women self-identifying as having PPD often find themselves situated within a family environment marked by non-adaptive communication, culminating in insufficient support from their social circles. Furthermore, a significant number of these women lack effective coping mechanisms to manage PPD. Instead, they tend to stifle their expressions and needs through automatic responses, dedicating themselves to constant self-monitoring without practicing self-care. Our findings contribute to informed policymaking for postpartum support, addressing nuanced challenges encountered by new mothers in China.

Aim: To describe the current state of the literature on nurses' and midwives' knowledge, perceptions and experiences of managing parental postnatal depression (PPND)., Design: The Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review method and the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews guided the work., Data Sources: A systematic search of PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Scopus databases was conducted in January and February 2023., Review Methods: Peer-reviewed primary research articles published in English between 2012 and 2023 that involved nurses or midwives managing PPND were included. Rayyan was used to screen titles, abstracts and full-text articles. A spreadsheet was used to organize extracted data and synthesize results., Results: Twenty-nine articles met the inclusion criteria. Most study samples were of mothers, and few were from middle- and lower-income countries. Nurses and midwives lacked knowledge about PPND, yet they felt responsible for its management. Nurses and midwives faced significant organizational and systems-level challenges in managing PPND. However, nurses and midwives facilitated PPND care in collaboration with other healthcare providers., Conclusion: The review highlights significant gaps in the nurses' and midwives' care of PPND. Educational programmes are necessary to increase nurse and midwife knowledge of PPND and strategies for its management, including facilitating collaboration across the healthcare system and eliminating organizational and systemic-related barriers. Additional focused research is needed on nurses' and midwives' knowledge, perception of and experience with PPND beyond mothers, such as with fathers, sexually and gender-minoritized parents and surrogate mothers. Finally, additional research is needed in middle- and lower-income countries where nurses and midwives may face a higher burden of and unique cultural considerations in managing PPND., Impact: PPND can affect the parent's mental and physical health and relationship with their child. Aims/Background Perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms are significant predictors of increased postpartum anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. These symptoms have persistent adverse effects on both mothers and children. Currently, there are few reports in the literature on obsessive-compulsive disorder in elderly parturient women in China. This study primarily discusses the clinical characteristics of perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms in elderly parturient women and analyzes their influencing factors, aiming to provide references for clinical prevention and treatment. Methods This research employed a cross-sectional design, utilizing a convenience sampling method to select elderly parturients who delivered at Panjin Central Hospital from September 2022 to August 2023. The assessment instruments included a general data questionnaire, the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), the edinburgh postpartum depression scale (EPDS), and the sense of coherence scale (SOC-13). The relationship between the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and negative emotions and psychological burden was examined through Pearson correlation analysis. Additionally, the influencing factors of perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. Results In this study, a total of 124 questionnaires were distributed, and 122 valid questionnaires were recovered, yielding an effective recovery rate of 98.39%. Among the 122 elderly parturients, 37 were positive for perinatal obsessive-compulsive disorder, accounting for 30.33% (37/122). Among the 37 elderly parturients with perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms, 64.86% had both obsessive-compulsive thoughts and behaviors, 21.62% had obsessive-compulsive thoughts as the main symptom (8/37), and 13.51% had obsessive-compulsive behaviors (5/37). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that pregnancy history, pregnancy complications, fetal health, SOC-13 score, SAS score, and EPDS score were independent risk factors for positive perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms ( p < 0.05). Conclusion The incidence of perinatal obsessive-compulsive symptoms in elderly parturient women is high. Obsessive-compulsive thoughts primarily involve fears of injury and contamination, while obsessive-compulsive behaviors mainly consist of compulsive checking and cleaning. The occurrence of perinatal obsessive-compulsive disorder is associated with factors such as pregnancy and childbirth history, pregnancy complications, fetal health, negative emotions, and stress resistance.

Background: Paternal postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant yet often neglected mental health issue affecting fathers during the postpartum period. While maternal postpartum depression is extensively studied, the psychological challenges faced by new fathers, particularly in resource-limited settings like Ethiopia, receive considerably less attention. Paternal postpartum depression not only impacts fathers' well-being but also affects the health and development of their children and their relationships with partners. Understanding the prevalence of paternal postpartum depression and its underlying causes in Ethiopia is essential for developing effective healthcare policies and tailored support programs for new fathers. The goal of this meta-analysis and systematic review is to compile the information currently available regarding the prevalence of and contributing factors to postpartum depression in Ethiopian fathers., Methods: This study adhered to the PRISMA guidelines and focused on research from Ethiopia. A comprehensive search was performed across multiple databases, including Google, Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and Medline. Data were systematically collected using a structured checklist and analyzed with STATA version 11. To assess heterogeneity, the Cochrane Q test and I² statistic were applied. Publication bias was also checked using Egger's regression analysis, a funnel plot, and Begg's test., Results: Five studies with a total of 2,055 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of paternal postpartum depression in Ethiopia was 20.86% (95% CI: 16.43-25.29). Significant factors associated with paternal postpartum depression included low family income (OR = 3.04, 95% CI: 1.46-6.32), substance use (OR = 2.96, 95% CI: 1.63-5.37), poor social support (OR = 4.28, 95% CI: 2.53-7.23), unplanned pregnancy (OR = 3.42, 95% CI: 2.24-5.24), and infant sleep problems (OR = 4.78, 95% CI: 2.35-9.73). Heterogeneity was high (I² = 97.9%, P < 0.05). A subgroup analysis was conducted to better understand the variations among the primary studies., Conclusion: The study reveals a significant prevalence of paternal postpartum depression in Ethiopia, highlighting key risk factors such as low family income, substance use, poor social support, unplanned pregnancies, and infant sleep difficulties. These findings emphasize the need for routine depression screening for fathers, improved social support programs, education on infant sleep management, and further research to develop targeted prevention and treatment strategies., (© 2024. Background: Pregnancy and childbirth are critical life events which lead to significant changes in family structures and roles, thus