Search

The intrinsic variability due to the magnetic activity of young active stars is one of the main challenges in detecting and characterising exoplanets. We present a method able to model the stellar photosphere and its surface inhomogeneities (starspots) in young/active and fast-rotating stars, based on the cross-correlation function (CCF) technique, to extract information about the spot configuration of the star. Within the Global Architecture of Planetary Systems (GAPS) Project at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we analysed more than 300 spectra of the young planet-hosting star V1298 Tau provided by HARPS-N high-resolution spectrograph. By applying the SpotCCF model to the CCFs we extracted the spot configuration (latitude, longitude and projected filling factor) of this star, and also provided the new RVs time series of this target. We find that the features identified in the CCF profiles of V1298 Tau are modulated by the stellar rotation, supporting our assumption that they are caused by starspots. The analysis suggests a differential rotation velocity of the star with lower rotation at higher latitudes. Also, we find that SpotCCF provides an improvement in RVs extraction with a significantly lower dispersion with respect to the commonly used pipelines, with consequent mitigation of the stellar activity contribution modulated with stellar rotation. A detection sensitivity test, by the direct injection of a planetary signal into the data, confirmed that the SpotCCF model improves the sensitivity and ability to recover planetary signals. Our method enables the modelling of the stellar photosphere, extracting the spot configuration of young/active and rapidly rotating stars. We present the characterisation of the two transiting planets around HD 152843 (TOI 2319, TIC 349488688) using an intensive campaign of HARPS-N radial velocities, and two sectors of TESS data. These data reveal a unique and fascinating system: HD 152843 b and c have near equal masses of around 9 M$_\oplus$ but differing radii of $3.05 \pm 0.11$ R$_\oplus$ and $5.94^{+0.18}_{-0.16}$ R$_\oplus$ , respectively, and orbital periods of $11.62071^{+9.6e-05}_{-0.000106}$ days and $19.502104^{+7.4e-05}_{-8.5e-05}$ days. This indicates that HD 152843 c is in the lowest fifth percentile in density of the known exoplanet population, and has the longest orbital period among these low density planets. Further, HD 152843 c's radius places it in the Saturn valley, the observed lack of planets larger than Neptune, but smaller than Saturn. The orbital periods of these planets indicate they are near a 5:3 mean motion resonance, indicating the possibility of transit timing variations, and hints at the possibility of interaction with a third planet at some point in the evolution of this system. The Rocky Planet Search (RPS) program is dedicated to a blind radial velocity (RV) search of planets around bright stars in the Northern hemisphere, using the high-resolution echelle spectrograph HARPS-N installed on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). The goal of this work is to revise and update the properties of three planetary systems by analysing the HARPS-N data with state-of-the-art stellar activity mitigation tools. The stars considered are HD 99492 (83Leo B), HD 147379 (Gl617 A) and HD 190007. We employ a systematic process of data modelling, that we selected from the comparison of different approaches. We use YARARA to remove instrumental systematics from the RV, and then use SPLEAF to further mitigate the stellar noise with a multidimensional correlated noise model. We also search for transit features in the Transiting Exoplanets Survey Satellite (TESS) data of these stars. We report on the discovery of a new planet around HD 99492, namely HD 99492 c, with an orbital period of 95.2 days and a minimum mass of msin i = 17.9 M_Earth, and refine the parameters of HD 99492 b. We also update and refine the Keplerian solutions for the planets around HD 147379 and HD 190007, but do not detect additional planetary signals. We discard the transiting geometry for the planets, but stress that TESS did not exhaustively cover all the orbital phases. The addition of the HARPS-N data, and the use of advanced data analysis tools, has allowed us to present a more precise view of these three planetary systems. It demonstrates once again the importance of long observational efforts such as the RPS program. Added to the RV exoplanet sample, these planets populate two apparently distinct populations revealed by a bimodality in the planets minimum mass distribution. Much remains to be understood about the nature of exoplanets smaller than Neptune, most of which have been discovered in compact multi-planet systems. With its inner ultra-short period planet b aligned with the star and two larger outer planets d-c on polar orbits, the multi-planet system HD 3167 features a peculiar architecture and offers the possibility to investigate both dynamical and atmospheric evolution processes. To this purpose we combined multiple datasets of transit photometry and radial velocimetry (RV) to revise the properties of the system and inform models of its planets. This effort was spearheaded by CHEOPS observations of HD 3167b, which appear inconsistent with a purely rocky composition despite its extreme irradiation. Overall the precision on the planetary orbital periods are improved by an order of magnitude, and the uncertainties on the densities of the transiting planets b and c are decreased by a factor of 3. Internal structure and atmospheric simulations draw a contrasting picture between HD 3167d, likely a rocky super-Earth that lost its atmosphere through photo-evaporation, and HD 3167c, a mini-Neptune that kept a substantial primordial gaseous envelope. We detect a fourth, more massive planet on a larger orbit, likely coplanar with HD 3167d-c. Dynamical simulations indeed show that the outer planetary system d-c-e was tilted, as a whole, early in the system history, when HD 3167b was still dominated by the star influence and maintained its aligned orbit. RV data and direct imaging rule out that the companion that could be responsible for the present-day architecture is still bound to the HD\,3167 system. Aim: We aim to refine the orbital and physical parameters and determine the sky-projected planet orbital obliquity of five eccentric transiting planetary systems: HAT-P-15, HAT-P-17, HAT-P-21, HAT-P-26, and HAT-P-29. Each of the systems hosts a hot Jupiter, except for HAT-P-26 which hosts a Neptune-mass planet. Methods: We observed transit events of these planets with the HARPS-N spectrograph, obtaining high-precision radial velocity measurements that allow us to measure the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for each of the target systems. We used these new HARPS-N spectra and archival data, including those from Gaia, to better characterise the stellar atmospheric parameters. The photometric parameters for four of the hot Jupiters were recalculated using 17 new transit light curves, obtained with an array of medium-class telescopes, and data from the TESS space telescope. HATNet time-series photometric data were checked for the signatures of rotation periods of the target stars and their spin axis inclination. Results: From the analysis of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, we derived a sky-projected obliquity of 13, -26.3, -0.7, -26 degree for HAT-P-15b, HAT-P-17b, HAT-P-21b and HAT-P-29b, respectively. Due to the quality of the data, we were not able to well constrain the sky-projected obliquity for HAT-P-26b, although a prograde orbit is favoured. The stellar activity of HAT-P-21 indicates a rotation period of 15.88 days, which allowed us to determine its true misalignment angle (25 degree). Our new analysis of the physical parameters of the five exoplanetary systems returned values compatible with those existing in the literature. Using TESS and the available transit light curves, we reviewed the orbital ephemeris for the five systems and confirmed that the HAT-P-26 system shows transit timing variations, which may tentatively be attributed to the presence of a third body., Comment: 31 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

