A Blast loading history can be represented by the peak pressure value and the impulse. Combinations of pressure and impulse of various blast loading scenarios can be collected to draw a pressure-impulse (P-I) curve that corresponds to a level of damage of a blast-resistant structural component. The P-I curve is typically used for a preliminary design or assessment of blast resistance structural components. Generating a P I curve for a given structural component and level of protection requires repeatedly ru nning a single degree of freedom system (SDOF) model, which can be tedious for early design stages. Hence, a simplified approach (i.e., the normalization approach) was utilized to promptly generate the P- I curve for insulated precast concrete wall panels, which relies on shifting a control P I curve using normalization factors. The generated P-I curves using the normalization approach are validated with the traditional SDOF approach curves; 95% of the examined insulted panel configurations have an error between +/-7%. As a result of the reached low error percentages, a spreadsheet- design tool was developed using this approach. The tool can further enable rapid evaluation of the performance of insulated precast concrete panels under blast loading during the preliminary design phase.

A design toolbox has been developed for hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) that employ both batteries and supercapacitors, primarily focusing on optimizing the system sizing/cost and mitigating battery aging. The toolbox incorporates the BaSiS model, a non-empirical physical–electrochemical degradation model for lithium-ion batteries that enables accurate simulations of battery performance and degradation under realistic operating conditions. The paper presents a detailed description of the parameterization, and validation process for the battery model, emphasizing the high accuracy and strong reliability of the battery aging prediction. The HESS design toolbox can be used to investigate the impact of various battery/supercapacitor configurations and energy management algorithms on the design, battery degradation, and system investment cost of the hybrid storage system. To illustrate the effectiveness of the design toolbox, a case study on Dynamic Moderation frequency support in the UK grid was conducted. For this use case, the application of hybrid storage energy systems is well suited due to the highly dynamic power regulation requirements in island grids with low inertia. By utilizing the fast response of supercapacitors, the stress on the battery caused by short-term high-power peaks can be significantly alleviated. In this way, the hybrid storage system effectively reduces either the battery size or the battery aging rate. In summary, this research highlights the crucial role of a comprehensive analysis in the design of hybrid energy storage systems, addressing both battery aging and overall system costs. To aid the construction of pooled gRNA assemblies, we have developed an in silico design workflow for gRNA selection using the gRNA Sequence Region Extraction Tool (gRNA-SeqRET). Built upon the previously developed CCTop, gRNA-SeqRET enables automated, scalable design of gRNA libraries that target user-specified regions or whole genomes of any prokaryote or eukaryote. Additionally, gRNA-SeqRET automates the bulk extraction of any regions of sequence relative to genes or other features, aiding in the design of homology arms for insertion or deletion constructs. We also assess in silico the application of a designed gRNA library to other closely related genomes and demonstrate that for very closely related organisms Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) > 95% a large fraction of the library may be of relevance. AbstractThis work aims to explore the application potential of utilizing the rich medium of olfaction in Immersive Virtual Experiences (IVEs) by engaging a broader range of non-expert users. Considering the inherent properties of scent (e.g., the absence of base odors and storage challenges) and the diverse application demands in IVEs, we introduce OdorCarousel. This design tool encompasses (1) a tiny, lightweight odor-emitting device that integrates with VR headsets and can store 25 distinct aromas. We conducted user-involved technical tests on scent release performance, focusing on identifying odor type, intensity, and transitions. (2) Based on two types of smell interactions in IVEs (active and passive), we devised and implemented three Unreal Engine-based olfactory interaction blueprints and user interfaces facilitating design. A case study illustrates the operation and design process of using OdorCarousel. We recruited 17 participants for a workshop-based user study, successfully executing six concept designs validating the usability and feasibility of OdorCarousel. Finally, we analyzed the design results and the olfactory interaction intentions, discussing the multi-dimensional potential and considerations of smell-enhanced virtual experiences and OdorCarousel, providing design guidance for future works. The article focuses on the development of JourneyBot, a chatbot-driven interactive visualization tool designed for user research in the context of medical clinic visits. JourneyBot aims to overcome geographical barriers, ensure inclusivity for participants during periods of social distancing, and enhance user experience research by capturing and displaying individual treatment journeys on a flexible and interactive platform, providing valuable insights for user experience designers.