having a substantial impact on partner relationship and maternal wellbeing. A dysfunctional partnership during this critical time of life has been associated with maternal depressiveness. However, sub-components of partnership quality and the causal relation with maternal symptoms of depression in the perinatal period have been sparsely studied so far. The current study aims to longitudinally assess the course of relationship quality and its sub-components from pregnancy to postpartum and to test a potential causal association with maternal symptoms of depression in the perinatal period., Methods: Differing from previous studies, partnership quality and symptoms of depression have been assessed prospectively and longitudinally from an early stage of pregnancy (second trimester) until six months postpartum. Cross-lagged panel models were applied to investigate a potential causal relationship between partnership quality and maternal depressive symptoms., Results: Relationship quality decreased significantly during the transition to parenthood (p < .05) with the steepest decline referring to tenderness (p < .001). We also found a substantial association of relationship quality and maternal depressiveness, but no indication for a clear causal direction of this association., Conclusions: Our results suggest that relationship quality and maternal depressiveness are substantially related in the perinatal period, thus pointing to the need of early prevention and intervention programs for peripartum women and their partners to prevent adverse outcome for the couple and the family., (© 2024. Background: Becoming a mother is a very important process because of the impact it can have on women and their families. Currently, there is no validated questionnaire that evaluates the process of becoming a mother in the Spanish population. Moreover, no consistent results have been obtained to identify significant differences between primiparous and multiparous mothers., Aim: (1) Linguistic and metric validation of the Being a Mother scale (BaM-13) in the Spanish population, (2) analysis of possible differences between primiparous and multiparous mothers' experience of motherhood., Methods: Instrumental design. In 2016-2017, a sample of 579 mothers with children between 6 and 11 months of age completed the Spanish version of BaM-13. The instrument was translated using forward and back translation. Construct validity, internal consistency, and criterion validity were empirically analyzed., Results: Factorial analyses showed that the scale presented two adequate factors. Internal consistency of the global scale ( α  = 0.818, ω  = 0.861), the Postnatal bonding factor ( α  = 0.773, ω  = 0.784), and the Adult's experience factor ( α  = 0.710, ω  = 0.721) was adequate. Significant associations were found with postpartum depression ( r  = 0.560), parental competence ( r  =  - 0.584) and postnatal bonding ( r  =  - 0.327). In terms of parity, primiparous mothers have greater difficulty in postnatal bonding, compared to multiparous mothers ( p  = 0.006)., Conclusions: The Spanish version of the BaM-13 scale is valid for measuring mothers' experience of motherhood in a wide range of domains. The findings of the study show the importance of considering parity in the experience of becoming a mother, highlighting the approach to postnatal bonding in primiparous mothers. Objective: Generalized Anxiety Disorder is an international mental health problem. Prevalence for anxiety disorders reported in perinatal period is high and related with adverse parental and child outcomes. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties and factorial validity of General Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaire (GAD-7) in the context of postpartum mothers., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 278 mothers (mean age 31.09; SD = 4.42) were recruited at the Neonatology, Gynecology, and Obstetrics Ward. Generalized Anxiety Disorder was assessed with GAD-7, stress with Parental Stress Scale (PSS), while risk of depression with Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to verify factor structure of GAD-7 and the internal consistency was evaluated using reliability coefficients: Cronbach's Alpha and McDonald's Omega., Results: The internal consistency of the GAD-7 was high (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.90 and MacDonald's Omega = 0.91). GAD-7 had significant correlations with the variables examined for construct validity, stress (PSS; r = 0.35, p < 0.01) and risk of depression (EPDS; r = 0.76, p < 0.01). No increased risk of postpartum major depression (PPMD) was reported in women conceiving through assisted reproductive technologies (ART). However, ART may be associated with a higher risk of parenting difficulties in women with PPMD. In 359 women with a PPMD admitted to a Mother-Baby Unit (MBU), ART-women (4.2%) showed a 5-fold higher rate of parenting difficulties than those with spontaneous pregnancy (73.33% vs. 35.17%, multivariate ORa = 5.09 [1.48-17.48] p = 0.01). Although numerous factors have been found to influence postpartum depression (PPD), no previous meta-analysis have systematically explored whether it is affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This study aimed to explore the influence of ACEs and their subtypes on PPD. A systematic literature search was conducted using Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Wan Fang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Chinese Biomedical Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and literature was screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodological quality assessment and data extraction were performed on the included studies. A random-effects model was used to pool the effects. In total, 24 studies were included, and 73 independent effects were extracted from them. The meta-analysis revealed that ACE was a risk factor for PPD (odds ratio [OR] = 2.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] [2.04, 2.63]). The subgroup analysis results showed that emotional abuse was the ACE subtype most strongly related to the occurrence of PPD (OR = 2.95, 95% CI [2.08, 4.20]), followed by emotional neglect (OR = 2.87, 95% CI [1.89, 4.36]) and sexual abuse (OR = 2.81, 95% CI [1.93, 4.09]). In addition, family member incarceration (OR = 2.62, 95% CI [1.51, 4.54]), physical abuse (OR = 2.31, 95% CI [1.67, 3.19]), and physical neglect (OR = 2.15, 95% CI [1.36, 3.39]) also have strong effects on PPD. ACE is a risk factor for PPD. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the trajectory of women's depressive symptoms during the first six months postpartum, identify risk factors (sociodemographic, obstetric and personality) associated with classes, and examine associations between classes and postpartum PTSD at two months and bonding at six months., Methods: The final sample included 212 women who gave birth in the maternity wards of a large tertiary health center that were approached at 1-3 days, two months, and six months postpartum and completed a demographic questionnaire and measures of neuroticism (BFI) and postpartum depression (EPDS), postpartum PTSD (City Birth Trauma Scale) and bonding (PBQ). Obstetric data were taken from the medical files., Results: Cluster analysis revealed three distinctive clusters: "stable-low" (64.2%), "transient-decreasing" (25.9%), and "stable-high" (9.9%). Neuroticism, general-related PTSD symptoms, and bonding were associated with differences between all trajectories. Birth-related PTSD symptoms were associated with differences between both stable-high and transient-decreasing trajectories and the stable-low trajectory. Purpose: To compare the prevalence of emotional and physical intimate partner violence (IPV) across pregnancy and the first year postpartum in those with and without clinical depression and assess the association between maternal childhood trauma, current stressful life events and depression and IPV over the perinatal period., Methods: Data were obtained