High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We consider an axion-like particle (ALP) coupled to Standard Model (SM) fermions as a mediator between the SM and a fermionic dark matter (DM) particle. We explore the case where the ALP-SM and/or the ALP-DM couplings are too small to allow for DM generation via standard freeze-out. DM is therefore thermally decoupled from the visible sector and must be generated through either freeze-in or decoupled freeze-out (DFO). In the DFO regime, we present an improved approach to obtain the relic density by solving a set of three stiff coupled Boltzmann equations, one of which describes the energy transfer from the SM to the dark sector. Having determined the region of parameter space where the correct relic density is obtained, we revisit experimental constraints from electron beam dump experiments, rare $B$ and $K$ decays, exotic Higgs decays at the LHC, astrophysics, dark matter searches and cosmology. In particular, for our specific ALP scenario we (re)calculate and improve beam dump, flavour and supernova constraints. Throughout our calculation we implement state-of-the-art chiral perturbation theory results for the ALP partial decay width to hadrons. We find that while the DFO region, which predicts extremely small ALP-fermion couplings, can probably only be constrained by cosmological observables, the freeze-in region covers a wide area of parameter space that may be accessible to other more direct probes. Some of this parameter space is already excluded, but a significant part should be accessible to future collider experiments., Comment: 59 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
The nature of the thermal melting process by which triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnets lose their low-temperature ferrimagnetic three-sublattice order depends on the range of the interactions: It changes character when second and third neighbour ferromagnetic interactions become comparable to the nearest-neighbour antiferromagnetic coupling. We present a detailed numerical characterization of the corresponding threshold at which two-step melting of three-sublattice order gives way to a direct first-order transition at which this order is lost. The multicritical behaviour at this threshold is argued to be in the universality class of the $Z_6$ parafermion conformal field theory with central charge $c=5/4$. The presence of this multicritical threshold influences the melting behaviour and long-wavelength properties over a fairly large range of parameters, and at temperatures that are of the same order as the exchange interactions. It is therefore of potential experimental relevance in the context of easy-axis triangular lattice antiferromagnets that display such low temperature ordering.

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We present a class of dark matter models, in which the dark matter particle is a feebly interacting massive particle (FIMP) produced via the decay of an electrically charged and/or colored parent particle. Given the feeble interaction, dark matter is produced via the freeze-in mechanism and the parent particle is long-lived. The latter leads to interesting collider signatures. We study current LHC constrains on our models arising from searches for heavy charged particles, disappearing tracks, displaced leptons and displaced vertices. We demonstrate not only that collider searches can be a powerful probe of the freeze-in dark matter models under consideration, but that an observation can lead as well to interesting insights on the reheating temperature and thus on the validity of certain baryogenesis models., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Particles beyond the Standard Model (SM) can generically have lifetimes that are long compared to SM particles at the weak scale. When produced at experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, these long-lived particles (LLPs) can decay far from the interaction vertex of the primary proton-proton collision. Such LLP signatures are distinct from those of promptly decaying particles that are targeted by the majority of searches for new physics at the LHC, often requiring customized techniques to identify, for example, significantly displaced decay vertices, tracks with atypical properties, and short track segments. Given their non-standard nature, a comprehensive overview of LLP signatures at the LHC is beneficial to ensure that possible avenues of the discovery of new physics are not overlooked. Here we report on the joint work of a community of theorists and experimentalists with the ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb experiments-as well as those working on dedicated experiments such as MoEDAL, milliQan, MATHUSLA, CODEX-b, and FASER-to survey the current state of LLP searches at the LHC, and to chart a path for the development of LLP searches into the future, both in the upcoming Run 3 and at the high-luminosity LHC. The work is organized around the current and future potential capabilities of LHC experiments to generally discover new LLPs, and takes a signature-based approach to surveying classes of models that give rise to LLPs rather than emphasizing any particular theory motivation. We develop a set of simplified models; assess the coverage of current searches; document known, often unexpected backgrounds; explore the capabilities of proposed detector upgrades; provide recommendations for the presentation of search results; and look towards the newest frontiers, namely high-multiplicity 'dark showers', highlighting opportunities for expanding the LHC reach for these signals.

