Black Cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) is a broadleaved tree species native to Northern- and Central-America which was introduced in many other parts of the world, especially in European countries. In many places it has been classified as an invasive species and its management is subject to hotly debates. This review provides an overview of the existing knowledge on the ecology and management of this species in its native and non-native range, with special focus on Europe. Based on the reviewed literature, Black Cherry is a fast-growing and light-demanding forest gap specialist, which tolerates most soil conditions. Depending on the forest site, the species has an either positive or negative influence on soil conditions and nutrient cycling. It is able to alter the forest species composition and site conditions in its non-native range, necessitating control measures in nature conservation areas. However, the elimination of this species has been unsuccessful. Instead, the silvicultural integration of Black Cherry may provide a cost- and labor-effective alternative with additional benefits for forest owners. As a specialist for disturbed forest sites, the future importance of Black Cherry might increase under a changing climate, not only as an intermediate species in secondary succession, but also as a timber species comparable to other non-native tree species in Europe.

Litter decomposition is a key ecosystem function in forests and varies in response to a range of climatic, edaphic, and local stand characteristics. Disentangling the relative contribution of these factors is challenging, especially along large environmental gradients. In particular, knowledge of the effect of management options, such as tree planting density and species composition, on litter decomposition would be highly valuable in forestry. In this study, we made use of 15 tree diversity experiments spread over eight countries and three continents within the global TreeDivNet network. We evaluated the effects of overstory composition (tree identity, species/mixture composition and species richness), plantation conditions (density and age), and climate (temperature and precipitation) on mass loss (after 3 months and 1 year) of two standardized litters: high-quality green tea and low-quality rooibos tea. Across continents, we found that early-stage decomposition of the low-quality rooibos tea was influenced locally by overstory tree identity. Mass loss of rooibos litter was higher under young gymnosperm overstories compared to angiosperm overstories, but this trend reversed with age of the experiment. Tree species richness did not influence decomposition and explained almost no variation in our multi-continent dataset. Hence, in the young plantations of our study, overstory composition effects on decomposition were mainly driven by tree species identity on decomposer communities and forest microclimates. After 12 months of incubation, mass loss of the high-quality green tea litter was mainly influenced by temperature whereas the low-quality rooibos tea litter decomposition showed stronger relationships with overstory composition and stand age. Our findings highlight that decomposition dynamics are not only affected by climate but also by management options, via litter quality of the identity of planted trees but also by overstory composition and structure.

Nematodes are numerous in soils and play a crucial role in soil food-webs. DNA metabarcoding offers a time-effective alternative to morphology-based assessments of nematode diversity. However, it is unclear how different DNA extraction methods prior to metabarcoding could affect community analysis. We used soils with woody vegetation from a European latitudinal gradient (29 sites, 39 to 79°N, ∼4500 km, covering six biomes) to systematically evaluate the effect of two sources of nematode DNA either directly extracted from soils vs. extracted from nematodes previously isolated from soils hypothesizing that the DNA source material may produce different diversities, community structures and abundances of feeding types. Nematode-sample DNA exhibited a higher richness, while no difference in Shannon diversity was found between the approaches. The DNA sources also created significantly different community structures, with greater differences observed across soil-extracted DNA than nematode-sample DNA. The most overrepresented species in nematode-sample DNA were Heterocephalobus elongatus, Eucephalobus striatus and Hexatylus sp., whereas Phasmarhabditis sp. and Eumonhystera filiformis were overrepresented in soil-extracted DNA. Read abundances of feeding types significantly differed between the DNA sources and across sites, with a significant effect of biome on both ecto- and endoparasitic herbivores in soil-extracted DNA and for ectoparasitic herbivores only in nematode-sample DNA. Collectively, our data suggest that choice of the DNA source material may lead to different patterns of nematode community composition across space and environmental conditions. Improving the sensitivity of the soil-extracted DNA method by developing protocols using larger amounts of soil and designing nematode-specific primers will make this approach an efficient screening tool to analyse nematode diversity and community structure complementing the labour-intensive isolation of intact nematodes

Despite the general agreement that maximizing carbon storage and its persistence in forest soils are top priorities in the context of climate change mitigation, our knowledge on how to steer soil organic carbon (SOC) through forest management remains limited. For some soils, tree species selection based on litter quality has been shown a powerful measure to boost SOC stocks and stability, whereas on other locations similar efforts result in insignificant or even opposite effects. A better understanding of which mechanisms underpin such context-dependency is needed in order to focus and prioritize management efforts for carbon sequestration. Here we discuss the key role of acid buffering mechanisms in belowground ecosystem functioning and how threshold behavior in soil pH mediates tree species effects on carbon cycling. For most forests around the world, the threshold between the exchange buffer and the aluminum buffer around a pH-H2O of 4.5 is of particular relevance. When a shift between these buffer domains occurs, it triggers changes in multiple compartments in the soil, ultimately altering the way carbon is incorporated and transformed. Moreover, the impact of such a shift can be amplified by feedback loops between tree species, soil biota and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Hence, taking into account non-linearities related to acidity will allow more accurate predictions on the size and direction of the effect of litter quality changes on the way soil organic carbon is stored in forest soils. Consequently, this will allow developing more efficient, context-explicit management strategies to optimize SOC stocks and their stability.