from 505 pregnant women from the Mercy Pregnancy and Emotional Wellbeing Study (MPEWS), a cohort study with data collected across pregnancy until 12 months postpartum. Maternal antenatal depression was measured using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-IV) with repeat measurement of perinatal depressive symptoms using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Trauma was measured using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and experiences of physical and emotional intimate partner violence using items in the Stressful Life Events Scale., Results: Women experiencing IPV across the perinatal period were significantly more likely to score over 13 on the EPDS (p < .001) at each timepoint in pregnancy and the postpartum and physical IPV was associated with clinical depression. Further, a history of childhood trauma and current additional stressful life events were significantly associated with reporting current IPV in the perinatal period., Conclusions: This study confirmed the risk factors of childhood trauma and current stressful life events for reporting experiences of IPV in the perinatal period. Furthermore, women experiencing IPV reported higher depressive symptoms, providing evidence supporting the value of assessing those women who screen higher on the EPDS for IPV. Purpose: To assess Black women's exposure to and appraisal of racism-related stress during the postpartum period and to distinguish its impact on three indicators of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) symptoms., Methods: Data from the Black Mothers' Mental Wellness Study (N = 231) and linear regression models estimated the associations between racism-related stress and the PMAD indicators: 3-item Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS-3), 8-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8), and PHQ-15., Results: The majority of participants (80.5%, N = 186) experienced racism a few times a year or more, of which 37.1% (N = 69) were bothered somewhat and 19.3% (N = 36) a lot. Racism-related stress, income, level of education, and history of mental health diagnosis explained greater variance in PMAD symptoms as measured by the PHQ-8 score (R 2  = 0.58, p =  < 0.001) compared to the EPDS-3 (R 2  = 0.46, p =  < 0.001) or the PHQ-15 (R 2  = 0.14, p = 0.035)., Conclusions: Racism is a stressor for Black women living in Los Angeles County, California. Racism-related stress and emotional expression of PMAD symptoms were salient to the postpartum mental health of the Black women in this study. Background: Mother-to-infant bonding (MIB) is foundational for nurturing behaviors and an infant's development. Identifying risk factors for difficulties or problems in MIB is vital. However, traditional research often dichotomizes MIB using cutoff thresholds, overlooking its underlying complexities. This research utilizes latent profile analysis (LPA) to discern MIB subtypes in a nationwide Japanese dataset., Methods: We conducted LPA on data from the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS), collected from 3,877 postpartum women within one year of childbirth. To empirically validate the derived profiles, we examined their associated risk factors, focusing on sociodemographic, health, and perinatal variables., Results: Four distinct MIB profiles emerged. Profile 1 indicated minimal difficulties, while Profile 4 exhibited severe multifaceted difficulties. Profiles 2 and 3 showed moderate difficulties distinguished by lack of positive affection and presence of negative affection (especially indifference), respectively. Compared to Profile 1, women in Profiles 2-4 had a higher likelihood of postpartum depression and low family support. Each profile also presented unique risk factors: medium family support in Profile 2, maternal working status in Profile 3, and pre-pregnancy underweight status in Profile 4. Notably, both Profiles 3 and 4 were also linked to increased feelings of loneliness since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic., Conclusion: This study represents the first application of LPA to MIB, revealing distinct subtypes and their respective risk profiles. Background: This short communication explores the interrelationships between depressed mood and sleep disturbances in one-year postpartum period., Methods: Utilizing data from the Interaction of Gene and Environment of Depression during PostPartum Cohort (IGEDEPP) involving 3310 French postpartum women, we employed a cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) to analyze the relationships between these two symptoms, across three time points (immediate postpartum [<1 week after delivery], early postpartum [<2 months after delivery], and late postpartum [2 months to 1 years after delivery])., Results: Depressed mood significantly influences sleep disturbances in late postpartum (β = 0.096, z-value = 7.4; p < 0.001) but not in early postpartum (p-value = 0.9). We found no cross-lagged influence of sleep disturbances on depressed mood in early (p = 0.066) or in late postpartum (p = 0.060). Introduction: The period from pregnancy to postpartum is a vulnerable time with an increased risk of mental illness. The COVID-19 pandemic led to restrictions in peripartum care, such as infection control measures, or restrictions regarding accompanying persons., Material and Methods: Effects of COVID-19-related restrictions on the psyche and well-being during the peripartum period in Austria were retrospectively assessed using a partially standardized online questionnaire. In addition to closed questions on restrictions and psychological stress, this also contained the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)., Results: Data from 850 women who had given birth during the pandemic were included in the analysis. In 8.5% of cases, appointments were canceled during prenatal care, 10.7% had to wear a face mask during the birth. One in 10 women had to cope with the birth and one in 5 with the puerperium without a companion. Unaccompanied women were significantly less likely to feel well cared for during the birth, more likely to feel alone in the puerperium and, according to the EPDS score, were more likely (39% vs. 20%; p<0.001) to have a high probability of postpartum depression., Conclusions: The pandemic-related restrictions led to anxiety, worry, loneliness and an increased risk of depression during the peripartum period. The balance of mental health was negatively affected by measures and restrictions. Maternal depressive symptoms are a crucial risk factor for children's internalizing problems, though positive mother-child relationships may buffer this risk transmission. Mother-child physiological coregulation (e.g., synchrony) has emerged as a potentially important mechanism of developmental psychopathology and may play a role in the transmission of internalizing symptoms. In this two-wave longitudinal study, we examined whether and how mother-infant physiological synchrony (of respiratory sinus arrhythmia; RSA) moderated the association between maternal postnatal depressive symptoms and children's internalizing problems in a rural, low-SES community sample ( N = 166 dyads). At 6 months, mother-infant RSA synchrony and infant negative affect were assessed during free play. Mother reported their depressive symptoms at 6 months and children's internalizing problems at 24 months. Multilevel structural equation models indicated that mother-infant dyads demonstrated significant and positive RSA synchrony on average and RSA synchrony significantly moderated the association between maternal depressive symptoms and children's internalizing problems even after controlling for infant negative affect. Greater maternal depressive symptoms were associated with higher child internalizing problems when RSA synchrony was lower but not when it was higher. This finding suggests that mother-infant RSA synchrony may operate as a resilience factor for the intergenerational transmission of internalizing symptoms in community samples.

