Search

Intercalation of magnetic atoms into the van der Waals gaps of layered transition metal dichalcogenides offers an excellent platform to produce exotic physical properties. Here, we report a detailed study of magnetic and electrical transport properties of Co$_{0.28}$TaS$_2$. The temperature dependent resistivity measurements display anomalous upturn below 11 K, which persists in presence of magnetic field even up to 14 T. In the low temperature region, the resistivity upturn exhibits a unique $T^{1/2}$ scaling behavior, which remains unchanged when an external magnetic field is applied. The $T^{1/2}$ dependence of resistivity upturn is the hallmark of non-Fermi liquid state in orbital two-channel Kondo effect(2CK). This anomalous resistivity upturn in Co$_{0.28}$TaS$_2$ can be attributed to the orbital two-channel Kondo mechanism., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report the anisotropic magnetic properties of the ternary compound ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$. Single crystals of this compound were grown by high temperature solution growth technique,using Al:Ge eutectic composition as flux. From the powder x-ray diffraction we confirmed that ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the trigonal CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type crystal structure. The anisotropic magnetic properties of a single crystal were investigated by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity. A bulk magnetic ordering occurs around 4 K inferred from the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity. The magnetization measured along the $ab$-plane increases more rapidly than along the $c$-axis suggesting the basal $ab$-plane as the easy plane of magnetization. The magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the $4f$-derived part of the heat capacity in the paramagnetic regime analysed based on the point charge model of the crystalline electric field (CEF) indicate a relatively low CEF energy level splitting., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Polycrystalline samples of Ce(Cu$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$Ge$_2$ were investigated by means of electrical resistivity $\rho$($T$), magnetic susceptibility $\chi$($T$), specific heat $C$$_p$($T$) and thermo electric power $S$($T$) measurements. The long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, which set in at $T$$_N$ = 4.1 K in CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$, is suppressed by non-iso-electronic cobalt (Co) doping at a critical value of the concentration $x$$_c$ = 0.6, accompanied by non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior inferred from the power law dependence of heat capacity and susceptibility i.e. $C$($T$)/$T$ and $\chi$($T$) $\propto$ $T$$^{-1+\lambda}$ down to 0.4 K, along with a clear deviation from $T$$^2$ behavior of the electrical resistivity. The trigonal structure of EuMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is an anomaly in the tetragonal 122-type pnictide family. We report detailed investigation of the underlying magnetic correlations in single crystal EuMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ using high resolution elastic neutron scattering measurements. The system undergoes through two successive antiferromagnetic transitions at $T$ = 135 K and 14.4 K, respectively. Numerical modeling of the experimental data reveals the long range antiferromagnetic correlation of Mn-ions in the $a-b$ plane below $T_N1$ = 135 K. Mn spins are aligned closer to the diagonal axis of the unit cell. The lower temperature transition, below $T_N2$ = 14.4 K, is found to arise due to the long range antiferromagnetic correlation of Eu spins that are rotated by $\theta$ = 55 degree from the $c$-axis of the unit cell., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report on the single crystal growth and anisotropic physical properties of CeAgAs$_2$. The compound crystallizes as on ordered variant of the HfCuSi$_2$-type crystal structure and adopts the orthorhombic space group $Pmca$~(\#57) with two symmetry inequivalent cerium atomic positions in the unit cell. The orthorhombic crystal structure of our single crystal was confirmed from the powder x-ray diffraction and from electron diffraction patterns obtained from the transmission electron microscope. The anisotropic physical properties have been investigated on a good quality single crystal by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical transport and heat capacity. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements revealed that this compound orders antiferromagnetically with two closely spaced magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1} = 6$~K and $T_{\rm N2} = 4.9$~K. Magnetization studies have revealed a large magnetocrystalline anisotropy due to the crystalline electric field (CEF) with an easy axis of magnetization along the [010] direction. The magnetic susceptibility measured along the [001] direction exhibited a broad hump in the temperature range 50 to 250~K, while typical Curie-Weiss behaviour was observed along the other two orthogonal directions. The electrical resistivity and the heat capacity measurements revealed that CeAgAs$_2$ is a Kondo lattice system with a magnetic ground state.

The magnetoresistance is the magnetic field induced change of electrical resistivity of a material. Recent studies have revealed extremely large magnetoresistance in several non-magnetic semimetals, which has been explained on the basis of either electron-hole compensation or the Fermi surface topology, or the combination of both. Here, we present a single crystal study on MoSi$_2$, which exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance, approaching almost 10$^7$ % at 2 K and 14 T magnetic field. It is found that the electron-hole compensation level in MoSi$_2$ evolves with magnetic field, which is resulted from strong Zeeman effect, and found beneficial in boosting the large non-saturating magnetoresistance. The non-trivial Berry phase in the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations and the moderate suppression of backward scattering of the charge carriers lend support for the topological nature of this semimetal. The ultra-large carrier mobility of the topologically protected charge carriers reinforces the magnetoresistance of MoSi2 to an unprecedented large value., Comment: 16 pages, 5 Figures and one Table

