The Ingot WFS belongs to a class of pupil-plane WFSs designed to address the challenges posed by Sodium Laser Guide Stars, and consists of a combination of refractive and reflective surfaces, arranged into a complex prismatic shape that extends in three dimensions. Specifically, it leverages the Scheimpflug principle to sense the full 3D volume of such elongated, time-varying sources, thus optimizing the performance of the next-generation AO-assisted giant telescopes. In this work we discuss the geometrical and optical motivations endorsing the development of this class of WFSs, showing the different configurations we propose to the AO community. The Ingot WFS was designed to overcome some of the challenges present in classical wavefront sensors when they deal with sodium LGSs. This innovative sensor works by sensing the full 3D volume of the elongated LGS and is suitable for use in very large telescopes. A test bench has been assembled at the INAF - Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova laboratories to test and characterize the functioning of the Ingot WFS. In this work, we summarize the main results of the tests performed on a new search algorithm. Then, we move towards a more accurate simulation of the sodium LGS by replicating real time-varying sodium layer profiles. Quadratic Gravity supplements the Einstein-Hilbert action by terms quadratic in the spacetime curvature. This leads to a rich phase space of static, compact gravitating objects including the Schwarzschild black hole, wormholes, and naked singularities. For the first time, we study the collapse of a spherically symmetric star with uniform dust density in this setting. The symmetries of the problem make the interior solution insensitive to the Weyl-squared term, so that the interior dynamics is fully determined by $R$ and $R^2$. As our main result, we find that the collapse leads to the formation of a horizon, implying that the endpoint of a uniform dust collapse in Quadratic Gravity is not a horizonless spacetime. We also show that the curvature-squared contribution is responsible for making the collapse into a singularity faster than the standard Oppenheimer-Snyder scenario. Furthermore, the junction conditions connecting spacetime inside and outside the matter distribution are found to be significantly more constraining than their counterparts in General Relativity and we discuss key properties of any exterior solution matching to the spacetime inside the collapsing star., Comment: 31 pages. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) will be the new medium-resolution (R 4500 for 1 slit), high-efficiency, wide-band spectrograph for the ESO NTT at La Silla Observatory, Chile. It will be dedicated to the follow-up of any kind of transient events, ensuring fast time, high efficiency, and availability. It consists of a central structure (common path) that supports two spectrographs optimized for the UV-Visible and a Near-Infrared range. Attached to the common path is the Acquisition and Guiding Camera system (AC), equipped with a filter wheel that can provide science-grade imaging and moderate high-speed photometry. The AC Unit was integrated and aligned during the summer months of 2022 and has since been mounted in the NTTs telescope simulator. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new single object spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at the La Silla Observatory, able to cover simultaneously both the UV-VIS and NIR bands (350-2000 nm). The instrument is currently in the integration and test phase, approaching the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe (PAE) before shipment to Chile for commissioning. After the assembly and preliminary test of the control electronics at INAF - Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (Napoli), the two main control cabinets of SOXS are now hosted in Padova, connected to the real hardware. This contribution describes the final electronic cabinets layout, the control strategy and the different integration phases, waiting for the Preliminary Acceptance in Europe and the installation of the instrument in Chile.

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) will be the specialized facility to observe any transient event with a flexible scheduler at the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla, Chile. SOXS is a single object spectrograph offering simultaneous spectral coverage in UV-VIS (350-850 nm) and NIR (800-2000 nm) wavelength regimes with an average of R~4500 for a 1arcsec slit. SOXS also has imaging capabilities in the visible wavelength regime. Currently, SOXS is being integrated at the INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Padova. Subsystem- and system-level tests and verification are ongoing to ensure and confirm that every requirement and performance are met. In this paper, we report on the integration and verification of SOXS as the team and the instrument prepare for the Preliminary Acceptance Europe (PAE).

The Son Of X-Shooter (SOXS) is a single object spectrograph, built by an international consortium for the 3.58-m ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory [1]. It offers a simultaneous spectral coverage over 350-2000 nm, with two separate spectrographs. In this paper we present the status of the Near InfraRed (NIR) cryogenic echelle cross-dispersed spectrograph [1], in the range 0.80-2.00 {\mu}m with 15 orders, equipped with an 2k x 2k Hawaii H2RG IR array from Teledyne, working at 40K, that is currently assembled and tested on the SOXS instrument, in the premises of INAF in Padova. We present the advancements in the development of the scheduler for the Son Of X-shooter instrument at the ESO-NTT 3.58-m telescope in La Silla, Chile. SOXS is designed as a single-object spectroscopic facility and features a high-efficiency spectrograph with two arms covering the spectral range of 350-2000 nm and a mean resolving power of approximately R=4500. It will conduct UV-visible and near-infrared follow-up observations of astrophysical transients, drawing from a broad pool of targets accessible through the streaming services of wide-field telescopes, both current and future, as well as high-energy satellites. The instrument will cater to various scientific objectives within the astrophysical community, each entailing specific requirements for observation planning. SOXS will operate at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in La Silla, without the presence of astronomers on the mountain. This poses a unique challenge for the scheduling process, demanding a fully automated algorithm that is autonomously interacting with the appropriate databases and the La Silla Weather API, and is capable of presenting the operator not only with an ordered list of optimal targets (in terms of observing constraints) but also with optimal backups in the event of changing weather conditions. This imposes the necessity for a scheduler with rapid-response capabilities without compromising the optimization process, ensuring the high quality of observations and best use of the time at the telescope. We thus developed a new highly available and scalable architecture, implementing API Restful applications like Docker Containers, API Gateway, and Python-based Flask frameworks. We provide an overview of the current state of the scheduler, which is now ready for the approaching on-site testing during Commissioning phase, along with insights into its web interface and preliminary performance tests.

The SOXS spectrograph, designed for the ESO NTT telescope, operates in both the optical (UV-VIS: 350-850 nm) and NIR (800-2000 nm) bands. It details the system's performance evaluation, including key metrics such as gain, readout noise, and linearity, and highlights the advancements made in the upgraded acquisition system. The testing process, conducted in the Padua laboratory, involved comprehensive simulations of the telescope environment to ensure the results closely resemble those expected at the ESO-NTT telescope. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new ESO instrument that is going to be installed on the 3.58-m New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory. SOXS is a single object spectrograph offering a wide simultaneous spectral coverage from U- to H-band. Although such an instrument may have potentially a large variety of applications, the consortium designed it with a clear science case: it is going to provide the spectroscopic counterparts to the ongoing and upcoming imaging surveys, becoming one of the main follow-up instruments in the Southern hemisphere for the classification and characterization of transients. The NTT+SOXS system is specialized to observe all transients and variable sources discovered by imaging surveys with a flexible schedule maintained by the consortium, based on a remote scheduler which will interface with the observatory software infrastructure. SOXS is realized timely to be highly synergic with transients discovery machines like the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. The instrument has been integrated and tested in Italy, collecting and assembling subsystems coming from all partners spread over six countries in three continents. The first preparatory activities in Chile have been completed at the telescope. The Instrument Control Software of SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter), the forthcoming spectrograph for the ESO New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory, has reached a mature state of development and is approaching the crucial Preliminary Acceptance in Europe phase. Now that all the subsystems have been integrated in the laboratories of the Padova Astronomical Observatory, the team operates for testing purposes with the whole instrument at both engineering and scientific level. These activities will make use of a set of software peculiarities that will be discussed in this contribution. In a spherically symmetric and static spacetime of a compact object, such as that of a Schwarzschild black hole, the light-ring is a 2-sphere where photons experience the only possible circular orbits. As a "Gedankenexperiment", we imagine an advanced civilisation able to populate the light-ring of a nonrotating black hole of mass $M$ with photons having a fine-tuned impact parameter that allows their orbits to be exactly circular with radius $r=3M$. As the number of photons in the light-ring increases in time, its mass will no longer be negligible and hence it will impact on the background spacetime, that is, it will "self-gravitate". We here consider two different routes to assign a nonzero mass to the light-ring that are either based on a discrete concentration of photons on a specific radial location or on a suitable distribution of photons in a given region. In both cases, and using the Einstein equations, we find that the inclusion of the energy from the accumulated photons leads to the generation of new light-rings. Such new light-rings can either appear at well-defined but discrete locations, or be fused in a well-defined region. In either case, we show that such light-ring configurations are dynamically unstable and a small perturbation, either via the inclusion of an additional photon onto the light-ring or via the absorption of a photon by the black hole, leads to a catastrophic destruction of the light-ring structures., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

The CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) project is a future CubeSat mission orbiting the Earth aimed to measure the linear polarization of solar flares in the hard X-ray band, by means of a Compton scattering polarimeter. CUSP will allow us to study the magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in the flaring magnetic structures of our star. The project is in the framework of the Italian Space Agency Alcor Program, which aims to develop new CubeSat missions. CUSP is approved for a Phase B study that will last for 12 months, starting in mid-2024. The CUbesat Solar Polarimeter (CUSP) project aims to develop a constellation of two CubeSats orbiting the Earth to measure the linear polarization of solar flares in the hard X-ray band by means of a Compton scattering polarimeter on board of each satellite. CUSP will allow to study the magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration in the flaring magnetic structures. CUSP is a project approved for a Phase B study by the Italian Space Agency in the framework of the Alcor program aimed to develop CubeSat technologies and missions. In this paper we describe the a method for a multi-physical simulation analysis while analyzing some possible design optimization of the payload design solutions adopted. Full sky coverage Adaptive Optics on Extremely Large Telescopes requires the adoption of several Laser Guide Stars as references.With such large apertures, the apparent elongation of the beacons is absolutely significant.With few exceptions,WaveFront Sensors designed for Natural Guide Stars are adapted and used in suboptimal mode in this context. We analyse and describe the geometrical properties of a class of WaveFront Sensors that are specifically designed to deal with Laser Guide Stars propagated from a location in the immediate vicinity of the telescope aperture. We describe in three dimensions the loci where the light of the Laser Guide Stars would focus in the focal volume located behind the focal plane (where astronomical objects are reimaged). We also describe the properties of several types of optomechanical devices that, through refraction and reflections, act as perturbers for this new class of pupil plane sensors, which we call ingot WaveFront Sensor. We give the recipes both for the most reasonable complex version of these WaveFront Sensors, with 6 pupils, and for the simplest one, with only 3 pupils. Both of them are referred to the ELT case. Elements to have a qualitative idea of how the sensitivity of such a new class of sensors compared to conventional ones are outlined. We present a new class of WaveFront Sensors, by carrying out the extension to the case of elongated sources at finite distance of the pyramid WaveFront Sensor and pointing out which advantages of the pyramid are retained and how it can be adopted to optimize the sensing., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 11 pages, 9 figures

While the standard point of view is that the ultimate endpoint of black hole evolution is determined by Hawking evaporation, there is a growing evidence that classical and semi-classical instabilities affect both black holes with inner horizons as well as their ultra-compact counterparts. In this essay we start from this evidence pointing towards extremal black holes as stable endpoints of the gravitational collapse, and develop a general class of spherical and axisymmetric solutions with multiple extremal horizons. Excluding more exotic possibilities, entailing regular cores supporting wormhole throats, we argue that these configuration could be the asymptotic graveyard, the end-point, of dynamical black hole evolution -- albeit the timescale of such evolution are still unclear and possibly long and compatible with current astrophysical observations., Comment: Essay awarded the Fifth Prize in the Gravity Research Foundation 2024 Awards; 18 pages. Non-singular horizonless ultracompact objects provide a simple resolution to the black holes singularity problem. It has been shown that, if these objects are compact enough to exhibit the presence of the light-ring required to mimic the phenomenology of general relativity black holes, they must have at least one additional light-ring. The stability of the inner light ring has been proven under the assumption of Einstein equations and the validity of the null energy condition. Since this can have important repercussions on the instability of a horizonless ultracompact object and the existence of the latter requires some modified gravitational dynamics and/or exotic matter, it is desirable to obtain a model-independent proof of the stability of the additional light-ring. In this paper, we prove the stability of the inner light-ring without any assumption on the dynamics of the theory, while assuming that the outer light-ring has the same properties as the Kerr light-ring. Given the stringent observational constraints on the geometry at the outer light-ring scale, our result now rests solely on geometric considerations and applies to any theory of gravity with any matter content that cannot be ruled out by observations., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure

Recently it was shown that essentially all regular black hole models constructed so far can be obtained as solutions of vacuum gravity equations, upon considering an infinite series of quasi-topological higher curvature corrections. Here we show that such a construction can be upgraded to yield regular black holes with vanishing inner horizon surface gravity. In four dimensions, such a condition is necessary for the absence of classical instabilities associated with mass inflation on the inner horizon., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure

Mass inflation is a well established instability, conventionally associated to Cauchy horizons (which are also inner trapping horizons) of stationary geometries, leading to a divergent exponential buildup of energy. We show here that finite (but often large) exponential buildups of energy are generically present for dynamical geometries endowed with slowly-evolving inner trapping horizons, even in the absence of Cauchy horizons. This provides a more general definition of mass inflation based on quasi-local concepts. We also show that various known results in the literature are recovered in the limit in which the inner trapping horizon asymptotically approaches a Cauchy horizon. Our results imply that black hole geometries with non-extremal inner horizons, including the Kerr geometry in general relativity, and non-extremal regular black holes in theories beyond general relativity, can describe dynamical transients but not the long-lived endpoint of gravitational collapse., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

MORFEO (Multi-conjugate adaptive Optics Relay For ELT Observations, formerly MAORY), the MCAO system for the ELT, will provide diffraction-limited optical quality to the large field camera MICADO. MORFEO has officially passed the Preliminary Design Review and it is entering the final design phase. We present the current status of the project, with a focus on the adaptive optics system aspects and expected milestones during the next project phase.

Infrared observations of Sgr A$^*$ and M87$^*$ are incompatible with the assumption that these sources have physical surfaces in thermal equilibrium with their accreting environments. In this paper we discuss a general parametrization of the energy balance in a horizonless object, which permits to quantify how close a horizonless object is in its behavior to a black hole, and analyze the timescale in which its surface can thermalize. We show that the thermalization timescale is unbounded, growing large for objects that mimic closely the behavior of a black hole (and being infinite for the latter). In particular, the thermalization timescale is proportional to the time that energy spends inside the horizonless object due to propagation and interactions with the bulk. Hence, these observations can be used to quantitatively restrict the dynamical behavior of horizonless objects, without being able to discard the existence of a physical surface., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures

Understanding the dynamics of soft hair might shine some light on the information loss paradox. In this paper, we introduce a new coordinate system, dressed coordinates, in order to analyze the quantum states of Hawking radiation as a first step toward understanding the connection between soft hair and the information paradox. Dressed coordinates can be introduced by an operator-dependent coordinate transformation that makes the soft hair degrees of freedom apparently disappear from the metric. We show that some results of previous studies, such as the angle-dependent Hawking temperature and the soft graviton theorem, can be easily reproduced using these dressed coordinates.