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental health condition that affects women in a silent and covert way and is not clearly visible to the community or to health care providers. Untreated PPD has significant and long-term consequences on the mother and their child. This study aims to assess the risk of postpartum depression among women in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and its determinants., Method: This is a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study conducted at primary healthcare centers in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The target population is women visiting the well-child vaccination clinics for their infants' vaccination. The questionnaire used consisted of socio-demographic characteristics, important histories such as obstetric, medical, and social histories, and the Edinburgh Post Partum depression scale EPPS. EPPS is a validated tool used to evaluate the probability of postpartum depression., Results: The probability of postpartum depression for women visiting the well child care clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during the study period was 35%, One-third. 10% had high risk, 7% had moderate risk, and 18% had mild risk. Using logistic and linear regression, there was an association identified between postpartum depression risk and the presence of weight concern and employment status OR 5.499(2.618-11.548) and OR 0.483 (0.246-0.951), respectively (P < 0.005). From the total sample, 3.7% responded quite often or sometimes to the question of having the intention to harm themselves., Conclusion: EPDS is recommended to be used routinely to screen women in the postnatal period. This high prevalence of risk of postpartum depression in the UAE (One in three women) calls for a well-prepared healthcare system and community. Healthcare providers need to be prepared with better knowledge, practice, and management strategies to care for these women, for early identification and management. Background: Violence against women is a critical public health issue that adversely affects physical and mental health, contributing to injuries, chronic conditions, and mental health disorders. This study addresses the gap in understanding the relationship between spousal violence with maternal functioning and mental health in postpartum mothers., Methods: This Prospective study was conducted on 316 postpartum women who gave birth in Al-Zahra and Taleghani Educational Treatment Centers in Tabriz, Iran, from June 2023 to October 2023. Participants were selected using convenience sampling and followed up for 6-8 weeks. The data were collected using the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2), the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the Postpartum Specific Anxiety Scale (PSAS), and the Barkin Index of Maternal Functioning (BIMF). A general linear model, adjusted for individual, social, and obstetric variables, was used to determine the relationship between domestic violence, maternal functioning, depression and anxiety., Results: Most women (84%) experienced one or more types of intimate partner violence (IPV), including psychological, physical, or sexual abuse. About one-third (32.9%) reported psychological abuse, 21.2% physical violence, 49.4% sexual coercion, and 6.3% reported injuries. The adjusted general linear model showed that the mean depression score was lower in individuals without any experience of violence compared to those who had experienced any violence (β: -1.75; 95% CI: -3.40 to -0.10; p = 0.038). The mean depression score was significantly higher in homemakers compared to employed individuals (β = 3.53; 95% CI = 1.22 to 5.84, p = 0.003). The mean maternal functioning score was significantly higher in those who had not experienced mild physical violence compared to those who had (β = 2.94; 95% CI = 0.34 to 5.55, p = 0.027). The mean anxiety score was lower in individuals with high income (β: -3.38; 95% CI: -5.73 to -1.04; p = 0.005) and moderate income (β: -2.21; 95% CI: -4.35 to -0.07; p = 0.043) compared to those with low income., Conclusion: The findings reveal a high prevalence of violence, particularly sexual coercion, significantly affecting maternal functioning and mental health. Socioeconomic factors also play a crucial role in postpartum mental health. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal mental health during pregnancy and the postpartum period., Methods: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic situation during and post pregnancy was addressed on three main factors; maternal mental health, mother-child bonding, and maternal self-confidence. To do this, two different patient cohorts were compared; data from one cohort was collected pre-pandemic, and data was collected from the other cohort at the beginning of the pandemic. Questionnaires were used to collect data regarding depressive symptoms (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale [EPDS]), anxiety (State Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI]), maternal self-confidence (Lips Maternal Self-Confidence Scale [LMSCS]) and mother-child bonding (Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire [PBQ])., Results: There were no significant differences in depressive symptoms (EPDS with an average median of 4.00-5.00) or anxiety (STAI with an average median of 29.00-33.00) between the cohorts. However, the quality of postpartum maternal bonding was higher at 3-6 months in the pandemic cohort, which was also influenced by education and the mode and number of births. The maternal self-confidence was lower in the pandemic sample, also depending on the mode of birth delivery., Conclusions: In this study, a differential effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on mother-child bonding and maternal self-confidence was observed. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between disrespect and abuse during labor and the risk of postpartum depression. This is a cross-sectional study carried out with women from the rural and urban areas of Caxias, Maranhão State, Brazil. Postpartum depression was considered the dependent variable, assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. The independent variables were sociodemographic characteristics, mental health history, behavioral aspects, obstetric characteristics and self-perception of disrespect and abuse during labor. Pearson's chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were used to assess the association between postpartum depression and disrespect and abuse during labor. A total of 190 women were interviewed. The prevalence of postpartum depression was 16.3%. The occurrence of at least one type of disrespect and abuse during labor was 97.4%, with health system conditions and restrictions predominating (94.7%). More than half of the women (66.3%) suffered two forms of disrespect and abuse during labor, while three or more forms were reported by 22.6%. Suffering two (adjustedOR = 3.01; 95%CI 1.08-8.33) and three or more forms of disrespect and abuse during labor (adjustedOR = 3.41; 95%CI: 1.68-24.40) increased the chance of postpartum depression. There was a significant association between disrespect and abuse during labor and postpartum depression, and dignified and respectful care for women during childbirth were found to reduce the risk of postpartum depression symptoms.