This study explores the architectural design tools that have evolved through digital media in the postdigital era, which is evaluated through analog and digital hybridize. It raises the question of how the tool, as a mediator between the designer-subject and the designed-object in the architectural design process, can be re-examined in a hybrid design environment. The study proposes that what connects the designer-subject and the designed-object can be understood not only as a tool but also as a prosthesis. In this context, the “tool” in architectural design is described by the oscillation between the concepts of “becoming-tool” and “becomingprosthesis” and their impact on the designer-subject through bodily, cognitive, and consciousness extensions. The relations among the concepts are discussed by folding them on each other using the hermeneutic methodology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems have many applications with tremendous current and future value to human society. As AI systems penetrate the aspects of everyday life, a pressing need arises to explain their decision-making processes to build trust and familiarity among end users. In high-stakes fields such as healthcare and self-driving cars, AI systems are required to have a minimum standard for accuracy and to provide well-designed explanations for their output, especially when they impact human life. Although many techniques have been developed to make algorithms explainable in human terms, no design methodologies that will allow software teams to systematically draw out and address explainability-related issues during AI design and conception have been established. In response to this gap, we proposed the explainability in design (EID) methodological framework for addressing explainability problems in AI systems. We explored the literature on AI explainability to narrow down the field into six major explainability principles that will aid designers in brainstorming around the metrics and guide the critical thinking process. EID is a step-by-step guide to AI design that has been refined over a series of user studies and interviews with experts in AI explainability. It is devised for software design teams to uncover and resolve potential issues in their AI products and to simply refine and explore the explainability of their products and systems. The EID methodology is a novel framework that aids in the design and conception stages of the AI pipeline and can be integrated into the form of a step-by-step card game. Empirical studies involving AI system designers have shown that EID can decrease the barrier of entry and the time and experience required to effectively make well-informed decisions for integrating explainability into their AI solutions.

Shear stiffness is critical in assessing the stress–strain response of geotechnical infrastructure, and is a complex, nonlinear parameter. Existing methods characterise stiffness degradation as a function of strain and require either bespoke laboratory element tests, or adoption of a curve fitting approach, based on an existing data set of laboratory element tests. If practitioners lack the required soil classification parameters, they are unable to use these curve fitting functions. Within this study, we examine the ability and versatility of an artificial neural network (ANN), in this case a feedforward multilayer perceptron, to predict strain-based stiffness degradation on the data set of element test results and soil classification data that underpins current curve fitting functions. It is shown that the ANN gives similar or better results to the existing curve fitting method when the same parameters are used, but also that the ANN approach enables curves to be recovered with 'any' subset of the considered soil classification parameters, providing practitioners with a great versatility to derive a stiffness degradation curve. The objective of this work is to support co-creation of novel ideas in biodesign during fast-paced and facilitated workshops. We created a card-based tool which simultaneously provides knowledge on both 'science' and 'context'. The tool was used to trigger and inspire collaborative ideation in two biodesign workshops in which participants from scientific and design backgrounds produced ideas for healthcare-related innovations. To understand the perception of the tool and the mechanism of scientific knowledge integration in ideation, we conducted post-workshop interviews with 10 participants. Our qualitative analysis shows that the exposure to contextualised scientific knowledge provided by the tool enabled participants to generate ideas that cover a wide spectrum from the micro-scale of bioscience to the macro-scale of socio-political contexts, and thus supported the acceleration of ideation in biodesign workshops. Gestural interaction with freehands and while grasping an everyday object enables always-available input. To sense such gestures, minimal instrumentation of the user’s hand is desirable. However, the choice of an effective but minimal IMU layout remains challenging, due to the complexity of the multi-factorial space that comprises diverse finger gestures, objects, and grasps. We present SparseIMU, a rapid method for selecting minimal inertial sensor-based layouts for effective