Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The HARP collaboration has presented measurements of the double-differential pi+/pi- production cross-section in the range of momentum 100 MeV/c <= p 800 MeV/c and angle 0.35 rad <= theta <= 2.15 rad with proton beams hitting thin nuclear targets. In many applications the extrapolation to long targets is necessary. In this paper the analysis of data taken with long (one interaction length) solid cylindrical targets made of carbon, tantalum and lead is presented. The data were taken with the large acceptance HARP detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN PS. The secondary pions were produced by beams of protons with momenta 5 GeV/c, 8 GeV/c and 12 GeV/c. The tracking and identification of the produced particles were performed using a small-radius cylindrical time projection chamber (TPC) placed inside a solenoidal magnet. Incident protons were identified by an elaborate system of beam detectors. Results are obtained for the double-differential yields per target nucleon d2 sigma / dp dtheta. The measurements are compared with predictions of the MARS and GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 43 pages, 20 figures

The secondary pions were produced by beams in a momentum range from 3 GeV/c to 12.9 GeV/c hitting a solid target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. The tracking and identification of the produced particles was performed using a small-radius cylindrical time projection chamber (TPC) placed inside a solenoidal magnet. Incident particles were identified by an elaborate system of beam detectors. Results are obtained for the double-differential cross-sections d2sigma/dpdtheta at six incident beam momenta. Data at 3 GeV/c, 5 GeV/c, 8 GeV/c, and 12 GeV/c are available for all targets while additional data at 8.9 GeV/c and 12.9 GeV/c were taken in positive particle beams on Be and Al targets, respectively. Abstract: 38 páginas, 31 figuras, 4 tablas.-- PACS nrs.: 13.75.Cs; 13.85.Ni.-- El Pdf del artículo es la versión pre-print: arXiv:0706.1600v1.-- HARP Collaboration: et al., A measurement of the double-differential cross-section for the production of charged pions in proton-tantalum collisions emitted at large angles from the incoming beam direction is presented. The data were taken in 2002 with the HARP detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN PS. The pions were produced by proton beams in a momentum range from 3 GeV/c to 12 CeV/c hitting a tantalum target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. The angular and momentum range covered by the experiment (100 MeV/c ≤ p ≤ 800 MeV/c and 0.35 rad ≤ Θ < 2.15 rad) is of particular importance for the design of a neutrino factory. The produced particles were detected using a small-radius cylindrical time projection chamber (TPC) placed in a solenoidal magnet. Track recognition, momentum determination and particle identification were all performed based on the measurements made with the TPC. An elaborate system of detectors in the beam line ensured the identification of the incident particles. Results are shown for the double-differential cross-sections d(2)σ/dpdΘ at four incident proton beam momenta (3 GeV/c, 5 GeV/c, 8 GeV/c and 12 GeV/c). In addition, the pion yields within the acceptance of typical neutrino factory designs are shown as a function of beam momentum. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). The charm production rate as a function of the antineutrino energy is found to be in good agreement with previous results derived from di-lepton data. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: Measurements of double-differential charged pion production cross-sections in interactions of 12 GeV/c protons on O2 and N2 thin targets are presented in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV/c ≤ pπ < 8 GeV/c and 50 mrad ≤ θπ < 250 mrad (in the laboratory frame) and are compared with p-C results. For p-N2 (p-O2) interactions the analysis is performed using 38576 (7522) reconstructed secondary pions. The analysis uses the beam instrumentation and the forward spectrometer of the HARP experiment at CERN PS. The measured cross-sections have a direct impact on the precise calculation of atmospheric neutrino fluxes and on the improved reliability of extensive air shower simulations by reducing the uncertainties of hadronic interaction models in the low energy range. In particular, the present results allow the common hypothesis that p-C data can be used to predict the p-N2 and p-O2 pion production cross-sections to be tested. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The results of the measurements of the double-differential production cross-sections of pions, d2 σπ / d p d Ω, in p-C and π±-C interactions using the forward spectrometer of the HARP experiment are presented. The incident particles are 12 GeV/c protons and charged pions directed onto a carbon target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. For p-C interactions the analysis is performed using 100,035 reconstructed secondary tracks, while the corresponding numbers of tracks for π--C and π+-C analyses are 106,534 and 10,122, respectively. Cross-section results are presented in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV / c ≤ pπ < 8 GeV / c and 30 mrad ≤ θπ < 240 mrad in the laboratory frame. Abstract: PURPOSE: A complete economic evaluation requires accurate data concerning the resources used, outcomes, and utilities (patient's preferences) to properly value the cost utility of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination strategies. This study was designed to measure the utility loss in health states affected by a broad range of HPV-induced pathologies in both sexes in Italy. As a secondary objective, risk factors influencing the viral transmission and development of HPV infections were also investigated. METHODS: Patients with a diagnosis of several HPV-induced pathologies including atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), cervical and anal-colorectal cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and anogenital warts (AWs) were evaluated. Utilities, quality of life, and risk factors were elicited using a standardized and computer-guided administration of time trade-off, European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions (EQ-5D), 3 levels, and risk factor questionnaires. Utilities were measured at 6 clinical research centers across Italy. A group of healthy subjects was used as a control. A mean number of 20 healthy subjects was used as a control for each pathology group. FINDINGS: Overall, 600 respondents were eligible for analysis: 465 patients (mean [SD] age, 44.0 [16.3] years) and 135 controls (mean [SD] age, 44.0 [13.2] years). With the exception of anal and HNSCC cancer, no statistically significant differences were observed between case and control groups, in terms of either age or quality of life at the time of interview. The patients' perception of their health condition at baseline was equal to an EQ-5D score of 0.87 (0.22). The mean (SD) value of utilities associated with the HPV-induced pathologies corresponded to 0.83 (0.24), 0.78 (0.27), 0.83 (0.22), 0.81 (0.27), 0.58 (0.31), 0.51 (0.26), and 0.69 (0.30) for ASC-US, AWs, CIN 1 (mild), CIN 2-3 (moderate to severe), cervical cancer, anal cancer and HNSCC, respectively. Utility lost due to AWs was significantly higher in females compared with males (0.71 [0.29] vs 0.83 [0.25]; P = 0.018). Having >5 sexual partners increased the risk of acquiring HPV-induced infections as much as 2.52-fold (P = 0.004), whereas for smoking or the age at start of sexual activity younger than 18 years, the risk increased by ~1.62-fold (P = 0.034). High levels of education were associated with a statistically significant protective effect (P < 0.001). IMPLICATIONS: Risk factors and utilities elicited in this study can be used as part of future economic assessments of other HPV vaccination strategies, including an immunization program for preadolescents of both sexes in Italy.