Pseudogap phase in superconductors continues to be an outstanding puzzle that differentiates unconventional superconductors from the conventional ones (BCS-superconductors). Employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy on a highly dense conventional superconductor, MgB2, we discover an interesting scenario. While the spectral evolution close to the Fermi energy is commensurate to BCS descriptions as expected, the spectra in the wider energy range reveal emergence of a pseudogap much above the superconducting transition temperature indicating apparent departure from the BCS scenario. The energy scale of the pseudogap is comparable to the energy of E2g phonon mode responsible for superconductivity in MgB2 and the pseudogap can be attributed to the effect of electron-phonon coupling on the electronic structure. These results reveal a scenario of the emergence of the superconducting gap within an electron-phonon coupling induced pseudogap., Comment: 4 figures

The magnetocrystalline anisotropy exhibited in PrPd$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal has been investigated by measuring the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity. PrPd$_2$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the well known ThCr$_2$Si$_2$\--type tetragonal structure. The antiferromagnetic ordering is confirmed as 5.1~K with the [001]-axis as the easy axis of magnetization. A superzone gap formation is observed from the electrical resistivity measurement when the current is passed along the [001] direction. The crystal electric field (CEF) analysis on the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the heat capacity measurements confirms a doublet ground state with a relatively low over all CEF level splitting. The CEF level spacings and the Zeeman splitting at high fields become comparable and lead to metamagnetic transition at 34~T due to the CEF level crossing.

Single crystals of the new compound CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 have been grown by high-temperature solution growth method using a eutectic Al-Si mixture as flux. This compound is derived from the binary CeSi2 (tetragonal ThSi2-type, Pearson symbol tI12, space group I41/amd) obtained by partial substitution of Si by Cu and Al atoms but showing full occupation of the Si crystal site (8e). While CeSi2 is a well-known valence-fluctuating paramagnetic compound, the CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 phase orders ferromagnetically at TC = 9.3 K. At low temperatures the easy-axis of magnetization is along the a-axis, which re-orients itself along the c-axis above 30 K. The presence of hysteresis in the magnetization curve, negative temperature coefficient of resistivity at high temperatures, reduced jump in the heat capacity and a relatively lower entropy released up to the ordering temperature, and enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient (~100 mJ/mol K2) show that CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58 is a Kondo lattice ferromagnetic, moderate heavy fermion compound. Analysis of the high temperature heat capacity data in the paramagnetic region lets us infer that the crystal electric field split doublet levels are located at 178 and 357 K, respectively, and Kondo temperature (8.4 K) is of the order of TC in CeCu0.18Al0.24Si1.58.

We present here a neutron diffraction study, both in zero field and as a function of magnetic field, of the magnetic structure of the tetragonal intermetallic \eun\ on a single crystalline sample. This material is known to undergo a cascade of transitions, first at 13.2\,K towards an incommensurate modulated magnetic structure, then at 10.5\,K to an equal moment, yet undetermined, antiferromagnetic structure. We show here that the low temperature phase presents a spiral moment arrangement with wave-vector {\bf k} = ($\frac{1}{4},\delta,0)$. For a magnetic field applied along the tetragonal {\bf c}-axis, the square root of the scattering intensity of a chosen reflection matches very well the complex metamagnetic behavior of the magnetization along {\bf c} measured previously. For the magnetic field applied along the {\bf b}-axis, two magnetic transitions are observed below the transition to a fully polarized state.

We have grown the single crystal of PrRhAl$_4$Si$_2$, which crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal structure. From the low temperature physical property measurements like, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity, we found that this compound does not show any magnetic ordering down to 70~mK. Our crystal field calculations on the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements reveal that the 9-fold degenerate $(2J+1)$ levels of Pr atom in PrRhAl$_4$Si$_2$, splits into 7 levels, with a singlet ground state and a well separated excited doublet state at 123~K, with a overall level splitting energy of 320~K., Comment: 5 figures

EuRhAl4Si2, crystallizes in tetragonal crystal structure and orders antiferromagnetically at ~12 K. The isothermal magnetization along the two principle directions is highly anisotropic despite Eu2+ being an S-state ion. The variation of entropy change, which is a measure of MCE, with field and temperature, calculated from the isothermal magnetization data taken at various temperatures along the principal crystallographic directions present interesting behavior in EuRhAl4Si2. In the magnetically ordered state the entropy change is non-monotonic below spin flip fields; however, in the paramagnetic region, it is negative irrespective of the strength of applied magnetic field. For H || [001] the maximum entropy change at 7 T is -21 J/Kg K around TN, which is large and comparable to the largest known values in this temperature range. The variation of the MCE with field strongly depends upon the direction of the applied magnetic field. We report the magnetic properties of two Eu based compounds, single crystalline EuIrGe$_3$ and EuRhGe$_3$, inferred from magnetisation, electrical transport, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu M\"{o}ssbauer spectroscopy. These previously known compounds crystallise in the non-centrosymmetric, tetragonal, $I4mm$, BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. Single crystals of EuIrGe$_3$ and EuRhGe$_3$ were grown using high temperature solution growth method using In as flux. EuIrGe$_3$ exhibits two magnetic orderings at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 12.4 K, and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 7.3 K. On the other hand EuRhGe$_3$ presents a single magnetic transition with a $T_{\rm N}$ = 12 K. $^{151}$Eu M\"{o}ssbauer spectra present evidence for a cascade of transitions from paramagnetic to incommensurate amplitude modulated followed by an equal moment antiferromagnetic phase at lower temperatures in EuIrGe$_3$, the transitions having a substantial first order character. On the other hand the $^{151}$Eu M\"{o}ssbauer spectra at 4.2 and 9 K in EuRhGe$_3$ present evidence of a single magnetic transition. In both compounds a superzone gap is observed for the current density $J\parallel$ [001], which enhances with transverse magnetic field. The magnetisation measured up to 14 T shows the occurrence of field induced transitions, which are well documented in the magnetotransport data as well. The magnetic phase diagram constructed from these data is complex, revealing the presence of many phases in the $H-T$ phase space.