Background: This study aims to describe maternal depressive symptoms (MDS) trajectories in a longitudinal study extending from pregnancy to 27 years after the birth of the firstborn child. We also explored the associations of both MDS trajectories and child internalizing and externalizing problem trajectories with maternal adjustment (adaptive functioning, emotional and behavioral problems)., Methods: The population-based study was conducted in Tampere, Finland, and the sample comprised 356 first-time mothers. MDS were screened with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale during pregnancy, first week after delivery, 2 and 6 months postnatally, and when the child was 4-5, 8-9, 16-17, and 26-27 years of age. The internalizing and externalizing problems of the children were assessed with the Child Behavior Checklist when the child was 4-5, 8-9, and 16-17 years of age. Maternal adaptive functioning and internalizing and externalizing problems were assessed with the Adult Self Report at 26-27 years after the birth of the first child. Complete follow-up data were available for 168 mothers., Results: We describe a three-group trajectory model of MDS (High Stable, Low Stable, Very Low). Elevated depressive symptom patterns were associated with less optimal maternal outcomes regarding both adaptive and problem dimensions. Background: Mothers with a history of childhood maltreatment (CM) are particularly vulnerable to postpartum mental health changes. Variability in mental health trajectories is present over the first 18-months postpartum. Little is known about the potentially unique impacts of post-traumatic change or resilience on later postpartum mental health., Methods: Participants (N = 97) completed questionnaires over the first 18-months postpartum measuring demographic risk, mental health symptoms, traumatic experiences, and resilience. Mothers also completed an interview measure coded for post-traumatic changes at 6-months postpartum. Multinomial logistic regression models examined post-traumatic change and resilience factors as predictors of mothers' longitudinal latent mental health trajectory., Results: Three classes of latent postpartum mental health emerged: low-symptom, vulnerable, and chronic high-risk. Mothers reporting stronger positive post-traumatic changes were more likely to be in the low-symptom class than the chronic high-risk class (B = -1.082, p = .01). Mothers reporting stronger negative post-traumatic changes were more likely to be in the vulnerable class (B = 0.778, p = .006) or chronic high-risk class (B = 0.906, p = .046) than the low-symptom class. Resilience was not predictive of mental health class., Limitations: Findings are correlational, and causal effects between post-traumatic growth and mental health symptoms cannot be assumed. Mothers who consented to the interview may not be fully representative of all women who have experienced CM, limiting generalizability of findings., Conclusions: Positive post-traumatic change is associated with reduced psychopathology. Administration mode of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) may influence responses. We assessed if Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale - Depression subscale (HADS-D) item responses and scores were associated with administration mode. We compared (1) self-administration versus interview-administration; within self-administration (2) research or medical setting versus private; and (3) pen-and-paper versus electronic; and within interview-administration (4) in-person versus phone. We analysed individual participant data meta-analysis datasets with item-level data for the PHQ-9 (N = 34,529), EPDS (N = 16,813), and HADS-D (N = 16,768). We used multiple indicator multiple cause models to assess differential item functioning (DIF) by administration mode. We found statistically significant DIF for most items on all measures due to large samples, but influence on total scores was negligible. In 10 comparisons conducted across the PHQ-9, EPDS, and HADS-D, Pearson's correlations and intraclass correlation coefficients between latent depression symptom scores from models that did or did not account for DIF were between 0.995 and 1.000. Total PHQ-9, EPDS, and HADS-D scores did not differ materially across administration modes. Background: Immigrant Latinas (who are foreign-born but now reside in the USA) are at greater risk for developing postpartum depression than the general perinatal population, but many face barriers to treatment. To address these barriers, we adapted the Mothers and Babies Course-an evidence-based intervention for postpartum depression prevention-to a virtual group format. Additional adaptations are inclusion of tailored supplemental child health content and nutrition benefit assistance. We are partnering with Early Learning Centers (ELC) across the state of Maryland to deliver and test the adapted intervention., Methods: The design is a Hybrid Type I Effectiveness-Implementation Trial. A total of 300 participants will be individually randomized to immediate (N = 150) versus delayed (N = 150) receipt of the intervention, Mothers and Babies Virtual Group (MB-VG). The intervention will be delivered by trained Early Learning Center staff. The primary outcomes are depressive symptoms (measured via the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale), parenting self-efficacy (measured via the Parental Cognition and Conduct Towards the Infant Scale (PACOTIS) Parenting Self-Efficacy subscale), and parenting responsiveness (measured via the Maternal Infant Responsiveness Instrument) at 1-week, 3-month, and 6-month post-intervention. Depressive episodes (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-V- Disorders Research Version) at 3-month and 6-month post-intervention will also be assessed. Secondary outcomes include social support, mood management, anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, food insecurity, and mental health stigma at 1-week, 3-month, and 6-month post-intervention. Exploratory child outcomes are dysregulation and school readiness at 6-month post-intervention. Background: Despite its known benefits, breastfeeding rates among mothers with perinatal mental health conditions are staggeringly low. Systematic evidence on experiences of breastfeeding among women with perinatal mental health conditions is limited. This systematic review was designed to synthesise existing literature on breastfeeding experiences of women with a wide range of perinatal mental