gesture recognition. Furthermore, we contribute a computational tool to guide designers with optimal sensor placement. Our approach builds on an extensive microgestures dataset that we collected with a dense network of 17 inertial measurement units (IMUs). We performed a series of analyses, including an evaluation of the entire combinatorial space for freehand and grasping microgestures (393 K layouts), and quantified the performance across different layout choices, revealing new gesture detection opportunities with IMUs. The transition toward a circular economy (CE) is key in decarbonizing the built environment. Despite this, knowledge of—and engagement with—CE philosophies remains limited within the construction industry. Discussion with practitioners reveals this to be contributed to by a lack of clarity regarding CE principles, with numerous organizations recommending implementation of differing and sometimes conflicting principles. In addition, a systematic assessment of how building designs consider CE is made difficult by the multiple design areas required to be considered and the large amount of design data required to do so. The absence of a systematic CE assessment causes a lack of comparability across designs, preventing benchmarking of CE practices in building design at present. This paper details the development of Regenerate, a CE engagement tool for the assessment of new and existing buildings, established in an effort to overcome the aforementioned barriers to the adoption of CE within the construction sector. A CE design workflow for the built environment is proposed, comprising four overarching circularity principles (Design for Adaptability; Design for Deconstructability; Circular Material Selection; Resource Efficiency) and contributing design actions. In addition to engaging stakeholders by enabling the assessment of building designs, the tool retrieves key data for further research. Information on completed design actions as well as recycling and waste metrics is collected to facilitate future CE benchmarking. In early-stage vehicle design, there is a significant lack of knowledge about the impact of design requirements on the design of subsystems, the resulting knock-on effects between subsystems and the vehicle's overall performance. This leads to a sub-optimal vehicle design with increased design iterations. To mitigate this lack of knowledge, a cross-scalar design tool consisting of an induction motor model is presented in this paper. The tool calculates the motor's attributes, namely its volume, mass, and the performance it can deliver to satisfy a given drive cycle's requirements. This is achieved by breaking down the drive cycle requirements into motor parameters from which the various power losses are derived. These key losses are then utilised to develop the torque/speed curve. Furthermore, it is proposed that the motor's attributes can be used to design other subsystems and consequently analyse their interaction effects. For example, the motor's attributes can be used to design regenerative brakes and consequently analyse their infuence on brake wear, lifetime, and energy savings. Thus, the design tool enables the design of efcient vehicles with minimised design iterations by analysing the infuence of design requirements on the subsystem's design and the consequent interaction effects among the subsystems and on the vehicle's overall performance. Conventional CAD modelling software demands substantial utilisation of input modalities like the keyboard and mouse for creating 3-dimensional (3D) models. The dexterity measures involved in controlling input modalities could pose challenges to users with motor disabilities—including the inability to move their limbs, particularly their upper and lower arms, and fingers, due to traumatic damage or congenital problems. In order to meet these challenges, this paper proposes a virtual reality (VR)-based medium to help users with motor disabilities build simple 3D models for architectural design. The concept of operating buttons using head-gaze in the VR environment has been utilised to perform scaling—a 3D object manipulation method—to create simplified building models. Moreover, navigation in the VR space using tilting of the head has been employed with the user seated on a revolving chair, thus eliminating the need for any limbic movement. Unity game engine was used to develop two variations of the VR model with a different button layout for creating simple cuboidal volumes mimicking buildings in the virtual environment. Both variations have been tested with 32 individuals against a specific performance indicator (i.e., task completion time) and self-reported metrics, such as the perception of effort applied and degree of visual clutter, followed by retrospective participant feedback sessions. One of the VR application's variants (i.e., variant 1) produced promising results regarding overall usability and effort demand. This paper also proposes a methodological framework for an AI-based, intelligent, and adaptive VR application interface that caters to the user's abilities and pain points in real-time. In the future, this framework could be instrumental in creating a comprehensive gaze-based VR tool for 3D modelling having multiple functions to help users with motor