[abridged] We analyse four transits of WASP-33b observed with the optical high-resolution HARPS-N spectrograph to confirm its nodal precession, study its atmosphere and investigate the presence of star-planet interactions.We extract the mean line profiles of the spectra by using the LSD method, and analyse the Doppler shadow and the RVs. We also derive the transmission spectrum of the planet, correcting it for the stellar contamination due to rotation, CLV and pulsations. We confirm the previously discovered nodal precession of WASP-33b, almost doubling the time coverage of the inclination and projected spin-orbit angle variation. We find that the projected obliquity reached a minimum in 2011 and use this constraint to derive the geometry of the system, in particular its obliquity at that epoch ($\epsilon=113.99^{\circ}\pm 0.22^{\circ}$) and the inclination of the stellar spin axis ($i_{\rm s}=90.11^{\circ}\pm 0.12^{\circ}$), as well as the gravitational quadrupole moment of the star $J_2=(6.73\pm 0.22)\times 10^{-5}$. We present detections of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ absorption in the atmosphere of the planet with a contrast almost twice smaller than previously detected in the literature. We also find evidence for the presence of a pre-transit signal, which repeats in all four analysed transits. The most likely explanation lies in a possible excitation of a stellar pulsation mode by the presence of the planetary companion. Future common analysis of all available datasets in the literature will help shedding light on the possibility that the observed Balmer lines transit depth variations are related to stellar activity and/or pulsation, and to set constraints on the energetics possibly driving atmospheric escape. A complete orbital phase coverage of WASP-33b with high-resolution spectroscopic (spectro-polarimetric) observations could help understanding the nature of the pre-transit signal., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Studies of close-in planets orbiting M dwarfs have suggested that the M dwarf radius valley may be well-explained by distinct formation timescales between enveloped terrestrials, and rocky planets that form at late times in a gas-depleted environment. This scenario is at odds with the picture that close-in rocky planets form with a primordial gaseous envelope that is subsequently stripped away by some thermally-driven mass loss process. These two physical scenarios make unique predictions of the rocky/enveloped transition's dependence on orbital separation such that studying the compositions of planets within the M dwarf radius valley may be able to establish the dominant physics. Here, we present the discovery of one such keystone planet: the ultra-short period planet TOI-1634 b ($P=0.989$ days, $F=121 F_{\oplus}$, $r_p = 1.790^{+0.080}_{-0.081} R_{\oplus}$) orbiting a nearby M2 dwarf ($K_s=8.7$, $R_s=0.45 R_{\odot}$, $M_s=0.50 M_{\odot}$) and whose size and orbital period sit within the M dwarf radius valley. We confirm the TESS-discovered planet candidate using extensive ground-based follow-up campaigns, including a set of 32 precise radial velocity measurements from HARPS-N. We measure a planetary mass of $4.91^{+0.68}_{-0.70} M_{\oplus}$, which makes TOI-1634 b inconsistent with an Earth-like composition at $5.9\sigma$ and thus requires either an extended gaseous envelope, a large volatile-rich layer, or a rocky portion that is not dominated by iron and silicates to explain its mass and radius. The discovery that the bulk composition of TOI-1634 b is inconsistent with that of the Earth favors the gas-depleted formation mechanism to explain the emergence of the radius valley around M dwarfs with $M_s\lesssim 0.5 M_{\odot}$., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, accepted to AAS journals. Based on HARPS-N radial velocities (RVs) and TESS photometry, we present a full characterisation of the planetary system orbiting the late G dwarf TOI-561. After the identification of three transiting candidates by TESS, we discovered two additional external planets from RV analysis. RVs cannot confirm the outer TESS transiting candidate, which would also make the system dynamically unstable. We demonstrate that the two transits initially associated with this candidate are instead due to single transits of the two planets discovered using RVs. The four planets orbiting TOI-561 include an ultra-short period (USP) super-Earth (TOI-561 b) with period $P_{\rm b} = 0.45$ d, mass $M_{\rm b} =1.59 \pm 0.36$ M$_\oplus$ and radius $R_{\rm b}=1.42 \pm 0.07$ R$_\oplus$, and three mini-Neptunes: TOI-561 c, with $P_{\rm c} = 10.78$ d, $M_{\rm c} = 5.40 \pm 0.98$ M$_\oplus$, $R_{\rm c}= 2.88 \pm 0.09$ R$_\oplus$; TOI-561 d, with $P_{\rm d} = 25.6$ d, $M_{\rm d} = 11.9 \pm 1.3$ M$_\oplus$, $R_{\rm d} = 2.53 \pm 0.13$ R$_\oplus$; and TOI-561 e, with $P_{\rm e} = 77.2$ d, $M_{\rm e} = 16.0 \pm 2.3$ M$_\oplus$, $R_{\rm e} = 2.67 \pm 0.11$ R$_\oplus$. Having a density of $3.0 \pm 0.8$ g cm$^{-3}$, TOI-561 b is the lowest density USP planet known to date. Our N-body simulations confirm the stability of the system and predict a strong, anti-correlated, long-term transit time variation signal between planets d and e. The unusual density of the inner super-Earth and the dynamical interactions between the outer planets make TOI-561 an interesting follow-up target., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. We present the first detection of atomic emission lines from the atmosphere of an exoplanet. We detect neutral iron lines from the day-side of KELT-9b (Teq $\sim$ 4, 000 K). We combined thousands of spectrally resolved lines observed during one night with the HARPS-N spectrograph (R $\sim$ 115, 000), mounted at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. We introduce a novel statistical approach to extract the planetary parameters from the binary mask cross-correlation analysis. We also adapt the concept of contribution function to the context of high spectral resolution observations, to identify the location in the planetary atmosphere where the detected emission originates. The average planetary line profile intersected by a stellar G2 binary mask was found in emission with a contrast of 84 $\pm$ 14 ppm relative to the planetary plus stellar continuum (40 $\pm$ 5$\%$ relative to the planetary continuum only). This result unambiguously indicates the presence of an atmospheric thermal inversion. Finally, assuming a modelled temperature profile previously published (Lothringer et al. 2018), we show that an iron abundance consistent with a few times the stellar value explains the data well. Context. Pluto's tenuous nitrogen (N2) atmosphere undergoes strong seasonal effects due to high obliquity and orbital eccentricity, and has been recently (July 2015) observed by the New Horizons spacecraft. Goals are (i) construct a well calibrated record of the seasonal evolution of surface pressure on Pluto and (ii) constrain the structure of the lower atmosphere using a central flash observed in 2015. Method: eleven stellar occultations by Pluto observed between 2002 and 2016 are used to retrieve atmospheric profiles (density, pressure, temperature) between $\sim$5 km and $\sim$380 km altitude levels (i.e. pressures from about 10 microbar to 10 nanobar). Results: (i) Pressure has suffered a monotonic increase from 1988 to 2016, that is compared to a seasonal volatile transport model, from which tight constraints on a combination of albedo and emissivity of N2 ice are derived; (ii) A central flash observed on 2015 June 29 is consistent with New Horizons REX profiles, provided that (a) large diurnal temperature variations (not expected by current models) occur over Sputnik Planitia and/or (b) hazes with tangential optical depth of about 0.3 are present at 4-7 km altitude levels and/or (c) the nominal REX density values are overestimated by an implausibly large factor of about 20% and/or (d) higher terrains block part of the flash in the Charon facing hemisphere., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

Statistical studies of exoplanets have shown that giant planets are more commonly hosted by metal-rich dwarf stars than low-metallicity ones, while such a correlation is not evident for lower-mass planets. The search for giant planets around metal-poor stars and the estimate of their occurrence $f_p$ is an important element in providing support to models of planet formation. We present results from the HARPS-N search for giant planets orbiting metal-poor ($-1.0\leq[Fe/H]\leq-0.5$ dex) stars in the northern hemisphere complementing a previous HARPS survey on southern stars in order to update the estimate of $f_p$. High-precision HARPS-N observations of 42 metal-poor stars are used to search for planetary signals to be fitted using differential evolution MCMC single-Keplerian models. We then join our detections to the results of the previous HARPS survey on 88 metal-poor stars to provide a preliminar estimate of the two-hemisphere $f_p$. We report the detection of two new giant planets around HD 220197 and HD 233832. The first companion has M$\sin{i}=0.20_{-0.04}^{+0.07}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$ and orbital period of $1728_{-80}^{+162}$ days, and for the second companion we find two solutions of equal statistical weight having periods $2058_{-40}^{+47}$ and $4047_{-117}^{+91}$ days and minimum masses of $1.78_{-0.06}^{+0.08}$ and $2.72_{-0.23}^{+0.23}$ M$_{\rm Jup}$, respectively. Joining our two detections with the three from the southern survey we obtain a preliminary and conservative estimate of global frequency of $f_p=3.84_{-1.06}^{+2.45}\%$ for giant planets around metal-poor stars. The two new giant planets orbit dwarf stars at the metal-rich end of the HARPS-N metal-poor sample, corroborating previous results suggesting that giant planet frequency still is a rising function of host star [Fe/H]. M-dwarf stars are promising targets for identifying and characterizing potentially habitable planets. K2-3 is a nearby (45 pc), early-type M dwarf hosting three small transiting planets, the outermost of which orbits close to the inner edge of the stellar (optimistic) habitable zone. The K2-3 system is well suited for follow-up characterization studies aimed at determining accurate masses and bulk densities of the three planets. Using a total of 329 radial velocity measurements collected over 2.5 years with the HARPS-N and HARPS spectrographs and a proper treatment of the stellar activity signal, we aim to improve measurements of the masses and bulk densities of the K2-3 planets. We use our results to investigate the physical structure of the planets. We analyse radial velocity time series extracted with two independent pipelines by using Gaussian process regression. We adopt a quasi-periodic kernel to model the stellar magnetic activity jointly with the planetary signals. We use Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the robustness of our mass measurements of K2-3\,c and K2-3\,d, and to explore how additional high-cadence radial velocity observations might improve them. Despite the stellar activity component being the strongest signal present in the radial velocity time series, we are able to derive masses for both planet b ($M_{\rm b}=6.6\pm1.1$ $M_{\rm \oplus}$) and planet c ($M_{\rm c}=3.1^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$ $M_{\rm \oplus}$). The Doppler signal due to K2-3\,d remains undetected, likely because of its low amplitude compared to the radial velocity signal induced by the stellar activity. The closeness of the orbital period of K2-3\,d to the stellar rotation period could also make the detection of the planetary signal complicated. Weakly magnetic, millisecond spinning neutron stars attain their very fast rotation through a 1E8-1E9 yr long phase during which they undergo disk-accretion of matter from a low mass companion star. They can be detected as accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars if towards the end of this phase their magnetic field is still strong enough to channel the accreting matter towards the magnetic poles. When mass transfer is much reduced or ceases altogether, pulsed emission generated by particle acceleration in the magnetosphere and powered by the rotation of the neutron star is observed, preferentially in the radio and gamma-ray bands. A few transitional millisecond pulsars that swing between an accretion-powered X-ray pulsar regime and a rotationally-powered radio pulsar regime in response to variations of the mass in-flow rate have been recently identified. Here we report the detection of optical pulsations from a transitional pulsar, the first ever from a millisecond spinning neutron star. The pulsations were observed when the pulsar was surrounded by an accretion disk and originated inside the magnetosphere or within a few hundreds of kilometres from it. Energy arguments rule out reprocessing of accretion-powered X-ray emission and argue against a process related to accretion onto the pulsar polar caps; synchrotron emission of electrons in a rotation-powered pulsar magnetosphere seems more likely., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures. In the framework of the GAPS project, we are conducting an observational programme aimed at the determination of the orbital obliquity of known transiting exoplanets. The targets are selected to probe the obliquity against a wide range of stellar and planetary physical parameters. We exploit high-precision radial velocity (RV) measurements, delivered by the HARPS-N spectrograph at the 3.6m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, to measure the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect in RV time-series bracketing planet transits, and to refine the orbital parameters determinations with out-of-transit RV data. We also analyse new transit light curves obtained with several 1-2m class telescopes to better constrain the physical fundamental parameters of the planets and parent stars. We report here on new transit spectroscopic observations for three very massive close-in giant planets: WASP43b, HATP20b and Qatar2b orbiting dwarf K-type stars with effective temperature well below 5000K. We find lambda = 3.5pm6.8 deg for WASP43b and lambda = -8.0pm6.9 deg for HATP20b, while for Qatar2, our faintest target, the RM effect is only marginally detected, though our best-fit value lambda = 15pm20 deg is in agreement with a previous determination. In combination with stellar rotational periods derived photometrically, we estimate the true spin-orbit angle, finding that WASP43b is aligned while the orbit of HATP20b presents a small but significant obliquity (Psi=36 _{-12}^{+10} deg). By analyzing the CaII H&K chromospheric emission lines for HATP20 and WASP43, we find evidence for an enhanced level of stellar activity which is possibly induced by star-planet interactions.

In order to understand the observed physical and orbital diversity of extrasolar planetary systems, a full investigation of these objects and of their host stars is necessary. Within this field, one of the main purposes of the GAPS observing project with HARPS-N@TNG is to provide a more detailed characterisation of already known systems. In this framework we monitored the star, hosting two giant planets, HD108874, with HARPS-N for three years in order to refine the orbits, to improve the dynamical study and to search for additional low-mass planets in close orbits. We subtracted the radial velocity (RV) signal due to the known outer planets, finding a clear modulation of 40.2 d period. We analysed the correlation between RV residuals and the activity indicators and modelled the magnetic activity with a dedicated code. Our analysis suggests that the 40.2 d periodicity is a signature of the rotation period of the star. A refined orbital solution is provided, revealing that the system is close to a mean motion resonance of about 9:2, in a stable configuration over 1 Gyr. Stable orbits for low-mass planets are limited to regions very close to the star or far from it. Our data exclude super-Earths with Msin i \gtrsim 5 M_Earth within 0.4 AU and objects with Msin i \gtrsim 2 M_Earth with orbital periods of a few days. Open cluster (OC) stars share the same age and metallicity, and, in general, their age and mass can be estimated with higher precision than for field stars. For this reason, OCs are considered an important laboratory to study the relation between the physical properties of the planets and those of their host stars, and the evolution of planetary systems. We started an observational campaign within the GAPS collaboration to search for and characterize planets in OCs We monitored the Praesepe member Pr0211 to improve the eccentricity of the Hot-Jupiter (HJ) already known to orbit this star and search for additional planets. An eccentric orbit for the HJ would support a planet-planet scattering process after its formation. From 2012 to 2015, we collected 70 radial velocity (RV) measurements with HARPS-N and 36 with TRES of Pr0211. Simultaneous photometric observations were carried out with the robotic STELLA telescope in order to characterize the stellar activity. We discovered a long-term trend in the RV residuals that we show to be due to the presence of a second, massive, outer planet. Orbital parameters for the two planets are derived by simultaneously fitting RVs and photometric light curves, with the activity signal modelled as a series of sinusoids at the rotational period of the star and its harmonics. We confirm that Pr0211b has a nearly circular orbit ($e = 0.02 \pm 0.01$), with an improvement of a factor two with respect to the previous determination of its eccentricity, and estimate that Pr0211c has a mass $M_p\sin i = 7.9 \pm 0.2 M_J$, a period $P>$3500 days and a very eccentric orbit ($e>$0.60). Such peculiar systems may be typical of open clusters if the planet-planet scattering phase leading to the formation of HJs is caused by stellar encounters rather than unstable primordial orbits. Pr0211 is the first multi-planet system discovered around an OC star. Aims. For more than 1.5 years we monitored spectroscopically the star KELT-6 (BD+312447), known to host the transiting hot Saturn KELT-6b, because a previously observed long-term trend in radial velocity time series suggested the existence of an outer companion. Methods. We collected a total of 93 new spectra with the HARPS-N and TRES spectrographs. A spectroscopic transit of KELT-6b was observed with HARPS-N, and simultaneous photometry was obtained with the IAC-80 telescope. Results. We proved the existence of an outer planet with a mininum mass M$_{\rm p}$sini=3.71$\pm$0.21 M$_{\rm Jup}$ and a moderately eccentric orbit ($e=0.21_{-0.036}^{+0.039}$) of period P$\sim$3.5 years. We improved the orbital solution of KELT-6b and obtained the first measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, showing that the planet has a likely circular, prograde, and slightly misaligned orbit, with a projected spin-orbit angle $\lambda$=$-$36$\pm$11 degrees. We improved the KELT-6b transit ephemeris from photometry, and we provided new measurements of the stellar parameters. The Gaia SpectroPhotometric Standard Stars (SPSS) survey started in 2006, it was awarded almost 450 observing nights, and accumulated almost 100,000 raw data frames, with both photometric and spectroscopic observations. Such large observational effort requires careful, homogeneous, and automated data reduction and quality control procedures. In this paper, we quantitatively evaluate instrumental effects that might have a significant (i.e.,$\geq$1%) impact on the Gaia SPSS flux calibration. The measurements involve six different instruments, monitored over the eight years of observations dedicated to the Gaia flux standards campaigns: DOLORES@TNG in La Palma, EFOSC2@NTT and ROSS@REM in La Silla, CAFOS@2.2m in Calar Alto, BFOSC@Cassini in Loiano, and LaRuca@1.5m in San Pedro Martir. We examine and quantitatively evaluate the following effects: CCD linearity and shutter times, calibration frames stability, lamp flexures, second order contamination, light polarization, and fringing. Blazars are astrophysical sources whose emission is dominated by non-thermal processes, typically interpreted as synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. Although the general picture is rather robust and consistent with observations, many aspects are still unexplored. Polarimetric monitoring can offer a wealth of information about the physical processes in blazars. Models with largely different physical ingredients can often provide almost indistinguishable predictions for the total flux, but usually are characterized by markedly different polarization properties. We explore, with a pilot study, the possibility to derive structural information about the emitting regions of blazars by means of a joint analysis of rapid variability of the total and polarized flux at optical wavelengths. Short timescale (from tens of seconds to a couple of minutes) optical linear polarimetry and photometry for two blazars, BL Lacertae and PKS 1424+240, was carried out with the PAOLO polarimeter at the 3.6m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. Several hours of almost continuous observations were obtained for both sources. Our intense monitoring allowed us to draw strongly different scenarios for BL Lacertae and PKS 1424+240, with the former characterized by intense variability on time-scales from hours to a few minutes and the latter practically constant in total flux. Essentially the same behavior is observed for the polarized flux and the position angle. The variability time-scales turned out to be as short as a few minutes, although involving only a few percent variation of the flux. The polarization variability time-scale is generally consistent with the total flux variability. Total and polarized flux appear to be essentially uncorrelated. We describe a new polarimetric facility available at the Istituto Nazionale di AstroFisica / Telescopio Nazionale Galileo at La Palma, Canary islands. This facility, PAOLO (Polarimetric Add-On for the LRS Optics), is located at a Nasmyth focus of an alt-az telescope and requires a specific modeling in order to remove the time- and pointing position-dependent instrumental polarization. A long-term multi-purpose observational programme has started with HARPS-N@TNG aimed to characterise the global architectural properties of exoplanetary systems. In this first paper we fully characterise the transiting system Qatar-1. We exploit HARPS-N high-precision radial velocity measurements obtained during a transit to measure the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect in the Qatar-1 system, and out-of-transit measurements to redetermine the spectroscopic orbit. New photometric transit light-curves are analysed and a spectroscopic characterisation of the host star atmospheric parameters is performed based on various methods (line equivalent width ratios, spectral synthesis, spectral energy distribution). We achieved a significant improvement in the accuracy of the orbital parameters and derived the spin-orbit alignment of the system; this information, combined with the spectroscopic determination of the host star properties, allows us to derive the fundamental physical parameters for star and planet (masses and radii). The orbital solution for the Qatar-1 system is consistent with a circular orbit and the system presents a sky-projected obliquity of lambda = -8.4+-7.1 deg. The planet, with a mass of 1.33+-0.05 M_J, is found to be significantly more massive than previously reported. The host star is confirmed to be metal-rich ([Fe/H]= 0.20+-0.10) and slowly rotating (vsinI = 1.7+-0.3 km/s), though moderately active, as indicated by strong chromospheric emission in the Ca II H&K line cores (logR'_HK about -4.60). The system is well aligned and fits well within the general lambda vs Teff trend. We definitely rule out any significant orbital eccentricity. The evolutionary status of the system is inferred based on gyrochronology, and the present orbital configuration and timescale for orbital decay are discussed in terms of star-planet tidal interactions., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

We present a B, V color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the Milky Way dwarf satellite Ursa Major II (UMa II), spanning the magnitude range from V ~ 15 to V ~ 23.5 mag and extending over a 18 {\times} 18 arcmin2 area centered on the galaxy. Our photometry goes down to about 2 magnitudes below the galaxy's main sequence turn-off, that we detected at V ~ 21.5 mag. We have discovered a bona-fide RR Lyrae variable star in UMa II, which we use to estimate a conservative dereddened distance modulus for the galaxy of (m-M)0 = 17.70{\pm}0.04{\pm}0.12 mag, where the first error accounts for the uncertainties of the calibrated photometry, and the second reflects our lack of information on the metallicity of the star. The corresponding distance to UMa II is 34.7 {\pm} 0.6 ({\pm} 2.0) kpc. Our photometry shows evidence of a spread in the galaxy subgiant branch, compatible with a spread in metal abundance in the range between Z=0.0001 and Z=0.001. Based on our estimate of the distance, a comparison of the fiducial lines of the Galactic globular clusters (GCs) M68 and M5 ([Fe/H]=-2.27 {\pm} 0.04 dex and -1.33 {\pm} 0.02 dex, respectively), with the position on the CMD of spectroscopically confirmed galaxy members, may suggest the existence of stellar populations of different metal abundance/age in the central region of UMa II., Comment: To appear in ApJ

We present B, V and I CCD light curves for 101 variable stars belonging to the globular cluster NGC2419, 60 of which are new discoveries, based on datasets obtained at the TNG, SUBARU and HST telescopes. The sample includes 75 RR Lyrae stars (of which 38 RRab, 36 RRc and one RRd), one Population II Cepheid, 12 SX Phoenicis variables, 2 DeltaScuti stars, 3 binary systems, 5 long-period variables, and 3 variables of uncertain classification. The pulsation properties of the RR Lyrae variables are close to those of Oosterhoff type II clusters, consistent with the low metal abundance and the cluster horizontal branch morphology,disfavoring (but not totally ruling out) an extragalactic hypotesis for the origin of NGC2419. The observed properties of RR Lyrae and SX Phoenicis stars are used to estimate the cluster reddening and distance, using a number of different methods. Our final value is mo(NGC2419)=19.71+/-0.08mag (D= 87.5+/-3.3kpc), with E(B-V)=0.08+/-0.01mag, [Fe/H]=-2.1dex in the Zinn & West metallicity scale, and a value of Mv that sets mo(LMC)=18.52mag. We present the first V, B-V color-magnitude diagram of the Leo IV dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a faint Milky Way satellite recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have obtained B,V time-series photometry reaching about half a magnitude below the Leo IV turnoff, which we detect at V= 24.7 mag, and have performed the first study of the variable star population. We have identified three RR Lyrae stars (all fundamental-mode pulsators, RRab) and one SX Phoenicis variable in the galaxy. In the period-amplitude diagram the Leo IV RR Lyrae stars are located close to the loci of Oosterhoff type I systems and the evolved fundamental-mode RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic globular cluster M3. However, their mean pulsation period, $$=0.655 days, would suggest an Oosterhoff type II classification for this galaxy. The RR Lyrae stars trace very well the galaxy's horizontal branch, setting its average magnitude at $= 21.48 \pm 0.03$ mag (standard deviation of the mean). This leads to a distance modulus of $\mu_{0}=20.94 \pm 0.07$ mag, corresponding to a distance of $154 \pm 5$ kpc, by adopting for the Leo IV dSph a reddening $E(B-V) = 0.04 \pm 0.01$ mag and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -2.31 $\pm$ 0.10., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present B, V, I time-series photometry of the Coma Berenices dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a faint Milky Way satellite, recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have obtained V, B-V and V, V-I color-magnitude diagrams that reach V~23.0-23.2 mag showing the galaxy turnoff at V~21.7 mag, and have performed the first study of the variable star population of this new Milky Way companion. Two RR Lyrae stars (a fundamental-mode -RRab- and a first overtone -RRc- pulsator) and a short period variable with period P=0.12468 days were identified in the galaxy. The RRab star has a rather long period of P_ab=0.66971 days and is about 0.2 mag brighter than the RRc variable and other non-variable stars on the galaxy horizontal branch. In the period-amplitude diagram the RRab variable falls closer to the loci of Oosterhoff type-II systems and evolved fundamental-mode RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic globular cluster M3. The average apparent magnitude of the galaxy horizontal branch, =18.64+-0.04 mag, leads to a distance modulus for the Coma dSph mu_0=18.13+-0.08 mag, corresponding to a distance d=42^{+2}_{-1} kpc, by adopting a reddening E(B-V) = 0.045 +- 0.015 mag and a metallicity [Fe/H]=-2.53 +- 0.05 dex., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJL

We report on the detection of variable stars in the Canes Venatici II (CVn II) dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a new satellite of the Milky Way recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We also present a V, B-V color-magnitude diagram that reaches V = 25.5 mag, showing the galaxy's main sequence turn off at V = 24.5 mag and revealing several candidate blue straggler stars. Two RR Lyrae stars have been identified within the half-light radius of CVn II,a fundamental-mode variable (RRab) with period P_ab = 0.743 days, and a first-overtone (RRc) RR Lyrae star with P_c = 0.358 days. The rather long periods of these variables along with their position on the period-amplitude diagram support an Oosterhoff type II classification for CVn II. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars, = 21.48 +/- 0.02 mag, is used to obtain a precision distance modulus of mu_0 = 21.02 +/- 0.06 mag and a corresponding distance of 160(+4,-5} kpc, for an adopted reddening E(B-V) = 0.015 mag., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters

We have carried out a new photometric study of the remote Galactic globular cluster NGC 2419, using proprietary and archive B,V,I time-series CCD photometry of the cluster, that allowed us to discover a large number of new variable stars and to obtain a new colour magnitude diagram that reaches V ~26 mag over a field of 50X43 square arcmin centered on NGC 2419. The new variables include 39 RR Lyrae and 11 SX Phoenicis stars. We present a new, deep (V ~ 26) study of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2419 based on B,V,I time-series CCD photometry over about 10 years and extending beyond the cluster published tidal radius. We have identified 101 variable stars of which 60 are new discoveries, doubling the known RR Lyrae stars and including 12 SX Phoenicis stars. The average period of the RR Lyrae stars (=0.662 d, and =0.366 d, for fundamental-mode -RRab- and first-overtone pulsators, respectively), and the position in the period-amplitude diagram both confirm that NGC 2419 is an Oosterhoff II cluster. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars is =20.31 +/- 0.01 (sigma=0.06, 67 stars) and leads to the distance modulus (m-M)o=19.60 +/- 0.05. The Color-Magnitude Diagram, reaching about 2.6 mag below the cluster turn-off, does not show clear evidence of multiple stellar populations. Cluster stars are found until r~ 10.5', and possibly as far as r~15', suggesting that the literature tidal radius might be underestimated. No extra-tidal structures are clearly detected in the data. NGC 2419 has many blue stragglers and a well populated horizontal branch extending from the RR Lyrae stars down to an extremely blue tail ending with the "blue-hook", for the first time recognized in this cluster. The red giant branch is narrow ruling out significant metallicity spreads. Our results seem to disfavor the interpretation of NGC 2419 as either having an extragalactic origin or being the relict of a dwarf galaxy tidally disrupted by the Milky Way., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

We present $V,I$ light curves for 12 variable stars identified in the newly discovered satellite of the Milky Way in the Bootes constellation (Belokurov et al. 2006).Our sample includes 11 RR Lyrae stars (5 first overtone, 5 fundamental mode and 1 double mode pulsator),and one long period variable close to the galaxy red giant branch tip. The RR Lyrae stars trace very well the average $V$ luminosity of the galaxy horizontal branch, leading to a true distance modulus for the galaxy of $\mu_0$=19.11 $\pm$ 0.08 mag for an assumed metal abundance of [Fe/H]=-2.5 (Monoz et al. 2006), and for $E(B-V)$=0.02 mag. Average periods are =0.69 d and =0.37 d for {\it ab-} and {\it c-} type RR Lyrae stars, respectively, making of Bootes the second pure Oosterhoff type II (OoII) dSph after Ursa Minor. The location of the double mode RR Lyrae (RRd) in the Petersen diagram is consistent with RRd stars in OoII clusters, and corresponds to an intrinsic luminosity of $log L/logL\odot$=1.72 (for Z=10$^{-4}$ and M=0.80 M$\odot$) according to Bono et al. We have obtained medium-low resolution spectroscopy and BVI CCD imaging of Berkeley 32, an old open cluster which lies in the anticentre direction. From the radial velocities of 48 stars in the cluster direction we found that 31 of them, in crucial evolutionary phases, are probable cluster members, with an average radial velocity of +106.7 (sigma = 8.5) km/s. From isochrone fitting to the colour magnitude diagrams of Berkeley 32 we have obtained an age of 6.3 Gyr, (m-M)0 = 12.48 and E(B-V) = 0.10. The best fit is obtained with Z=0.008. A consistent distance, (m-M)0 ~= 12.6 +/- 0.1, has been derived from the mean magnitude of red clump stars with confirmed membership; we may assume (m-M)0 ~= 12.55 +/- 0.1. The colour magnitude diagram of the nearby field observed to check for field stars contamination looks intriguingly similar to that of the Canis Major overdensity., Comment: MNRAS, in press. We have used DOLORES at the TNG to obtain B,V time series photometry of NGC 2419, one of the most distant and bright clusters in the Galactic halo. These data will be used to study its variable star population in order to check whether the cluster could be the relic of an extragalactic system accreted by the Milky Way. Using the Image Subtraction technique (Alard 2000) we have identified about 300 candidate variables, many of which are in the cluster central regions. Several of the variables appear to be RR Lyrae stars, but we detected variability also around the tip of the red giant branch, and in other regions of the colour-magnitude diagram. To improve the light curve sampling and to resolve variables in the cluster inner regions, the TNG data were combined with HST archive data. We present deep CCD BVI photometry of the distant, old open cluster Berkeley 22, covering from the red giants branch (RGB) to about 6 magnitudes below the main sequence (MS) turn-off. Using the synthetic Colour - Magnitude Diagram method with three different types of stellar evolutionary tracks, we estimate values and theoretical uncertainty of distance modulus mod0, reddening E(B-V), age tau and approximate metallicity. The best fit to the data is obtained for 13.8 <= mod0 <= 14.1, 0.64 <= E(B-V) <= 0.65, 2 <= tau <= 2.5 Gyr (depending on the amount of overshooting from convective regions adopted in the stellar models) and solar metallicity., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

The catalogue of the Johnson-Cousins B,V and I light curves obtained for 162 variable stars (135 RR Lyrae, 4 candidate Anomalous Cepheids, 11 Classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and 1 delta Scuti star) in two areas close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud is presented along with coordinates, finding charts, periods, epochs, amplitudes, and mean quantities (intensity- and magnitude-averaged luminosities) of the variables with full coverage of the light variations. A star by star comparison is made with MACHO and OGLE II photometries based on both variable and constant stars in common, and the transformation relationships to our photometry are provided. The pulsation properties of the RR Lyrae stars in the sample are discussed in detail. Parameters of the Fourier decomposition of the light curves are derived for the fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars with complete and regular curves (29 stars). They are used to estimate metallicities, absolute magnitudes, intrinsic (B-V)o colours, and temperatures of the variable stars, according to Jurcsik and Kovacs (1996), and Kovacs and Walker (2001) method. Quantities derived from the Fourier parameters are compared with the corresponding observed quantities. In particular, the "photometric" metallicities are compared with the spectroscopic metal abundances derived by Gratton et al. (2004) from low resolution spectra obtained with FORS at the Very Large Telescope., Comment: 52 pages. We present CCD BVI photometry of the old open cluster Berkeley 29, located in the anticentre direction. Using the synthetic Colour - Magnitude Diagrams technique we estimate at the same time its age, reddening, distance, and approximate metallicity using three types of stellar evolutionary tracks. The best solutions give: age=3.4 or 3.7 Gyr, (m-M)_0 = 15.6 or 15.8 with E(B-V) = 0.13 or 0.10, and metallicity lower than solar (Z=0.006 or 0.004), depending on the adopted stellar models. Using these derived values, Be 29 turns out to be the most distant open cluster known, with Galactocentric distance R_GC= 21.4 to 22.6 kpc. Hence, Be 29 qualitatively follows both the age-metallicity relation and the metal abundance gradient typical of Galactic disc objects. We present new near infrared spectroscopic measurements of the H_beta region for a sample of 29 luminous high redshift quasars. We have measured the width of H_beta in those sources, and added archival H_beta width measurements, to create a sample of 92 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for which H_beta width and rest-frame UV measurements of N V \lambda 1240 and C IV \lambda 1549 emission-lines are available. Our sample spans six orders of magnitude in luminosity and includes 31 radio-loud AGNs. It also includes 10 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies and one broad absorption-line quasar. We find that metallicity, indicated by the N V/C IV line ratio, is primarily correlated with accretion rate, which is a function of luminosity and H_beta line-width. This may imply an intimate relation between starburst, responsible for the metal enrichment of the nuclear gas, and AGN fueling, represented by the accretion rate. The correlation of metallicity with luminosity, or black hole (BH) mass, is weaker in contrast with recent results which were based on measurements of the width of C IV. We argue that using C IV as a proxy to H_beta in estimating M_BH might be problematic and lead to spurious BH mass and accretion rate estimates in individual sources. We present new near infrared spectroscopic measurements for 29 luminous high-z quasars and use the data to discuss the size and other properties of the NLRs in those sources. The high resolution spectra have been used to carefully model the Fe II blends and to provide reliable [O III], Fe II and Hb measurements. We find that about 2/3 of all high luminosity sources show strong [O III] lines while the remaining objects show no or very weak such line. While weak [O III] emitters are also found among lower luminosity AGN, we argue that the implications for very high luminosity objects are different. In particular, we suggest that the averaging of these two populations in other works gave rise to claims of a Baldwin relationship in [O III] which is not confirmed by our data. We also argue that earlier proposed relations of the type R_NLR \propto L_[O III]^{1/2}, where R_NLR is the NLR radius, are theoretically sound yet they must break down for R_NLR exceeding a few kpc. This suggests that the NLR properties in luminous sources are different from those observed in nearby AGN. In particular, we suggest that some sources lost their very large, dynamically unbound NLR while others are in a phase of violent star-forming events that produce a large quantity of high density gas in the central kpc. This gas is ionized and excited by the central radiation source and its spectroscopic properties may be different from those observed in nearby, lower luminosity NLRs. We also discuss the dependence of EW(Hb) and Fe II/Hb on L, M_BH, and accretion rate for a large sample of AGNs. The strongest dependence of the two quantities is on the accretion rate and the Fe II/Hb correlation is probably due to the EW(Hb) dependence on accretion rate. Metallicities ([Fe/H]) from low resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) are presented for 98 RR Lyrae and 3 short period Cepheids in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our metal abundances have typical errors of +/-0.17 dex. The average metallicity of the RR Lyrae stars is [Fe/H]=-1.48 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.06 on the scale of Harris (1996). The star-to-star scatter (0.29 dex) is larger than the observational errors, indicating a real spread in metal abundances. The derived metallicities cover the range -2.12 < [Fe/H] <-0.27, but there are only a few stars having [Fe/H] > -1. For the ab-type variables we compared our spectroscopic abundances with those obtained from the Fourier decomposition of the light curves. We find good agreement between the two techniques, once the systematic offset of 0.2 dex between the metallicity scales used in the two methods is taken into account. The spectroscopic metallicities were combined with the dereddened apparent magnitudes of the variables to derive the slope of the luminosity-metallicity relation for the LMC RR Lyrae stars: the resulting value is 0.214 +/- 0.047 mag/dex. Finally, the 3 short period Cepheids have [Fe/H] values in the range -2.0 < [Fe/H] <-1.5 . They are more metal-poor than typical LMC RR Lyrae stars, thus they are more likely to be Anomalous Cepheids rather than the short period Classical Cepheids that are being found in a number of dwarf Irregular galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 22 figures, figs 1 to 8 only as JPEG, uses aa.cls, in press on A&A

Results are presented of a study of the variable star populations in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I and in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822, based on time series photometry obtained with the Wide Field Imager of the 2.2 m ESO/MPI telescope (Leo I) and the Very Large Telescope (NGC 6822). We found about 250 (lower limit) variables in Leo I most of which are RR Lyrae stars. We briefly review our photometric and spectroscopic study of RR Lyrae variable stars in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), that allowed us to reconcile the so-called "short" and "long" distance moduli of the LMC on the value mod_LMC=18.51 +/- 0.085 mag. Then we present preliminary results from the photometric study of a 33' x 34' area in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy containing the stellar clusters Fornax 3 (NGC 1049) and 6. New B, V, I photometry was obtained for a sample of 152 variables (125 RR Lyrae's, 4 anomalous Cepheids, 11 classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and a delta Scuti star) in two regions near the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We derived complete and well sampled B and V light curves, very accurate periods, epochs of maximum light, amplitudes, intensity- and magnitude-averaged apparent luminosities for about 95% of the RR Lyrae stars. All these informations are contained in the photometric catalogue. Metallicities from the Fourier decomposition of the V light curves were derived for 29 of the ab type RR Lyrae's and are compared with the DeltaS metal abundances from low resolution spectra obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT)., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Time series of B,V,I CCD photometry and radial velocity measurements from high resolution spectroscopy (R=30,000) covering the full pulsation cycle are presented for the field RR Lyrae star CM Leonis. The photometric data span a 6 year interval from 1994 to 1999, and allow us to firmly establish the pulsation mode and periodicity of the variable. The derived period P=0.361699 days (+/- 0.000001) is very close to the value published in the Fourth Edition of the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (P=0.361732 days). However, contrary to what was previously found, the amplitude and shape of the light curve qualify CM Leo as a very regular first overtone pulsator with a prominent hump on the rising branch of its multicolour light curves. According to an abundace analysis performed on three spectra taken near minimum light (0.42 < phase < 0.61), CM Leo is a metal-poor star with metal abundance [Fe/H]=-1.93 +/- 0.20. The photometric and radial velocity curves of CM Leo have been compared with the predictions of suitable pulsational models to infer tight constraints on the stellar mass, effective temperature, and distance modulus of the star. We derive a true distance modulus of CM Leo of (m-M)0=13.11 +/- 0.02 mag and a corresponding absolute magnitude of Mv=0.47 +/- 0.04. This absolute magnitude, once corrected for evolutionary and metallicity effects, leads to a true distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud of (m-M)0=18.43 +/- 0.06 mag, in better agreement with the long astronomical distance scale., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present new B, V, I photometry in the standard Johnson-Cousins photometric system of two regions near the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), one of which is very close to LMC field used for the "Coimbra test on the synthetic CMD techniques". The two areas contain 128 RR Lyrae variables and more than 8000 clump stars. Once combined with Clementini et al. 2001 (astro-ph/0007471) photometry the new data-set allows us to get (i) accurate CMD's down to V~23 mag, (ii) full coverage of the B and V light variation for more than 80% of the RR Lyrae's, (iii) a very precise estimate of the LMC RR Lyrae's average apparent luminosity, (iv) an accurate estimate of the I luminosity of the LMC clump stars, and (v) an independent evaluation of the reddening in these regions of the LMC using the pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae's in our sample. A detailed comparison is made between our, OGLE II and MACHO photometries. We report the discovery of a significant population of RR Lyrae variables in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I. Based on 40 V and 22 B images of the galaxy taken using the ESO Wide Field Imager we have identified so far 74 candidate RR Lyrae's in two CCD's hosting the main body of the galaxy. Full coverage of the light variations and pulsation periods have been obtained for 54 of them, 47 of which are Bailey {\it ab}-type RR Lyrae's (RRab's) and 7 are {\it c}-type (RRc's). The period distribution of the presently confirmed sample of RRab's peaks at P=0\fd60, with a minimum period of 0\fd54. The pulsational properties indicate for Leo I an intermediate Oosterhoff type, similar to other dwarf galaxies in the Local Group and the LMC. However, the rather long minimum period of the {\it ab}-type variables, and the significant number of RRab's with long period and large amplitude, suggest that the bulk of the old population in Leo I is more like the Oosterhoff type II globular clusters. The most straightforward interpretation is that a range in metallicity is present among the RR Lyrae's of Leo I, with a significant population of very metal-poor stars. Alternatively, these OoII variables could be more evolved. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae's across the full cycle is $= 22.60 \pm 0.12$ mag, yielding a distance modulus $(m-M)_{V,0}= 22.04\pm 0.14$ mag for Leo I on the ``long'' distance scale., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL; 4 pages including 3 figures

We present CCD BVI photometry of the intermediate age open cluster Pismis 2, covering from the brighter red giants to about 5 magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off. The cluster is heavily reddened and is possibly affected by a differential reddening of Delta E(B-V) ~= 0.04-0.06. Using the synthetic Colour - Magnitude Diagram method, we estimate in a self-consistent way distance modulus, (n-M)0 ~= 12.5-12.7, and age ~= 1.1-1.2 Gyr. The cluster probably contains a significant fraction of binary systems. The metallicity is most likely solar and the reddening E(B-V) ranges between 1.26 and 1.32 depending on the cluster region., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Metallicities for six double mode RR Lyrae's (RRd's) in the Large Magellanic Cloud have been estimated using the DeltaS method. The derived [Fe/H] values are in the range [Fe/H] = -1.09 to -1.78 (or -0.95 to -1.58, adopting a different calibration of [Fe/H] vs DeltaS). Two stars in our sample are at the very metal rich limit of all RRd's for which metal abundance has been estimated, either by direct measure (for field objects) or on the basis of the hosting system (for objects in globular clusters or external galaxies). These metal abundances, coupled with mass determinations from pulsational models and the Petersen diagram, are used to compare the mass-metallicity distribution of field and cluster RR Lyrae variables. We find that field and cluster RRd's seem to follow the same mass-metallicity distribution, within the observational errors, strengthening the case for uniformity of properties between field and cluster variables At odds to what is usually assumed, we find no significative difference in mass for RR Lyrae's in globular clusters of different metallicity and Oosterhoff types, or there may even be a difference contrary to the commonly accepted one, depending on the metallicity scale adopted to derive masses. This ``unusual'' result for the mass-metallicity relation is probably due, at least in part, to the inclusion of updated opacity tables in the computation of metal-dependent pulsation models., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, uses aastex, accepted for publication in AJ