health conditions., Methods: A systematic search of five databases was carried out considering published qualitative research between 2003 and November 2021. Two reviewers conducted study selection, data extraction and critical appraisal of included studies independently and data were synthesised thematically., Results: Seventeen articles were included in this review. These included a variety of perinatal mental health conditions (e.g., postnatal depression, post-traumatic stress disorders, previous severe mental illnesses, eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders). The emerging themes and subthemes included: (1) Vulnerabilities: Expectations versus reality; Self-perception as a mother; Isolation. (2) Positive outcomes: Bonding and closeness; Sense of achievement. (3) Challenges: Striving for control; Inconsistent advice and lack of support; Concerns over medication safety; and Perceived impact on milk quality and supply., Conclusions: Positive breastfeeding experiences of mothers with perinatal mental health conditions can mediate positive outcomes such as enhanced mother/infant bonding, increased self-esteem, and a perceived potential for healing. Alternatively, a lack of consistent support and advice from healthcare professionals, particularly around health concerns and medication safety, can lead to feelings of confusion, negatively impact breastfeeding choices, and potentially aggravate perinatal mental health symptoms. Background: Worldwide, 10% of postpartum women experience postpartum depression, which can lead to diverse sequalae at individual, family, and societal levels. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that 17% of women experience depression in the postpartum period, which could be an underestimate as 48% of women in the region do not receive postnatal care (81% in Ethiopia and 51% in Guinea) and a large share of postpartum depression remains undiagnosed and untreated as a result. Globally, despite a critical evidence gap, there are growing reports of postpartum depression among women mistreated (disrespected and abused) during childbirth in health facilities, making a strong case to examine the association between mistreatment and postpartum depression. This study in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Conakry (Guinea) uses a mixed methods design to 1) examine the link between mistreatment and postpartum depression, 2) explore the health system capacity to provide respectful maternity care and maternal mental health services, and 3) explore the experiences of women in accessing care and support for postpartum depression., Methods: We will conduct a prospective longitudinal survey of women (434 in Addis Ababa and 408 in Conakry) from the third trimester of pregnancy to eight weeks postpartum and carry out in-depth interviews with key health system informants (20-25 in each city) and women who recovered from a clinically confirmed episode of postpartum depression (15-25 in each city). Quantitative data from the women's survey will be analysed using a multilevel mixed-effects model; qualitative data from key-informants will be analysed by using a hybrid thematic analysis approach, whereas data from women's in-depth interviews will be analysed using the phenomenological approach. The inclusion of two different settings in our study (Addis Ababa and Conakry) will enable us to apply a comparative health systems lens to explore the dynamics of respectful maternity care and maternal mental health services within the broader health systems of the two countries (Ethiopia and Guinea)., Discussion: The findings from this study will inform actions aimed at mitigating the mistreatment of women in maternity settings and improving promotive, preventive, and treatment interventions for postpartum depression in Ethiopia and Guinea. Background: There are many factors effective on occurrence of post-partum anxiety and depression. COVID-19 pandemic, as a major health crisis, affected many countries and had undesirable mental health outcomes, especially for the vulnerable population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of post-partum anxiety and depression and their related factors during COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: The present descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 360 mothers who delivered their child during COVID-19 pandemic and had referred to the comprehensive urban health canter of Lenjan city two months after their delivery (from November 10th, 2021, until March 19th, 2022). Data were gathered using 3 questionnaires including demographic characteristics, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 24 and the level of significance was set at p < 0.05., Results: The prevalence of anxiety and post-partum depression was 27% and 20%, respectively. None of the demographic characteristics had a significant relationship with anxiety and depression. Related factors to post-partum anxiety included desired pregnancy, premenstrual syndrome, marital conflicts, history of mother's hospitalization due to COVID-19, compliance rate with preventive health measures for COVID-19, stressful events, and social support., Conclusion: It is suggested to screen mothers to detect significant related factors of post-partum anxiety and depression in other future pandemics or epidemics to support them., (© 2024. Objective: This prospective study aimed to assess couples' psychological status during the perinatal period to identify those at risk for postpartum depression., Methods: Conducted at Lyon University Hospital from March to July 2022, the study enrolled pregnant women without progressive psychiatric disorders or obstetric risk factors, and their partners. Participants completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at three points: during the 9th month of pregnancy, immediate postpartum, and 6-8 weeks after delivery. A score ≥10 on the EPDS indicated depression risk. A score ≥10 on the EPDS indicate depression risk. The primary endpoint was EPDS scores throughout the perinatal period., Results: Ninety-five couples participated; 96% of patients and 68% of partners completed pre-delivery questionnaires, 81% and 71% during maternity stay, and 64% and 46% postpartum, respectively. Overall, 15% of patients and 1% of partners had EPDS scores >10 in the postpartum period. Psychiatric history and emergency cesarean sections were associated with higher immediate postpartum EPDS scores in patients [Beta 3.7 points, 95% CI 0.91; 6.4 and Beta 5.2 points, 2.2; 8.1, respectively]. Episiotomy was associated with higher EPDS scores in partners. No significant association between the different factors studied and the EPDS score was found at 6-8 weeks postpartum in patients nor their partners., Conclusions: While specific risk factors for persistent perinatal depression in couples were not identified, a notable proportion of patients exhibited high EPDS scores. Screening all couples during prepartum and postpartum periods is crucial, regardless of identified risk factors.