Abstract

Paracalanus parvus is reported as the most abundant representative of the genus and one of the main components of the coastal zooplankton in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. However, the subtle taxonomic differences between P. parvus and the congeneric species P. indicus and P. quasimodo, in combination with the ample morphological variation found in Mediterranean specimens, render problematic the correct identification. A recent molecular study by Cornils and Held (2014) provided evidence of cryptic speciation in the P. parvus complex and indicated that P. parvus s.s. does not have global distribution, but may be restricted to the northeastern Atlantic. In order to clarify the taxonomic status and distribution of this species complex in the Mediterranean and Black Seas, a study was conducted on Paracalanus specimens collected from different locations across the aforementioned marine basins and sequenced for portion of the COI mitochondrial gene. An accurate taxonomic analysis was also carried out to correlate morphological characteristics with the molecular species' assignation. The phylogenetic analysis of the specimens together with the publicly available sequences of P. parvus complex revealed the presence of four molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) in the Mediterranean, which differed in abundance and geographic distribution. The combination of morphological and molecular data revealed great inconsistencies between morphospecies and MOTUs. Moreover, several bulk zooplankton samples were analyzed through DNA metabarcoding in the frame of the “MetaCopepod” project to provide more extensive information on the spatiotemporal distribution and abundance of the target species

30. Partition of planktonic respiratory carbon requirements during a phytoplankton spring bloom

Abstract

We studied the effect of variable phytoplankton biomass and dominance of the diatom Skeletonema marinoi on the planktonic community respiratory carbon requirement over a period of 14 days (14-28 April, 2008) in 3 different mesocosms filled with natural water at Espegrend marine biological field station by Raunefjord, Norway. The carbon requirement was measured on mesozooplankton (the calanoid copepod Calanus finmarchicus) and three different size fraction; <200 µm (dominated by microzooplankton), <15 µm (dominated by nanoplankton including most of the phytoplankton) and particles passing GF/C (dominated by bacterioplankton) by measuring oxygen consumption with an optode system with two SensorDish Readers. The respiratory carbon requirement showed no clear trend over time for any of the four groups. The mesozooplankton contributed the least to the total community carbon requirement, corresponding to less than 6% of primary production. In contrast, microzooplankton and nanoplankton consistently dominated the community carbon requirement, corresponding to > 50% of the primary production, while bacterioplankton showed an intermediate and variable contribution (ca <20% with a max of 50%). Feeding experiments on mesozooplankton (C. finmarchicus) two days before the peak in phytoplankton biomass, showed that the copepods ingested 2.4-4.3 times their respiratory carbon requirements, thus giving a high potential for growth. Respiratory carbon requirements of mesozooplankton were not significantly related to dominance or quantity of food available, whereas the respiratory carbon requirements of other groups were all related to the production of 22:6(n-3) fatty acid. The study confirms the important role of microorganisms in the biological carbon transformation through the food web during a phytoplankton spring bloom.

Abstract

The internal organization of plankton communities plays a key role in biogeochemical cycles and in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the structure of a marine plankton community (including both unicellular and multicellular organisms) was inferred by applying an ecological network approach to species abundances observed weekly at the long-term ecological research station MareChiara (LTER-MC) in the Gulf of Naples (Tyrrhenian Sea, Mediterranean Sea) in the summers of 2002-2009. Two distinct conditions, characterized by different combination of salinity and chlorophyll values, alternated at the site: one influenced by coastal waters, herein named 'green', and the other reflecting more offshore conditions, named 'blue'. The green and blue 'phases' showed different keystone biological elements: namely, large diatoms and small-sized flagellates, respectively. Several correlations amongst species belonging to different trophic groups were found in both phases (connectance ~0.30). In the green phase, several links between phytoplankton and mesozooplankton and within the latter were detected, suggesting matter flow from microbes up to carnivorous zooplankton. A microbial-loop-like sub-web, including mixo- and heterotrophic dinoflagellates and ciliates, was present in the green phase, but it was relatively more important in the blue phase. The latter observation suggests a more intense cycling of matter at the microbial trophic level in the blue phase. These results show that different modes of ecological organization can emerge from relatively small changes in the composition of aquatic communities coping with environmental variability. This highlights a significant plasticity in the internal structure of plankton webs, which should be taken into account in predictions of the potential effects of climatic oscillations on aquatic ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles therein. The Gulf of Naples (Central Tyrrhenian Sea, Western Mediterranean Sea) extends between 40°50'-40°32'N and 13°52'-14°28'E, with an area of 870 km2 and an average depth of 170 m. About 4 million people live along the coasts, which have been inhabited since the pre-Roman age. The Gulf is characterized by the contrast between highly polluted areas (Bagnoli-Coroglio, Eastern-Naples) and pristine sites identified as Marine Protected Areas (Punta Campanella, Regno di Nettuno). The macrosite includes two sampling stations, one for the study of plankton and one for the study of benthos. The plankton sampling area is located off the city of Naples, at the border between the eutrophic littoral area and the oligotrophic open waters. The benthic sampling site is occupied by the highly valuable Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile meadows which extend over a wide bathymetric range along the Ischia Island coasts. A further peculiarity of this island stemming from its volcanic nature is represented by the CO2 emissions from the seabed which allow to study the adaptations of organisms and benthic ecosystems to acidification. In support to the observational activities, two MEDA-elastic buoys were installed in 2016 at a short distance from the coast, one off the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn and the other off Bagnoli. The buoys are equipped with meteorological sensors, multi-parametric profiling probes and ADCP current-meters. High-frequency data are transmitted in real time via a broadband Wi-Fi bridge and also via the GSM network.

37. Epipelagic community as prominent biosensor for sub-micron and nanoparticles uptake: Insights from field and laboratory experiments.

Abstract

Nowadays, ENMs/NPLs particles have not yet been extensively measured in the environment, but there is increased concern that this size fraction may be more widely distributed and hazardous than larger-sized particles. This study aimed to examine the bioaccumulation potential of engineered nanomaterials and nanoplastics (ENMs/NPLs) across marine food webs, focusing on plankton communities and commercial fish species (Engraulis encrasicolus and Scomber colias) from the Gulf of Naples. Laboratory experiments on plankton assemblages exposed to fluorescent polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs, 100 nm) for 24h at concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 10 mg/L confirmed nanoplastic uptake in phytoplankton and zooplankton, indicating a dose-dependent internalization in plankton communities. Notably, in natural samples no particles were detected in fish muscle or liver tissues, suggesting limited translocation. Unexpectedly, titanium oxide particles (<1 μm) were found in natural phytoplankton, highlighting the potential presence of other nanoparticles in marine systems.