disabilities. Radiant cooling and heating systems provide an opportunity to achieve significant energy savings, peak demand reduction, load shifting, and thermal comfort improvements compared to conventional all-air systems. As a result, application of these systems has increased in recent years, particularly in zero-net-energy (ZNE) and other advanced low-energy buildings. Despite this growth, completed installations to date have demonstrated that controls and operation of radiant systems can be challenging due to a lack of familiarity within the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) design and operations professions, often involving new concepts (particularly related to the slow response in high thermal mass radiant systems). To achieve the significant reductions in building energy use proposed by California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC’s) Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan that all new non-residential buildings be ZNE by 2030, it is critical that new technologies that will play a major role in reaching this goal be applied in an effective manner. This final report describes the results of a comprehensive multi-faceted research project that was undertaken to address these needed enhancements to radiant technology by developing the following: (1) sizing and operation tools (currently unavailable on the market) to provide reliable methods to take full advantage of the radiant systems to provide improved energy performance while maintaining comfortable conditions, (2) energy, cost, and occupant comfort data to provide real world examples of energy efficient, affordable, and comfortable buildings using radiant systems, and (3) Title-24 and ASHRAE Standards advancements to enhance the building industry’s ability to achieve significant energy efficiency goals in California with radiant systems. The research team used a combination of full-scale fundamental laboratory experiments, whole-building energy simulations and simplified tool development, and detailed field studies and control demonstrations to assemble the new information, guidance and tools necessary to help the building industry achieve significant energy efficiency goals for radiant systems in California.

Microneedle design for biomedical applications, such as transdermal drug delivery, vaccination and transdermal biosensing, has lately become a rapidly growing research field. In this sense, finite element analysis has been extendedly used by microneedle designers to determine the most suitable structural parameters for their prototypes, and also to predict their mechanical response and efficiency during the insertion process. Although many proposals include computer-aided tools to build geometrical models for mechanical analysis, there is a lack of software utilities intended to automate the design process encompassing geometrical modeling, simulation setup and postprocessing of results. This work proposes a novel MATLAB-based design tool for microneedle arrays that permits personalized selection of the basic characteristics of a mechanical model. The tool automatically exports the selected options to an ANSYS batch file, including instructions to run a static and a linear buckling analysis. Later, the subsequent simulation results can be retrieved for on-screen display and potential postprocessing. In addition, this work reviews recent proposals (2018–2022) about finite element model characterization of microneedles to establish the minimum set of features that any tool intended for automating a design process should provide. Shading pedestrian paths is strategically important to ensure accessibility and comfort for pedestrians in cities. Limited applicability in practice of previous research about the effectiveness of natural and artificial shading devices was found. This paper proposes a workflow to design effective installations of shading devices on sidewalks; it relies on a design tool developed prioritising compatibility with other software/processes for its application to urban design. The methodology was tested on the city of Milan; the performance of 60 % linear path in shade was set as the design goal. Based on solar radiation exposure of urban canyons, a time of the day was associated with each simulated summer scenario. A library of shading devices was compiled allowing designers to test various proposals. The workflow was applied at first to theoretical urban canyons, then to a real case study sidewalk. Results included a catalogue of solutions with installation guidelines, a table to estimate the recommended number of shading devices for each sidewalk location, and the opportunity to iteratively test master planning proposals. Four applications of the workflow were proposed in response to resources availability and increasing outcome suitability. The workflow would support urban designers in implementing solar radiation exposure analysis in their practice. New materials and technologies facilitate the design of thermochromic dynamic paintings. However, creating a thermochromic painting requires knowledge of electrical engineering and computer science, which is a barrier for artists and enthusiasts with non-technology backgrounds. Existing toolkits only support limited design space and fail to provide usable solutions