Abstract

As per 2011 census, nearly 44% of rural households do not have access to electricity in India and those who have access suffer from unreliable electricity supply affecting education, income generation and access to information. For lighting, one-third households rely on kerosene, which provides poor quality light and is damaging to health. Lack of access and reliable supply undermines the ability of the households and micro/small enterprises to move out of the vicious cycle of energy poverty. In rural India, several of these enterprises are owned and managed by women entrepreneurs and self-help groups, which were established for income-generating activities and empowerment of women. In 2005, Government of India initiated a large, national rural electrification programme to provide electricity to all villages and households. It has been recognized that grid supply may not be feasible or cost-effective for every village, and hence, due attention is being given to renewable-based decentralized distributed generation systems, such as biomass gasifiers. This paper provides insights regarding experience of developing two-stage biomass gasifier for Indian conditions through an innovative technology transfer and intellectual property rights sharing agreement and its field implementation through partnerships with the state government and community-based organizations in the state of Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. This technology will provide reliable electricity to women groups owned livelihood activities, increasing the income generated by them, and electrify rural households.

Abstract

The Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is an on field programmable device which can be designed for different applications. Various types of software are available for its synthesis. The cell placement depends upon the designing and programming languages used for FPGA. In this paper cell placement technique of FPGA architecture is analyzed for the application of Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) technique used in speed control of an induction motor. The modulation pulses are produced due to the various components activated and their interconnection in Configurable Logic Blocks (CLBs). Few of its components are so analyzed to find out the reason for their desired output response. This survey has also been conducted to find the correlation of LUTs and formulation of output.

Abstract

The report is structured as follows. Chapter 2 presents the background to this study. Based on secondary data, it first describes the rice milling sector to illustrate the characteristics of the sector and to establish the importance of small scale parboiling rice mills. No secondary data were available either on the socio-economic characteristics of the user group or on the attitudes to technological change among owners and operators of rice mills. This information was important to the design of the project methodology; for indicating the nature of technological improvements acceptable to user groups; for issues of affordability and for subsequent dissemination activities. Section 2.3, draws on the baseline survey carried out in Phase 1, to analyse these characteristics. Chapter 3 first analyses the characteristics of the traditional furnace design and then demonstrates how the new design of furnace-boiler unit has increased combustion efficiency by more than the project objective; improved the working conditions of the workers and increased profitability of the owners. It also sets out the potentials and limitations for wider replications. Chapter 4 focuses on enhancing the production of briquettes using husk from parboiled rice. It describes the current procedures used for briquette production, the difficulties of using husk of parboiled rice, and the improvements developed by this project to address these constraints. Chapter 5 discusses the wider socio-economic benefits that could be generated by the rice husk and bran saved by improved combustion efficiency. It also shows that briquettes, where available, have become the poor man's fuel. Chapter 6 initially set out the characteristics of the rice husk ash in Bangladesh. It then describes the current uses in other countries and identifies potential alternative uses in Bangladesh. Chapter 7 describes the dissemination activities already undertaken and their outcomes and then outlines further dissemination activities that could potentially enhance uptake. Chapter 8 will conclude the report with recommendations and identify further research needs in biomass fuel use.

Abstract

This paper deals with the mathematical modeling and availability of a crushing system of a sugar plant. Crushing system consists of three subsystems with three possible states: full working state, reduced capacity working and failure. The failure and working states of all subsystems are assumed to be constant. Problem formulation is done by Markov birth-death process, while the operational behavior of the system is represented by the transition diagram. The model has been developed by considering some assumptions. The data in the feasible range has been selected from a survey of sugar plant and the effect of each subsystem on the system availability is tabulated in the form of matrices, which provide various availability levels for different combinations of failure and repair rates of all subsystems. Abstract

Edible and non-edible oils are used for the production of biodiesel from the last so many years and these oils are extracted from their respective seeds. Jatropha oil is used as a feedstock to produce biodiesel for running the Compression Ignition engine. A statistical model is developed to interrelate the trans-esterification process variables for the biodiesel yield using design of experiment approach by selecting central composite design of a response surface methodology. Results shown in this paper indicate that the optimum observed yield of 95.5% has the following reaction conditions: Molar ratio 19.84 (% v/v), reaction time 3 h, reaction temperature 70°C, catalyst concentration 4.18 wt% and stirrer rpm 650. Also, the yield produced is higher when compared with 93.5% which was observed by Lee paper using the same methodology.