We report on the physical properties of single crystalline EuRhSi$_3$ and polycrystalline EuIrSi$_3$, inferred from magnetisation, electrical transport, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. These previously known compounds crystallise in the tetragonal BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. The single crystal magnetisation in EuRhSi$_3$ has a strongly anisotropic behaviour at 2 K with a spin-flop field of 13 T, and we present a model of these magnetic properties which allows the exchange constants to be determined. In both compounds, specific heat shows the presence of a cascade of two close transitions near 50 K, and the $^{151}$Eu M\"ossbauer spectra demonstrate that the intermediate phase has an incommensurate amplitude modulated structure. We find anomalously large values, with respect to other members of the series, for the RKKY N\'eel temperature, for the spin-flop field (13 T), for the spin-wave gap ($\simeq$ 20-25 K) inferred from both resistivity and specific heat data, for the spin-disorder resistivity in EuRhSi$_3$ ($\simeq 35$ $\mu$Ohm.cm) and for the saturated hyperfine field (52 T). We show that all these quantities depend on the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, implying that the latter must be strongly enhanced in these two materials. EuIrSi$_3$ exhibits a giant magnetoresistance ratio, with values exceeding 600 % at 2 K in a field of 14 T., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

We report the synthesis and the magnetic properties of single crystalline CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ and their non magnetic La-analogs. The single crystals of these quaternary compounds were grown using Al-Si binary eutectic as flux. The anisotropic magnetic properties of the cerium compounds were explored in detail by means of magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistivity and heat capacity measurements. Both CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ undergo two antiferromagnetic transitions, first from the paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at $T_{\rm N1}$~=~12.6~K and 15.5~K, followed by a second transition at lower temperatures $T_{\rm N2}$~=~9.4~K and 13.8~K, respectively. The paramagnetic susceptibility is highly anisotropic and its temperature dependence in the magnetically ordered state suggests the $c$-axis to be the relatively easy axis of magnetization. Concomitantly, isothermal magnetization at 2~K along the $c$-axis shows a sharp spin-flop transition accompanied by a sizeable hysteresis, while it varies nearly linearly with field along the [100] direction up to the highest field 14~T, of our measurement. The electrical resistivity provides evidence of the Kondo interaction in both compounds, inferred from its $-lnT$ behavior in the paramagnetic region. The heat capacity data confirm the bulk nature of the two magnetic transitions in each compound, and further confirm the presence of Kondo interaction by a reduced value of the entropy associated with the magnetic ordering. From the heat capacity data below 1~K, the coefficient of the linear term in the electronic heat capacity, $\gamma$, is inferred to be 195.6 and 49.4~mJ/mol K$^2$ in CeRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and CeIrAl$_4$Si$_2$, respectively classifying these materials as moderate heavy fermion compounds., Comment: 16 pages, 11 Figures

We present detailed investigations in single crystals of two recently reported quaternary intermetallic compounds EuRhAl$_4$Si$_2$ and EuIrAl$_4$Si$_2$ employing magnetization, electrical resistivity in zero and applied fields, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu M\"{o}ssbauer spectroscopy measurements. The two compounds order antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 11.7 and 14.7\,K, respectively, each undergoing two magnetic transitions: the first from paramagnetic to incommensurate modulated antiferromagnetic, the second at lower temperature to a commensurate antiferromagnetic phase as confirmed by heat capacity and M\"{o}ssbauer spectra. The magnetic properties in the ordered state present a large anisotropy despite Eu$^{2+}$ being an $S$-state ion for which the single-ion anisotropy is expected to be weak. Two features in the magnetization measured along the $c$-axis are prominent. At 1.8\,K, a ferromagnetic-like jump occurs at very low field to a value one third of the saturation magnetization (1/3 M$_0$) followed by a wide plateau up to 2\,T for T = Rh and 4\,T for T = Ir. At this field value, a sharp hysteretic spin-flop transition occurs to a fully saturated state (M$_0$). Surprisingly, the magnetization does not return to origin when the field is reduced to zero in the return cycle, as expected in an antiferromagnet. Instead, a remnant magnetization 1/3 M$_0$ is observed and the magnetic loop around the origin shows hysteresis. This suggests that the zero field magnetic structure has a ferromagnetic component, and we present a model with up to third neighbor exchange and dipolar interaction which reproduces the magnetization curves and hints to an "up-up-down" magnetic structure in zero field., Comment: 9 Pages and 9 Figures

The occupied and the unoccupied electronic structure of CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$ single crystal has been studied using high resolution photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopy respectively. High resolution photoemission reveals the clear signature of Ce $4f$ states in the occupied electronic structure which was not observed earlier due to the poor resolution. The coulomb correlation energy in this system has been determined experimentally from the position of the $4f$ states above and below the Fermi level. Theoretically the correlation energy has been determined by using the first principles density functional calculations within the generalized gradient approximations taking into account the strong intra-atomic (on-site) interaction Hubbard $U_{eff}$ term. Although the valence band calculated with different $U_{eff}$ does not show significant difference, but the substantial changes are observed in the conduction band. The estimated value of correlation energy from both the theory and the experiment is $\approx$4.2~eV for CeAg$_2$Ge$_2$., Comment: Submitted in Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter

The magnetic state of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet CeNiC$_2$ has been studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. CeNiC$_2$ exhibits three magnetic phase transitions at $T_{N_1}$ = 20 K, $T_{N_2}$ = 10 K and $T_{N_3}$ = 2.5 K. The presence of long range magnetic order below 20 K is confirmed by the observation of oscillations in the $\mu$SR spectra between 10 and 20 K and a sharp increase in the muon depolarization rate. INS studies reveal two well-defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations around 8 and 30 meV. INS data have been analyzed using a CEF model and the wave functions were evaluated. We also calculated the direction and magnitude of the ground state moment using CEF wave functions and compare the results with that proposed from the neutron diffraction. Our CEF model correctly predicts that the moments order along the $b-$axis (or $y$-axis) and the observed magnetic moment is 0.687(5) $\mu_B$, which is higher than the moment observed from the neutron diffraction (0.25 $\mu_B$/Ce). The magnetization compensation phenomenon is observed for Sm1-xNdxScGe at x = 0.09 at a temperature near 90 K in a small applied magnetic field, which establishes the spin surplus status of magnetic moment of Sm in the host matrix. We also noted that the sample profiles in QD SQUID magnetometer become asymmetric in some situations indicating significant contributions from multiple moments higher than the dipole moment. We have successfully accounted for them using a fitting procedure involving the higher order magnetic moments., Comment: 2 pages, 4 figures

Single crystal of PrSi was grown by Czochralski method in a tetra-arc furnace. Powder x-ray diffraction of the as grown crystal revealed that PrSi crystallizes in FeB$-$type structure with space group $Pnma$ (no. 62). PrSi undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at 52 K with [010] direction as the easy axis of magnetization. Heat capacity data confirm the bulk nature of the transition at 52 K and exhibit a huge anomaly at the transition. A sharp rise in the low temperature heat capacity has been observed (below 5 K) which is attributed to the $^{141}$Pr nuclear Schottky heat capacity arising from the hyperfine field of the Pr moment. The estimated Pr magnetic moment 2.88 $\mu_{\rm B}$/Pr from the hyperfine splitting is in agreement with the saturation magnetization value obtained from the magnetization data measured at 2 K. From the crystal electric field (CEF) analysis of the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the heat capacity data it is found that the degenerate $J = 4$ Hund's rule derived state of Pr$^{3+}$-ion splits into nine singlets with an overall splitting of 284 K, the first excited singlet state separated by just 9 K from the ground state. The magnetic ordering in PrGe appears to be due to the exchange generated admixture of low lying crystal field levels. Magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been investigated from magnetization data along all the three principal crystallographic directions. Large magnetic entropy change, $-\Delta S_M = $22.2 J/kg K, and the relative cooling power, RCP = $460$ J/kg, characteristic of giant magneto caloric effect are achieved near the transition temperature ($T_{\rm C}$ = 52 K) for $H =$~70 kOe along $[010]$. Furthermore, the PrSi single crystal exhibits a giant MCE anisotropy., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Single crystals of EuNiGe$_3$ crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric BaNiSn$_3$-type structure have been grown using In flux, enabling us to explore the anisotropic magnetic properties which was not possible with previously reported polycrystalline samples. The EuNiGe$_3$ single crystalline sample is found to order antiferromagnetically at 13.2 K as revealed from the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity data. The low temperature magnetization M(H) is distinctly different for field parallel to ${ab}$-plane and $c$-axis; the ${ab}$-plane magnetization varies nearly linearly with field before the occurrence of an induced ferromagnetic phase (spin-flip) at 6.2 Tesla; on the other hand M(H) along the $c$-axis is accompanied by two metamagnetic transitions followed by a spin-flip at 4.1 T. A model including anisotropic exchange and dipole-dipole interactions reproduces the main features of magnetization plots but falls short of full representation. (H,T) phase diagrams have been constructed for the field applied along the principal directions. From the $^{151}$Eu M\"{o}ssbauer spectra, we determine that the 13.2 K transition leads to an incommensurate antiferromagnetic intermediate phase followed by a transition near 10.5 K to a commensurate antiferromagnetic configuration., Comment: 10 pages, 15 Figures

We investigate the electronic structure of CaFe$_2$As$_2$ using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy. Experimental results exhibit three energy bands crossing the Fermi level making hole pockets around the $\Gamma$-point. Temperature variation reveal a gradual shift of an energy band away from the Fermi level with the decrease in temperature in addition to the spin density wave (SDW) transition induced Fermi surface reconstruction of the second energy band across SDW transition temperature. The hole pocket in the former case eventually disappears at lower temperatures while the hole Fermi surface of the third energy band possessing finite $p$ orbital character survives till the lowest temperature studied. These results reveal signature of a complex charge redistribution among various energy bands as a function of temperature that might be associated to the exotic properties of this system., Comment: 6 figures