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the levels of postpartum fatigue, parenting stress, family support, and postpartum depression (PPD) experienced by first-time Chinese mothers and to investigate their impact on PPD., Methods: This cross-sectional survey involved 150 primigravida women attending postnatal checkups in Hebi City, Henan Province, China. Demographic data and information on environmental variables (living conditions, family relationships), postpartum fatigue, parenting stress, family support (expected vs. actual level), and PPD were collected., Results: The average age of the women was 26.25 years (SD, ±3.90), with 78.7% at risk for PPD (score ≥10). Significant correlations were found between PPD and postpartum fatigue (r=.63, p<.001), parenting stress (r=.59, p<.001), and family support (r=.40, p<.001). In model 1, which examined the influence of women's demographic variables on PPD, significant factors included a poor relationship with parents (β=.24, p=.001), a poor relationship with parents-in-law (β=.18, p=.029), and a poor relationship with the husband (β=.20, p=.013). When the three research variables were incorporated into model 2, the factors contributing to a higher level of PPD included a poor relationship with parents-in-law (β=.14, p=.033), increased postpartum fatigue (β=.37, p<.001), increased parenting stress (β=.33, p<.001), and less family support than expected (β=.12, p=.048)., Conclusion: The most critical factors influencing PPD include postpartum fatigue, parenting stress, poor relationships with parents-in-law, and low family support among Chinese primiparas. To mitigate PPD levels, healthcare professionals should screen mothers for depression in outpatient clinics and offer education and counseling to both mothers and their families or companions regarding PPD.

Purpose: This study investigated the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) and explored associated factors among mothers attending postnatal care in Bhutan., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from August to November 2023 at a national referral hospital in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. In total, 314 mothers were recruited. Sociodemographic, psychosocial, obstetric, and infant-related data were collected using questionnaires. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, with a threshold of ≥11, was employed to screen for PPD, and logistic regression was used to test the potential factors., Results: The prevalence of PPD was 14.97%. Mothers with a perceived change in body image (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 4.40; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.91-10.17; p=.001), perceived heightened stress after delivery (AOR, 3.74; 95% CI, 1.45-9.67; p=.006), poor relationship with inlaws (AOR, 2.57; 95% CI, 1.24-5.30; p=. 011), and negative birth experience (AOR, 2.42; 95% CI, 1.17-5.00; p=.016) demonstrated significantly higher odds of developing PPD. This study in China aimed to explore the impact of maternal depression on infant-mother attachment and whether parenting status moderated this relationship. Women underwent depression assessments at seven perinatal time points: ≤12, 17, 21, 31, and 37 weeks of pregnancy, as well as 1 and 6 weeks postpartum. Those completing at least three times assessments, along with their infants, were invited for infant-mother attachment assessment at 12-18 months postpartum. Among 233 infant-mother pairs completing the infant-mother attachment assessment, 62 and 80 mothers had postnatal depression and perinatal major depression, respectively; 75 (32.2%) of infants exhibited insecure attachment. While infants whose mothers had maternal depression showed a slightly elevated rate of insecure attachment, this difference did not achieve statistical significance. Additionally, parenting status did not influence the relationship between maternal depression and infant-mother attachment. Nevertheless, the study hinted that more physical contact between mother and infant might reduce insecure attachment likelihood. Future research should expand sample sizes and assessment points for better understanding. The recent COVID-19 global emergency may have ripple effects on mental health of many people worldwide. This is especially true for populations like birthing and postpartum women where many changes to daily routines, access to medical care, work-related routines and socialization were experienced. This brief report presents data from an ongoing cohort study aiming to describe maternal mental health during the pandemic T12 (March 2020 to April 2021) with post-pandemic T2 (May 2022 to May 2023) of mothers followed in Puerto Rico. 47 out of 100 mothers have been recalled and assessed with psychosocial interviews (COPE-IUS) and assessments of anxiety (GAD-7) and depression (PHQ-9). Paired t-test revealed mean scores of depressions (PHQ-9) were significantly higher for T2 with a mean of 6.35 and a range of 4.4+/- than for T1 where mean was 5.15 (+/- 2.9), t=-1.954, df=45, p < .05. Similarly, anxiety scores (GAD-7) were significantly higher in T2 6.67 (4.2) than for T1 5.35 (3.7), t=-1.8, df=45, p < .05. Also, COPE-IUS Post-pandemic psychosocial interview results evidence that 80% of mothers do not feel the COVID-19 pandemic is a significant stressor at T2 and are able to maintain routine activities with no social distancing measures. However, reports of loneliness, sadness, worry, and fear continue to be present. Our findings point to the need to further identify other contributing factors to the deterioration of maternal mental health during the perinatal/peripartum period (pregnancy, birth, and postpartum) in Puerto Rico. Possibly the effects of repeated adversity that has been present in the island (multiple environmental stressors, history of traumatic experiences, and constant hardships) may all have cumulative impact over maternal mental health during the perinatal/peripartum period.

