19. Late Cretaceous marine biodiversity dynamics in the Eastern Caucasus, northern Neo-Tethys ocean: Regional imprints of global events

Abstract

During the Late Cretaceous, marine organisms experienced significant changes in their biodiversity. These diversity changes were influenced, particularly, by the Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 near the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary (93.6 Ma). Here, stratigraphic ranges of 80 marine macroinvertebrate genera (cephalopods, brachiopods, gastropods, corals, and echinoids) were employed to assess the Late Cretaceous biodiversity dynamics in the Eastern Caucasus, which covered a large region located in the northern Neo-Tethys Ocean. Our results outline three prominent diversity minima, which occurred in the late Cenomanian-late Turonian, the early Santonian-late Campanian, and the late Maastrichtian. Probably, the latter two were just local. Despite of some differences in trends between the regional and global marine biodiversity dynamics, the late Cenomanian-late Turonian biotic crisis appeared both on the regional and global scales and was probably a long-term consequence of the Oceanic Anoxic Event 2. Oxygen depletion and eustaticallydriven shoreline shifts are considered as plausible causes of the observed biodiversity dynamics.

Abstract

International audience; To overcome the lack of long-term instrumental records, paleo-reconstructions using geochemical signatures preserved in the carbonate shells of foraminifera, provide a unique opportunity to reconstruct changes in seawater environmental parameters over time and evaluate the validity of climate change scenarios. High resolution paleoceanographic studies can provide new insights about Paleoclimatic perturbations allowing better prediction of biotic responses to modern warming and acidification. In this study, we will present calibrations using modern foraminifera sampled from surface seawater of the Atlantic Ocean, where all environmental parameters were recorded. Mg and Sr concentrations were determined using LA-ICP-MS, while the oxygen isotope composition of the same tests as used for the elemental analyses was subsequently measured by IRMS. Our results show that combining Mg and Sr data to compute temperature improve temperature reconstruction most probably by accounting for the impact of salinity and/or carbonate chemistry.To further test this hypothesis a new set of temperature data covering the Paleogene was extracted from δ18O, porosity, and combined Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca data, measured on Subbotina linaperta, from three localities: South and North Atlantic, and North Pacific. This foraminifera multi-proxies approach allowed to determine a continuous Paleogene sub-surface temperature. For the first time, the results of the three proxies are consistent with each other and highlight the existence of a latitudinal gradient over the Paleogene, punctuated by short term variations. Hence, we emphasize here: 1) the combined use of Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca concentrations within temperature equation reconstruction to strengthen paleoenvironmental reconstructions on geological timescales, and 2) the utility of porosity as a complementary ecological proxy, to either discard or complement geochemical data.

Abstract

Careful preparation released an ammonite specimen from a block of highly indurated sandy limestone from the oyster bed of the Wanderfeld IV occurrence in Namibia. This find is important because Wanderfeld IV is one of two known marine onshore Cretaceous deposits on the west coast of Africa south of Angola. Although ammonites often permit precise dating of the beds in which they occur, the specimens from Wanderfeld IV are placenticeratids, most of which have low stratigraphic value because of the slow evolutionary changes that lineages in this family underwent and the provincialism that it shows. This is rather unusual among ammonites and thus, based solely on its ammonite record, the Wanderfeld IV site cannot be dated more precisely than probably Cenomanian to Coniacian. However, the accompanying bivalve fauna consists of rare Protocardia umkwelanensis and abundant Rhynchostreon suborbiculatum, which gives its name to the oyster shell bed. Based on the bivalves, the Wanderfeld IV occurrence is likely to be Cenomanian. Rare microfossils from the same blocks of rock as the macrofossils did not yield precise stratigraphic information. The Wanderfeld IV deposit is a bioclastic sandy limestone, representing a fully-marine, near-shore, high energy depositional environment as indicated by the presence of immature angular quartz grains in it. International audience; The use of 3D imaging techniques is nowadays widespread in palaeontological researchand oers new opportunities to prepare demonstrative gures for publication, and tools toanimate images for communication. Although the value of 3D technologies is fully demon-strated in research, it remains poorly explored for teaching biology, geology and palaeontologyin the University undergraduate programs.We developed the project ATLAS 3D (Sorbonne Universite, FormInnov project): an in-teractive pdf of 3D objects commonly studied when teaching Natural Sciences includingpalaeontology. The transfer of research expertise to education is expected to improve theway students can learn and increase their skills. Examples of objects already available inATLAS 3D include microfossils (foraminifers), cephalopods, cnidarian, brachiopods. ATLAS3D can be used with an open access software (Adobe Acrobat Reader), allowing the user tonavigate through the object using slicing tools. The anatomical structures can be selectedand therefore viewed independently, allowing for example to highlight dierences betweenthe external skeleton/shell and internal cavities or structures. Pre-selected views can also berecorded by the teacher in order to label or comment anatomical features.At the hinge of recent research in palaeontology and museography, this tool is designed toincrease the autonomy of the students and ease the understanding of anatomy.