The anisotropic magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic compound CePd$_2$Ge$_2$, crystallizing in the tetragonal crystal structure have been investigated in detail on a single crystal grown by Czochralski method. From the electrical transport, magnetization and heat capacity data, the N\'{e}el temperature is confirmed to be 5.1 K. Anisotropic behaviour of magnetization and resistivity is observed along the two principal crystallographic directions viz., [100] and [001]. The isothermal magnetization measured in the magnetically ordered state at 2 K exhibits a spin re-orientation at 13.5 T for field applied along [100] direction, whereas the magnetization was linear along the [001] direction attaining a value of 0.94 $\mu_{\rm B}$/Ce at 14 T. The reduced value of the magnetization is attributed to the crystalline electric field (CEF) effects. A sharp jump in the specific heat at the magnetic ordering temperature is observed. After subtracting the phononic contribution, the jump in the heat capacity amounts to 12.5 J/K mol which is the expected value for a spin ${1}{2}$ system. From the CEF analysis of the magnetization data the excited crystal field split energy levels were estimated to be at 120 K and 230 K respectively, which quantitatively explain the observed Schottky anomaly in the heat capacity. Magneto-optical imaging of a single crystal of CaFe1.94Co0.06As2, shows anomalous remnant magnetization within Meissner like regions of the superconductor. The unconventional shape of the local magnetization hysteresis loop suggests admixture of superconducting and magnetic fractions governing the response. Near the superconducting transition temperature, local magnetic field exceeds the applied field resulting in a diamagnetic to positive magnetization transformation. The observed anomalies in the local magnetic field distribution are accompanied with enhanced bulk pinning in the CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 single crystals. The equiatomic PrGe single crystal was grown by Czochralski pulling method. The grown single crystal was found to have CrB-type orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group \textit{Cmcm} (#63). Transport and magnetization data reveal large anisotropy in the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization. PrGe was found to exhibit two consecutive magnetic orderings at 44 K and 41.5 K, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility measurement along the three principal directions, in low applied fields, revealed a cusp like behaviour at 44 K while at 41.5 K a ferromagnetic like increase was observed. The hysteritic behaviour in the magnetization measurement at 1.8 K confirmed the ferromagnetic nature of PrGe at low temperatures. The heat capacity data clearly revealed the bulk nature of two magnetic transitions by the presence of two sharp peaks attaining values exceeding 40 J/K$\cdot$mol at the respective temperatures. The absence of Schottky contribution in the magnetic part of heat capacity indicates a quasi-ninefold degenerate J=4 magnetic ground state in this system. The low temperature data of electrical resistivity and the magnetic part of heat capacity show an existence of gap in the spin-wave spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Neutron diffraction measurements on a high quality single crystal of CeAu2Ge2 reveal two new magnetic structures that coexist with commensurate long range antiferromagnetic order below the Neel temperature T_N ~ 14 K. The new magnetic structures, which exhibit distinct temperature and field dependencies, are described by both commensurate and incommensurate magnetic structures and introduces new region in the H-T phase diagram. These new experimental observations provide essential information for developing a universal understanding of the magnetic properties of this class of Ce-based CeX2M2 (X = Cu, Ag, Au; M = Ge, Si) compounds, which are prototypes for exploring quantum phase transitions and their interplay with unconventional superconductivity., Comment: Heavy fermion

Employing {\it state of the art} high resolution photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, an unique pnictide, where antiferromagnetism of Eu layer survives within the superconducting phase due to `FeAs' layers achieved via substitution and/or pressure. High energy and angle resolution helped to reveal pseudogap-quasiparticle features having primarily As 4$p$ character and spin density wave transition induced band folding in the electronic structure. A weakly dispersing feature of dominant As 4$p$ character is discovered around 80 meV that becomes weaker in intensity below 20 K manifesting influence of antiferromagnetic order on conduction electrons. These results provide an evidence of a link between the pseudogap states and magnetism that could be revealed employing high resolutions.

Imaging local magnetic field distribution in a single crystal of superconductor CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 shows the presence of anomalous remnant magnetization within Meissner like regions of the sample. Close to the superconducting transition temperature we find a coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic correlations. While the magnetic correlations are enhanced with the lowering of temperature, interestingly the area over which the magnetic phase exists shrinks at the expense of a growing superconducting phase in the sample. Single crystals of CeGe and its non-magnetic analogue LaGe have been grown by Czochralski method. CeGe compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic FeB-type crystal structure with the space group \textit{Pnma} (#62). The anisotropic magnetic properties have been investigated on well oriented single crystals by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity. It has been found that CeGe orders antiferromagnetically at 10.5 K. Both transport and magnetic studies have revealed large anisotropy reflecting the orthorhombic crystal structure. The magnetization measurement measured at 2 K revealed metamagnetic transitions along the [010] direction at 4.8 and 6.4 T and along [100] direction at a critical field of 10.7 T, while the magnetiztaion along [001] direction was increasing linearly without any anomaly up to a field of 16 T. From the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization measurements it has been found that [010] direction is the easy axis of magnetization. The electrical resistivity along the three crystallographic directions exhibited an upturn at $T_{\rm N}$ indicating the superzone gap formation below $T_{\rm N}$ in this compound. We have performed the crystalline electric field (CEF) analysis on the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity data and found that the ground state is doublet and the splitting energies from the ground state to the first and second excited doublet states were estimated to be 39 and 111 K, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

The magnetic properties of single crystalline EuPtGe$_3$, crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been studied by means of magnetisation, electrical resistivity, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu M\"ossbauer spectroscopy. The susceptibility and heat capacity data indicate a magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N}$ = 11\,K. The M\"ossbauer data confirm this conclusion, but evidence a slight first order character of the transition. Analysing the magnetisation data using a mean field model with two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices allows to explain some aspects of the magnetic behaviour, and to derive the first and second neighbour exchange integrals in EuPtGe$_3$., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