We propose simple freeze-in models where the observed dark matter abundance is explained via the decay of an electrically charged and/or coloured parent particle into Feebly Interacting Massive Particles (FIMP). The parent particle is long-lived and yields a wide variety of LHC signatures depending on its lifetime and quantum numbers. We assess the current constraints and future high luminosity reach of these scenarios at the LHC from searches for heavy stable charged particles, disappearing tracks, displaced vertices and displaced leptons. We show that the LHC constitutes a powerful probe of freeze-in dark matter and can further provide interesting insights on the validity of vanilla baryogenesis and leptogenesis scenarios.

There is mounting evidence that chronic, low-grade inflammation driven by Th1/Th17 cells and M1 macrophages, is a critical link between obesity and insulin resistance. IL-25 promotes development of a Th2 immune response and M2 macrophages that counteract the inflammation associated with obesity and T2D.Methods: Mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 16 weeks and then treated with IL-25 or BSA as a control for 21 days. Body weight, blood glucose levels, intraperitoneal glucose tolerance, and gene expression were evaluated in mice treated with BSA or IL-25. Ob/ob mice fed a normal control diet were also treated with BSA or IL-25 and body weight and blood glucose levels were measured. Transepithelial electrical resistance and sodium-linked glucose absorption were determined in muscle-free small intestinal tissue and glucose absorption assessed in vitro in intestinal epithelial and skeletal muscle cell lines. Results: Administration of IL-25 to HFD fed mice reversed glucose intolerance, an effect mediated in part by reduction in SGLT-1 activity and Glut2 expression. Importantly, the improved glucose tolerance in HFD mice treated with IL-25 was maintained for several weeks post-treatment indicating long-term changes in glucose metabolism in obese mice. Glucose intolerance was also reversed by IL-25 treatment in genetically obese ob/ob mice without inducing weight loss. In vitro studies demonstrated that glucose absorption was inhibited by IL-25 treatment in the epithelial IPEC-1 cells but increased glucose absorption in the L6 skeletal muscle cells. This supports a direct cell-specific effect of IL-25 on glucose metabolism. Conclusion: These results suggest that the IL-25 pathway may be a useful target for the treatment of metabolic syndrome. Keywords: metabolic syndrome, glucose, ob/ob, rodent

BLOCK designs ,DESIGN - Abstract
The usual procedure for indentifying the block design to be connected is rank of C matrix (information matrix) should be (v - 1), if this violates then design becomes disconnected. Several authors obtained robustness criteria against the loss of one block or more than one blocks based on connected property. Because connectedness is one of the important criteria to find the robustness of the residual design. Tsai and Liao (2013) discussed the minimum break down criteria and connectedness criteria of block design to obtain the robust design against the lost of whole block. In this investigation, we have developed other criteria, which is alternate method of Tsai and Liao (2013) to find connectedness of the block design based on block information matrix, Fd of the block design of size two. Further, we have also observed as numbers of blocks are being deleted, the overall A-efficiency of the residual design decreases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we report the effect of write voltage and frequency on memristor based Resistive Random Access Memory (RRAM). The above said parameters have been investigated on the linear drift model of memristor. With a variation of write voltage from 0.2V to 1.2V and a subsequent frequency modulation from 1, 2, 4, 10, 100 and 200 Hz the corresponding effects on memory window, Low Resistance State (LRS) and High Resistance State (HRS) have been reported. Thus the lifetime ({\tau}) reliability analysis of memristor based RRAM is carried out using above results. It is found that, the HRS is independent of write voltage, whereas LRS shows dependency on write voltage and frequency. The simulation results showcase that the memristor possess higher memory window and lifetime ({\tau}) in the higher voltage with lower frequency region, which has been attributed to the fewer data losses in the memory architecture., Comment: Pages-11, figures-6