International audience; External test characters of Upper Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera are commonly com-pared to those of extant species. Similarities are used to interpret their life position: globu-lar pustulose forms (Whiteinella and Muricohedbergella) are supposed to have inhabited theupper part of the water column, whereas heavier keeled species (Rotalipora and Thalmanin-nella) would have evolved below the thermocline. However, this model cannot be applied toall time intervals. Indeed, during, Paleogene forms with a well-developed keel (Morozovel-lids) were common in the upper part of the water column.With the development of non-destructive X-Ray tomography, it is now possible to qualita-tively and quantitatively characterize all the ontogenetic stages of the planktonic foraminifera.Indeed, morphological test changes and internal volumes can be precisely constrained for eachchamber. CT techniques were therefore used to study, for the rst time, the growth patternsof three well-preserved Cenomanian species (Whiteinella aprica, Rotalipora cushmani andThalmaninnella greenhornensis) from the Greenhorn Formation of the Great Plains (SouthDakota, US). The ontogenetic succession of their chambers has been compared to those ofrecent fossil species (Miocene up to Holocene) still inhabiting oceans. Surprisingly, the re-sults would show that the globular W. aprica and the keeled R. cushmani have the samegrowth pattern which is similar to the thermocline dweller Globorotalia menardii. Th. green-hornensis growth pattern is clearly dierent and belongs to the deep dwellers group.Those results are important as they will allow a better understanding of the extinction steepsof rotaliporids (Rotalipora and Thalmaninnella) during the onset of the Oceanic Anoxic Event2.

International audience; The development of the stratigraphy during the 19th century has known a deciding innovation in 1842 when Alcide d’Orbignyintroduced the geological stage notion. The geological stages aredefined in a precise geographical area which shows a typesection,the stratotype, allowing the identification of the geological unit.Since then, the stratotype notion has been greatly modified. In addi-tion to the stratotypes of geological units, stratotypes of geologicalboundaries have been defined, allowing to precisely characterizethe base of the geological stages. The progress of science has alsodemonstrated the imperfections of historical stratotypes. Howe-ver, they always constitute concrete and international patrimonialreferences.; Le développement de la stratigraphie au xixesiècle connaît une innovation décisive en 1842 lorsqu’Alcide d’Orbigny intro-duit la notion d’étage géologique. Les étages sont définis dans unecertaine zone géographique qui montre une coupe type, ou stra-totype, permettant l’identification de l’unité géologique. Depuiscette période, la notion de stratotype s’est considérablement modi-fiée. En complément des stratotypes d’unité ont notamment étéintroduits des stratotypes de limites permettant de définir plusprécisément la base des étages géologiques. La recherche a égale-ment mis en évidence l’aspect nécessairement imparfait desstratotypes historiques. Ils constituent néanmoins toujours desréférences patrimoniales concrètes de valeur internationale.

Abstract

International audience; The Cenomanian stage of the geological time scale was named for Cenomanum, the Latin name ofLe Mans (Sarthe, France). D’Orbigny (1847) has chosen the locality of Le Mans as a type area forits outstanding richness in marine fossils, especially molluscs, bryozoans, brachiopods andechinoderms. The Gueranger collection, at the Musée Vert (Le Mans) houses a unique echinodermfauna, including many taxa unknown elsewhere. Preservation is exceptional with the occurrence ofechinoids with still-attached spines (Tetragramma roissyi), starfish body fossils with plates, spines,and granules, still looking as in living conditions (Cenomanaster cenomanensis, Tethyasterguerangeri, Alkaidia sp.), two forms of ophiuroids (Ophiotitanos sp., an unpublished taxon) andCrinoids (“Isocrinus” cenomanensis) known from articulated bodies. All specimens were found inthe so-called “lentilles à Echinodermes” of the “Sables du Mans” Formation. The sedimentarymatrix usually combines clay and sand. Juignet (1974) recognized shallow marine conditions for theformation, with evidence of tidal currents. Individuals were buried rapidly and coated with claysbrought by River floods, which favoured the preservation. The contrasted ecologies of theassociated taxa suggest some mixing of individuals from distinct, not necessarily distant,environments, and the transport of bodies by coastal and/or storms currents. Similar preservationconditions are reported in the literature for other uncommon fossil sites that sample uncommonechinoderm faunas.The Cenomanian is a critical time for understanding of Asteroida and Ophiuroida. Their fossilrecord remains sparsely and unevenly distributed in time and space during the Early Cretaceous. Ahigh diversity emerged in the Cenomanian of Europe at the dawn of Chalk age. The varied faunadescribed in the Chalk of Anglo-Paris basin, the North Aquitaine margin, German-Polish basin, andthe Elbe valley, all show a high endemicity. The European fauna homogenize later with extensionof the chalk and migration of lineages.

Abstract

During the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary interval, over 2Ma, five altered volcanic-ash beds, which are isochronous time-line, have been correlated over tens of thousands of square kilometres through the US Western Interior Basin from Arizona to Kansas and from Texas up to South Dakota while passing by the Pueblo type section (Colorado). These instantaneous events constitute independent chronostratigraphic marker-beds enabling the robustness of lithologica, biological (planktic and benthic foraminefera, calcareous nannofossils) or geochemical (S13C, S18C) records to be tested as tool for high resolution correlations. As suggested by our scheme, differences obseved between supposed continuous sections could be related, with some hiatuses in the sedimentary record. If correct, one hiatus may have been as long as 800 Kyrs. The onset and most of the fine-scale features of carbon-isotope excursion identified at pueblo are recognised over long distances even in the more coastal sections where bed by bed correlations become more difficult. Thus, this tool appears extremely robust if the hiatuses are precisely constrained. Some bioevents as the benthic zone or the Heterohelix event are synchronous at the scale of the Western Interior Basin and they could be used as global stratigraphic tools; they also coincide with events recorded by S13Ccarb (respectively phase of oxygenation and second rise of the anoxia). On the basis of this high resolution scheme, we show that the filament event, the last occurences of R. cushmani as well as the first occurence of H. helvetica are strongly diachronous at the basin scale. Thus the W. archaeocretacea Partial Range Zone, in which is the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary, has a variable duration. If it is reduced at almost nothing at Pueblo (