We report on the experimental evidences for an unusual coupling between the magnetic field- induced fluctuations of correlated Ce-ions coinciding with the discontinuous movement of the underlying spin density wave in the intermetallic rare earth compound CeAg2Ge2. The measurements performed using neutron scattering and magnetic Gruneisen ratio methods suggest that the coupling onsets at H= 2.7 T, T < 3.8 K and persists to the lowest measurement temperature T ~ 0.05 K. For Sm(3+) ions in a vast majority of metallic systems, the following interesting scenario has been conjured up for long, namely, a magnetic lattice of tiny self (spin-orbital) compensated 4f-moments exchange coupled (and phase reversed) to the polarization in the conduction band. We report here the identification of a self-compensation behavior in a variety of ferromagnetic Sm intermetallics via the fingerprint of a shift in the magnetic hysteresis (M-H) loop from the origin. Such an attribute, designated as exchange bias in the context of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic multilayers, accords these compounds a potential for niche applications in spintronics. We also present results on magnetic compensation behavior on small Gd doping (2.5 atomic percent) in one of the Sm ferromagnets (viz. SmCu(4)Pd). We have studied a EuFe2As2 single crystal by neutron diffraction under magnetic fields up to 3.5 T and temperatures down to 2 K. A field induced spin reorientation is observed in the presence of a magnetic field along both the a and c axes, respectively. Above critical field, the ground state antiferromagnetic configuration of Eu$^{2+}$ moments transforms into a ferromagnetic structure with moments along the applied field direction. The magnetic phase diagram for Eu magnetic sublattice in EuFe2As2 is presented. A considerable strain ($\sim$0.9%) is induced by the magnetic field, caused by the realignment of the twinning structure. Furthermore, the realignment of the twinning structure is found to be reversible with the rebound of magnetic field, which suggested the existence of magnetic shape-memory effect. The Eu moment ordering exhibits close relationship with the twinning structure. We argue that the Zeeman energy in combined with magnetic anisotropy energy is responsible for the observed spin-lattice coupling., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The pressure dependence of a large number of phonon modes in CaFe2As2 with energies covering the full range of the phonon spectrum has been studied using inelastic x-ray and neutron scattering. The observed phonon frequency changes are in general rather small despite the sizable changes of the lattice parameters at the phase transition. This indicates that the bonding properties are not profoundly altered by the phase transition. The transverse acoustic phonons propagating along the c-direction are an exception because they stiffen very significantly in response to the large contraction of the c-axis. The lattice parameters are found to change significantly as a function of pressure before, during and after the first-order phase transition. However, the frequencies change nearly uniformly with the change in the lattice parameters due to pressure, with no regard specifically to the first-order phase transition. Density functional theory describes the frequencies in both the zero pressure and in the collapsed phase in a satisfactory way if based on the respective crystal structures.

Anisotropic magnetic properties of single crystalline RAu_{2}Ge_{2} (R = La, Ce and Pr) compounds are reported. LaAu_{2}Ge_{2} exhibit a Pauli-paramagnetic behavior whereas CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} and PrAu_{2}Ge_{2} show an antiferromagnetic ordering with N\grave{e}el temperatures T_{N} = 13.5 and 9 K, respectively. The anisotropic magnetic response of Ce and Pr compounds establishes [001] as the easy axis of magnetization and a sharp spin-flip type metamagnetic transition is observed in the magnetic isotherms. The resistance and magnetoresistance behavior of these compounds, in particular LaAu_{2}Ge_{2}, indicate an anisotropic Fermi surface. The magnetoresistivity of CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} apparently reveals the presence of a residual Kondo interaction. A crystal electric field analysis of the anisotropic susceptibility in conjunction with the experimentally inferred Schottky heat capacity enables us to propose a crystal electric field level scheme for Ce and Pr compounds. For CeAu_{2}Ge_{2} our values are in excellent agreement with the previous reports on neutron diffraction. Single crystals of EuPtSi$_3$, which crystallize in the BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been grown by high temperature solution growth method using molten Sn as the solvent. EuPtSi$_3$ which lacks the inversion symmetry and has only one Eu site in the unit cell is found to be an antiferromagnet with two successive magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 17 K and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 16 K, as inferred from magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu M\"ossbauer measurements. The isothermal magnetization data for $H \parallel$ [001] reveal a metamagnetic transition at a critical field $H_{\rm c}$ = 1 T. The magnetization saturates to a moment value of 6.43 $\mu_{\rm B}$/Eu above 5.9 T (9.2 T) for $H \parallel $ [001] ([100]), indicating that these fields are spin-flip fields for the divalent Eu moments along the two axes. The origin of this anisotropic behaviour is discussed. A magnetic (H, T) phase diagram has been constructed from the temperature dependence of isothermal magnetization data. The reduced jump in the heat capacity at $T_{\rm N1}$ indicates a transition to an incommensurate, amplitude modulated antiferromagnetic structure. The shape of the hyperfine field split M\"ossbauer spectrum at $T_{\rm N1}$ provides additional support for the proposed nature of this magnetic transition., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. We report on the magnetic behavior of RRhB (R = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb and Tm) and RRhC (R = La, Ce, Pr and Gd) compounds crystallizing in the cubic perovskite type structure with space group Pm3m. The heat capacity data on Pauli-paramagnetic LaRhB and LaRhC indicate a high frequency vibrating motion of boron and carbon atoms in the unit cell. Ce is in -like nonmagnetic state in both the compounds. Pr compounds show a dominant crystal field effect with a nonmagnetic singlet ground state in PrRhB and a nonmagnetic quadrupolar doublet in PrRhC. Compounds with other rare earths order ferromagnetically at low temperatures except TmRhB in which the zero field evolution of magnetic interactions is relatively more complicated. The electrical resistivity of GdRhB decreases with increasing temperature in the paramagnetic state in the vicinity of T, which is rarely seen in ferromagnets. The behavior is discussed to be arising due to the short range spin fluctuation and a possible contribution from Fermi surface geometry., Comment: 14 Figs and a text file

