We perform infrared conductivity measurements on a series of CaCuO$_2$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures made by the insulating cuprate CaCuO$_2$ (CCO) and the insulating perovkite SrTiO$_3$ (STO). We estimate the carrier density of various heterostructures, with different level of hole doping from the integral of the optical conductivity and we measure the corresponding degree of correlation by estimating the ratio between the Drude weight and the integral of the infrared spectrum. The analysis demonstrates a large degree of correlation, which increases as the doping is reduced. The experimental results can be reproduced by Dynamical Mean-Field Theory calculations which strongly support the role of correlations in the CCO/STO heterostructures and their similarities with the most common cuprate superconductors. Our results suggest that cuprate superconductors can be looked at as natural superlattices, where the properties of the CuO$_2$ conducting planes and charge reservoir blocks can be completely disentangled., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We report a study of the structural phase transitions induced by pressure in bulk black phosphorus by using both synchrotron x-ray diffraction for pressures up to 12.2 GPa and Raman spectroscopy up to 18.2 GPa. Very recently black phosphorus attracted large attention because of the unique properties of fewlayers samples (phosphorene), but some basic questions are still open in the case of the bulk system. As concerning the presence of a Raman spectrum above 10 GPa, which should not be observed in an elemental simple cubic system, we propose a new explanation by attributing a key role to the non-hydrostatic conditions occurring in Raman experiments. Finally, a combined analysis of Raman and XRD data allowed us to obtain quantitative information on presence and extent of coexistences between different structural phases from ~5 up to ~15 GPa. This information can have an important role in theoretical studies on pressure-induced structural and electronic phase transitions in black phosphorus.

In high Tc superconductors the magnetic and electronic properties are determined by the probability that valence electrons virtually jump from site to site in the CuO2 planes, a mechanism opposed by on-site Coulomb repulsion and favored by hopping integrals. The spatial extent of the latter is related to transport properties, including superconductivity, and to the dispersion relation of spin excitations (magnons). Here, for three antiferromagnetic parent compounds (single-layer Bi2Sr0.99La1.1CuO6+delta, double-layer Nd1.2Ba1.8Cu3O6 and infinite-layer CaCuO2) differing by the number of apical atoms, we compare the magnetic spectra measured by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering over a significant portion of the reciprocal space and with unprecedented accuracy. We observe that the absence of apical oxygens increases the in-plane hopping range and, in CaCuO2, it leads to a genuine 3D exchange-bond network. These results establish a corresponding relation between the exchange interactions and the crystal structure, and provide fresh insight into the materials dependence of the superconducting transition temperature., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 Table, 42 references

At interfaces between complex oxides it is possible to generate electronic systems with unusual electronic properties, which are not present in the isolated oxides. One important example is the appearance of superconductivity at the interface between insulating oxides, although, until now, with very low Tc. We report the occurrence of high Tc superconductivity in the bilayer CaCuO2/SrTiO3, where both the constituent oxides are insulating. In order to obtain a superconducting state, the CaCuO2/SrTiO3 interface must be realized between the Ca plane of CaCuO2 and the TiO2 plane of SrTiO3. Only in this case extra oxygen ions can be incorporated in the interface Ca plane, acting as apical oxygen for Cu and providing holes to the CuO2 planes. A detailed hole doping spatial profile has been obtained by STEM/EELS at the O K-edge, clearly showing that the (super)conductivity is confined to about 1-2 CaCuO2 unit cells close to the interface with SrTiO3. The results obtained for the CaCuO2/SrTiO3 interface can be extended to multilayered high Tc cuprates, contributing to explain the dependence of Tc on the number of CuO2 planes in these systems., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Raman spectra of CaCuO2/SrTiO3 superlattices show clear spectroscopic marker of two structures formed in CaCuO2 at the interface with SrTiO3. For non-superconducting superlattices, grown in low oxidizing atmosphere, the 425 cm-1 frequency of oxygen vibration in CuO2 planes is the same as for CCO films with infinite layer structure (planar Cu-O coordination). For superconducting superlattices grown in highly oxidizing atmosphere, a 60 cm-1 frequency shift to lower energy occurs. This is ascribed to a change from planar to pyramidal Cu-O coordination because of oxygen incorporation at the interface. Raman spectroscopy proves to be a powerful tool for interface structure investigation.

(CaCuO2)m/(La0.7Sr0.3MnO3)n superlattices, consisting of the infinite layers cuprate CaCuO2 and the optimally doped manganite La1-xSrxMnO3, were grown by pulsed laser deposition. The transport properties are dominated by the manganite block. X-Ray Absorption spectroscopy measurements show a clear evidence of an orbital reconstruction at the interface, ascribed to the hybridization between the Cu 3d3z2-r2 and the Mn 3d3z2-r2 orbitals via interface apical oxygen ions. Such a mechanism localizes holes at the interfaces, thus preventing charge transfer to the CaCuO2 block. Some charge (holes) transfer occurs toward the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 block in strongly oxidized superlattices, contributing to the suppression of the magnetotransport properties., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

We report experimental evidence for the phase diagram of doped cuprate superconductors as a function of the micro-strain (e) of the Cu-O bond length, measured by Cu K-edge EXAFS, and hole doping (d). This phase diagram shows a QCP at P(e*,d*) where for the micro-strain e larger than the critical value e* charge-orbital-spin stripes and free carriers co-exist. The superconducting phase occurs in the region of critical fluctuations around this QCP. The critical temperature is function of two variables and Tc shows its maximum at the strain driven QCP. The critical fluctuations near this strain QCP give the self-organization of a metallic superlattice of quantum wires "superstripes" that favors the amplification of the critical temperature., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We report the occurrence of superconductivity, with maximum Tc = 40 K, in superlattices (SLs) based on two insulating oxides, namely CaCuO2 and SrTiO3. In these (CaCuO2)n/(SrTiO3)m SLs, the CuO2 planes belong only to CaCuO2 block, which is an antiferromagnetic insulator. Superconductivity, confined within few unit cells at the CaCuO2/SrTiO3 interface, shows up only when the SLs are grown in a highly oxidizing atmosphere, because of extra oxygen ions entering at the interfaces. Evidence is reported that the hole doping of the CuO2 planes is obtained by charge transfer from the interface layers, which act as charge reservoir., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

The effect of pressure on the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda$ was tested in the hole-doped superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-d) and in the electron-doped one Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 by means of magnetization measurements. Whereas a large change of $\lambda$ was found in YBa2Cu3O(7-d), confirming the non-adiabatic character of the electron-phonon coupling in hole-doped superconductors, the same quantity is not affected by pressure in the electron-doped Sr0.9La0.1CuO2, suggesting a close similarity of the latter to conventional adiabatic BCS superconductors. The present results imply a remarkable difference between the electronic properties of hole-doped cuprates and the electron-doped Sr0.9La0.1CuO2, giving a strong contribution to the long debated asymmetric consequences of hole- and electron-doping in cuprate superconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Actor-Critic based approaches were among the first to address reinforcement learning in a general setting. Recently, these algorithms have gained renewed interest due to their generality, good convergence properties, and possible biological relevance. In this paper, we introduce an online temporal difference based actor-critic algorithm which is proved to converge to a neighborhood of a local maximum of the average reward. Linear function approximation is used by the critic in order estimate the value function, and the temporal difference signal, which is passed from the critic to the actor. The main distinguishing feature of the present convergence proof is that both the actor and the critic operate on a similar time scale, while in most current convergence proofs they are required to have very different time scales in order to converge. Moreover, the same temporal difference signal is used to update the parameters of both the actor and the critic. A limitation of the proposed approach, compared to results available for two time scale convergence, is that convergence is guaranteed only to a neighborhood of an optimal value, rather to an optimal value itself. The single time scale and identical temporal difference signal used by the actor and the critic, may provide a step towards constructing more biologically realistic models of reinforcement learning in the brain.

We measured the Raman and the Infrared phonon spectrum of SmFeAsO polycrystalline samples. We also performed Density Functional Theory calculations within the pseudopotential approximation to obtain the structural and dynamical lattice properties of both the SmFeAsO and the prototype LaFeAsO compounds. The measured Raman and Infrared phonon frequencies are well predicted by the optical phonon frequencies computed at the Gamma point, showing the capability of the employed ab-initio methods to describe the dynamical properties of these materials. A comparison among the phonon frequencies of different oxypnictides suggests a possible role of the high frequency phonons in the pairing mechanism leading to superconductivity in these materials., Comment: text file (.tex) and 2 figures (.eps)

The pressure effects on the JT distortion of three representative compounds belonging to the LaMn_1-xGa_xO_3 (x= 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) family was widely investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. A compound with a fully JT distorted structure (x=0.2), one with regular octahedra (x=0.6) and one in an intermediate configuration (x=0.3) were selected. A pressure induced transitions from the orthorhombic Pbnm phase towards structures with higher symmetry were observed in all the samples. Both Raman and X-ray data confirm that the most important structural effect of pressure is that of reducing the octahedral distortion. The appearance of a feature in the lattice parameter behavior connected to a structural instability was also detected, pointing out the key role of the JT distortion in stabilizing the manganite structures. On the other hand, the complete suppression of the JT distortion in the high-pressure phases cannot be claimed. The Raman spectra collected from more distorted compounds (x=0.2, 0.3) reveal clearly the coexistence of domains of distorted and more regular octahedra in a certain pressure range. We report on a Raman scattering investigation of the charge-density-wave (CDW), quasi two-dimensional rare-earth tri-tellurides $R$Te$_3$ ($R$= La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy) at ambient pressure, and of LaTe$_3$ and CeTe$_3$ under externally applied pressure. The observed phonon peaks can be ascribed to the Raman active modes for both the undistorted as well as the distorted lattice in the CDW state by means of a first principles calculation. The latter also predicts the Kohn anomaly in the phonon dispersion, driving the CDW transition. The integrated intensity of the two most prominent modes scales as a characteristic power of the CDW-gap amplitude upon compressing the lattice, which provides clear evidence for the tight coupling between the CDW condensate and the vibrational modes.

We report temperature- and magnetic field-dependent bulk muon spin rotation measurements in a c-axis oriented superconductor CaC6 in the mixed state. Using both a simple second moment analysis and the more precise analytical Ginzburg-Landau model, we obtained a field independent in-plane magnetic penetration depth {\lambda}ab (0) = 72(3) nm. The temperature dependencies of the normalized muon spin relaxation rate and of the normalized superfluid density result to be identical, and both are well represented by the clean limit BCS model with 2\Delta/kB Tc = 3.6(1), suggesting that CaC6 is a fully gapped BCS superconductor in the clean limit regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRB

We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth \lambda_{ab} in the infinite-layer electron-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductor Sr_0.9La_0.1CuO_2 by means of muon-spin rotation. The observed temperature and magnetic field dependences of \lambda_{ab} are consistent with the presence of a substantial s-wave component in the superconducting order parameter in good agreement with the results of tunneling, specific heat, and small-angle neutron scattering experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The optical response of the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ has been studied in the 0.7-4 THz range on films with very low impurity level. The effect of the high-energy $\sigma$-gap is observed in the ratio $R_S/R_N$ between the normal and superconducting state reflectance, while in a neutron irradiated film with a slightly higher impurity level mainly the effect of the $\pi$-gap is evident as reported in previous experiments. At terahertz frequencies, the electrodynamic of MgB$_2$ can be well described by the two-band parallel conductivity model and is dominated by the $\pi$-bands when the impurity level is only slightly higher than that of an ultra-clean sample., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The results of the muon-spin rotation experiments on BCS superconductors NbB_2+x (x = 0.2, 0.34) are reported. Both samples, studied in the present work, exhibit rather broad transitions to the superconducting state, suggesting a distribution of the volume fractions with different transition temperatures (T_c)'s. By taking these distributions into account, the dependence of the inverse squared zero-temperature magnetic penetration depth (\lambda_0^{-2}) on T_c was reconstructed for temperatures in the range 1.5K

Oxygen isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effects (OIE's) on the superconducting transition (T_c), the spin-glass ordering (T_g), and the antiferromagnetic ordering (T_N) temperatures were studied for Y_1-xPr_xBa_2Cu_3O_7-\delta as a function of Pr content (0.0\leq x \leq 1.0). The OIE on T_c increases with increasing x up to x\approx0.55, where superconductivity disappears. For decreasing x the OIE's on T_N and T_g increase down to x\approx 0.7 where antiferromagnetic order and down to x\approx0.3 where spin-glass behavior vanish, respectively. The OIE's on T_g and T_N are found to have {\it opposite signs} as compared to the OIE on T_c. All OIE's are suggested to arise from the isotope dependent mobility (kinetic energy) of the charge carriers., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth \lambda was measured for an untwined single crystal of YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} along the three principal crystallographic directions (a, b, and c). Both in-plane components (\lambda_a and \lambda_b) show an inflection point in their temperature dependence which is absent in the component along the c-direction (\lambda_c). The data provide convincing evidence that the in-plane superconducting order parameter is a mixture of s+d-wave symmetry whereas it is exclusively s-wave along the c-direction. In conjunction with previous results it is concluded that coupled s+d-order parameters are universal and intrinsic to cuprate superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The electrodynamics near the metal-to-insulator transitions (MIT) induced, in V3O5 single crystals, by both temperature (T) and pressure (P) has been studied by infrared spectroscopy. The T- and P-dependence of the optical conductivity may be explained within a polaronic scenario. The insulating phase at ambient T and P corresponds to strongly localized small polarons. Meanwhile the T-induced metallic phase at ambient pressure is related to a liquid of polarons showing incoherent dc transport, in the P-induced metallic phase at room T strongly localized polarons coexist with partially delocalized ones. The electronic spectral weight is almost recovered, in both the T and P induced metallization processes, on an energy scale of 1 eV, thus supporting the key-role of electron-lattice interaction in the V3O5 metal-to-insulator transition., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Raman and combined trasmission and reflectivity mid infrared measurements have been carried out on monoclinic VO$_2$ at room temperature over the 0-19 GPa and 0-14 GPa pressure ranges, respectively. The pressure dependence obtained for both lattice dynamics and optical gap shows a remarkable stability of the system up to P*$\sim$10 GPa. Evidence of subtle modifications of V ion arrangements within the monoclinic lattice together with the onset of a metallization process via band gap filling are observed for P$>$P*. Differently from ambient pressure, where the VO$_2$ metal phase is found only in conjunction with the rutile structure above 340 K, a new room temperature metallic phase coupled to a monoclinic structure appears accessible in the high pressure regime, thus opening to new important queries on the physics of VO$_2$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The magnetic field dependence of the oxygen-isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth \lambda_{ab} was studied in the hole-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductors YBa_2Cu_4O_8, Y_0.8Pr_0.2Ba_2Cu_3O_7-\delta, and Y_0.7Pr_0.3Ba_2Cu_3O_7-\delta. It was found that \lambda_ab for the ^{16}O substituted samples increases stronger with increasing magnetic field than for the ^{18}O ones. The OIE on \lambda_ab decreases by more than a factor of two with increasing magnetic field from \mu_0H=0.2 T to \mu_0H=0.6 T. This effect can be explained by the isotope dependence of the in-plane charge carrier mass m^\ast_{ab}., Comment: 4 pages, two figures

We carried out Raman measurements on neutron-irradiated and Al-doped MgB$_2$ samples. The irradiation-induced topological disorder causes an unexpected appearance of high frequency spectral structures, similar to those observed in lightly Al-doped samples. Our results show that disorder-induced violations of the selection rules are responsible for the modification of the Raman spectrum in both irradiated and Al-doped samples. Theoretical calculations of the phonon density of states support this hypothesis, and demonstrate that the high frequency structures arise mostly from contributions at ${\bf q}\not=0$ of the E$_{2g}$ phonon mode., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The reflectivity $R (\omega)$ of $ab$-oriented Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$(B$_{1-y }$C$_y$)$_2$ single crystals has been measured by means of infrared microspectroscopy for $1300<\omega<17000$ cm$^{-1}$. An increase with doping of the scattering rates in the $\pi$ and $\sigma$ bands is observed, being more pronounced in the C doped crystals. The $\sigma$-band plasma frequency also changes with doping due to the electron doping, while the $\pi$-band one is almost unchanged. Moreover, a $\sigma\to\sigma$ interband excitation, predicted by theory, is observed at $\omega_{IB} \simeq 0.47$ eV in the undoped sample, and shifts to lower energies with doping. By performing theoretical calculation of the doping dependence $\omega_{IB}$, the experimental observations can be explained with the increase with electron doping of the Fermi energy of the holes in the $\sigma$-band. On the other hand, the $\sigma$ band density of states seems not to change substantially. This points towards a $T_c$ reduction driven mainly by disorder, at least for the doping level studied here. The superconducting state has been also probed by infrared synchrotron radiation for $30<\omega<150$ cm$^{-1}$ in one pure and one C-doped sample. In the undoped sample ($T_c$ = 38.5 K) a signature of the $\pi$-gap only is observed. At $y$ = 0.08 ($T_c$ = 31.9 K), the presence of the contribution of the $\sigma$-gap indicates dirty-limit superconductivity in both bands., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Magnetization measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to 10.5 kbar in zirconium dodecaboride ZrB$_{12}$ superconductor ($T_c\simeq6.0$ K at $p=0$) were carried out. A negative pressure effect on $T_c$ with ${\rm d} T_c/{\rm d} p =-0.0225(3)$ K/kbar was observed. The electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda_{el-ph}$ decreases with increasing pressure with ${\rm d}\ln\lambda_{el-ph}/{\rm d}p\simeq-0.20$%/kbar. The magnetic field penetration depth $\lambda$ was studied in the Meissner state and, therefore, probes only the surface of the sample. The absolute values of $\lambda$ and the superconducting energy gap at ambient pressure and zero temperature were found to be $\lambda(0)=$140(30) nm and $\Delta_0=$1.251(9) meV, respectively. $\Delta_0$ scales linearly with $T_c$ as $2\Delta_0/k_BT_c=4.79(1)$. The studies of the pressure effect on $\lambda$ reveal that $\lambda^{-2}$ increases with pressure with ${\rm d}\ln\lambda^{-2}(0)/{\rm d}p=0.60(23)$ %/kbar. This effect can not be explained within the framework of conventional adiabatic electron-phonon pairing, suggesting that close to the surface, an unconventional {\it non-adiabatic} character of the electron-phonon coupling takes place., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We prepared a series of Mg_{1-x}(AlLi)_{x}B_2 samples with 0≤x≤0.45 in order to compensate with Li the electron doping induced by Al. Structural characterization by means of neutron and X-ray diffraction confirms that Li enters the MgB2 structure even though in an amount less than nominal one. We performed susceptibility, resistivity and specific heat measurements. Vibrational properties were also investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy. We compare these results with those obtained on a homologous series of Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_2 samples. Muon spin rotation (mSR) measurements of the in-plane penetration depth lambda_ab have been performed in the electron-doped infinite layer high-Tc superconductor (HTS) Sr0.9La0.1CuO2. Absence of the magnetic rare-earth ions in this compound allowed to measure for the first time the absolute value of lambda_ab(0) in electron-doped HTS using mSR. We found lambda_ab(0)=116(2) nm. The zero-temperature depolarization rate sigma(0)?1/lambda_ab(0)^2=4.6(1) MHz is more than four times higher than expected from the Uemura line. Therefore this electron-doped HTS does not follow the Uemura relation found for hole-doped HTS., Comment: to be published in Physical Review Letters

We analyze the data for the pressure and boron isotope effect on the temperature dependence of the magnetization near $T_{c}$. Invoking the universal scaling relation for the magnetization at fixed magnetic field it is shown that the relative shift of $T_{c}$, induced by pressure or boron isotope exchange, mirrors essentially that of the anisotropy. This uncovers a novel generic property of anisotropic type II superconductors, inexistent in the isotropic case. For MgB$_{2}$ it implies that the renormalization of the Fermi surface topology due to pressure or isotope exchange is dominated by a mechanism controlling the anisotropy., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

A study of the pressure effect on the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda$ in polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ was performed by measuring the temperature dependence of the magnetization under an applied pressure of 0.15 and 1.13 GPa. We found that $\lambda^{-2}$ at low temperature is only slightly affected by pressure [$\frac{\Delta \lambda^{-2}}{\lambda^{-2}} = 1.5(9)%$], in contrast to cuprate superconductors, where, in the same range of pressure, a very large effect on $\lambda^{-2}$ was found. Theoretical estimates indicate that most of the pressure effect on $\lambda^{-2}$ in MgB$_2$ arises from the electron-phonon interaction., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth \lambda in the pyrochlore superconductor RbOs_2O_6 (T_c\simeq6.3 K) were carried out by means of the muon-spin-rotation (\muSR) technique. At low temperatures \lambda^{-2}(T) saturates and becomes constant below T\simeq 0.2T_c, in agreement with what is expected for weak-coupled s-wave BCS superconductors. The value of \lambda at T=0 was found to be in the range of 250 nm to 300 nm. \muSR and equilibrium magnetization measurements both reveal that at low temperatures $\lambda$ is almost (at the level of 10%) independent of the applied magnetic field. This result suggests that the superconducting energy gap in RbOs_2O_6 is isotropic., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The effects of Al substitution and neutron irradiation on the conduction regime (clean or dirty) of the $\pi$- and $\sigma$-band of MgB$_{2}$ have been investigated by means of far-infrared spectroscopy. The intensity reflected by well characterized polycrystalline samples was measured up to 100 cm$^{- 1}$ in both normal and superconducting state. The analysis of the superconducting to normal reflectivity ratios shows that only the effect of the opening of the small gap in the dirty $\pi$-band can be clearly observed in pure MgB$_{2}$, consistently with previous results. In Al-doped samples the dirty character of the $\pi$-band is increased, while no definitive conclusion on the conduction regime of the $\sigma $-band can be drawn. On the contrary, results obtained for the irradiated sample show that the irradiation-induced disorder drives the $\sigma$-band in the dirty regime, making the large gap in $\sigma$-band observable for the first time in far-infrared measurements., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

Magnetization and muon spin relaxation on MgB2 were measured as a function of field at 2 K. Both indicate an inverse-squared penetration depth strongly decreasing with increasing field H below about 1 T. Magnetization also suggests the anisotropy of the penetration depth to increase with increasing H, interpolating between a low Hc1 and a high Hc2 anisotropy. Torque vs angle measurements are in agreement with this finding, while also ruling out drastic differences between the mixed state anisotropies of the two basic length scales penetration depth and coherence length., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report on a systematic finite size scaling analysis of in-plane penetration depth data taken on Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ epitaxially-grown films and single crystals, and of in-plane and out of plane data taken on YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.7}$ aligned powder. It is shown that the tails in temperature dependence of the penetration depths, appearing around the transition temperature, are fully consistent with a finite size effect. This uncovers the granular nature of these cuprates, consisting of superconducting homogeneous domains of nanoscale extent, embedded in a non-superconducting matrix., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(0)$ in polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ for different boron isotopes ($^{10}$B/$^{11}$B) was investigated by transverse field muon spin rotation. No boron isotope effect on the penetration depth $\lambda(0)$ was found within experimental error: $\Delta\lambda(0)/\lambda(0) = -0.8(8)%$, suggesting that MgB$_{2}$ is an adiabatic superconductor. This is in contrast to the substantial oxygen isotope effect on $\lambda(0)$ observed in cuprate high-temperature superconductors., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Anisotropic properties of superconducting MgB2 obtained by torque magnetometry are compared to theoretical predictions, concentrating on two issues. Firstly, the angular dependence of Hc2 is shown to deviate close to Tc from the dependence assumed by anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory. We have studied the variation of Tc with charge density and lattice parameters in Mg1-xAlxB2 superconducting samples at low Al doping x<8%. We show that high Tc occurs where the chemical potential is tuned at a "superconducting shape resonance" near the energy Ec of the quantum critical point (QCP) for the dimensional transition from 2D to 3D electronic structure in a particular subband of the natural superlattice of metallic atomic boron layers. At the "shape resonance" the electrons pairs see a 2D Fermi surface at EF-w0 and a 3D Fermi surface at EF+wo, where wo is the energy cut off of the pairing interaction. The resonant amplification occurs in a narrow energy range where EF-Ec is in the range of 2wo., Comment: 16 pages

We report variation of lattice structure in diborides (AB2) with different A atoms to identify the special case of MgB2 showing high Tc superconductivity. High purity MgB2 (Tc~39 K) has been prepared by direct reaction of the elements and the lattice parameters are measured by x-ray diffraction determining the strain e of the B-B distance. The results show that the superconductivity in these intermetallics appear near a critical point in a two variables (strain and charge density) phase diagram at (ec, rc)., Comment: 10 pages