Background: Postpartum contraception plays a critical role in reducing the occurrence of rapid subsequent pregnancy, offering individuals reproductive choice, and promoting overall reproductive planning and well-being. In this study, we investigated the relationship between psychosocial stress during pregnancy, postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS), and postpartum contraceptive use. Materials and Methods: We analyzed data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (2012-2019), which included comprehensive information about maternal experiences, views, and needs before, during, and after pregnancy from four states and a large city, with a total sample size of N  = 36,356. We conducted descriptive analyses as well as adjusted multivariable logistic regression models. Main Findings: Our findings demonstrate significant negative associations between partner-related (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.82, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.76-0.89, p  ≤ 0.001) and trauma-related (aOR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.75-0.92, p  ≤ 0.001) stressors and postpartum contraceptive use. Additionally, we observed a negative association between PDS and postpartum contraceptive use (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.80-0.97, p  ≤ 0.01), indicating that individuals experiencing PDS are less likely to utilize contraception after giving birth. Furthermore, our study highlights racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and parity postpartum contraceptive use disparities. Conclusions: Our findings emphasize the importance of incorporating psychosocial stressors and mental health into the promotion of effective postpartum contraception practices. These results have valuable implications for health care providers, policymakers, and researchers as they can guide the development of targeted interventions and support systems to contribute to improved reproductive health outcomes.

Study Objectives: Maternal depressive symptoms (MDS) affect most women during the first year postpartum. Mothers provide most of the nighttime care for infants, so studying the relationship between MDS and infant sleep location (ISL) is highly relevant to understanding maternal mental health over the first year of life and beyond. Infant sleep is studied by anthropologists, health care providers, and psychologists, with very little communication across disciplines. This review aimed to determine whether there is a predictive relationship between MDS and ISL., Methods: This systematic review searched 6 databases with terms related to maternal mood and ISL. Final analysis included 14 published studies, analyzed with narrative synthesis and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Included studies directly compared ISL and MDS., Results: Five studies showed no relationship between ISL and MDS, and 1 study found bedsharing reduced MDS. Five studies found cosleeping was related to higher MDS although directionality is mixed or missing, and 3 studies found an association at some ages or for some populations only. Examining studies according to type of infant sleep assessment, study design, age of infant, or breastfeeding status failed to detect consistent patterns., Conclusions: A variety of study designs, types and definitions of variable measures, sample recruitment, and study outcomes prevent detection of a consistent relationship between MDS and ISL. Background: Postpartum depression is among the most common complications associated with child-bearing having a period prevalence rate of 17%. Despite the prevalence of postpartum depression, recognition and treatment remains low., Methods: This paper examines the predictors of help-seeking behavior among a sample (N = 326) of postpartum women. A cross-sectional survey was deployed, and participants were recruited via social media through snowball and convenient sampling techniques., Results: Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the data. Results indicate the severity of depression and favorable attitudes toward help-seeking were predictors of help-seeking behavior among postpartum women in this sample., Discussion/conclusion: This study has implications for healthcare workers, including the allied health professions. Access to treatment is, in part, influenced by a woman's ability to ask for help from health professionals. Objective: A silent health crisis in the United States is the underdiagnosed and undertreated mental health of women related to childbirth. This discussion paper describes the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS) with its scoring and interpretation along with its psychometric testing and translations., Method: In addition to the studies conducted by the instrument developers, databases were searched for studies where other researchers used the PDSS to assess postpartum depressive symptoms. Studies were included that measured the psychometrics of the scale and studies that reported the translation of the PDSS into other languages., Results: Evidence is presented that the PDSS is a reliable and valid screening scale for use by psychiatric mental health nurses and other health care providers. The scale also has been translated into 14 languages, so it is available to screen non-English speaking mothers., Conclusion: Childbirth is one of the most powerful triggers of psychiatric illness in a woman's life. Postpartum depression is a treatable mental health condition, but first, women need to be screened so they can be identified and referrals made. Objective: To explore the relationship between symptoms of postpartum depression and the number of remote visitations among mothers of infants in the NICU., Design: Retrospective cohort study., Setting: NICU in a medical university in Iwate, Japan., Participants: A total of 89 mothers of infants who spent more than 1 month in the NICU from June 2021 to December 2022., Methods: Participants completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at 4 days and 1 month after birth. We used a one-way analysis of variance with Tukey-Kramer or Games-Howell post hoc tests to examine differences in postpartum depression among three groups based on the frequency of remote visitation: frequent visitation, rare visitation, or no visitation., Results: Of the 89 mothers, 41 scored 9 points or higher on the EPDS conducted 4 days after birth; among them, 14 did not visit, 13 rarely visited, and 14 frequently visited the NICU remotely through a web camera. The rare visitation group had significantly higher EPDS scores 1 month after birth (M = 9.7, SD = 5.2) than the frequent (M = 5.3, SD = 3.7) and no visitation (M = 5.1, SD = 4.2) groups (p < .05). Postpartum depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in women after giving birth. This study was conducted to examine the effect of telecounseling support on depression in primiparous mothers. This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial with a parallel group pretest-posttest design. The study comprised 50 participants each in the intervention and control groups. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with all participants, and the Maternal Information Form and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) were administered. The intervention group received telecounseling for 6 weeks, while the control group received routine postnatal care. After the 6-week period, EPDS was re-administered to both groups. In the intervention group, the EPDS mean score decreased from 7.12 ± 3.96 to 6.34 ± 3.73 after telecounseling (p < 0.001). Conversely, in the control group, the EPDS mean score increased from 6.62 ± 3.55 to 7.90 ± 4.65 without any intervention (p = 0.002). The results indicate that telecounseling is an effective method for reducing the risk of depression among mothers during the postpartum period.