Abstract: The results of the measurements of the double-differential production cross-sections of pions, d(2)sigma(pi)/dpd Omega, in p-C and pi(+/-)-C interactions using the forward spectrometer of the HARP experiment are presented. The incident particles are 12 GeV/c protons and charged pions directed onto a carbon target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. For p-C interactions the analysis is performed using 100,035 reconstructed secondary tracks, while the corresponding numbers of tracks for pi(-)-C and pi(+)-C analyses are 106,534 and 10,122, respectively. Cross-section results are presented in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV/c

Abstract: The results of a leading-order QCD analysis of neutrino-induced charm production are presented. They are based on a sample of 4111 $\nu_\mu$ - and 871 $\bar \nu_\mu$ -induced opposite-sign dimuon events with $E_{\mu 1},E_{\mu 2} > 6{\rm GeV}$ , $35 < E_{\nu} < 290{\rm GeV}$ and $Q^2> 5.5\,{\rm GeV^2}$ , observed in the CHARM II detector exposed to the CERN wide band neutrino and antineutrino beams. The analysis yields the value of the charm quark mass $m_c=1.79\pm0.38\,{\rm GeV}/c^2$ and the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cd}|=0.219\pm0.016$ . The strange quark content of the nucleon is found to be suppressed with respect to non-strange sea quarks by a factor $\kappa =0.39\pm0.09$ .

Abstract: A precision measurement of the double-differential production cross-section, ${{d^2 \sigma^{\pi^+}}}/{{d p d\Omega}}$, for pions of positive charge, performed in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are protons of 12.9 GeV/c momentum impinging on an aluminium target of 5% nuclear interaction length. The measurement of this cross-section has a direct application to the calculation of the neutrino flux of the K2K experiment. After cuts, 210000 secondary tracks reconstructed in the forward spectrometer were used in this analysis. The results are given for secondaries within a momentum range from 0.75 GeV/c to 6.5 GeV/c, and within an angular range from 30 mrad to 210 mrad. The absolute normalization was performed using prescaled beam triggers counting protons on target. Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Measurements of double-differential charged pion production cross-sections in interactions of 12 GeV/c protons on O2 and N2 thin targets are presented in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV/c ≤ pπ < 8 GeV/c and 50 mrad ≤ θπ < 250 mrad (in the laboratory frame) and are compared with p-C results. For p-N2 (p-O2) interactions the analysis is performed using 38576 (7522) reconstructed secondary pions. The analysis uses the beam instrumentation and the forward spectrometer of the HARP experiment at CERN PS. The measured cross-sections have a direct impact on the precise calculation of atmospheric neutrino fluxes and on the improved reliability of extensive air shower simulations by reducing the uncertainties of hadronic interaction models in the low energy range. Abstract: The results of the measurements of the double-differential production cross-sections of pions, dσ/dpdΩ, in p C and π C interactions using the forward spectrometer of the HARP experiment are presented. The incident particles are 12 GeV/c protons and charged pions directed onto a carbon target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. For p C interactions the analysis is performed using 100,035 reconstructed secondary tracks, while the corresponding numbers of tracks for π C and π C analyses are 106,534 and 10,122, respectively. Cross-section results are presented in the kinematic range 0.5GeV/c⩽pπ