Among various parent compounds of iron pnictide superconductors, EuFe2As2 stands out due to the presence of both spin density wave of Fe and antiferromagnetic ordering (AFM) of the localized Eu2+ moment. Single crystal neutron diffraction studies have been carried out to determine the magnetic structure of this compound and to investigate the coupling of two magnetic sublattices. Long range AFM ordering of Fe and Eu spins was observed below 190 K and 19 K, respectively. The ordering of Fe2+ moments is associated with the wave vector k = (1,0,1) and it takes place at the same temperature as the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural phase transition, which indicates the strong coupling between structural and magnetic components. The ordering of Eu moment is associated with the wave vector k = (0,0,1). While both Fe and Eu spins are aligned along the long a axis as experimentally determined, our studies suggest a weak coupling between the Fe and Eu magnetism., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, neutron and x-ray diffraction have been used to characterize the properties of single crystalline CaFe2-xNixAs2 as a function of Ni doping for x varying from 0 to 0.1. The combined first-order structural and magnetic phase transitions occur together in the undoped system at 172 K, with a small decrease in the area of the a-b plane along with an abrupt increase in the length of the c-axis in the orthorhombic phase. With increasing x the ordered moment and transition temperature decrease, but the transition remains sharp at modest doping while the area of the a-b plane quickly decreases and then saturates. Warming and cooling data in the resistivity and neutron diffraction indicate hysteresis of ~2 K. At larger doping the transition is more rounded, and decreases to zero for x=0.06. The susceptibility is anisotropic for all values of x. Electrical resistivity for x = 0.053 and 0.06 shows a superconducting transition with an onset of nearly 15 K which is further corroborated by substantial diamagnetic susceptibility. For the fully superconducting sample there is no long range magnetic order and the structure remains tetragonal at all temperature, but there is an anomalous increase in the area of the a-b plane in going to low T. Heat capacity data show that the density of states at the Fermi level increases for x > 0.053 as inferred from the value of Sommerfeld coefficient. The regime of superconductivity is quite restrictive, with a maximum TC of 15 K and an upper critical field Hc2=14 T. We have grown the single crystals of LaAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ and CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ by high temperature solution method and report on the anisotropic magnetic behavior of CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ . The compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic structure with space group \textit {Pnma}. LaAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ shows a Pauli-paramagnetic behavior. CeAu$_{2}$In$_{4}$ do not order down to 1.8 K. The anisotropy in electrical transport and thermal behavior of single crystalline R$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ series of compounds is presented. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space gropup P4/mmm. The nonmagnetic counterparts of the series namely Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Lu$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$show a behavior consistent with the low density of states at the fermi level. In Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, a possibility of charge density wave transition is observed at $\approx$ 30 K. Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ and Er$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ show a presence of short range correlation above the magnetic ordering temperature of the compound. In case of Gd$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$, the magnetoresistance exhibits a significant anisotropy for current parallel to {[}100{]} and {[}001{]} directions. Compounds with other magnetic rare earths (R = Tb, Dy, Ho and Tm) show the normal expected magnetic behavior whereas Dy$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$ exhibits the possibility of charge density wave (CDW) transition at approximately same temperature as that of Y$_{2}$CoGa$_{8}$. Extensive inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonons on a single crystal of CaFe2As2 allowed us to establish a fairly complete picture of phonon dispersions in the main symmetry directions. The phonon spectra were also calculated by density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA). There are serious discrepancies between calculations done for the optimized structure and experiment, because the optimised structure is not the ambient pressure structure but is very close to the collapsed structure reached at p = 3.5 kbar. However, if the experimental crystal structure is used the calculation gives correct frequencies of most phonons. The most important new result is that linewidths/frequencies of certain modes are larger/softer than predicted by DFT-LDA. We also observed strong temperature dependence of some phonons near the structural phase transition near 173K. Rare earth based intermetallics, SmScGe and NdScGe, are shown to exhibit near zero net magnetization with substitutions of 6 to 9 atomic percent of Nd and 25 atomic percent of Gd, respectively. The notion of magnetic compensation in them is also elucidated by the crossover of zero magnetization axis at low magnetic fields (less than 103 Oe) and field-induced reversal in the orientation of the magnetic moments of the dissimilar rare earth ions at higher magnetic fields. These magnetically ordered materials with no net magnetization and appreciable conduction electron polarization display an attribute of an exchange bias field, which can be tuned. We report anisotropic dc magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$, electrical resistivity $\rho(T)$, and heat capacity $C(T)$ measurements on the single crystals of CaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ for $x$ = 0 and 0.06. Large sized single crystals were grown by the high temperature solution method with Sn as the solvent. For the pure compound with $x$ = 0, a high temperature transition at 170 K is observed which is attributed to a combined spin density wave (SDW) ordering and a structural phase transition. On the other hand, for the Co-doped samples for $x$ = 0.06, the SDW transition is suppressed while superconductivity is observed at $\simeq$17 K. The superconducting transition has been confirmed from the magnetization and electrical resistivity studies. The $^{57}$Fe M\"ossbauer spectrum in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ indicates that the SDW ordering is incommensurate. The results of the magnetization studies on Pr_{5}Ge_{3}and Tb_{5}Ge_{3} single crystals are reported. Single Crystals of Pr_{5}Ge_{3} and Tb_{5}Ge_{3} compounds were successfully grown by Czochralski method. These compounds crystallize in a Mn_{5}Si_{3} type hexagonal structure with space group P6_{3}/mcm. Ferromagnetic correlations set in at around 36 K in Pr_{5}Ge_{3} in the ab plane followed by an antiferromagnetic transition at 13 K. Along the c-axis the magnetization shows a ferromagnetic transition around 13 K with an overall ferrimagnetic behavior. At 2K, the magnetic isotherm of the compound along [0001] direction is typical for a ferromagnet, while a field induced ferromagnetic type response is observed along the [10\overline{\mathit{1}}0] direction. Hexagonal ab plane or [10\overline{\mathit{1}}0] direction was found to be the easy axis of magnetization. Tb_{5}Ge_{3} orders antiferromagneticaly at 85 K with the hexagonal ab plane as easy axis of magnetization. We have synthesized a new quaternary borocarbide PrPd$_{2}$B$_{2}$C and measured its magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat. The compound crystallizes in the LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C-type tetragonal structure (space group {\it I4/mmm}). Above 100 K the magnetic susceptibility follows Curie-Weiss behavior with effective moment $\mu_{eff}$ = 3.60 $\mu_{B}$, which is very close to the value expected for Pr$^{3+}$ ions. We do not find evidence for magnetic or superconducting transition down to 0.5 K. Specific heat exhibits a broad Schottky type anomaly with a peak at 24 K, very likely related to crystal electric field (CEF) excitation. The magnetic properties suggest the presence of a singlet CEF ground state leading to a Van-Vleck paramagnetic ground state., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures

We report the single crystal growth and anisotropic magnetic properties of the tetragonal RAg$_2$Ge$_2$ (R = Pr, Nd and Sm) compounds which crystallize in the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ type crystal structure with the space group \textit{I4/mmm}. The single crystals of RAg$_2$Ge$_2$ (R = Pr, Nd and Sm) were grown by self-flux method using Ag:Ge binary alloy as flux. From the magnetic studies on single crystalline samples we have found that PrAg$_2$Ge$_2$ and NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ order antiferromagnetically at 12 K and 2 K respectively, thus corroborating the earlier polycrystalline results. SmAg$_2$Ge$_2$ also orders antiferromagnetically at 9.2 K. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization show a large anisotropy and the easy axis of magnetization for PrAg$_2$Ge$_2$ and NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ is along the [100] direction where as it changes to [001] direction for SmAg$_2$Ge$_2$. Two metamagnetic transitions were observed in NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ at $H_{\rm m1}$ = 1.25 T and $H_{\rm m2}$ =3.56 T for the field parallel to [100] direction where as the magnetization along [001] direction was linear indicating the hard axis of magnetization., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to SCES-2008 Proceedings. The results of dc and ac magnetization, electrical resistance and heat capacity studies in an admixed rare earth alloy Nd0.75Gd0.25Rh3B2, which is close to the zero magnetization limit, are reported. Novel observations include the two antiferromagnetic like transitions, concomitant repeated/multiple magnetic compensation behaviour and a characteristic oscillatory magnetic response, with temperature dependence of magnetization at low fields crossing the M = 0 axis thrice. The effective coercive field relating to the residual remanence also has an oscillatory response, with two minima located close to two zero-crossover temperatures. The unusual behavior in Nd0.75Gd0.25Rh3B2 is conjectured to arise from its anisotropic hexagonal structure, with planar anisotropy, resulting in a quasi one dimensional electronic structure and the accentuated role of conduction electron polarization near the zero magnetization limit., Comment: 16 page text and 7 figures

Single crystals of R$_2$CoGa$_8$ series of compounds were grown, for the first time, by high temperature solution growth (flux) method. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal crystal structure with the space group $P4/mmm$. It has been found that R$_2$CoGa$_8$ phase forms only with the heavier rare earths, starting from Gd with a relatively large $c/a$ ratio of $\approx$ 2.6. The resultant anisotropic magnetic properties of the compounds were investigated along the two principal crystallographic directions of the crystal viz., along [100] and [001]. The nonmagnetic compounds Y$_2$CoGa$_8$ and Lu$_2$CoGa$_8$ show diamagnetic behavior down to the lowest temperature (1.8 K) pointing out the non-magnetic nature of Co in these compounds and a relatively low density of electronic states at the Fermi level. Compounds with the magnetic rare earths order antiferromagnetically at temperatures lower than 30 K. The easy axis of magnetization for R$_2$CoGa$_8$ (R = Tb, Dy and Ho) is found to be along the [001] direction and it changes to [100] direction for Er$_2$CoGa$_8$ and Tm$_2$CoGa$_8$. The magnetization behavior is analyzed on the basis of crystalline electric field (CEF) model.