for independent creation and for meeting the needs of the artists. We present ViviPaint, a toolkit that assists artists and enthusiasts in creating thermochromic paintings easily and conveniently. We summarized the pain points and challenges by observing a professional artist's entire thermochromic painting creation process. We then designed ViviPaint consisting of a design tool and a set of hardware components. The design tool provides a GUI animation choreography interface, hardware assembly guidance, and assistance in assembly process. The hardware components comprise an augmented picture frame with a detachable structure and 24 temperature-changing units using Peltier elements. The results of our evaluation study (N = 8) indicate that our toolkit is easy to use and effectively assists users in creating thermochromic paintings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Observations made in architecture and engineering practices have highlighted the need to access buildings embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at early stages as well as a general understanding of the impacts of design decisions. This research addresses this need, and lack of readily available methods by leveraging knowledge from existing building's databases, and using contextual and descriptive data, such as structure typology and location, to quantify the total embodied GHG emissions. It uses machine learning to develop a methodology for early and hands-on approximation of embodied GHG emissions, allowing to compare buildings, explain feature impacts, and verify computed results. The methodology, tested on the Embodied Carbon of European Buildings database, is generic and can be trained on other building databases and provide predictions tailored to their content. Alongside direct applications for design and decision-making, it provides a systematic analysis of features and emission standards, which, applied to a national database, could help inform policy models and mitigation strategies and transition towards a low emission and sustainable built environment. The research studies how innovation capability can be nurtured within community of artisans through design tool development. Innovation capability has generated widespread interest both academically and practically. However previous works have mostly been performed at profit organizations with few discussed at community level, especially in artisans' community who are struggling to create innovative product and have lost their competitiveness in the market. The research focusing on a unique case, Rancabuaya Village, Tangerang, Indonesia. The research used qualitative exploratory study design with single case study. Data collection methods used in the study were in-depth interviews, literature study and documentation. Innovation capability is key for long term sustainability and need to be nurtured in community sectors. To accelerate the innovation capability building process in informal setting, the study proposes a design tool to facilitate idea generation for new product development in community of artisans. The design tool is developed with design thinking process: empathize, define, ideation, prototyping and testing. The design tools as the study result are the bamboo and rattan idea book, a book consisting of a mood board and a compilation of different weaving patterns from each component of a weaving object. The book aims to foster the idea management and creativity within a community of artisans, two determinants that are found to be essential for building innovation capability. This research contributes on two main ways: first, it provides an understanding that nurturing innovation capability in community artisans setting necessitates strategic management initiatives such as: a product development strategy, an idea sharing system, and a collaborative culture, this has not been profoundly explored by the present literature; and second, it employs design thinking as an analytical framework that provides a human-centered approach to the process of building innovation capability and ensures that the tool developed is rooted in the needs of the artisan community. The paper proposes a new tool for evaluation of the degree of visual contact with the outdoor greenery, the Greenery-View factor (GV), intended to be easy to grasp and simple to use. It starts with the construction of a No-greenery line (similar to the No-sky line) on the vertical section of the building with the neighbouring greenery included. No-greenery line divides the space into a part with the view to the greenery and the rest of the room from which the greenery is not visible. To find out the part of the floor area of the room from which the greenery can be seen, the section-point between the no-greenery line and the line representing the eye-level is projected down at the floor plan. The GV factor stands for the part of the floor area with the view to the greenery expressed as a percentage of the whole floor area of the room. The No-sky line and the No-greenery line can be used together by architects and urban planners as extremely simple and powerful couple of graphical tools. The paper discusses also how the GV factor could be implemented in the new European daylight standard EN-17037 Daylight in buildings (2018).