We report simulation of nanostructured memristor device using piecewise linear and nonlinear window functions for RRAM and neuromorphic applications. The linear drift model of memristor has been exploited for the simulation purpose with the linear and non-linear window function as the mathematical and scripting basis. The results evidences that the piecewise linear window function can aptly simulate the memristor characteristics pertaining to RRAM application. However, the nonlinear window function could exhibit the nonlinear phenomenon in simulation only at the lower magnitude of control parameter. This has motivated us to propose a new nonlinear window function for emulating the simulation model of the memristor. Interestingly, the proposed window function is scalable up to f(x)=1 and exhibits the nonlinear behavior at higher magnitude of control parameter. Moreover, the simulation results of proposed nonlinear window function are encouraging and reveals the smooth nonlinear change from LRS to HRS and vice versa and therefore useful for the neuromorphic applications., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Data were collected from the medical records of clinics/hospitals across 623 study sites in India. Patients of either sex and aged 18– 45 years were included. Demographic details (age, sex, anthropometric measurement), medical and family history, sedentary lifestyle, smoking status and alcohol consumption data were extracted. Descriptive and comparative analysis (Mann–Whitney U and chi-squared test) was done. Results: Out of 15,006 young patients diagnosed with hypertension (men=63.6%), 65.7% belonged to the age group of > 35– 45 years. The median body mass index was 27.0 kg/m2. Patients diagnosed with only hypertension were 29.1% while other predominant comorbidities with hypertension were diabetes mellitus (42.4%) and dyslipidemia (7.8%). Hypertension with diabetes mellitus were prevalent in the age group of > 35– 45 years (43.8%). More than half of the patients with hypertension (n=7656) had a sedentary lifestyle. Overall, 35.6%, 47.3%, and 56.7% of the patients were alcoholic, smokers (present and former), and had a family history of hypertension, respectively. Conclusion: The results showed that among the young population, hypertension was common in the age group of > 35– 45 years and diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia were common comorbidities. Family history, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, alcohol consumption, and body mass index may also contribute to hypertension. Keywords: diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, prevalence, young population

Slope instability due to tectonic, hydrological and anthropogenic activities cause severe landslides in Himalaya. Joshimath, a densely populated Himalayan town witnessed a catastrophic landslide event during December 2022 and January 2023 causing damages to ∼700 buildings. We use Interferometric synthetic aperture radar, Global Positioning System and rainfall measurements to probe the kinematics of the Joshimath landslide. We separate the seasonal and episodic deformation components using singular spectrum analysis. While the low amplitude annual landslide motions are modulated by seasonal precipitation, acceleration phases are triggered by extreme rain events. Our analysis revealed episodes of cascading motions triggered by extreme rain events resulting an overall increase in landslide velocity from −22 mm/yr during 2004–2010 to −325 mm/yr during 2022–2023. We estimate the landslide depth (∼30 m) and hydraulic diffusivity (∼3 × 10−5 m2/s) using a 1‐D pore‐water pressure diffusion model. Our study reveals the importance of systematic monitoring of ground deformation and weather parameters for landslide hazard mitigation. Plain Language Summary: The Himalayas, world's largest and youngest mountain range formed as a result of the India‐Eurasia continental collision hosts thousands of landslides each year related to tectonic and anthropogenic activities. It is important to characterize the landslide kinematics, especially the slow moving landslides at the fast‐developing Himalayan urban centers for hazard assessment. A recent catastrophic landslide event in the Joshimath town in NW Himalaya occurred between December 2022 and January 2023 caused damages to ∼700 buildings leading to mass evacuation. We map the spatio‐temporal evolution of land deformation at Joshimath using about two decades of geodetic measurements and singular spectrum analysis technique. While the decadal‐scale landslide motions match well with the overall increase in rainfall intensity, the episodic accelerations are triggered by extreme rain events. The extreme rainfall event on 19 October 2021, triggered the latest episode of landslide acceleration, which eventually led to the tragic disaster. The present study, for the first time, provides constraints on the landslide depth and hydraulic diffusivity. Our study also emphasis on the systematic monitoring of ground deformation and weather parameters at the Himalayas for an effective landslide hazard preparedness and mitigation. Key Points: Joshimath landslide displays episodic and seasonal kinematic changes; episodic accelerations are triggered by extreme rain eventsThe 19 October 2021 extreme rain event triggered the latest episode of landslide acceleration culminating to the 2022 disasterDepth and hydraulic diffusivity of the landslide is constrained using 1‐D pore‐water pressure diffusion model [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
