We have extracted the nuclear level density of ${}^{128}$Te from a $(\mathrm{p},\mathrm{p} '\gamma)$ scattering experiment using the large-volume \labr\ and \cebr\ detectors from ELI-NP at the 9~MV Tandem facilities at IFIN-HH. The decay data were normalised using photonuclear data, resulting in nuclear level densities without intrinsic model dependencies from the constant temperature or Fermi gas models. The measured nuclear level density follows closely between the expectations from these two models, but we observe a clear divergence from a microscopic model based on the Skyrme force., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Memristors that mimic brain functions are crucial for energy-efficient neuromorphic devices. Ion channels that emulate biological synapses are still in the early stages of development, especially the tunability of memory states. Here, we demonstrate that cations such as K+, Na+, Ca2+, and Al3+ intercalated in the interlayer spaces of vermiculite, result in highly confined channels of size 3-5 {\AA}. They host exotic memristor properties through ion exchange dynamics, even at high salt concentrations of 1 M. The bipolar memristor characteristics observed are tunable with frequency, geometric asymmetry, ion concentration, and intercalants. Notably, we observe polarization-flipping memristor behavior in two cases: one with Al3+ ions and another with devices having a geometric asymmetry ratio greater than 15. This inversion is attributed to the over-screening of counter-ions due to their accumulation at the channel entrance. Our results suggest that ion exchange dynamics, ion-ion interactions, and ion accumulation/depletion mechanisms, particularly with multivalent ions, can be harnessed to develop advanced memristor devices., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures

This paper presents a novel approach to constrain the $\mu$- and y- distortions in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) using the COBE/FIRAS data. The analysis draws from the concept of blackbody radiation inversion (BRI), a mathematical technique typically used to determine the temperature distribution from a radiated power spectrum. We study the deviations from the ideal blackbody spectrum or the spectral distortions by incorporating first a non-zero chemical potential $\mu$ via the Bose-Einstein distribution and then the Compton parameter $y$ while keeping the monopole temperature constant. We infer the results as probability distribution functions on these distortions. Finally, we derive $\mu = (8.913 \pm 0.736) \times 10^{-5}$ and $y = (1.532 \pm 0.092) \times 10^{-5}$ at a $68\%$ confidence interval. The results are consistent with prior values and provide tighter constraints on the CMB spectral distortion and synergies of the primordial Universe., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, comments welcome

Here, we report on the measurements of the $\gamma$-ray strength functions and nuclear level densities of ${}^{112,114}$Sn performed for the first time at the 9~MV Tandem accelerator facilities at IFIN-HH using the Oslo method. We extract thermodynamic properties and gross and fine properties of the pygmy dipole resonance for systematic comparison in the chain of Sn isotopes. The results are compared with microscopic models implemented in the TALYS reaction code and the fully microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model for the underlying nuclear structure of the dipole strength in ${}^{112,114}$Sn. The quasiparticle-phonon model results show the importance of complex configurations to the low-energy dipole response in the pygmy dipole resonance energy region. The experimental data are further included in the cross-section and reaction rate calculations for the $(\mathrm{n},\gamma)$ reaction of the $p$-process nuclei ${}^{112,114}$Sn showing a significant increase in reaction rates at high temperatures compared to existing nuclear databases., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures

Gaia BH3 is the first observed dormant black hole (BH) with a mass of $\approx{30}$ M$_\odot$ and represents the first confirmation that such massive BHs are associated with metal-poor stars. Here, we explore the isolated binary formation channel for Gaia BH3 focusing on the old and metal-poor stellar population of the Milky Way halo. We use the MIST stellar models and our open-source population synthesis code SEVN to evolve $5.6 \times 10^8$ binaries exploring 20 sets of parameters. We find that systems like Gaia BH3 form preferentially from binaries initially composed of a massive star ($40-60$ M$_\odot$) and a low mass companion ($<1$ M$_\odot$) in a wide ($P>10^3$ days) and eccentric orbit ($e>0.6$). Such progenitor binary stars do not undergo any Roche-lobe overflow episode during their entire evolution, so that the final orbital properties of the BH-star system are determined at the core collapse of the primary star. Low natal kicks ($\lesssim$ 10~km/s) significantly favour the formation of Gaia BH3-like systems, but high velocity kicks up to $\approx 220$ km/s are also allowed. We estimate the formation efficiency for Gaia BH3-like systems in old ($t>10$ Gyr) and metal-poor ($Z<0.01$) populations to be $\sim 4 \times 10^{-8}$ M$_\odot^{-1}$ (for our fiducial model), representing $\sim 3\%$ of the whole simulated BH-star population. We expect up to $\approx 4000$ BH-star systems in the Galactic halo formed through isolated evolution, of which $\approx 100$ are compatible with Gaia BH3-like. Given the density profile of the Galactic halo we do not expect more than one at the observed distance of Gaia BH3. Our models show that, even if it was born inside a stellar cluster, Gaia BH3 is compatible with a primordial binary star that escaped from its parent cluster without experiencing significant dynamical interactions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Building LLMs for languages other than English is in great demand due to the unavailability and performance of multilingual LLMs, such as understanding the local context. The problem is critical for low-resource languages due to the need for instruction sets. In a multilingual country like India, there is a need for LLMs supporting Indic languages to provide generative AI and LLM-based technologies and services to its citizens. This paper presents our approach of i) generating a large Odia instruction set, including domain knowledge data suitable for LLM fine-tuning, and ii) building a Llama2-finetuned model tailored for enhanced performance in the Odia domain. The proposed work will help researchers build an instruction set and LLM, particularly for Indic languages. We will release the model and instruction set for the public for research and noncommercial purposes.

In the osmotic power generation field, reaching the industrial benchmark has been challenging because of the need for capillaries close to the sizes of ions and molecules. Here, we fabricated well-controlled 'along-the-capillary' membranes of Na-vermiculite with a capillary size of ~5 Angstrom. They exhibit 1600 times enhanced conductivity compared to commonly studied 'across-the-capillary' membranes. Interestingly, they show a very high cation selectivity of 0.83 for NaCl solutions, which resulted in large power densities of 9.6 W.m^-2 and 12.2 W.m^-2 at concentration gradients of 50 and 1000, respectively, at 296 K, for an unusually large membrane length of 100 micron. The power density shows an exponential increase with temperature, reaching 65.1 W.m-2 for a concentration gradient of 50 at 333 K. This markedly differs from the classical behavior and indicates the role of ion (de)hydration in enhancing power density, opening new possibilities for exploiting such membranes for energy harvesting applications., Comment: 34 pages, 4 main figures

Fluidic channels with physical dimensions approaching molecular sizes are crucial for novel desalination, chemical separation, and sensing technologies. However, fabrication of precisely controlled fluidic channels in the angstrom size is extremely challenging. This, along with our limited understanding of nanofluidic transport, hinders practical applications. Here, we fabricated high-quality salt-intercalated vermiculite membranes with channel sizes 3-5 Angstrom, highly dependent on intercalant. Unlike pristine samples, the salt-intercalated membranes are highly stable in water. We tested several such membranes, of which 0.6 micron thick membranes showed dye rejection efficiencies greater than 98 percent with exceptionally high water permeance of 5400 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 at a differential pressure of 0.9 bar. Interestingly, the same membrane also rejected NaCl ions, with efficiencies of 95 percent. Our highly confined channels exhibit sub-linear ionic conductance related to hydration sizes, steric exclusion, K+ mobility enhancement, and conductance saturation at concentrations less than or equal to 10 mM. Liquid-phase exfoliation of two-dimensional materials is very attractive for large-scale applications. Although used extensively, isolating MoS2 layers (<10) with high efficiency is reported to be extremely difficult. Further, the importance of soaking has not yet been studied, and the surfactants' role in stabilizing MoS2 nanosheets is poorly understood1. Herein, we report a novel approach to exfoliating large quantities of MoS2 via high-pressure (HP) liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) in deionized (DI) water. 4 to 7 layers of MoS2 nanosheets were obtained from 60 days-soaked samples and they were found to be stable in solvents for periods of up to six months. Studies on the effect of three surfactants, namely sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS), sodium cholate (SC), and tetra-butyl ammonium bromide (TBAB), indicate that exfoliation of MoS2 nanosheets in SDBS is highly efficient than the other two surfactants. The estimated yield reaches up to 7.25%, with a nanosheet concentration of 1.45 mg/ml, which is one of the highest ever reported. Our studies also suggest that the nanosheets' concentration and the lateral size depend on exfoliation cycles, applied pressure and surfactant concentration. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and ion-transport study show that the nanosheets prepared by our method are stable in an acidic medium and free from surfactants. A high hydrogen evolution rate of 30.13 mmol g-1 h-1 was estimated under ambient laboratory conditions., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures
