Abstract Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs) are increasingly common in freshwater ecosystems and are often associated with climate change. Here, we used two independent high‐resolution surface temperature records (1995–2022) and temperature‐dependent growth rates of Microcystis to evaluate changes in these CHABs in Lake Erie. The potential mean seasonal growth rate of Microcystis and the duration of the Microcystis bloom season have both significantly increased within the western basin of Lake Erie since 1995. Trends were strongest in the far western region of Lake Erie including Maumee Bay which receives the largest point source of nutrients in the Lake and where the Microcystis bloom season has expanded by up to 1 month. In contrast, warming trends in bloom‐free portions of central and eastern Lake Erie have been more muted. We conclude that increasing water temperature is an important factor facilitating the intensification of these, and likely other, CHABs, and is thus promoting an expanding public health threat.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood disorder characterized by abnormal hemoglobin, leading to the sickle shape of red blood cells. It has several vascular complications and the cerebrovascular ones are among the most frequent and severe both in children and in adults. This review summarizes the main neurovascular manifestations of SCD, including acute stroke, silent cerebral infarction, large-vessel diseases (moyamoya arteriopathy and aneurysms), and brain bleeding. Both epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment issues are addressed and prevention of cerebrovascular events, including silent cerebral infarctions, is particularly relevant in SCD patients, being associated to poor functional outcome and cognitive complaints. Transfusions and hydroxyurea are the main available therapy at the moment, but contraindications, availability, and complications might prevent their long term use, particularly in low-income countries. The role of transcranial Doppler in monitoring the patients (mainly children) is analyzed and a practical approach has been selected in order to give the main messages from the current literature for a better management of SCD patients.

In contemporary Italian cities, volunteer asylum seekers help to clean up parks, streets and pavements, while at the same time being targeted by repressive policies aimed at the “undesirable” users of these same spaces. In this article, I examine this apparent paradox in order to understand how the visibility of asylum-seeking volunteers is managed in Italian public spaces. The study of volunteer programmes in two northern Italian cities invites us to link the requalification of public spaces, the ways in which minority populations are put to work, and the processes of visibilisation-invisibilisation at work. By exploring the ways in which the visibility of volunteer sweepers and waste collectors is brought into play in the redesign of public spaces, it becomes possible to investigate how the assignment of these individuals to specific social categories is re-actualised in and through space.

Studying the evolution of seed morphology and, in turn, the evolution of cultivars across time and space is of fundamental importance to agriculture and archaeology. The identification of ancient and modern grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars is essential for understanding the historical evolution of grape cultivation. Grape seed morphology provides valuable information to explore the evolution of grape cultivars over time and space. The main aim of our study was to build a comprehensive regional database of grape seed morphological traits from modern and archaeological wine cultivars and wild grape species. We aimed to identify which seeds of modern grape cultivars exhibited morphological similarities to archaeological cultivars. This study focused on fifteen distinct modern types of seeds and two archaeological samples from the Byzantine-to-Early Medieval period. We acquired digital images of seeds using a flatbed scanner. For each sample, 100 seeds were randomly selected, and morphometric data on each seed were gathered using ImageJ. Differences among the seed cultivars were investigated using linear discriminant analysis. Archaeological seeds were found to be more similar to cultivated V. vinifera cultivars rather than V. sylvestris populations. Among the cultivated cultivars, Sangiovese and Tosta antica resulted to be cultivars most similar cultivars to the archaeological ones. The morphometric analysis of grape seeds proved to be a valuable resource for investigating the evolution of vine cultivars throughout history. Combining image analysis techniques with genetic data will open new perspectives for studying the origins of and variations in grape cultivars, contributing to the conservation and enhancement of viticultural heritage.

Caterpillars (larval Lepidoptera) are an essential link in trophic networks of forest ecosystems, as they serve as herbivores of vegetation and a food source for many organisms. Phenological mismatches between caterpillars, host plants, or predators may have negative effects across multiple trophic levels. Seasonal timing of caterpillar emergence and peak occurrence may be impacted by climate change, however, studying caterpillar phenology at broad spatial scales is challenging due to lack of data availability. Here, we examine two sources of caterpillar observations, opportunistic records from iNaturalist and structured surveys of forest caterpillars, and compare whether phenology patterns in these datasets are consistent across larval datasets and with more numerous records of adult butterflies. Despite substantial taxonomic differences between these three datasets, we found concurrence in patterns of early and late years in spring onset between datasets. However, the datasets do differ in how well they capture phenological responses to warmer spring temperatures. More data-rich iNaturalist caterpillar and adult butterfly records may provide a reasonable proxy of interannual deviations in forest caterpillars, however, expansions in structured survey efforts are needed to capture changing patterns in other ecologically important measures such as abundance and biomass.

Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0-5 and 5-15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Nevertheless, we highlight the need to fill remaining geographic gaps by collecting more in situ measurements of microclimate conditions to further enhance the spatiotemporal resolution of global soil temperature products for ecological applications.

ABSTRACTThis paper presents the results of the 2021 and 2022 field activities carried out at San Nicola Island (Tremiti Islands, Southern Adriatic Sea) by two groups of students as part of the Environmental Geomorphology Field Mapping course held within the Master's Degree in Geological Sciences and Technologies of Earth and Planets at University ‘G. d'Annunzio’ of Chieti-Pescara. Field activities were carried out following an integrated approach that involved morphometric, geological, and geomorphological analyses, supported by the combination of traditional methods with modern survey instruments and techniques. The Main Map (1:2,500 scale) comprehensively depicts the landscape of San Nicola Island, which is affected by both long- and short-term evolutionary processes, as witnessed by widespread slope landforms. The cartographic products presented in this work can represent a useful tool in territorial planning and management, as well as a valuable base for further scientific studies.

Primary Angiitis of the Central Nervous System (PACNS) is a rare disease and its diagnosis is a challenge for several reasons, including the lack of specificity of the main findings highlighted in the current diagnostic criteria. Among the neuroimaging pattern of PACNS, a tumefactive form (t-PACNS) is a rare subtype and its differential diagnosis mainly relies on neuroimaging. Tumor-like mass lesions in the brain are a heterogeneous category including tumors (in particular, primary brain tumors such as glial tumors and lymphoma), inflammatory (e.g., t-PACNS, tumefactive demyelinating lesions, and neurosarcoidosis), and infectious diseases (e.g., neurotoxoplasmosis). In this review, the main features of t-PACNS are addressed and the main differential diagnoses from a neuroimaging perspective (mainly Magnetic Resonance Imaging—MRI—techniques) are described, including conventional and advanced MRI.

Seminatural grasslands are among the most threatened habitats in Europe and worldwide, mainly due to changes in/abandonment of their traditional extensive use by grazing animals. This study aimed to develop an innovative model that integrates plant biodiversity, animal husbandry, and geo-informatics to manage and preserve seminatural grasslands in protected areas. With this objective, an integrated study was conducted on the seminatural grasslands in the hilly, montane, and (to a minimum extent) subalpine belts of the Maiella National Park, one of Europe’s most biodiversity-rich protected sites. Plant biodiversity was investigated through 141 phytosociological relevés in homogeneous areas; the pastoral value was calculated, and grasslands’ productivity was measured together with the main nutritional parameters. Uni- and multivariate statistical analyses were performed to identify the main grassland vegetation types, their indicator species and ecological–environmental characteristics, and their pastoral and nutritional values’ variability and differences. A total of 17 grassland types, most of which correspond to habitat types listed in Annex I to the 92/43/EEC Directive, were identified and characterised in terms of their biodiversity and potential animal load. To allow for near-real-time analysis of grasslands, an NDVI-based web interface running on Google Earth Engine was implemented. This integrated approach can provide decision-making support for protected-area managers seeking to develop and implement sustainable grassland management practices that ensure the long-term maintenance of their biodiversity.

Background: Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of skeletal diseases characterized by epiphyseal abnormalities associated with mild short stature. The clinical variability is wide, and the first clinical manifestations still occur in childhood with joint pain and stiffness that evolve into degenerative joint disease. MED, caused by mutations in the Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein (COMP) gene, is the most common form of the disease. COMP-MED usually shows significant involvement of the capital femoral epiphyses and irregular acetabulum; instead, COL9A1-, COL9A2-, and COL9A3-MED appear to have more severe knee involvement than hips, resulting in a milder presentation than COMP-MED cases. Other complications have been reported, in particular osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), which has been described in two large COL9A2-related MED families associated with myopathy. Methods: Here, we report the case of a 24-year-old man affected by COMP-MED with a positive family history for the disease and a clinical presentation that interestingly is characterized by the presence of multiple OCD. Results: To our knowledge, this is the first case of COMP mutations related to multiple OCD as the main clinical feature. Conclusions: This report can expand the clinical phenotype related to the pathogenic variants of the COMP gene, as it shows that multiple OCD can also be present in COMP-related MED as well as in COL9A2-related MED. This paper outlines a multi-system approach for ground-based optical observations and the characterization of satellites in geostationary orbit. This multi-system approach is based on an in-depth analysis of the key factors to consider for light curve analysis of Earth’s orbiting satellites. Light curves have been observed in different spectral bands using two different systems. The first system is specialized for astronomical observations and consists of a telescope equipped with an sCMOS camera and Sloan photometric filters. In contrast, the second system is a more cost-effective solution designed for professional non-astronomical applications, incorporating DSLR cameras equipped with RGB channels associated with a Bayer mask and photographic lenses. This comparative analysis aims to highlight the differences and advantages provided by each system, stressing their respective performance characteristics. The observed light curves will be presented as a function of the phase angle, which depends on the relative positions of the observer, the object, and the Sun. This angle plays an important role in optimizing the visibility of Earth’s orbiting satellites. Finally, multiband observations of different satellites will be compared to seek an associated spectral signature, which may allow the identification of structurally similar objects through optical observations.

The Majella National Park (MNP) is a tangible example of the interaction between ex-situ and in-situ conservation of endemic, rare, or endangered species at a Regional level in the context of the Italian national parks. The MNP has the facilities and carries out activities for the conservation of plant biodiversity: it includes botanical gardens, a seed bank, a nursery, and a network of “guardian farmers”, an authentic “granary” in which to protect and conserve biodiversity in and around the Majella massif (central Italy).
